Abstract:In Finsler geometry, the Minkowski space is a generalization of the Euclidean space. We will brief isometric immersions of Finsler manifolds in Minkowski spaces, in particular, minimal immersions. The volume variation and the mean curvature of Finsler submanifolds in a Minkowski space are given. Some Bernstein type theorems and non-trivial examples for minimal surfaces in Minkowski spaces are shown.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a connected compact surface $\Sigma$, and $M$ be an integer homology 3-sphere. We show that if each element of $G$ is extendable over $M$ with respect to a fixed embedding $\Sigma\rightarrow M$, then $G$ is extendable over some $M'$ which is 1-dominated by $M$. From this result, in the orientable category we classify all periodic automorphisms of closed surfaces that are extendable over the 3-sphere. The corresponding embedded surface of such an automorphism can always be a Heegaard surface.

Abstract:In this paper we define two regular homotopy invariants c and i for immersions of oriented 3-manifolds into R^5 in a geometric manner. The pair (c(f),i(f)) completely describes the regular homotopy class of the immersion f. The invariant i corresponds to the 3-dimensional obstruction that arises from Hirsch-Smale theory and extends the one defined in [10] for immersions with trivial normal bundle.

Abstract:We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of immersions into non-zero curvature space forms, leading to a model for the transitioning of hypersurfaces among H^n, AdS^n, dS^n and S^n; 3) we prove that a holomorphic family of immersion data corresponds to a holomorphic family of immersions, providing an effective way to construct holomorphic maps into the SO(n,C)-character variety. In particular we will point out a simpler proof of the holomorphicity of the complex landslide; 4) we see how, under certain hypothesis, complex metrics on a surface (i.e. complex bilinear forms of its complexified tangent bundle) of constant curvature -1 correspond to pairs of projective surfaces with the same holonomy. Applying Bers Double Uniformization Theorem to this construction we prove a Uniformization Theorem for complex metrics on a surface.

Abstract:A periodic automorphism of a surface $\Sigma$ is said to be extendable over $S^3$ if it extends to a periodic automorphism of the pair $(S^3,\Sigma)$ for some possible embedding $\Sigma\to S^3$. We classify and construct all extendable automorphisms of closed surfaces, with orientation-reversing cases included. Moreover, they can all be induced by automorphisms of $S^3$ on Heegaard surfaces. As a by-product, the embeddings of surfaces into lens spaces are discussed.

Abstract:We consider the problem of when a closed hyperbolic surface admits a totally geodesic embedding into a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold, and in particular equivariant versions of such embeddings. In a previous paper we considered orientation-preserving actions on orientable surfaces; in the present paper, we consider large orientation-reversing actions on orientable surfaces, and also large actions on nonorientable surfaces.

Abstract:This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.

Abstract:This article is concerned with locally flatly immersed surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds where the complement of the surface has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. Once the genus and number of double points are fixed, we classify such immersed surfaces in terms of the equivariant intersection form of their exterior and a secondary invariant. Applications include criteria for deciding when an immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surface in $S^4$ is isotopic to the standard immersed surface that is obtained from an unknotted surface by adding local double points. As another application, we enumerate $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $D^4$ with a single double point and boundary a given knot; we prove that the number of such disks may be infinite. We also prove that a knot bounds a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4$ with $c_+$ positive double points and $c_-$ negative double points if and only if it can be converted into an Alexander polynomial one knot via changing $c_+$ positive crossings and $c_-$ negative crossings. In $4$-manifolds other than $D^4$ and $S^4$, applications include measuring the extent to which immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces are determined by the equivariant intersection form of their exterior. Along the way, we prove that any two $\mathbb{Z}^2$-concordances between the Hopf link and an Alexander polynomial one link $L$ are homeomorphic rel. boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth. However, the constructed sublattices are not normal in general.
On geodesic embeddings of hyperbolic surfaces into hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:We consider the problem of when a closed orientable hyperbolic surface admits a totally geodesic embedding into a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold; given a finite isometric group action on the surface, we consider in particular equivariant versions of such an embedding. We prove that an equivariant embedding exists for all finite irreducible group actions on surfaces; such surfaces are known also as quasiplatonic surfaces; in particular, all quasiplatonic surfaces embed geodesically. In the last section, we discuss some cases of more general finite group actions on surfaces.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a proper essential immersed surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary disjoint from a torus boundary component $T$ of $M$. Let $\alpha$ be the set of coannular slopes of $F$ on $T$. The main theorem of the paper shows that there is a constant $K$ and a finite set of slopes $\Lambda$ on $T$, such that if $\beta$ is a slope on $T$ with $\Delta(\beta, \alpha_i) > K$ for all $\alpha_i$ in $\alpha$, and $\beta$ is not in $\Lambda$, then $F$ remains incompressible after Dehn filling on $T$ along the slope $\beta$. In certain sense, this means that $F$ survives most Dehn fillings. The proof uses minimal surface theory, integral of differential forms, and properties of geometrically finite groups. As a consequence of our method, it will also be shown that Freedman tubings of immersed geometrically finite surfaces are essential if the tubes are long enough.

Abstract:This thesis mainly treats two developments of the classical theory of hypersurfaces inside pseudo-Riemannian space forms. The former - a joint work with Francesco Bonsante - consists in the study of immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant curvature -1 (including SL(2,C) with a multiple of its Killing form): this leads to a Gauss-Codazzi theorem, it suggests an approach to holomorphic transitioning of immersions into pseudo-Riemannian space forms, a trick to construct holomorphic maps into the PSL(2,C)-character variety, and leads to a restatement of Bers theorem. The latter - a joint work with Andrea Seppi - consists in the study of immersions of n-manifolds inside the space of geodesics of the hyperbolic (n+1)-space. We give a characterization, in terms of the para-Sasaki structure of this space of geodesics, of the Riemannian immersions which turn out to be Gauss maps of equivariant immersions into the hyperbolic space.
Extensions of Schoen--Simon--Yau and Schoen--Simon theorems via iteration à la De Giorgi

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of the Schoen--Simon--Yau curvature estimates and associated Bernstein-type theorems (1975), and extend the original result by including the case of $6$-dimensional (stable minimal) immersions. The key step is an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem, that assumes smallness of the scale-invariant $L^2$ norm of the second fundamental form. Further, we obtain a graph description, in the Lipschitz multi-valued sense, for any stable minimal immersion of dimension $n\geq 2$, that may have a singular set $\Sigma$ of locally finite $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}$-measure, and that is weakly close to a hyperplane. (In fact, if $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(\Sigma)=0$, the conclusion is strengthened to a union of smooth graphs.) This follows directly from an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem, that assumes smallness of the scale-invariant $L^2$ tilt-excess (verified when the hypersurface is weakly close to a hyperplane). A further direct consequence is that (for an immersed hypersurface of the type considered) any tangent cone supported on a hyperplane is the unique tangent. Specialising the multi-valued decomposition to the case of embeddings, we recover the Schoen--Simon theorem (1981). In both $\epsilon$-regularity theorems the relevant quantity (respectively, length of the second fundamental form and tilt function) solves a non-linear PDE on the immersed minimal hypersurface. The proof is carried out intrinsically (without linearising the PDE) by implementing an iteration method à la De Giorgi (from the linear De Giorgi--Nash--Moser theory). Stability implies estimates (intrinsic weak Caccioppoli inequalities) that make the iteration effective despite the non-linear framework. (In both $\epsilon$-regularity theorems the method gives explicit constants that quantify the required smallness.)

Biharmonic conformal immersions into a 3-dimensional conformally flat space

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Ou [12,17], we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a conformally flat 3-space. We first give a characterization of biharmonic conformal immersions of totally umbilical surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. As an application, we give a method to produce biharmonic conformal immersions into a conformally flat 3-space. We then use the method to obtain a classification of biharmonic maps in a family of conformal immersions and construct many examples of biharmonic conformal immersions from a 2-sphere into a conformal 3-sphere. Our examples include proper biharmonic conformal immersions of a 2-sphere minus a point into a conformal 3-sphere with nonconstant conformal factor and the biharmonic isometric immersion $S^2(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})\to S^3$ which was found in [2]. Finally, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of Hopf cylinders of a Riemannian submersion.

Abstract:We study the basic question of characterizing which boundary homeomorphisms of the unit sphere can be extended to a Sobolev homeomorphism of the interior in 3D space. While the planar variants of this problem are well-understood, completely new and direct ways of constructing an extension are required in 3D. We prove, among other things, that a Sobolev homeomorphism φ : R 2 → onto R 2 in W loc 1 , p ( R 2 , R 2 ) for some p ∈ [ 1 , ∞ ) admits a homeomorphic extension h : R 3 → onto R 3 in W loc 1 , q ( R 3 , R 3 ) for 1 ⩽ q < 3 2 p . Such an extension result is nearly sharp, as the bound q = 3 2 p cannot be improved due to the Hölder embedding. The case q = 3 gains an additional interest as it also provides an L 1 -variant of the celebrated Beurling-Ahlfors quasiconformal extension result.

Abstract:Let (f:{mathbb {C}}rightarrow {mathbb {R}}^3) be a complete Willmore immersion with (int _{Sigma }|A_f|^2u003c+infty ). We will show that if f is the limit of an embedded surface sequence, then f is a plane. As an application, we prove that if (Sigma _k) is a sequence of closed Willmore surfaces embedded in ({mathbb {R}}^3) with (W(Sigma _k)u003cC), and if the conformal class of (Sigma _k) converges in the moduli space, then we can find a Mobius transformation (sigma _k), such that a subsequence of (sigma _k(Sigma _k)) converges smoothly.
