Abstract:In this work we provide a model-independent notion of local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories which generalises the well-known theory of locally coCartesian fibrations of $(\infty,1)$-categories. Based on previous work, we construct a model category which serves as a specific combinatorial model for this type of fibrations. Our main result is a generalisation of the locally coCartesian straightening and unstraightening construction of Lurie, which yields for any scaled simplicial set $S$ an equivalence of $(\infty,2)$-categories between the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(0,1)$-fibrations over $S$ (also known as inner coCartesian fibrations) and the $(\infty,2)$-category of functors $S \to \mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$ with values in $(\infty,2)$-categories. Given an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{B}$, our Grothendieck construction can be specialised to produce an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of local fibrations over $\mathbb{B}$ and the $(\infty,2)$-category of oplax unital functors with values in $\mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$. Finally, as an application of our results we provide a version of the Yoneda lemma for $(\infty,2)$-categories.

Bundles of metric structures as left ultrafunctors

Abstract:We pursue the study of Ultracategories initiated by Makkai and more recently Lurie by looking at properties of Ultracategories of complete metric structures, i.e. coming from continuous model theory, instead of ultracategories of models of first order theories. Our main result is that for any continuous theory $\mathbb{T}$, there is an equivalence between the category of left ultrafunctors from a compact Hausdorff space $X$ to the category of $\mathbb{T}$-models and a notion of bundle of $\mathbb{T}$-models over $X$. The notion of bundle of $\mathbb{T}$-models is new but recovers many classical notions like Bundle of Banach spaces, or (semi)-continuous field of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras or Hilbert spaces.

On Bundles That Admit Fiberwise Hyperbolic Dynamics

Abstract:This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberwise Anosov dynamical systems. Finally, we present several examples which show that our results are sharp in certain ways or illustrate necessity of various assumptions.

Abstract:We describe various approaches to understanding Fukaya categories of cotangent bundles. All of the approaches rely on introducing a suitable class of non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds. We review the work of Nadler-Zaslow [30, 29] and the authors [14], before discussing a new approach using family Floer cohomology [10] and the "wrapped Fukaya category". The latter, inspired by Viterbo's symplectic homology, emphasizes the connection to loop spaces, hence seems particularly suitable when trying to extend the existing theory beyond the simply connected case.

Abstract:We discuss variants of Berikashvili's functor that arise in differential homological algebra, from simplicial bundles, from ordinary topological bundles, and in more general categorical settings. We prove that, under suitable circumstances, the value of Berikasvili's functor parametrizes isomorphism classes of bundles in various contexts.

Abstract:We give new homotopy theoretic criteria for deciding when a fibration with homotopy finite fibers admits a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. The criteria lead to a new and unexpected result about homeomorphism groups of manifolds. A tool used in the proof is a surjective splitting of the assembly map for Waldhausen's functor A(X). We also give concrete examples of fibrations having a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers but which fail to admit a compact fiber smoothing. The examples are detected by algebraic K-theory invariants. We consider a refinement of the Becker-Gottlieb transfer. We show that a version of the axioms described by Becker and Schultz uniquely determines the refined transfer for the class of fibrations admitting a reduction to a fiber bundle with compact topological manifold fibers. In an appendix, we sketch a theory of characteristic classes for fibrations. The classes are primary obstructions to finding a compact fiber smoothing.

Abstract:A pedagogical but concise overview of fiber bundles and their connections is provided, in the context of gauge theories in physics. The emphasis is on defining and visualizing concepts and relationships between them, as well as listing common confusions, alternative notations and jargon, and relevant facts and theorems. Special attention is given to detailed figures and geometric viewpoints, some of which would seem to be novel to the literature. Topics are avoided which are well covered in textbooks, such as historical motivations, proofs and derivations, and tools for practical calculations. The present paper is best read in conjunction with the similar paper on Riemannian geometry cited herein.

Abstract:We study fibrations arising from indexed categories of the following form: fix two categories $\mathcal{A},\mathcal{X}$ and a functor $F : \mathcal{A} \times \mathcal{X} \longrightarrow\mathcal{X} $, so that to each $F_A=F(A,-)$ one can associate a category of algebras $\mathbf{Alg}_\mathcal{X}(F_A)$ (or an Eilenberg-Moore, or a Kleisli category if each $F_A$ is a monad). We call the functor $\int^{\mathcal{A}}\mathbf{Alg} \to \mathcal{A}$, whose typical fibre over $A$ is the category $\mathbf{Alg}_\mathcal{X}(F_A)$, the "fibration of algebras" obtained from $F$. Examples of such constructions arise in disparate areas of mathematics, and are unified by the intuition that $\int^\mathcal{A}\mathbf{Alg} $ is a form of semidirect product of the category $\mathcal{A}$, acting on $\mathcal{X}$, via the `representation' given by the functor $F : \mathcal{A} \times \mathcal{X} \longrightarrow\mathcal{X}$. After presenting a range of examples and motivating said intuition, the present work focuses on comparing a generic fibration with a fibration of algebras: we prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ has an initial object, under very mild assumptions on a fibration $p : \mathcal{E}\longrightarrow \mathcal{A}$, we can define a canonical action of $\mathcal{A}$ letting it act on the fibre $\mathcal{E}_\varnothing$ over the initial object. This result bears some resemblance to the well-known fact that the fundamental group $\pi_1(B)$ of a base space acts naturally on the fibers $F_b = p^{-1}b$ of a fibration $p : E \to B$.

6-Functor Formalisms and Smooth Representations

Abstract:The purpose of this article is threefold: Firstly, we propose some enhancements to the existing definition of 6-functor formalisms. Secondly, we systematically study the category of kernels, which is a certain 2-category attached to every 6-functor formalism. It provides powerful new insights into the internal structure of the 6-functor formalism and allows to abstractly define important finiteness conditions, recovering well-known examples from the literature. Finally, we apply our methods to the theory of smooth representations of $p$-adic Lie groups and, as an application, construct a canonical anti-involution on derived Hecke algebras generalizing results of Schneider--Sorensen. In an appendix we provide the necessary background on $\infty$-categories, higher algebra, enriched $\infty$-categories and $(\infty,2)$-categories. Among others we prove several new results on adjunctions in an $(\infty,2)$-category and in particular show that passing to the adjoint morphism is a functorial operation.

Abstract:We present a combinatorial analysis of fiber bundles of generalized configuration spaces on connected abelian Lie groups. These bundles are akin to those of Fadell-Neuwirth for configuration spaces, and their existence is detected by a combinatorial property of an associated finite partially ordered set. This is consistent with Terao's fibration theorem connecting bundles of hyperplane arrangements to Stanley's lattice supersolvability. We obtain a combinatorially determined class of K($\pi$,1) toric and elliptic arrangements. Under a stronger combinatorial condition, we prove a factorization of the Poincaré polynomial when the Lie group is noncompact. In the case of toric arrangements, this provides an analogue of Falk-Randell's formula relating the Poincaré polynomial to the lower central series of the fundamental group.

Fiber 2-Functors and Tambara-Yamagami Fusion 2-Categories

Abstract:We introduce group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, a strong categorification of the notion of a group-theoretical fusion 1-category. Physically speaking, such fusion 2-categories arise by gauging subgroups of a global symmetry. We show that group-theoretical fusion 2-categories are completely characterized by the property that the braided fusion 1-category of endomorphisms of the monoidal unit is Tannakian. Then, we describe the underlying finite semisimple 2-category of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and, more generally, of certain 2-categories of bimodules. We also partially describe the fusion rules of group-theoretical fusion 2-categories, and investigate the group gradings of such fusion 2-categories. Using our previous results, we classify fusion 2-categories admitting a fiber 2-functor. Next, we study fusion 2-categories with a Tambara-Yamagami defect, that is $\mathbb{Z}/2$-graded fusion 2-categories whose non-trivially graded factor is $\mathbf{2Vect}$. We classify these fusion 2-categories, and examine more closely the more restrictive notion of Tambara-Yamagami fusion 2-categories. Throughout, we give many examples to illustrate our various results.

Abstract:Higher bundles are homotopy coherent generalisations of classical fibre bundles. They appear in numerous contexts in geometry, topology and physics. In particular, higher principal bundles provide the geometric framework for higher-group gauge theories with higher-form gauge potentials and their higher-dimensional holonomies. An $\infty$-categorical formulation of higher bundles further allows one to identify these objects in contexts outside the worlds of smooth manifolds or topological spaces. This article reviews the theory of $\infty$-bundles, focussing on principal $\infty$-bundles, and surveys several of their applications. It is an invited contribution to the Topology section in the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics.

Abstract:In this paper, we explain how the abstract notion of a differential bundle in a tangent category provides a new way of thinking about the category of modules over a commutative ring and its opposite category. MacAdam previously showed that differential bundles in the tangent category of smooth manifolds are precisely smooth vector bundles. Here we provide characterizations of differential bundles in the tangent categories of commutative rings and (affine) schemes. For commutative rings, the category of differential bundles over a commutative ring is equivalent to the category of modules over that ring. For affine schemes, the category of differential bundles over the Spec of a commutative ring is equivalent to the opposite category of modules over said ring. Finally, for schemes, the category of differential bundles over a scheme is equivalent to the opposite category of quasi-coherent sheaves of modules over that scheme.

Abstract:Usually bundle gerbes are considered as objects of a 2-groupoid, whose 1-morphisms, called stable isomorphisms, are all invertible. I introduce new 1-morphisms which include stable isomorphisms, trivializations and bundle gerbe modules. They fit into the structure of a 2-category of bundle gerbes, and lead to natural definitions of surface holonomy for closed surfaces, surfaces with boundary, and unoriented closed surfaces.
Fano fibrations and DK conjecture for relative Grassmann flips

Abstract:Given a vector bundle $\mathcal E$ on a smooth projective variety $B$, the flag bundle $\mathcal F l(1,2,\mathcal E)$ admits two projective bundle structures over the Grassmann bundles $\mathcal G r(1, \mathcal E)$ and $G r(2, \mathcal E)$. The data of a general section of a suitably defined line bundle on $\mathcal F l(1,2,\mathcal E)$ defines two varieties: a cover $X_1$ of $B$ and a fibration $X_2$ on $B$ with general fiber isomorphic to a smooth Fano variety. We construct a semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of $X_2$ which consists of a list of exceptional objects and a subcategory equivalent to the derived category of $X_1$. As a byproduct, we obtain a new full exceptional collection for the Fano fourfold of degree $12$ and genus $7$. Any birational map of smooth projective varieties which is resolved by blowups with exceptional divisor $\mathcal F l(1, 2, \mathcal E)$ is an instance of a so-called Grassmann flip: we prove that the DK conjecture of Bondal-Orlov and Kawamata holds for such flips. This generalizes a previous result of Leung and Xie to a relative setting.

Functoriality for groupoid and Fell bundle $C^*$-algebras

Abstract:We define a class of morphisms between étale groupoids and show that there is a functor from the category with these morphisms to the category of $C^*$-algebras. We show that all homomorphisms between Cartan pairs of $C^*$-algebras that preserve the Cartan structure arise from such morphisms between the underlying Weyl groupoids and twists, and attain an equivalence of categories between Cartan pairs with structure preserving homomorphisms and a their associated twists. We define analogous morphisms for Fell bundles over $C^*$-algebras and show these functorially induce ${}^*$-homomorphisms between the Fell bundle $C^*$-algebras. We also construct colimit groupoids and Fell bundles for inductive systems of such morphisms, and show that the functor to $C^*$-algebras preserves these colimits.

Abstract:On a normal projective variety the locus of $\mu$-stable bundles that remain $\mu$-stable on all Galois covers prime to the characteristic is open in the moduli space of Gieseker semi-stable sheaves. On a smooth projective curve of genus at least 2 this locus is big in the moduli space of stable bundles, i.e., its complement has codimension at least 2.

Abstract:We introduce higher analogs for cleavages and flatness within the context of (Kan) simplicial fibrations, and apply them to provide geometric models for Lie groupoid representations up to homotopy. Concretely, we establish a functorial equivalence between representations up to homotopy of a Lie groupoid and simplicial vector bundles over its nerve endowed with a cleavage. Our result extends earlier work of Gracia-Saz and Mehta, it can be seen as a relative version of the Dold-Kan correspondence, and also as a higher smooth generalization of the Grothendieck correspondence between pseudo-functors and fibered categories.
