Abstract:Context: Industrial production and humans cannot exist without energy, but the low efficiency of the heat transfer in the excessive use of energy is the most significant aspect of energy saving and emission reduction. Molecular dynamics simulation methods are devoted to simulate the heat transfer efficiency of a nanofluid system with different particle sizes, and the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of the nanofluid is simulated and studied from a microscopic perspective. The analysis showed that as nanoparticle size increases, the thermal conductivity of the Al-Ar nanofluid tends to decrease, but all of them are still higher than the thermal conductivity of the liquid argon system. According to the findings of the density and radial distribution function analyses, it can be seen that the microstructure of the system changes after putting solid nanoparticles to the original fluid. This alteration in the system's microstructure is the primary component responsible for the increased heat transfer efficiency of nanofluids. Methods: In this paper, based on the theory of molecular dynamics, the simulation calculations were mainly performed using LAMMPS software, which is a commonly used open source computational program in the field of MD simulation research. VMD is used for visualization and analysis. The Lennard-Jones potential function was used in the simulation to accurately describe the forces acting between the atoms.
Simultaneous thermoosmotic and thermoelectric responses in nanoconfined electrolyte solutions: Effects of nanopore structures and membrane properties

Abstract:Hypothesis: Nanofluidic systems provide an emerging and efficient platform for thermoelectric conversion and fluid pumping with low-grade heat energy. As a basis of their performance enhancement, the effects of the structures and properties of the nanofluidic systems on the thermoelectric response (TER) and the thermoosmotic response (TOR) are yet to be explored. Methods: The simultaneous TER and TOR of electrolyte solutions in nanofluidic membrane pores on which an axial temperature gradient is exerted are investigated numerically and semi-analytically. A semi-analytical model is developed with the consideration of finite membrane thermal conductivity and the reservoir/entrance effect. Findings: The increase in the access resistance due to the nanopore-reservoir interfaces accounts for the decrease of short circuit current at the low concentration regime. The decrease in the thermal conductivity ratio can enhance the TER and TOR. The maximum power density occurring at the nanopore radius twice the Debye length ranges from several to dozens of mW K$^{-2}$ m$^{-2}$ and is an order of magnitude higher than typical thermo-supercapacitors. The surface charge polarity can heavily affect the sign and magnitude of the short-circuit current, the Seebeck coefficient, and the open-circuit thermoosmotic coefficient, but has less effect on the short-circuit thermoosmotic coefficient. Furthermore, the membrane thickness makes different impacts on TER and TOR for zero and finite membrane thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Liquid confined in a nanochannel or nanotube has exhibited a superfast transport phenomenon, providing an ideal heat and mass transfer platform to meet the increasingly stringent challenge of thermal management in developing high-power-density nanoelectronics and nanochips. However, understanding the thermal transport of confined liquid is currently lacking and is speculated to be fundamentally different from that of bulk counterparts due to the unprecedented thermodynamics of liquid in nanoconfined environments. Here, we report that the thermal conductivity of water confined in a silica nanotube is nearly 2-fold as that of bulk status. Further molecular dynamics simulations reveal that this unusual enhancement originates from the densification and reorientation of local hydrogen bonds close to the nanotubes. Thermal-confinement scaling law is established and quantitatively supported by comprehensive simulations with remarkable agreement. Our findings lay a theoretical foundation for designing nanofluidics-enabled cooling strategies and devices.

Abstract:In order to support the sustainable development goals, a new single atom fluid is developed where single atom coexistent in solvents mixture. The single atom fluid of Ni/PANI/PyBIG outstandings thermoelectric properties. This fluid simultaneously shows high activity and fluidity due to the intensification effect of single atom. The temperature, pressure and weight fraction of Ni are observed to significantly influence the thermoelectric effect and activity by experiment and DFT simulation. It is found that the Seebeck coefficient and potential are almost increased by 100% as the temperature difference increases from 40 K to 70 K. An increase of weight fraction from 0.1% to 0.4% improves the Seebeck coefficient and the potential by 49.92% and 1.66 times, respectively. An interesting slag phenomenon is also identified. Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:Thermosyphons have high effective thermal conductivity and are applicable for different heat transfer purposes including cooling devices and heat exchangers. In the present study, thermal performance of a thermosyphon is experimentally investigated by using Ni/Glycerol–water nanofluid in three concentrations including 0.416, 0.625 and 1.25 g/lit. Experimental results revealed that using the nanofluid with 0.625 g/lit concentration leads to lowest thermal resistances. Afterwards, a thermosyphon-based heat exchanger is designed and numerically investigated to compare its performance with copper heat exchanger. Since the effective thermal conductivity of thermosyphon depends on temperature difference between condenser and evaporator, a novel approach is applied to achieve precise modeling. Effects of mass flow rates of cold and streams and inlet temperature of hot stream on heat transfer rate are evaluated. Results revealed that using thermosyphon instead of copper tubes with the same dimensions results in more than 100% improvement in heat transfer capacity. Moreover, it is concluded that increase in the mass flow rates of the streams and inlet temperature of hot stream lead to increase in heat transfer rate. A 3D graph is represented to evaluate the influences of hot stream temperature and mass flow rate on the heat transfer rate of thermosyphon-based heat exchanger.

Abstract:A systematic theoretical study of thermoelectric effect and temperature-gradient-driven electrokinetic flow of electrolyte solutions in charged nanocapillaries is presented. The study is based on a semianalytical model developed by simultaneously solving the non-isothermal Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes equations with the lubrication theory. Particularly, this paper clarifies the interplay and relative importance of the thermoelectric mechanisms due to (a) the convective transport of ions caused by the fluid flow, (b) the dependence of ion electrophoretic mobility on temperature, (c) the difference in the intrinsic Soret coefficients of cation and anion. Additionally, synergy conditions for the three thermoelectric mechanisms to fully cooperate are proposed for thermo-phobic/philic electrolytes. The temperature-gradient-driven electrokinetic flow is shown to be a nearly unidirectional flow whose axial velocity profiles vary with the axial location. Also, the flow can be regarded as a consequence of the counteraction or cooperation between a thermoelectric-field-driven electroosmotic flow and a thermo-osmotic flow driven by the osmotic pressure gradient and dielectric body force. Moreover, the Seebeck coefficient and the fluid average velocity are demonstrated to be affected by electrolyte-related parameters. The results are beneficial for understanding the temperature-gradient-driven electrokinetic transport in nanocapillaries and also serve as theoretical foundation for the design of low-grade waste heat recovery devices and thermoosmotic pumps.

A Comprehensive Model for the Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of Nanofluids

Abstract:Various mechanisms and correlations concerning the enhanced thermal conductivity of nanofluids have been developed. In this work, a comprehensive model to predict large enhancement of thermal conductivity of nanofluids by considering the graded nanolayer, the mutual interaction of spherical nanoparticles and the Brownian motion is proposed. The model investigates the relationship between the enhanced thermal conductivity and nanoparticle size, nanolayer thickness, the interaction of adjacent nanoparticles, volume fraction and temperature. Furthermore, the theoretical results on the effective thermal conductivity of nanofluids are in good agreement with that of experimental data.

Abstract:Advancements in chip technology increase energy consumption due to larger chip capacity, leading to intensive heat flux generation. Cooling solutions, including fan-only, fan-conventional heat sink (HS), or fan-conventional HS-heat pipe (HP) integrated systems, face penalties such as noise, dust accumulation, high electricity usage, space constraints, and thermal limitations of the working fluid. While thermoelectric coolers (TEC) have advantages like compactness and noise-free operation, they alone are insufficient for cooling sophisticated chips; combining them with microchannel heat sinks (MCHS) and superior fluid is crucial for achieving faster and more efficient cooling. Considering previous studies involving TECs used alone, with conventional fluids integrated into MCHS, and with a mono-nanofluid integrated into MCHSs, this is the first study to consider a TEC integrated with two MCHSs and to use a ZnO-TiO 2 /water hybrid nanofluid to maximize the performance of this miniature refrigeration system. Accordingly, an experimental study was carried out on the aforementioned refrigeration system using various concentrations (φ) of ZnO-TiO 2 /water hybrid nanofluid for different flow rates, utilizing both conventional heat transfer and the TEC's mathematical operating principle. The results were interpreted via Reynolds number, Prandtl number, heat transfer rate, Nusselt number, total thermal resistance, and coefficient of performance (COP). The increase in φ from 0% to 0.03%, accompanied by a decrease in flow rate from 16 × 10 −5 m 3 /s to 9 × 10 −5 m 3 /s, increased the heat transfer rate for the heat-absorbing and the heat-emitting sides of the refrigeration system from 19.510 W to 45.794 W, and 13.639 W to 22.406 W, respectively. The experimental COP for pure water was 0.325 at the lowest volume flow rate, but increased to 0.934 at a φ of 0.030%. Considering the thermal characteristics, this study demonstrates that the proposed system is particularly advantageous at low flow rates and high φ, making it a potential candidate for electronic circuit cooling. Considerations such as investigating certain material properties to allow for further improvement of the proposed system were offered.

Abstract:Conventional heat carrier liquids have demonstrated remarkable enhancement in heat and mass transfer when nanoparticles were suspended in them. These liquid-nanoparticle suspensions are now known as Nanofluids. However the relationship between nanoparticles and the degree of enhancement is still unclear, thus hindering the large scale manufacturing of them. Understanding of the energy and flow behaviour of nanofluids is therefore of wide interest in both academic and industrial context. In this paper we first model the heat transfer of a nanofluid in convection in a circular tube at macro-scale by using CFD code of OpenFoam. Then we zoon into nano-scale behaviour using the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. In the latter we considered a system of water and Gold nanoparticles. A systematic increase of convective heat transfer was observed with increasing nanoparticle concentration. A maximum enhancement of 7.0% was achieved in comparison to base fluid water. This occurred when the gold volume fraction was 0.015. Subsequent MD simulations confirmed a dense water layer formed 2nm away from the gold nanoparticle boundary. It is speculated that the observed increase in thermal conductivity was principly caused by this dense water layer formed around each nanoparticle.

Abstract:We propose here a feasible and effective design of new thermoelectric systems based on physical gaps in nanoscale junctions. We show that, depending on the type of features, i.e. the character of surface/edge states, on both sides of the gap, it is possible to achieve rather high figures of merit. In particular, we show that for configurations that have localized states at the surfaces/edges, which translate into sharp resonances in the transmission, it is possible to achieve large Seebeck coefficients and figures of merit by carefully tuning their energy and their coupling to other states. We calculate the thermoelectric coefficients as a function of different parameters and find non-obvious behaviours, like the existence of a certain coupling between the localized and bulk states for which these quantities have a maximum. The highest Seebeck coefficients and figures of merit are achieved for symmetric junctions, which have the same coupling between the localized state and the bulk states on both sides of the gap. The features and trends of the thermoelectric properties and their change with various parameters that we find here cannot only be applied to systems with nanogaps, but also to many other nanoscale junctions, such as e.g. those that have surface states or states localized near the contacts between the nanoscale object and the electrodes. The model presented here can therefore be used to characterize and predict the thermoelectric properties of many different nanoscale junctions and can also serve as a guide for studying other systems. These results pave then the way for the design and fabrication of stable next-generation thermoelectric devices with robust features and improved performances.

Abstract:A solid-liquid local thermal non-equilibrium lattice Boltzmann model for hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a nanofluid is developed in this paper. In this proposed model, interactions between fluid and solid nanoparticles, random motion of nanoparticles as well as heat transfer between nanoparticles and the base fluid are taken into consideration. This novel model is applied to two simple nanofluids problems: isothermal shear flow between two parallel plates moving at different velocities, and heat conduction between two parallel plates at different temperatures. For the problem of shear flow, it is found that nanoparticles random motion causes the instantaneous velocity distribution of a nanofluid to become non-linear in the shear flow between two parallel plates at microscopic level. At macroscopic level, it is found that as nanoparticles volume fraction increases, effects of nanoparticles random motion are enlarged and the time-average velocity distribution of a nanofluid deviates more from a linear distribution in a shear flow. For the problem of heat conduction between parallel plates at different temperatures, it is found that random motion of nanoparticles together with their high thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, causing the instantaneous temperature distribution in the nanofluid to become non-linear between two parallel plates at different temperatures. Temperature inside a nanoparticle is shown to be non-uniform, and temperature gradients in the fluid near a nanoparticles are elevated, thus heat transfer rate is enhanced near a nanoparticle. Time-average temperature gradients of a nanofluid at hot/cooled wall are higher than those of a pure fluid in heat conduction between parallel plates at different temperatures. Comparisons of calculated dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity based on this novel model are found in good agreement with existing correlation equations. Thus, the accuracy of this novel solidliquid local thermal non-equilibrium model for a nanofluid is validated. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
High-Performance Thermogalvanic Cell Based on Organic Nanofluids

Abstract:The thermoelectric performance of traditional thermogalvanic cells is relatively low and a more efficient conversion mechanism is required. In this paper, the distribution of glycerol/glycerin in an aqueous sodium chloride solution in a carbon nanotube (CNT) is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The distributions of ions, molecule net charge, and electrical potential of the system are markedly affected by temperature. We propose a novel nanofluid thermoelectric conversion method based on the CNT and glycerol/glycerin aqueous sodium chloride solution. The thermoelectric performance of the proposed system is much higher than that of most of current liquid thermogalvanic cells, and the application temperature range is also widened considerably. A preliminary thermal-to-electrical energy conversion experiment based on nanoporous carbon with mixtures of sodium chloride and glycerol is also conducted to qualitatively verify the numerical results.

Abstract:In the current research, a three-dimensional photovoltaic thermal system integrated with phase change material system with nanofluids is investigated. The working fluids involved in this study include nano-magnesium oxide, multiwall carbon nano tube and hybrid (mixture of nano-magnesium oxide and nano-multiwall carbon nano tube) nanofluids dispersed in pure water. After comparing single-phase model and mixture model, the mixture model is used in the study and fluid flow regime in the collector is assumed to be laminar, fully develop, uniform and incompressible, to model the nanofluid in the system. A parametric analysis is conducted to examine the effect of various parameters such as working fluid type, mass fraction of nanofluid and phase change layer thickness on thermal and electrical performance of system. Moreover, the temperature distribution of phase change in the system for different sections is investigated. According to the results, the surface temperature of the system with multiwall carbon nanofluid only reduces by 0.3 degrees C, with an increase in a mass fraction from 3% to 6%. Moreover, multiwall carbon nanofluid has the highest overall energy efficiency, and magnesium oxide nanofluid has the lowest overall energy efficiency. For the mass fraction of 6% wt, the overall energy efficiency of system with working fluids of water, magnesium oxide nanofluid, multiwall carbon nanofluid, and hybrid nanofluid is 55.24%, 60.08%, 61.07%, and 60.66%, respectively. In addition, it is observed that by increasing phase change layer thickness, both outflow and surface temperature of the system reduce.

Abstract:Thermoelectric devices are heat engines, which operate as generators or refrigerators using the conduction electrons as a working fluid. The thermoelectric heat-to-work conversion efficiency has always been typically quite low, but much effort continues to be devoted to the design of new materials boasting improved transport properties that would make them of the electron crystal-phonon glass type of systems. On the other hand, there are comparatively few studies where a proper thermodynamic treatment of the electronic working fluid is proposed. The present article aims to contribute to bridge this gap by addressing both the thermodynamic and transport properties of the thermoelectric working fluid covering a variety of models, including interacting systems.

Giant Thermoelectric Response of Confined Electrolytes with Thermally Activated Charge Carrier Generation

Abstract:The thermoelectric response of thermally activated electrolytes (TAEs) in a slit channel is studied theoretically and by numerical simulations. The term TAE refers to electrolytes whose charge carrier concentration is a function of temperature, as recently suggested for ionic liquids and highly concentrated aqueous electrolyte solutions. Two competing mechanisms driving charge transport by temperature gradients are identified. Abstract:One of the comprehensive ways of heat transport performance augmentation of thermo-fluid systems is to use nanofluid over base fluid. This study mainly scrutinizes several existing models of thermal conduction coefficient and absolute viscosity of Al2O3-water nanofluid with the experimental data. A benchmark problem of natural convective flow is selected to test the performance of the available nanofluid models. The Rayleigh number varies between 103 and 109, while the solid-volume proportion (φ) changes from 0 to 4%. The governing mathematical model is numerically discretized via the Galerkin finite element procedure under appropriate auxiliary conditions. The results produced by the models are verified with the existing experimental findings based on the evaluation of the Prandtl number and average Nusselt number. It has been confirmed that the AH model (Azmi's viscosity and Ho's conductivity models) is suitable for lower nanoparticle concentration (φ = 0.01), the AM model (Azmi's viscosity and Maxwell's conductivity models) for moderate concentration (0.01 < φ < 0.04), and the NH model (Ngueyn's viscosity and Ho's conductivity models) for higher value of the solid-volume proportion (φ = 0.04).

Abstract:In a system containing nanoporous materials and liquids, the well-known thermo-capillary effect can be amplified by the ultralarge specific surface area of the nanopores. With appropriate temperature change, the relative wetting-dewetting transition can cause the liquid to flow in or out of the nanopores, and part of the thermal energy is converted to significant mechanical output. A conceptual design of such a thermal actuation/energy conversion/storage system is investigated in this paper, whose working mechanism, i.e. the thermally dependent infiltration behaviors of liquids into nanopores, is analyzed using molecular dynamics simulations. The fundamental molecular characteristics, including the density profile, contact angle, and surface tension of the confined liquid molecules, are examined in considerable detail. The influences of pore size, solid phase and liquid species are elucidated, which couple with the thermal effect. The energy density, power density, and efficiency of the thermal actuation system are evaluated. An infiltration experiment on a zeolite/water system is performed to qualitatively validate these findings.

Abstract:The thermal management of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems is closely related to maintaining optimal system performance and reliability. Heat dissipation through the phase transition of the working medium has emerged as an effective approach to these problems. In this study, the phase transition of liquid nanofilms over copper surfaces with various heat fluxes, nanoroughness, and wetting conditions is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the phase transition mode of the water nanofilm is normal evaporation at low heat flux and explosive boiling at high heat flux. Two different nanorough surfaces with the same surface area have almost an identical effect on the water nanofilm phase transition. Explosive boiling occurs earlier on hydrophobic surfaces, which is consistent to the macroscopic phenomenon. The heat flux at which explosive boiling occurs on nanorough surface increases for hydrophobic and neutral surfaces compared with smooth surfaces and remains constant for hydrophilic surfaces. The onset of explosive boiling on nanorough surfaces is later than that on smooth surfaces. These findings on the mechanism of heat and mass transfer at the micro- and nanoscale are conducive to efficient utilization and energy conservation.

Abstract:<p>In this study, a nanofluid-based photovoltaic thermal system integrated with nano-enhanced phase change material is numerically simulated using a transient three-dimensional model. Aluminum oxide nanoparticles are dispersed into both the heat transfer fluid, which is water, and the Rubitherm series of organic phase change material. Response surface methodology is applied to gain a predictive model for estimating the behavior of the system in terms of four different design parameters of phase change material layer thickness, heat transfer fluid mass flow rate, and the mass fraction of nanoparticles through the phase change material and working fluid. The relationships between the mentioned parameters and responses, including electrical and thermal power, exergy, and entropy generation along with their interaction impacts on system performance are obtained. Finally, employing single and multi-objective optimization, different scenarios are defined to optimize the system based on the designer's goals. The results reveal that the dispersion of nanoparticles within the heat transfer fluid leads to a better improvement in photovoltaic thermal system performance compared to its addition to the phase change material. Based on the multi-objective optimization method to maximize electrical and thermal exergies, simultaneously, results show the best electrical and thermal exergies of the system can be achieved to 135.92 and 2.44 W/m<sup>2</sup>, respectively.</p>
