Abstract:With the fast development of the aviation transportation, the emission (NOx, CO, UHC, CO2, smoke particle and contrails) of the civil aeroengine using the hydrocarbon fuel has damaged the environment tremendously. Especially, the NOx and CO2 have a big contribution to the global warming. In order to greatly reduce the damage of the civil aeroengine to the environment, ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research in Europe) has published the 2020 annual target, i.e., the 80 percents reduction of NOx, 50 percents reduction of CO2 per passenger per kilometer, and 20 db reduction of the noise. In order to achieve the ACARE 2020 annual target, one key technology is low emission combustion technology.

Abstract:This editorial discusses the importance of Advanced Fluid Machinery in the sustainable development of energy. Fluid machinery is crucial in many engineering applications, including aerospace, civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering. This Special Issue, entitled "Optimization and Flow Characteristics in Advanced Fluid Machinery", features several research articles exploring flow characteristics and optimization in fluid mechanics. The authors present innovative ideas, methodologies, and techniques to advance the field of fluid mechanics. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), turbulence modeling, heat transfer, multiphase flow, and fluid–structure interactions. The articles featured in this Special Issue also investigate the relevant hydrodynamic attributes of turbomachinery, high-pressure jets, marine propulsion systems, and internal combustion engines to a considerable extent, significantly expanding the scope of research within the Special Issue.

Abstract:Rotary-wing vehicles, in particular smaller, lighter unmanned and urban air vehicles in urban and shipboard settings, will operate in low-speed flight conditions that are dominated by strong transient aerodynamics. Understanding the physics of these transient aerodynamics, specifically large amplitude transverse gusts and the resulting vehicle response, is crucial to the successful development and certification of safe air vehicles that operate in these environments. A high-fidelity computational study, including validation with experiments, explores sharp-edged or step transverse gusts where the gust velocity induces nonlinear behavior caused by flow separation. The behavior of the maximum lift and leading edge vortex behavior with the gust ratio is presented. Gust responses are observed to depart from Küssner’s theory when the leading edge vortex first forms as a distinct feature and breaks away from the wing, resulting in flow nonlinearities. Traditional linear indicial admittance techniques are shown to no longer be valid to predict gust responses when the gust velocity approaches the vehicle flight speed.

Abstract:Specific gust response is considered as one of the most important loads encountered by an aircraft. The Certification Specification (CS) 25, defined by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) 25, defined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), describe the critical gusts that an aircraft must withstand. They must be analyzed for a large range of flight points (Altitude and Equivalent Air speed) and mass configurations. For some load cases, the standard tools could not be accurate enough to correctly predict the gust response and the use of high-fidelity computation could be required. Therefore, ONERA has implemented in its in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code elsA (ONERA-Airbus-Safran property) the capability to compute the high-fidelity aeroelastic gust response, directly in the time-domain, for different discrete gust <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://shapes.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> paper presents some recent work achieved at ONERA concerning high-fidelity simulations for gust response. First, a physical validation of the gust response simulation is performed by comparing the results to those obtained experimentally on a scaled model. Second, numerical comparisons are performed using various techniques, in order to model the gust. Finally, an application for generic regional aircraft is shown.

Abstract:The exchange of momentum across the air-sea interface is a key driver of the earth system and its accurate parameterization is essential for precise weather and climate forecasting. However, our understanding of gustiness as an independent factor that can contribute to the momentum flux is limited. Using data collected from the R/P FLIP , as part of the Couple Air-Sea Processes and Electromagnetic ducting Research (CASPER) experiment, we explored the mechanisms by which gustiness contributes to the total interfacial momentum flux. We investigate how gustiness affects both the temporal and spatial (vertical) variance of turbulence in the atmospheric surface layer and show that high gustiness was associated with strong anisotropic turbulence at each measurement height. This was found to increase vertical wind fluctuations and inject additional momentum across the air-sea interface at lower wind speeds. Increased gustiness was also associated with the breakdown of the constant flux layer, which is generally assumed to exist over the ocean. This study has implications for both momentum flux parameterization and the use of similarity theory to model the flux-gradient relationship in the gusty atmospheric surface layer, thereby influencing the forecasting of climate and weather.

Abstract:Supersonic and hypersonic flows have gained considerable attention in the aerospace industry in recent years. Flow control is crucial for refining the quality of these high-speed flows and improving the performance and safety of fast aircraft. This paper discusses the distinctive characteristics of supersonic flows compared to low-speed flows, including phenomena such as boundary layer transition, shock waves, and sonic boom. These traits give rise to significant challenges related to drag, noise, and heat. Therefore, a review of several active and passive control strategies is provided, highlighting their significant advancements in flow transitions, reducing drag, minimizing noise, and managing heat. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive analysis of various research methodologies used in the application of flow control engineering, including wind tunnel testing, flight testing, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This work gives an overview of the present state of flow control research and offers insights into potential future advancements.

Abstract:This article researches on the relevant technologies of the three-ultra globe valves used in special testing devices in the aerospace field.It conducted basic theoretical research,including research on the high-temperature creep performance of materials,research on the mechanism and control meth-ods of supersonic vibration noise,fluid dynamics research,and numerical analysis of physical quantity coupling of main components.It introduces the technology of product structure design,which is the key to the success of product research and development.Its core technology is mainly reflected in the selec-tion and treatment process of internal components(valve seat,valve core,valve stem)and insulation sleeve,especially tantalum tungsten alloy,tantalum niobium alloy,or tungsten copper alloy with a tem-perature resistance of 2000℃,should be vacuum plated with iridium before assembly to prevent high-temperature oxidation.Design of both valve body insulation structure and design of cooling structure for valve seat and disc.The design and selection of the actuator have included a special structure of high and low pressure dual cylinder dual discharge for ultra-high pressure valves.The design of the damp-ing buffer mechanism includes three damping structures:hydraulic,spring,and throttle cone,which have achieved excellent performance in practical working conditions.
Environmental hazard assessment of forest fire sites to firefighting aircraft-part I: Canyon wind and temperature distribution

Abstract:Wildfires have caused immense damage to the environment, property and human safety in recent years. Fortunately, the deployment of firefighting aircraft, particularly water bombers, has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for combating wildfires. However, the intricate environment of forest fire sites, characterized by thermal turbulence and canyon winds, presents a formidable flight risk for firefighting aircraft. To address this issue, this study conducted a comprehensive risk assessment of firefighting aircraft operating in a wildfire environment, analyzing the impact of thermal turbulence and canyon winds using a finite element simulation method. This approach not only bridges the research gap in the field of flight safety but also evaluates the environmental risks encountered by firefighting aircraft when entering forest fire sites. Our findings underscore thermal turbulence and canyon winds as potential hazards for aircraft flying over mountainous terrain, elucidating the effect of thermal turbulence on aircraft engine intakes and quantifying the total lift loss incurred during encounters with canyon winds featuring non-uniform airflow velocities. Specifically, thermal turbulence can induce instability and vibration in aircraft engines, whereas canyon winds can generate updrafts and downdrafts that may compromise aircraft structures or lead to lift loss. Furthermore, we cite several references to emphasize the multifaceted risks associated with the forest fire site environment, encompassing temperature gradients, thunderstorms, and air pollution. Such comprehensive wildfire data can be invaluable in assessing the flight safety of firefighting aircraft during water-dropping missions in forest fire scenarios.

Abstract:Gust is a common atmospheric turbulence phenomenon encountered by aircraft and is one major cause of several undesired instability problems. Although the response of aircraft to the incoming gust has been widely investigated within the subject of external-flow aerodynamics in the past decades, little attention is paid to its effects on the internal flow within aircraft engines. In this paper, a newly implemented Field Velocity Method (FVM) in OpenFOAM is used to simulate the flow field and aerodynamic responses of a serpentine inlet exposed to non-stationary horizontal sinusoidal gusts. Validations are performed on the results obtained based on the baseline Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver and the gust modeling method. Finally, the flow field and aerodynamic characteristics of the serpentine inlet under horizontal sinusoidal gust conditions are comprehensively investigated. It is found that the gusts not only significantly change the flow structure but also play an unfavorable role in the total pressure distortion of the serpentine inlet. This finding shows the necessity to consider gust effects when designing and evaluating the performance of aircraft engines.

Abstract:The service environment for combined power aerospace vehicles is extremely harsh, resulting in a series of mechanical problems that need to be solved. Technical characteristics of combined powered aerospace vehicles and the basic concepts of related extreme mechanics are introduced, and the research status of extreme mechanics of aerospace vehicles is compared. Key mechanical problems of combined power aerospace vehicles in the extreme service environment are sorted out, including wide speed range adjustable integrated intake and exhaust and mode conversion unsteady load action mechanism, prediction of high Mach cavity flow dynamics environment under complex interference conditions, prediction of thermal response of multi-scale structures with long flight time and thermal management, high-temperature acoustic-vibration coupling mechanism and vibration fatigue of composite materials, large-scale rudder surface nonlinear thermal flutter mechanism, multi-parameter refined simulation ground test design of force thermoacoustic in extreme mechanical environment, etc., providing references for the development of related research work.

Abstract:Air-breathing vehicles, a crucial field of the aerospace industry in recent years, are required to have exceptional flight performance in a wide range. As a practical and essential way to realize efficient flight, the integration design emerges as a prominent characteristic of air-breathing vehicles. This article reviews and analyzes the design connotation, critical progress, and technical attributes of high-speed air-breathing integration vehicles, including supersonic aerodynamics/propulsion integration, hypersonic cruise-type airframe/engine integration, and wide-range aircraft/engine integration. In the supersonic aerodynamics/propulsion integrated design phase, creating a vehicle with excellent maneuverability and stealth performance has become the design focus. While in the hypersonic cruise-type airframe/engine integrated design phase, designers proposed various rotational symmetrical slender body and lifting-body configurations to match the scramjet engines. This provided strong support for breaking through thrust-drag matching in hypersonic cruise. For wide-range aircraft/engine integration vehicles, a more complex service environment imposes higher requirements on their levels of integration. The progression from supersonic aerodynamics/propulsion integration to hypersonic cruise-type airframe/engine integration, and further to wide-range aircraft/engine integration, signifies the exploration of air-breathing aircraft towards wider speed range and broader airspace. Finally, a detailed analysis of the distinctions among these three types of integrated vehicles is presented, and the development proposals and trends of wide-range aircraft/engine integration vehicles are discussed.

Abstract:The spanwise morphing wing can change its aerodynamic shape to suit its flight environment, thereby having the potential to improve the flight performance of the aircraft, especially in gusty conditions. To investigate the potential of morphing wings, the aerodynamic performance of a spanwise morphing wing with a flapping wingtip in a gust environment was analyzed in this paper. The aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing wing are hard to measure accurately, and thus a wind tunnel test was carried out to study the influences of morphing parameters, such as the morphing length, amplitude and frequency on the gust alleviation effect. The flow mechanism of the designed spanwise morphing wing was analyzed in detail by the instantaneous lift results of the wind tunnel test and the flow field results of the CFD method. The results have shown that with appropriate morphing parameters, the spanwise morphing wing designed in this paper can effectively achieve gust alleviation during flight. The conclusions obtained in this paper can be useful guidance for the design of morphing aircraft.

Abstract:This paper introduces three new gust load alleviation control strategies, which are based on variable camber technology, to achieve the design requirements for the safety, economy, and comfort of modern civil aircraft. These strategies involve adjusting the inner and outer flap differential of wings, spoilers, and ailerons to alter the aerodynamic shape of the aircraft structure, resulting in drag reduction and gust load alleviation during stepped cruise flights. Furthermore, a logic design is provided for both the cruise drag reduction function and the gust load alleviation function. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed gust load alleviation control strategies, simulation results are presented, utilizing ride quality and wing root bending moment changes as the evaluation criteria. The presented approaches ultimately lead to the development of an optimal scheme that meets the desired design requirements.

Abstract:International Journal of Aeroacoustics, Ahead of Print. Rocket sled test avoids boundary effects in wind tunnel test and inconvenience of flight test, which is one of the feasible options for future single-stage-to-orbit. To analyze potential safety issues during payload separation and optimize the arrangement of testing sensors, different structural layouts and operating speeds of the rocket sled are conducted based on computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustics. The hypersonic winged standard model is utilized as the load for these simulations. The analysis encompasses the evolution of shock waves, the forces exerted on the payload and noise propagation. Variations in flow field and aeroacoustic characteristics of rocket sled are analysed, revealing underlying physical mechanisms. It is observed that placing the payload in front of the thruster can reduce the head pressure, excessive wingspan may have an impact on the structural safety of the wingtip, and the regions of high sound pressure levels mainly exists in the middle and rear sections of the rocket sled. Moreover, as the Mach number increases, the characteristic frequency initially rises and then declines. These researches can serve as a valuable reference for the development of ground test systems and single-stage-to-orbit.

Abstract:Hypersonic vehicles must withstand extreme conditions during flights that exceed five times the speed of sound. These systems have the potential to facilitate rapid access to space, bolster defense capabilities, and create a new paradigm for transcontinental earth-to-earth travel. However, extreme aerothermal environments create significant challenges for vehicle materials and structures. This work addresses the critical need to develop resilient refractory alloys, composites, and ceramics. We will highlight key design principles for critical vehicle areas such as primary structures, thermal protection, and propulsion systems; the role of theory and computation; and strategies for advancing laboratory-scale materials to flight-ready components.

Abstract:Aeroelastic response of gust is always an important problem in flight quality assessment. In this study, structure and aerodynamic solvers based on Lagrange equation and Euler equation are coupled with loose coupling method. Elastic general-purpose airplane and a high-aspect-ratio transport airplane with elastic wings are simulated. The simulations proved the capacity of the method and studied the dynamic response in gust with different conditions.
