Abstract:Thorium Molten Salt Reactor-500 (TMSR-500), one of the Generation IV nuclear reactors, is designed by Thorcon International, Pte. Ltd, which is projected to be built in Indonesia. The reactor core is radially surrounded by B4C shielding, but not the upper part. As the silo hall sits above the reactor core and is accessible by reactor personnel, the dose rate must be calculated in the area to ensure the workers receive an annual dose below the acceptable limit. The dose rate from neutrons and photons as the result of fission reactions are the only sources to be calculated in this research, without taking the source from fission products into account. This research aims to obtain the dose rate distribution of neutrons and prompt photons using Monte Carlo code MCNP6. The reactor was assumed to operate at a nominal thermal power of 557 MWth. Dose rate calculation was obtained from flux Tally F4 and converted into dose rate using Dose Energy Dose Function (DEDF) factor. Conversion factors of flux to the dose were based on ICRP-21 and ANSI/ANS-6.1.1 1977. The result of the calculations showed that the distribution of neutron and prompt photon fluxes does not reach the silo hall.

Abstract:REVIU IMPLEMENTASI THORCON MOLTEN SALT REACTOR DI INDONESIA. Thorcon Molten Salt Reactor (Thorcon MSR) merupakan jenis PLTN generasi ke-4 yang dirancang oleh Martingle Inc. Amerika Serikat. PLTN ini berbahan bakar, dan berpendingin garam cair , beroperasi pada temperatur tinggi dan tekanannya mendekati tekanan atmosfir. PLTN ini berdaya 1000 MWe yang dihasilkan oleh 4 modul dengan daya masing-masing 250 MWe. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menguraikan dan memberi gambaran tentang kelayakan ThorCon MSR kepada pemangku kepentingan ketika akan diimplementasikan di Indonesia. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah mempelajari berbagai pustaka tentang teknologi Thorcon, ketersediaan SDM, partisipasi nasional dan regulasinya, serta dilakukan dengan analisis SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). Jenis PLTN ini layak diimplementasikan dalam jangka panjang di Indonesia karena mempunyai aspek keselamatan tinggi, dan mudah dikonstruksi tetapi berbagai kendala masih perlu diselesaikan seperti status teknologi masih desain konsep, SDM belum tersedia, dan belum mendapat sertifikasi dari lembaga yang berwenang.

Abstract:Sustainable closed fuel cycle and inherent safety are one of the key aspects of Generation IV reactor design. Hence Molten salt reactor (MSR) is chosen as one of the candidates of Generation IV reactor concepts. FUJI-U2 or MSR-2R is a 2-region core MSR design that was proposed as a possible simplification of FUJI-U3 (3-region core). Taking into consideration that uranium−233 doesn’t exist naturally, FUJI-U2 utilize both plutonium and uranium−233 as a fissile material. To understand the characteristics further, a comparative study of 2-region core MSR with Th-U233 and Th-Pu as fuel has been carried out. Nuclear analysis code SRAC2006 with the nuclear data library of JENDL4.0 was used, and CITATION was employed to validate the core. The design parameters set for each region are fuel composition, core radius, and fuel fraction. The simulation burn up calculation is set to 2000 days in total, with 21 step each for 100 days cycle. Neutron multiplication factor, fuel elemental, burn up calculation, conversion ratio, and neutron flux in each core will be discussed.

Abstract:Recently Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) gains more interest among nuclear researchers due to its promising competitiveness and safety features. ThorCon MSR (TMSR500) is this kind of reactor projected to be built in Indonesia. Due to a limited number of proven operating reactors and limited knowledge of reactor characteristics, several aspects have to be studied, such as neutronic features, material, fuel circulation, fuel management, etc. This paper reveals some important neutronic safety features of MSR, referring to ThorCon design, such as temperature reactivity feedback of fuel, moderator, and reflector. Void reactivity feedback and neutron energy spectrum behavior during voiding were also examined by performing MCNP6 calculations and nuclear data ENDF/B-VII. Full core geometry was modeled, and the drift effect was not taken into account. Neutron flux and power density distribution were also addressed. The purpose of this paper is to review the aforementioned important safety parameters by doing the Monte Carlo code calculations. The results indicated that the core induces negative reactivity feedback due to temperature increase in fuel and moderator, but positive for temperature increase in the reflector. The temperature reactivity coefficient of fuel, moderator, and reflector exhibited −5.82×10−3 (%dk/k)/°C, −9.68×10−4 (%dk/k)/°C, and +1.84×10−4 (%dk/k)/°C, respectively. The introduction of void in the core either as a result of boiling or pump cavitation would induce positive reactivity of +0.115 (%dk/k)/(%void). Overall, the temperature reactivity coefficients exhibited large negative, and there is a comfortable margin between the operating temperature to the boiling point that might prevent void generation due to fuel boiling.

Abstract:Some of the difficulties of maintenance of a tokamak system are due to the radioactivity of its materials and the complexity of its configuration. To mitigate these difficulties, very low activation SiC/SiC composite material and a torus configuration with a high aspect ratio of eight are introduced. The torus system is divided radially into equal sectors, each of which forms an assembling unit. All piping and feeder systems are shifted to the spacious central torus region. The new concept is called DREAM tokamak reactor, which is an acronym for DRastically EAsy Maintenance. The maximum toroidal field strength of 20 T and the plasma major and minor radii of 16 m and 2 m lead to a high fusion power of 5.5 GW, under moderate physics constraints such as an MHD safety factor of three, a Troyon factor of three for the beta limit and an energy confinement time enhancement factor of two.

Abstract:Molten Salt Reactors based on the thorium cycle were studied in the 1950 to 1960s to lead to the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor concept, which was finally discontinued prior to any industrial development. In the past few years, this concept has once again been studied in order to generalize it and seek configurations ensuring a high intrinsic safety level, an initial inventory compatible with intensive deployment on a worldwide scale, and a not-too-demanding salt chemical reprocessing scheme. The Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR) thus defined is studied in the Th-233U cycle in various configurations obtained by modulating the amount of graphite in core to obtain a thermal, an epithermal, or a fast spectrum. In particular, configurations of a fast spectrum TMSR have been identified with outstanding safety characteristics and minimal fuel-reprocessing requirements.

Abstract:The global energy demand is continuously rising, requiring the search for attractive and low-emission energy generation options. Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) have emerged as a promising solution in the Generation IV roadmap due to their inherent safety features and fuel flexibility. Operating at high temperatures, MSRs efficiently convert heat into electricity and offer potential applications beyond energy production. Nevertheless, challenges related to materials, fuel management, commercial viability, and regulatory acceptance persist. This study focuses on the Single-fluid Double-zone Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor (SD-TMSR), an advanced nuclear design utilizing 232Th as the primary fuel source. Four initial fissile materials were examined for fuel cycle flexibility: conventional recovery uranium (RU) with 233U, enriched uranium (EU) with 235U, reprocessed plutonium (RP), and reprocessed plutonium/minor actinides (RA) matrices. Using the MCNP6 code, a comprehensive model of the SD-TMSR core was developed to study the performance of proposed fuels during a reactor cycle. The analysis encompassed neutronic parameters, reactivity, neutron flux profile, and fuel evolution. The findings indicated EU, RP, and RA fuels as viable alternatives to RU, exhibiting efficient neutron capture scenarios and reduced nuclear waste production. The study verified the reliability of the developed model by comparing main neutronic parameters with literature data, confirming their statistical equivalence. The proposed fuels, EU, RP, and RA, exhibit subcritical characteristics compared to conventional RU fuel. To improve reactor reactivity, the mole percentage of uranium tetrafluoride (UF4) and (TRU)F3 was gradually increased while reducing thorium tetrafluoride (ThF4) proportion. The burnup analysis revealed the changes in isotopes’ concentration during the reactor cycle, and the breeding ratio (BR) indicated that SD-TMSR operates as a converter reactor in the first cycle. Actinides, especially thorium and protactinium, dominated the fuel's activity, while iodine activity was significant for all fuel types. The research provided valuable insights into the proposed fuels’ behavior, offering relevant data for the SD-TMSR's design and operation.

Abstract:Abstract Indonesia has a resource of nuclear fuel which spread around the country, especially in Bangka Belitung, West Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, and Papua. Therefore, Indonesia has a potential in the nuclear energy development. The Generation IV nuclear power system has been developed by the Generation IV Forum (GIF) with its benefits such as highly economical, enhanced safety, low waste production, and proliferation resistant. MSR is one of Generation IV nuclear power system which uses molten salt as a fuel and a coolant. Based on RUPTL (Electricity Supply Business Plan) PLN 2018-2027, Indonesia needs 100 MWe power harness from nuclear energy. This study focuses on a FUJI-U3 reactor, a type of MSR which developed in Japan. Power operation varied from 120-150 MWth 60-100 MWe and using FLiBe as molten salt. The calculation was performed with PIJ and CITATION modules in SRAC 2006 and JENDL 4.0 as nuclear data library.

Abstract:Molten salt reactor (MSR) shows great promise as a Generation IV nuclear reactor concept with high thermal-electric conversion efficiency, inherent safety features, and online reprocessing capability. During operation, the molten salt reactor MSR does not require a long refueling shutdown owing to online fuel reprocessing, making it suitable for watercraft propulsion. This paper presents the neutronic design of the 250 MWt iso-breeder MSR concept for submarine propulsion. The reactor is fueled with LiF-BeF2-ThF4-233UF4 salt with a virtual one-and-a-half fluid configuration. The MSR core is moderated with beryllium oxide and equipped with a high-density graphite reflector to improve neutronic. All calculations on the reactor core design were performed using MCNP6.2 code with ENDF/B-VII.0 neutron cross-section library. As a part of the neutronic analysis, the calculated parameters were the effective multiplication factor (), temperature coefficient of reactivity (TCR), and breeding ratio (BR). The value of ± 1.005 was obtained using Th : U ratio of 98.42% : 1.58%. The TCR value was obtained at -2.56 pcm/K, while the BR value was 1.057. These initial values indicate that the marine propulsion MSR can achieve iso-breeding with inherent safety characteristics. By using MSR design, it is hoped that the submarines will be able to reach significantly longer operational range than its Diesel-powered counterpart..

Abstract:Nuclear Power Plant can produce electricity more efficiently and have low carbon emissions. The nuclear reactor used in this study is the MSR (Molten Salt Reactor) FUJI-12. This study aims to conduct an analysis neutronics on MSR FUJI-12 by varying the geometry shape of the reactor core and finding the most effective geometry core to use in MSR. The material used in this study is a mixture of LiF-BeF2-UF4 molten salts. This study uses OpenMC code with nuclear data library ENDF/B VIII.1. The shapes of the geometry core that will be compared are, pancake, balance, and tall. The three geometry core shapes will then be varied into seven kinds. The results show that the geometry of the core is very influential on the reactivity of a nuclear reactor. The k_eff value for all geometry core variants at the beginning of the operating reactor is in a supercritical condition and it will be a critical or subcritical condition at the end of the reactor’s operating life. Balance and tall 1 variants have a high on distribution neutron flux and fission rate. The Balance variant also produces the smallest mass of plutonium nuclides. The neutronic analysis that has been carried out show that the balance variant is the optimal geometry core design that can be used on the MSR FUJI-12.

Abstract:A liquid fueled thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR-LF), one of the Generation IV reactors, was designed by the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This study uses the`rt code to calculate the neutron and gamma dose rate distributions around the reactor. Multiple types of tallies and variance reduction techniques were employed to reduce calculation time and obtain convergent calculation results. Based on the calculation and analysis results, the TMSR-LF1 radiation shield with a 60-cm serpentine concrete layer and a 120-cm ordinary concrete layer is able to meet radiation requirements. The gamma dose rate outside the reactor biological shield was 16.1 mSv h−1; this is higher than the neutron dose rate of 3.71 × 10–2 mSv h−1. The maximum thermal neutron flux density outside the reactor biological shield was 1.89 × 103 cm−2 s−1, which was below the 1 × 105 cm−2 s−1 limit.

Abstract:Molten Salt Reactors are one of six next generation designs chosen by the Gen IV program. Traditionally these reactors are thought of as ther mal breeder reactors running on the thorium to U cycle and the historical competitor to fast breed er reactors. However, simplified versions running as converter reactors without any fuel proc essing and consuming low enriched uranium are perhaps a more attractive option. Uranium cons umption levels are less than 1/6 th that of LWR or a 1/4 of CANDU while at the same time offering clear adv ntages in safety, capital cost and long lived waste production along with inc reased proliferation resistance. A review of previous work and potential improvements proposed b y the author will be presented.

Abstract:Energi Nuklir merupakan salah satu energi alternatif yang memiliki kelebihan pada jumlah energi yang dihasilkannya, bahan bakar yang digunakannya dan tidak menghasilkan pencemaran udara. Gas-Cooled fast Reactor merupakan reaktor cepat berpendingin helium yang termasuk dalam reaktor Generasi IV yang memiliki keunggulan dalam segi penggunaan bahan bakar dan keselamatan. Thorium merupakan salah satu bahan bakar nuklir yang bersifat fertile yang jumlahnya melimpah, yaitu empat kali lebih banyak dibandingkan dengan jumlah uranium. Perhitungan kekritisan desain reaktor cepat berbahan bakar thorium nitride (ThN) menggunakan seperangkat program SRAC yang menghasilkan kondisi kritis pada pengayaan uranium-233 sebesar 5% dengan nilai excess reactivity sebesar 0,044% pada fraksi volume 65% fuel, 10% cladding dan 25% coolant dan menghasilkan level burnup 1,93 x 105 MWd/ton. Bahan bakar thorium bisa digunakan sebagai bahan bakar nuklir untuk pembangkit listrik tenaga nuklir dengan waktu burnup 50 tahun.

Abstract:The power peaking factor (PPF) is an important parameter that needs to be considered to maintain the reactor's stability, safety and efficiency. The present study discusses the power density distribution in the reactor core by calculating the PPF to increase the reactor safety margin and minimize the possibility of a high power density at a certain point causing core failure in the Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), which is one of the Generation-IV reactors with fuel and coolant dissolved in molten salt. Important parameters discussed in the present study are the distribution of the reactor core region and the fuel composition in each region during the reactor operation time of 2,000 days. Analysis was performed for 3 different thermal power: 150, 450 and 1,000 MWth as a representative to determine the behavior of PPF at small to large power by taking the reference design of the FUJI U3 reactor developed by ITMSF (International Thorium Molten-Salt Forum) Japan. FliBe (Lithium and Beryllium Fluoride) is used as the coolant, and the fuel mixture is 233UF4-ThF4. The calculation was conducted using SRAC2006 with PIJ and CITATION modules that solve the neutron diffusion equation providing power distribution values and effective multiplication factors. As a result, the MSR with 4 core regions produces a more balanced power distribution, a better PPF value, and a good effective multiplication factor for 2,000 days of operation time compared to the reference design. HIGHLIGHTS The research emphasizes the analysis of thermal power levels of 150, 450, and 1000 MWth to understand the Power Peaking Factor (PPF) behavior at different power levels An even power distribution is accomplished by optimizing the number of core regions with different fuel fractions After optimization, the decrease in Power Peaking Factor (PPF) values indicates an improvement in maintaining reactor stability, safety, and efficiency GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Abstract:The accumulation of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is presently considered as a hindrance of the massive deployment of nuclear power plant, especially regarding the transuranic (TRU) elements. Eliminating TRU through transmutation is one of the most feasible alternative as a technical solution to solve the issue. This study explores the possibility of TRU transmutation using molten salt reactor (MSR) in a heterogeneous configuration, where a solid TRU is coated inside the fuel channel filled with liquid salt fuel. Such configuration is proposed to allow higher TRU loading into fluoride salt mixture without compromising the safety of the reactor. TRU coating was applied in consecutively outward radial fuel channel layers with coating thicknesses of 2.5 mm and 5 mm. Calculation was performed using MCNP6.2 radiation transport code and ENDF/B-VII.0 neutron cross section library. From the results, TRU coating with smaller thickness and positioned closer to the centre of the core exhibit higher transmutation efficiency due to exposure to higher neutron flux. Highest transmutation efficiency was achieved at 67.93% after 160 days of burnup. This shows a potential of achieving highly efficient TRU using heterogeneous configuration in MSR core.

Abstract:This paper describes the preliminary design of the steady state tokamak reactor (SSTR) blanket cooled by a mixture of helium gas and fine solid particles. Light yet highly heat resistant material, titanium aluminide (TiAl), is used as structural material. Thickness of tritium breeding blanket using lithiated ceramics and beryllium neutron multiplier is minimized and high-temperature and non-breeding shield blanket is installed to enhance blanket energy multiplication. It is found that TiAl is advantageous in radioactive waste management because the contact dose rate of TiAl first wall attenuates rapidly. The gas-particulate mixture coolant lowers the helium pressure to 5 MPa and reduces the volumetric flow rate when compared to a pure helium-cooled blanket. The net thermal efficiency larger than 40 % can be achieved with the outlet coolant temperature of 700-degrees-C.

Abstract:Abstract Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is one of the next-generation nuclear power systems known as Generation IV. In this paper, the FUJI-U3 MSR type is designed for neutronic analysis that natural uranium is used as a fuel. The standard reactor core model is adopted due to the flux flattening effect in the active core, as reported from previous research. FLiBe eutectic is used both as the coolant salt and moderator in the reactor core. The neutronic calculation is performed using the SRAC 2006 program: PIJ for pin cell calculation and Citation for core calculation. JENDL 4.0 is used as a nuclear data library that provides the cross-section data of the nuclides. The neutronic parameter results, such as the effective multiplication factor, conversion ratio, neutron spectrum, and power density, are obtained from the calculation. The reactor can achieve the criticality condition with a minimum loading Uranium Tetrafluoride (UF4) of 3.6%mol for 2000 effective full power days (EFPD). The results calculation provide some parameter survey for the research and the future development of MSR.

Abstract:In this paper, design studies for a 50 MWth Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) have been carried out for the eutectic point of the molten salt mixture. Neutronic calculations are performed with the 19.75% enriched uranium and 100% 7Li isotope contained. The MCNP6 nuclear code was used with the ENDF/B-VIII nuclear data library to determine geometry dimensions and criticality. The time-evolution of Pu and other heavy isotopes in the reactor are calculated with the interface code MCNPAS. Four models are investigated with different reactor vessel materials: Model 1: Ni alloy (NiCrW-Hastelloy steel), Model 2: Beryllium, Model 3: Graphite and Model 4: Silicon Carbide (SiC). For the respective models, time-dependent criticality calculations are performed with a startup criticality value of keff = 1.0262, 1.0298, 1.0404, and 1.0223. The 235U consumed for the corresponding models over the 10 years of reactor operation are 257.9 kg, 258.8 kg, 259.4 kg and 257.9 kg, respectively. At the same time, the 238U consumptions are 400.6 kg, 380.0 kg, 379.8 kg, and 400.9 kg, respectively. The amount of the higher quality new fuel (239Pu) produced for 10 years is calculated as 129.10 kg, 127.41 kg, 122.95 kg and 128.66 kg, for the respected models.

Abstract:He-Xe gas-cooled micro-molten salt reactor (HX-micro-MSR) is a novel reactor concept that integrates the technologies of molten salt reactor and closed Brayton cycle (CBC), which has a more compact structure compared with the other types of micro-MSRs. The reactor system probed in this paper has a thermal power of 2.5 MWth and consists of the core, fission gas collecting container, and CBC system. The He-Xe gas flows through the coolant channels in the core to transfer the nuclear heat to the CBC for electricity production. To withstand the large pressure difference between the He-Xe gas coolant (7 MPa) and molten salt (nearly atmospheric pressure), the sizes and wall thickness of coolant channels are analyzed and optimized to be 8 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively. In total, 1050 coolant channels are regularly arranged in the core to effectively remove the nuclear heat. The enrichment of U-235 in the fuel UF4 is determined to be 61% to meet the burnup goal of 5 years. To minimize the neutron leakage, the thickness of reflector is selected to be 23 cm. Six control drums with the diameter in 10.5 cm and neutron absorber layer thickness in 1 cm are symmetrically placed in the reflector to realize reactivity control under both normal and accident conditions. Radiation shield is designed and analyzed by varying the thickness of multiple shielding layers, and it is found that a combination of W layer in 14 cm and Mg(BH4)2 layer in 56 cm can satisfy the criterion of radiation dose (<1 mSv/h). The total weight of HX-micro-MSR is estimated to be 35 tonnes and falls into the acceptable range.

Self-sustaining Core Design for 200 MWe Molten-Salt Reactor with Thorium-Uranium Fuel :FUJI-U3-(0)

Abstract:In this paper, an improved design for a small Molten-Salt Reactor (MSR) by using neutron flux flattening is proposed, which is referred as FUJI-U3-(0). This reactor is a 200 MWe power reactor, and its core contains graphite as the moderator and fuel salt. The fuel salt is composed of ThF4 as the fertile material, 233 UF4 as the fissile material, and LiF-BeF2, working as both fuel and heat transfer medium. A basic improvement in FUJI-U3-(0) is the optimization of the three-region core design in order to avoid the replacement of graphite, which is achieved by reducing the maximum neutron flux and minimizing the radiation damage of the graphite. Based on the above concept, 2 million cases were investigated using the nuclear analysis code SRAC95, and the final case was proposed as the optimized three-region core. For the burnup calculation, the burn-up analysis code ORIGEN2 was also used, It is concluded that there is no need to replace the graphite for 30 years with a load factor of 75%. The conversion ratio (CR) varies with burn-up of fuel, but the lifetime average CR is 1.01. The initial fissile inventory is 1.1 t and the feed for 30 years is 0.4 t, and the residual is 1.5 t. This means that this design is essentially a self-sustaining core. It is also shown that FUJI-U3-(0) produces very small amount of plutonium and Minor Actinides owing to the thorium-uranium fuel cycle application.
