Abstract:Bioplastic materials are sustainable alternatives for petroleum-based materials, yet there are limited means to fabricate bioplastics with arbitrary 3D shapes and requisite physical properties for mechanical performance. This work demonstrates a method to allow for mechanical performance and sustainable end-of-use degradation of the material by incorporating genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae that were programmed with inducible genes that were switched on in the presence of copper ions or galactose to either stiffen or degrade the materials.
