Abstract:Mating swarms of flying male insects are a form of collective behaviour, albeit one different from flocks and schools as they do not display ordered collective movements. In recent years, much progress has been made in uncovering the emergent mechanical-like and thermodynamic-like of such swarms. Nonetheless, two basic properties of this swarming behaviour remain unexplained. Namely, why do individual insects have erratic rather than regular flight patterns? And why are the swarms elliptical rather than circular? Here I account for this seemingly undue complexity. I show that regular flight patterns weaken an individual's attraction to the swarm centre, making swarms less resilient to the presence of environmental disturbances. I then show that the elliptical shape of swarms of the non-biting midge Chironomus riparius optimizes the trade-off between maximizing swarm size (target size for females) and maximizing swarm stability. Finally, I show that the observed excess velocity kurtosis of swarming C. riparius maximizes swarm cohesiveness. Taken together the new results provide the first tentative evidence for fine-tuning in insect mating swarms driven by selection pressure for advantageous behaviours.

Collective Behaviour without Collective Order in Wild Swarms of Midges

Abstract:Collective behaviour is a widespread phenomenon in biology, cutting through a huge span of scales, from cell colonies up to bird flocks and fish schools. The most prominent trait of collective behaviour is the emergence of global order: individuals synchronize their states, giving the stunning impression that the group behaves as one. In many biological systems, though, it is unclear whether global order is present. A paradigmatic case is that of insect swarms, whose erratic movements seem to suggest that group formation is a mere epiphenomenon of the independent interaction of each individual with an external landmark. In these cases, whether or not the group behaves truly collectively is debated. Here, we experimentally study swarms of midges in the field and measure how much the change of direction of one midge affects that of other individuals. We discover that, despite the lack of collective order, swarms display very strong correlations, totally incompatible with models of non-interacting particles. We find that correlation increases sharply with the swarm's density, indicating that the interaction between midges is based on a metric perception mechanism. By means of numerical simulations we demonstrate that such growing correlation is typical of a system close to an ordering transition. Our findings suggest that correlation, rather than order, is the true hallmark of collective behaviour in biological systems.

Abstract:Collective behaviour in biological systems is often accompanied by strong correlations. The question has therefore arisen of whether correlation is amplified by the vicinity to some critical point in the parameters space. Biological systems, though, are typically quite far from the thermodynamic limit, so that the value of the control parameter at which correlation and susceptibility peak depend on size. Hence, a system would need to readjust its control parameter according to its size in order to be maximally correlated. This readjustment, though, has never been observed experimentally. By gathering three-dimensional data on swarms of midges in the field we find that swarms tune their control parameter and size so as to maintain a scaling behaviour of the correlation function. As a consequence, correlation length and susceptibility scale with the system's size and swarms exhibit a near-maximal degree of correlation at all sizes.
Spatial and temporal characteristics of laboratory-induced swarms: shape, structure and flight kinematics

Abstract:mosquitoes mate at sunset in aerial swarms. The development of mating-based methods for effective malaria vector control requires a good knowledge of the flight behaviour of species in mating swarms. However, the process of how swarms are formed and maintained remains poorly understood. Here, we characterized the three-dimensional spatial and temporal flight kinematics of males swarming above a ground marker. We observed that the location, shape and volume of swarms were highly stereotypic, consistent over the swarming duration, regardless of the number of individuals in the swarm. The swarm had an elliptical cone shape, and we observed a differential spatial distribution of flight kinematics parameters within the swarm volume. Among these parameters, only swarm density varied with swarm size. Using a sensory system-informed model, we show that swarm location and shape can accurately be modelled based on visual perception of the marker. To control swarm height, swarming individuals maintain an optical angle of the marker ranging from 24° to 55°. Limiting the viewing angle deviation to 4.5% of the maximum value results in the observed elliptical cone swarm shape. We discuss the implications of these finding in mating success, speciation and for vector control.

Abstract:During mating season, males of synchronous firefly species flash in unison within swarms of thousands of individuals. These strongly-correlated collective displays have inspired numerous mathematical models to explain how global synchronous patterns emerge from local interactions. Yet, experimental data to validate these models remains sparse. To address this gap, we develop a method for three-dimensional tracking of firefly flashes, using a stereoscopic setup of 360-degree cameras. We apply this method to record flashing displays of the North American synchronous species Photinus carolinus in its natural habitat as well as within controlled environments, and obtain the 3D reconstruction of flash occurrences in the swarm. Our results show that even a small number of interacting males synchronize their flashes; however, periodic flash bursts only occur in groups larger than 15 males. Moreover, flash occurrences are correlated over several meters, indicating long-range interactions. While this suggests emergent collective behaviour and cooperation, we identify distinct individual trajectories that hint at additional competitive mechanisms. These reveal possible behavioural differentiation with early flashers being more mobile and flashing longer than late followers. Our experimental technique is inexpensive and easily implemented. It is extensible to tracking light communication in various firefly species and flight trajectories in other insect swarms.

Abstract:We present a biologically plausible dynamics model to simulate swarms of flying insects. Our formulation, which is based on biological conclusions and experimental observations, is designed to simulate large insect swarms of varying densities. We use a hybrid formulation that combines a force-based model to capture different interactions between the insects with a data-driven noise model, and computes collision-free trajectories. We introduce a quantitative metric to evaluate the accuracy of such multi-agent systems and model the inherent noise. We highlight the performance of our dynamics model for simulating large flying swarms of midges, fruit fly, locusts and moths. In practice, our approach can generate many collective behaviors, including aggregation, migration, phase transition, and escape responses, and we highlight the benefits over prior methods.

Abstract:The collective motion of groups of animals emerges from the net effect of the interactions between individual members of the group. In many cases, such as birds, fish, or ungulates, these interactions are mediated by sensory stimuli that predominantly arise from nearby neighbors. But not all stimuli in animal groups are short range. Here, we consider mating swarms of midges, which are thought to interact primarily via long-range acoustic stimuli. We exploit the similarity in form between the decay of acoustic and gravitational sources to build a model for swarm behavior. By accounting for the adaptive nature of the midges’ acoustic sensing, we show that our ‘adaptive gravity’ model makes mean-field predictions that agree well with experimental observations of laboratory swarms. Our results highlight the role of sensory mechanisms and interaction range in collective animal behavior. Additionally, the adaptive interactions that we present here open a new class of equations of motion, which may appear in other biological contexts.

Abstract:We report on the effect of spatially correlated noise on the velocities of self propelled particles. Correlations in the random forces acting on self propelled particles can induce directed collective motion, i.e. swarming. Even with repulsive coupling in the velocity directions, which favors a disordered state, strong correlations in the fluctuations can align the velocities locally leading to a macroscopic, turbulent velocity field. On the other hand, while spatially correlated noise is aligning the velocities locally, the swarming transition to globally directed motion is inhibited when the correlation length of the noise is nonzero, but smaller than the system size. We analyze the swarming transition in $d$ dimensional space in a mean field model of globally coupled velocity vectors.

Abstract:Purpose: To present an algorithm for spatially sorting objects into an annular structure. Design/Methodology/Approach: A swarm-based model that requires only stochastic agent behaviour coupled with a pheromone-inspired "attraction-repulsion" mechanism. Findings: The algorithm consistently generates high-quality annular structures, and is particularly powerful in situations where the initial configuration of objects is similar to those observed in nature. Research limitations/implications: Experimental evidence supports previous theoretical arguments about the nature and mechanism of spatial sorting by insects. Practical implications: The algorithm may find applications in distributed robotics. Originality/value: The model offers a powerful minimal algorithmic framework, and also sheds further light on the nature of attraction-repulsion algorithms and underlying natural processes.

Insect swarms can be bound together by repulsive forces

Abstract:The cohesion of insect swarms has been attributed to the fact that the resultant internal interactions of the swarming insects produce, on the average, a centrally attractive force that acts on each individual. Here it is shown how insect swarms can also be bound together by centrally forces that on the average are repulsive (outwardly directed from the swarm centres). This is predicted to arise when velocity statistics are heterogeneous (position-dependent). Evidence for repulsive forces is found in laboratory swarms of Chironomus riparius midges. In homogeneous swarms, the net inward acceleration balances the tendency of diffusion (stochastic noise) to transport individuals away from the centre of the swarm. In heterogenous swarms, turbophoresis --the tendency for individuals to migrate in the direction of decreasing kinetic energy-- is operating. The new finding adds to the growing realization that insect swarms are analogous to self-gravitating systems. By acting in opposition to central attraction (gravity), the effects of heterogeneous velocities (energies) are analogous to the effects of dark energy. The emergence of resultant forces from collective behaviours would not be possible if individual flight patterns were themselves unstable. It is shown how individuals reduce the potential for the loose of flight control by minimizing the influence of jerks to which they are subjected.
Power laws of natural swarms as fingerprints of an extended critical region

Abstract:Collective biological systems display power laws for macroscopic quantities and are fertile probing grounds for statistical physics. Besides power laws, natural insect swarms present strong scale-free correlations, suggesting closeness to phase transitions. Swarms exhibit imperfect dynamic scaling: their dynamical correlation functions collapse into single curves when written as functions of the scaled time tξ−z ( ξ : correlation length, z : dynamic exponent), but only for short times. Triggered by markers, natural swarms are not invariant under space translations. Measured static and dynamic critical exponents differ from those of equilibrium and many nonequilibrium phase transitions. Here we show the following: (i) The recently discovered scale-free-chaos phase transition of the harmonically confined Vicsek model has a novel extended critical region for N (finite) insects that contains several critical lines. (ii) As alignment noise vanishes, there are power laws connecting critical confinement and noise that allow calculating static critical exponents for fixed N . These power laws imply that the unmeasurable confinement strength is proportional to the perception range measured in natural swarms. (iii) Observations of natural swarms occur at different times and under different atmospheric conditions, which we mimic by considering mixtures of data on different critical lines and N . Abstract:Swarmalators are oscillators that can swarm as well as sync via a dynamic balance between their spatial proximity and phase similarity. Swarmalator models employed so far in the literature comprise only one-dimensional phase variables to represent the intrinsic dynamics of the natural collectives. Nevertheless, the latter can indeed be represented more realistically by high-dimensional phase variables. For instance, the alignment of velocity vectors in a school of fish or a flock of birds can be more realistically set up in three-dimensional space, while the alignment of opinion formation in population dynamics could be multidimensional, in general. We present a generalized D -dimensional swarmalator model, which more accurately captures self-organizing behaviors of a plethora of real-world collectives by self-adaptation of high-dimensional spatial and phase variables. For a more sensible visualization and interpretation of the results, we restrict our simulations to three-dimensional spatial and phase variables. Our model provides a framework for modeling complicated processes such as flocking, schooling of fish, cell sorting during embryonic development, residential segregation, and opinion dynamics in social groups. We demonstrate its versatility by capturing the maneuvers of a school of fish, qualitatively and quantitatively, by a suitable extension of the original model to incorporate appropriate features besides a gallery of its intrinsic self-organizations for various interactions. Abstract:Bacteria are perhaps the simplest living systems capable of complex behaviour involving sensing and coherent, collective behaviour an example of which is the phenomena of swarming on agar surfaces. Two fundamental questions in bacterial swarming is how the information gathered by individual members of the swarm is shared across the swarm leading to coordinated swarm behaviour and what specific advantages does membership of the swarm provide its members in learning about their environment. In this article, we show a remarkable example of the collective advantage of a bacterial swarm which enables it to sense inert obstacles along its path. Agent based computational model of swarming revealed that independent individual behaviour in response to a two-component signalling mechanism could produce such behaviour. This is striking because independent individual behaviour without any explicit communication between agents was found to be sufficient for the swarm to effectively compute the gradient of signalling molecule concentration across the swarm and respond to it.

Abstract:The simultaneous interactions of synchronization and swarming phenomena are the primary basis for the functioning of many natural systems, such as vinegar eels, sperms, and magnetic particles. Investigating the dual behavior of these particles, which are called swarmalators, has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. However, more needs to be done to analyze the dynamics of swarmalators separately. This paper explores the dynamics of the swarmalators' movements individually over time in two-dimensional plane. This study's findings represent that based on the two rules of high sensitivity to the initial conditions and the positive largest Lyapunov exponent, the swarmalators' movements in the dynamic states have a chaotic nature. This result can lead to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of natural swarmalators. It may provide an opportunity for other researchers to analyze the individual behavior of swarmalators along with their collective behavior.

Dynamics of Social Interactions and Agent Spreading in Social Insects Colonies: Effects of Environmental Events and Spatial Heterogeneity

Abstract: The relationship between division of labor and individuals' spatial behavior in social insect colonies provides a useful context to study how social interactions influence the spreading of agent (which could be information or virus) across distributed agent systems. In social insect colonies, spatial heterogeneity associated with variations of individual task roles, affects social contacts, and thus the way in which agent moves through social contact networks. We used an Agent Based Model (ABM) to mimic three realistic scenarios of agent spreading in social insect colonies. Our model suggests that individuals within a specific task interact more with consequences that agent could potentially spread rapidly within that group, while agent spreads slower between task groups. Our simulations show a strong linear relationship between the degree of spatial heterogeneity and social contact rates, and that the spreading dynamics of agents follow a modified nonlinear logistic growth model with varied transmission rates for different scenarios. Our work provides an important insights on the dual-functionality of physical contacts. This dual-functionality is often driven via variations of individual spatial behavior, and can have both inhibiting and facilitating effects on agent transmission rates depending on environment. The results from our proposed model not only provide important insights on mechanisms that generate spatial heterogeneity, but also deepen our understanding of how social insect colonies balance the benefit and cost of physical contacts on the agents' transmission under varied environmental conditions.

Abstract:Previous work has suggested that disordered swarms of flying insects can be well modeled as self-gravitating systems, as long as the "gravitational" interaction is adaptive. Motivated by this work we compare the predictions of the classic, mean-field King model for isothermal globular clusters to observations of insect swarms. Detailed numerical simulations of regular and adaptive gravity allow us to expose the features of the swarms' density profiles that are captured by the King model phenomenology, and those that are due to adaptivity and short-range repulsion. Our results provide further support for adaptive gravity as a model for swarms.

How swarm size during evolution impacts the behavior, generalizability, and brain complexity of animats performing a spatial navigation task

Abstract:While it is relatively easy to imitate and evolve natural swarm behavior in simulations, less is known about the social characteristics of simulated, evolved swarms, such as the optimal (evolutionary) group size, why individuals in a swarm perform certain actions, and how behavior would change in swarms of different sizes. To address these questions, we used a genetic algorithm to evolve animats equipped with Markov Brains in a spatial navigation task that facilitates swarm behavior. The animats' goal was to frequently cross between two rooms without colliding with other animats. Animats were evolved in swarms of various sizes. We then evaluated the task performance and social behavior of the final generation from each evolution when placed with swarms of different sizes in order to evaluate their generalizability across conditions. According to our experiments, we find that swarm size during evolution matters: animats evolved in a balanced swarm developed more flexible behavior, higher fitness across conditions, and, in addition, higher brain complexity.

Cognitive swarming in complex environments with attractor dynamics and oscillatory computing

Abstract:Neurobiological theories of spatial cognition developed with respect to recording data from relatively small and/or simplistic environments compared to animals' natural habitats. It has been unclear how to extend theoretical models to large or complex spaces. Complementarily, in autonomous systems technology, applications have been growing for distributed control methods that scale to large numbers of low-footprint mobile platforms. Animals and many-robot groups must solve common problems of navigating complex and uncertain environments. Here, we introduce the NeuroSwarms control framework to investigate whether adaptive, autonomous swarm control of minimal artificial agents can be achieved by direct analogy to neural circuits of rodent spatial cognition. NeuroSwarms analogizes agents to neurons and swarming groups to recurrent networks. We implemented neuron-like agent interactions in which mutually visible agents operate as if they were reciprocally connected place cells in an attractor network. We attributed a phase state to agents to enable patterns of oscillatory synchronization similar to hippocampal models of theta-rhythmic (5-12 Hz) sequence generation. We demonstrate that multi-agent swarming and reward-approach dynamics can be expressed as a mobile form of Hebbian learning and that NeuroSwarms supports a single-entity paradigm that directly informs theoretical models of animal cognition. We present emergent behaviors including phase-organized rings and trajectory sequences that interact with environmental cues and geometry in large, fragmented mazes. Thus, NeuroSwarms is a model artificial spatial system that integrates autonomous control and theoretical neuroscience to potentially uncover common principles to advance both domains.

Abstract:Models of social interaction dynamics have been powerful tools for understanding the efficiency of information spread and the robustness of task allocation in social insect colonies. How workers spatially distribute within the colony, or spatial heterogeneity degree (SHD), plays a vital role in contact dynamics, influencing information spread and task allocation. We used agent-based models to explore factors affecting spatial heterogeneity and information flow, including the number of task groups, variation in spatial arrangements, and levels of task switching, to study: (1) the impact of multiple task groups on SHD, contact dynamics, and information spread, and (2) the impact of task switching on SHD and contact dynamics. Both models show a strong linear relationship between the dynamics of SHD and contact dynamics, which exists for different initial conditions. The multiple-task-group model without task switching reveals the impacts of the number and spatial arrangements of task locations on information transmission. The task-switching model allows task-switching with a probability through contact between individuals. The model indicates that the task-switching mechanism enables a dynamical state of task-related spatial fidelity at the individual level. This spatial fidelity can assist the colony in redistributing their workforce, with consequent effects on the dynamics of spatial heterogeneity degree. The spatial fidelity of a task group is the proportion of workers who perform that task and have preferential walking styles toward their task location. Our analysis shows that the task switching rate between two tasks is an exponentially decreasing function of the spatial fidelity and contact rate. Higher spatial fidelity leads to more agents aggregating to task location, reducing contact between groups, thus making task switching more difficult. Our results provide important insights into the mechanisms that generate spatial heterogeneity and deepen our understanding of how spatial heterogeneity impacts task allocation, social interaction, and information spread.
