Abstract:Lignin, a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, is crucial to plant growth and development but is a major impediment to efficient biomass utilization in various processes. Valorizing lignin is increasingly realized as being essential. However, rapid condensation of lignin during acidic extraction leads to the formation of recalcitrant condensed units that, along with similar units and structural heterogeneity in native lignin, drastically limits product yield and selectivity. Catechyl lignin (C-lignin), which is essentially a benzodioxane homopolymer without condensed units, might represent an ideal lignin for valorization, as it circumvents these issues. We discovered that C-lignin is highly acid-resistant. Hydrogenolysis of C-lignin resulted in the cleavage of all benzodioxane structures to produce catechyl-type monomers in near-quantitative yield with a selectivity of 90% to a single monomer.

Abstract:Lignocellulose is a key starting material for the production of biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. This review discusses various catalytic systems, including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic systems, for biomass valorization. Different strategies of biomass‐derived catalyst systems for value‐added chemicals are evaluated. Novel strategies for using biomass‐derived carbon‐based catalysts are proposed as a potential way to make the valorization process economically viable. Abstract:As an abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin has the potential to produce various chemicals, biofuels of interest through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. However, lignin valorization is hindered by a series of constraints such as heterogeneous polymeric nature, intrinsic recalcitrance, strong smell, dark colour, challenges in lignocelluloses fractionation and the presence of high bond dissociation enthalpies in its functional groups etc. Nowadays, industrial lignin is mostly combusted for electricity production and the recycling of inorganic compounds involved in the pulping process. Given the research and development on lignin valorization in recent years, important applications such as lignin-based hydrogels, surfactants, three-dimensional printing materials, electrodes and production of fine chemicals have been systematically reviewed. Finally, this review highlights the main constraints affecting industrial lignin valorization, possible solutions and future perspectives, in the light of its abundance and its potential applications reported in the scientific literature.

Abstract:The exploration of effective approaches for the valorization of lignin to valuable products attracts broad interests of a growing scientific community. By fully unlocking the potential of the world's most abundant resource of bio-aromatics, it could improve the profitability and carbon efficiency of the entire biorefinery process, thus accelerate the replacement of fossil resources with bioresources in our society. The successful realization of this goal depends on the development of technologies to overcome the following challenges, including: 1) efficient biomass pretreatment and lignin separation technologies that overcomes its diverse structure and complex chemistry challenges to obtain high purity lignin; 2) advanced chemical analysis for precise quantitative characterization of the lignin in chemical transformation processes; 3) novel approaches for conversion of biomass-derived lignin to valuable products. This review summarizes the latest cutting-edge innovations of lignin chemical valorization with the focus on the aforementioned three key aspects.

Abstract:According to an old proverb, 'you can make anything out of lignin, except money'. The complexity of lignin's structure and many inferior characteristics of lignin, such as its insolubility in organic solvent and poor reactivity related to it large molecular weight, have posed significant challenges to lignin valorization. Driven mainly by the commercial availability of large amounts of kraft lignin and hydrolysis lignin in kraft pulp mills and cellulosic ethanol plants, there is a pressing need to valorize lignin for high‐value chemical and material products for better overall profitability for the plants, and for the emerging bioeconomy. To this end, we have developed, over 10 years and in several publications, an engineering approach to lignin valorization. This perspective paper provides an overview of this process and concretizes the research achieved in support of lignin valorization. In the method presented, lignin is first de‐polymerized into de‐polymerized lignin (DL) at a high yield and with a tunable Mw (weight average molecular weight). The DL is then utilized as a mixture (no separation needed) to substitute directly petroleum‐based phenol (up to 75% substitution), polyols (up to 50% substitution), and bis‐phenol A (100 substitution) in preparation of bio‐based phenolic resins, polyurethane foams, and epoxy resins. The DL products were also used to replace petroleum‐based antioxidants resulting in enhanced thermo‐oxidative and thermal stability of polyethylene in the synthesis of bio‐based resins / plastic composites. This approach has demonstrated both technical and economic feasibility, generating a payback period of approximately 3 years for a commercial capacity of 40 000 t/y. Thus, Lignin valorization beyond energy use can be profitable, and the old proverb may prove wrong. Abstract:Lignin is an important biomass resource to replace petrochemical industry for carbon neutrality. However, it is challenged by unyielding the trade-off between activity and selectivity owing to the chemical complexity and inherent heterogeneity of lignin biomacromolecule. Herein, we report that copper nanomaterial (CuO/C) derived from metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) could effectively catalytic hydrogenolysis of herbaceous plants into monomeric phenols (up to 29.5 wt%) through a lignin-first strategy, affording methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate ( 1-H ) and methyl 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) propionate ( 2-G ) as the main monophenols with high selectivity of 31.9% and 17.3%. Moreover, we proposed two synthetic routes based on the purification and functionalization of those two compounds ( 1-H and 2-G ) to synthesis 3-(4-carboxyphenyl) propionic acid and functional polyesters. Subsequent studies revealed that the temperature of 50% mass loss of the two polyesters reached 430–440 °C, indicating their robust thermal stability; while the DSC curves showed the difference between the two polymers in glass conversion temperature (T g ) and crystallization. In brief, this work opens a new avenue for the production of lignin-derived chemicals and materials.

Abstract:Background Lignin, nature’s dominant aromatic polymer, is found in most terrestrial plants in the approximate range of 15 to 40% dry weight and provides structural integrity. Traditionally, most large-scale industrial processes that use plant polysaccharides have burned lignin to generate the power needed to productively transform biomass. The advent of biorefineries that convert cellulosic biomass into liquid transportation fuels will generate substantially more lignin than necessary to power the operation, and therefore efforts are underway to transform it to value-added products. Advances Bioengineering to modify lignin structure and/or incorporate atypical components has shown promise toward facilitating recovery and chemical transformation of lignin under biorefinery conditions. The flexibility in lignin monomer composition has proven useful for enhancing extraction efficiency. Both the mining of genetic variants in native populations of bioenergy crops and direct genetic manipulation of biosynthesis pathways have produced lignin feedstocks with unique properties for coproduct development. Advances in analytical chemistry and computational modeling detail the structure of the modified lignin and direct bioengineering strategies for targeted properties. Refinement of biomass pretreatment technologies has further facilitated lignin recovery and enables catalytic modifications for desired chemical and physical properties. Outlook Potential high-value products from isolated lignin include low-cost carbon fiber, engineering plastics and thermoplastic elastomers, polymeric foams and membranes, and a variety of fuels and chemicals all currently sourced from petroleum. These lignin coproducts must be low cost and perform as well as petroleum-derived counterparts. Each product stream has its own distinct challenges. Development of renewable lignin-based polymers requires improved processing technologies coupled to tailored bioenergy crops incorporating lignin with the desired chemical and physical properties. For fuels and chemicals, multiple strategies have emerged for lignin depolymerization and upgrading, including thermochemical treatments and homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The multifunctional nature of lignin has historically yielded multiple product streams, which require extensive separation and purification procedures, but engineering plant feedstocks for greater structural homogeneity and tailored functionality reduces this challenge.

Abstract:Lignin, a rigid polymer composed of phenolic subunits with high molecular weight and complex structure, ranks behind only cellulose in the contribution to the biomass of plants. Therefore, lignin can be used as a new environmentally friendly resource for the industrial production of a variety of polymers, dyes and adhesives. Since laccase was found to be able to degrade lignin, increasing attention had been paid to the valorization of lignin. Research has mainly focused on the identification of lignin-degrading enzymes, which play a key role in lignin biodegradation, and the potential application of lignin degradation products. In this review, we describe the source, catalytic specificity and enzyme reaction mechanism of the four classes of the lignin-degrading enzymes so far discovered. In addition, the major pathways of lignin biodegradation and the applications of the degradative products are also discussed. Lignin-degrading bacteria or enzymes can be used in combination with chemical pretreatment for the production of value-added chemicals from lignin, providing a promising strategy for lignin valorization.

Abstract:Lignin is a cross linked aromatic polymer and it is abundant in nature. It is regarded as a potential substitute of fossil resource and industrial raw materials due to its highly aromatic character via lignin valorization and commercialization. Lignin depolymerization is an effective solution to achieve lignin valorization by yielding value-added fine chemicals (such as monophenols and biofuels). Due to their stable structure, complex spatial configurations and electronic effect, lignin depolymerization often suffered from serious condensation and complexity of products. Commonly, this results in low yield and selectivity that limit large scale of lignin depolymerization. A challenge exists, however, on how to develop high selective catalytic strategies/reactors, which would enable efficient and selective catalysis by controlling the bond breaking mode and inhibiting the condensation of active intermedia. In this review, we begin by introducing the potential of lignin as an emerging star for lignin commercialization. And then catalytic depolymerization strategy (e.g., catalytic pyrolysis, catalytic hydrolysis, catalytic oxidation, catalytic reduction and two-step redox) and also their selective bond breaking mechanism are reviewed. Particularly, we report latest vision about lignin highly efficient valorization targeting at reaching market, by controlling of reaction condensation and using continuous-flow reactor depolymerization. Most importantly, the limitations and potential solutions for lignin depolymerization are proposed to present opportunities for future industrialization applications.

Abstract:Most of the research studies in the field of lignin valorization has been achieved on lignin from paper and pulp industries. The key merit of utilizing lignin from the facilities is that resources are already centralized, and the costs of transportation to further process are fundamentally less compared to possible sources. Biomass composed of lignin, hemicelluloses, and cellulose (also known as lignocellulosic biomass) is both plentiful and renewable. The three polymer groups may be isolated and chemically transformed to provide a wide variety of bio-generated value-added materials, chemical, and fuels. To maximize the value of the biomass feedstock as a whole, it is best to extract these products via a streamlined, integrated models of pathways concerned with catalytic reactions i.e., bio-refinery. In this article, upstream processing is analyzed in depth, including the phenylpropanoid route, bioengineered lignins, and lignin bioengineering. The last section addresses the difficulties inherent in lignin bioengineering from a technical and practical standpoint.

Abstract:Abstract Developing novel techniques to convert lignin into sustainable chemicals and functional materials is a critical route toward the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Lignin-derived carbon materials hold great promise for applications in energy and chemical engineering, catalysis and environmental remediation. In this review, the state-of-art sciences and technologies for controllable synthesis of lignin-derived carbon materials are summarized, pore structure engineering, crystalline engineering, and morphology controlling methodologies are thoroughly outlined and critically discussed. Green chemical engineering with cost-effectiveness and precise carbonization tuning microstructure are future research trends of lignin-derived carbon materials. Future research directions that could be employed to advance lignin-derived carbon materials toward commercial applications are then proposed.

Abstract:Lignin is an abundant biopolymer with a high carbon content and high aromaticity. Despite its potential as a raw material for the fuel and chemical industries, lignin remains the most poorly utilised of the lignocellulosic biopolymers. Effective valorisation of lignin requires careful fine-tuning of multiple "upstream" (i.e., lignin bioengineering, lignin isolation and "early-stage catalytic conversion of lignin") and "downstream" (i.e., lignin depolymerisation and upgrading) process stages, demanding input and understanding from a broad array of scientific disciplines. This review provides a "beginning-to-end" analysis of the recent advances reported in lignin valorisation. Particular emphasis is placed on the improved understanding of lignin's biosynthesis and structure, differences in structure and chemical bonding between native and technical lignins, emerging catalytic valorisation strategies, and the relationships between lignin structure and catalyst performance.

Abstract:Lignocellulose is mainly composed of hydrophobic lignin and hydrophilic polysaccharide polymers, contributing to an indispensable carbon resource for green biorefineries 1,2 . When chemically treated, lignin is compromised owing to detrimental intra- and intermolecular crosslinking that hampers downstream process 3,4 . The current valorization paradigms aim to avoid the formation of new C–C bonds, referred to as condensation, by blocking or stabilizing the vulnerable moieties of lignin 5,6,7 . Although there have been efforts to enhance biomass utilization through the incorporation of phenolic additives 8,9 , exploiting lignin's proclivity towards condensation remains unproven for valorizing both lignin and carbohydrates to high-value products. Here we leverage the proclivity by directing the C–C bond formation in a catalytic arylation pathway using lignin-derived phenols with high nucleophilicity. The selectively condensed lignin, isolated in near-quantitative yields while preserving its prominent cleavable β-ether units, can be unlocked in a tandem catalytic process involving aryl migration and transfer hydrogenation. Lignin in wood is thereby converted to benign bisphenols (34–48 wt%) that represent performance-advantaged replacements for their fossil-based counterparts. Delignified pulp from cellulose and xylose from xylan are co-produced for textile fibres and renewable chemicals. This condensation-driven strategy represents a key advancement complementary to other promising monophenol-oriented approaches targeting valuable platform chemicals and materials, thereby contributing to holistic biomass valorization.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest in advanced technology that transforms biomass-derived feedstock into renewable chemicals. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignin into low-molecular-weight fragments (e.g., monomer, dimer, and oligomer), and subsequent catalyzed transformations, offer the promise of unlocking diverse aromatic products. In consideration of the diversity of lignin feedstocks, we shed light on the impact of variations in lignin structure on the conversion efficiency. This review aims to present the latest advances in the HTL of lignin and highlights key factors (reaction solvent, temperature, catalysts, and in particular lignin types) in reductive/oxidative processes by evaluating the yield of aromatic monomers and the selectivity of target products. The mechanistic studies based on lignin model compounds were summarized to provide deep understanding of the reaction pathways to prove the crucial roles of lignin structures and high-performance catalysts in controlling catalytic activity. Abstract:The efficient valorization of lignin could dictate the success of the 2 nd generation biorefinery. Lignin, accounting for on average a third of the lignocellulosic biomass, is the most promising candidate for sustainable production of value‐added phenolics. However, the structural alteration induced during the lignin isolation is often depleting his potential for value‐added chemicals. Recently, catalytic reductive depolymerization of lignin has appeared to be a promising and effective method for its valorization to obtain phenolic monomers. The present study systematically summarizes the far‐reaching and state‐of‐the‐art lignin valorization strategies during different stages, including conventional catalytic depolymerization of technical lignin, emerging reductive catalytic fractionation of protolignin, stabilization strategies to inhibit the undesired condensation reactions and further catalytic upgrading of lignin‐derived monomers. Finally, the potential challenges for the future researches on the efficient valorization of lignin and possible solutions are proposed.
