Abstract:I was shaped by World War II, years of near starvation as a war refugee, postwar chaos, life in several countries, and relative affluence in later life. The truth is that as I was growing up I wanted to be a writer. My aspirations came to an end when, in order to speed up my graduation from college, I took courses in microbiology. It was my second love at first sight-that of my wife preceded it. I view science as an opportunity to discover the designs in the mosaics of life. What initiates my search of discovery is an observation that makes no sense unless there exists a novel design. Once the design is revealed there is little interest in filling all the gaps. I was fortunate to understand that what lasts are not the scientific reports but rather the generations of scientists whose education I may have influenced.

Abstract:This editorial summarizes selected key contributions of Prof. Stephen Grossberg and describes the papers in this 80th birthday special issue in his honor. His productivity, creativity, and vision would each be enough to mark a scientist of the first caliber. In combination, they have resulted in contributions that have changed the entire discipline of neural networks. Grossberg has been tremendously influential in engineering, dynamical systems, and artificial intelligence as well. Indeed, he has been one of the most important mentors and role models in my career, and has done so with extraordinary generosity and encouragement. All authors in this special issue have taken great pleasure in hereby commemorating his extraordinary career and contributions.

This present list includes all Claude’s known published work, including poems and DVDs, as well as articles that he originally posted on his own website, which have been transferred to the Claude Steiner Archivos (www.emotional-literacy.org/category/claude-steiner/), now curated by Agustín Devós; for the purposes of this bibliography, I have only included those articles posted on this website which have not been published elsewhere. Finally, this list excludes oral presentations (speeches, workshops, etc.) where there was no written paper, as well as personal and professional correspondence, some of the latter of which may be found in the Eric Berne Archives at the University of California (www.ericbernearchives.org/). The bibliography is annotated in that I provide explanatory notes to entries; I have also cross-referenced the dates of subsequent versions as well as translations of original publications.

Abstract:Short information about the conference in 1960 in Jerusalem is presented together with an interesting photo where we can find several famous mathematicians participated in this conference. To recognize the people on the photo and collect their date of birth and death took me over five years. It was plan to have ready this note in 2010 on fifty years after conference. Unfortunately, this was not possible. Stil there are three persons which are not recognized. Maybe this publication will help to recognize them. In May 2012 I was trying to publish this article in Mathematical Intelligencer, but they would be willing to consider a longer, substantially revised, version. Also Notices AMS does not publish articles about conferences.

A tribute to Ulrich Heber (1930-2016) for his contribution to photosynthesis research: understanding the interplay between photosynthetic primary reactions, metabolism and the environment

Abstract:The dynamic and efficient coordination of primary photosynthetic reactions with leaf energization and metabolism under a wide range of environmental conditions is a fundamental property of plants involving processes at all functional levels. The present historical perspective covers 60 years of research aiming to understand the underlying mechanisms, linking major breakthroughs to current progress. It centers on the contributions of Ulrich Heber who had pioneered novel concepts, fundamental methods, and mechanistic understanding of photosynthesis. An important first step was the development of non-aqueous preparation of chloroplasts allowing the investigation of chloroplast metabolites ex vivo (meaning that the obtained results reflect the in vivo situation). Later on, intact chloroplasts, retaining their functional envelope membranes, were isolated in aqueous media to investigate compartmentation and exchange of metabolites between chloroplasts and external medium. These studies elucidated metabolic interaction between chloroplasts and cytoplasm during photosynthesis. Experiments with isolated intact chloroplasts clarified that oxygenation of ribulose-1.5-bisphosphate generates glycolate in photorespiration. The development of non-invasive optical methods enabled researchers identifying mechanisms that balance electron flow in the photosynthetic electron transport system avoiding its over-reduction. Recording chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence allowed one to monitor, among other parameters, thermal energy dissipation by means of 'nonphotochemical quenching' of the excited state of Chl a. Furthermore, studies both in vivo and in vitro led to basic understanding of the biochemical mechanisms of freezing damage and frost tolerance of plant leaves, to SO2 tolerance of tree leaves and dehydrating lichens and mosses.

Abstract:This invited memoir looks back on my scientific career that straddles the solar and stellar branches of astrophysics, with sprinklings of historical context and personal opinion. Except for a description of my life up to my Ph.D. phase, the structure is thematic rather than purely chronological, focusing on those topics that I worked on throughout substantial parts of my life: stars like the Sun and the Sun-as-a-star, surface field evolution, coronal structure and dynamics, heliophysics education, and space weather. Luck and a broadly inquisitive frame of mind shaped a fortunate life on two continents, taking me from one amazing mentor, colleague, and friend to another, working in stimulating settings to interpret data from state-of-the-art space observatories.

He left an unforgettable mark on our hearts and personal memories. His way of thinking left an imprint on students, young scientists and co-workers. We accompany all that with warm farewell applause as an appreciation of Stefan’s way and effects throughout his life.

Abstract:The paper is dedicated to the presentation of professor Hugo Steinhaus--co-founder of the Lwów School of Mathematics. It is indicated that had it not been for the scholar, the founding and development of the Lwów School of Mathematics would have been almost impossible. The analyses focus on his undertakings during the Lvov period in the early 1920s and those events that preceded the founding of the school (namely Steinhaus's education at the Göttingen University, various meetings and gatherings, discussions, first fascinations and mathematical dissertations). This paper, however, does not look into the scientific output of Steinhaus, only presents his method of scientific work and highlights the strategy that he chose in order to create the scientific community. An attempt has been also made to justify the effectiveness of the adopted strategy by describing the scientific atmosphere of Lvov and intellectual potential of the students of the school. Steinhaus's activities in the 1930s will be only marginally presented with an impact on particularly interesting cooperation with the alumni of the Lwów School of Mathematics--Marek Kac, Stefan Kaczmarz, Paweł Nikliborec and scholars from other fields of science (as part of the process of the application of mathematics).

Abstract:Georg Bretthauer war von 1997 bis 2015 Ordinarius für Angewandte Informatik/Automatisierungstechnik an der Universität Karlsruhe und Leiter des Institutes für Angewandte Informatik/Automatisierungstechnik (AIA) in der Fakultät für Maschinenbau der Universität Karlsruhe sowie Leiter des Institutes für Angewandte Informatik im Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (IAI) (heute KIT). Von 2002 bis 2018 war er der Herausgeber der Fachzeitschrift "Automatisierungstechnik - at". Seine wissenschaftlichen Interessen gelten der Modellbildung und Identifikation, der Automatisierungs-technik, der Mechatronik und der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Frey wurde 2009 auf den Lehrstuhl für Prozessautomatisierung an der Universität des Saarlandes (Nachfolge von Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hartmut Janocha) berufen, der zwischenzeitlich in Lehrstuhl für Automatisierungs- und Energiesysteme umgewidmet wurde. Zudem leitet er den Forschungsbereich Industrial Security am Zentrum für Mechatronik und Automatisierungstechnik (ZeMA) in Saarbrücken. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind modellbasierte Entwurfsverfahren für Automatisierungs- und Energiesysteme, Steuerungstechnik, Simulation, Safety und Security. Seit Mitte 2023 ist er zudem Chefredakteur Science der Zeitschrift atp - Magazin. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Seelecke ist seit 2011 Inhaber des Lehrstuhles für Unkonventionelle Aktorik an der Universität des Saarlandes. Der Lehrstuhl wurde 2015 in Lehrstuhl für Intelligente Materialsysteme (iMSL) umbenannt und gehört heute zu den Fachrichtungen Systems Engineering sowie Materialwissenschaften und Werkstofftechnik. Aufbauend auf zahlreichen DFG-geförderten Grundlagenforschungsprojekten steht die anwendungsorientierte Entwicklung neuer Technologien mit intelligenten Materialien, speziell elektroaktiven Polymeren und Formgedächtnislegierungen, im Fokus der Arbeitsgruppe.
