Abstract:Preadsorbed water, along with the surrounding environment, significantly modulated the catalytic performance of Pt/C in the conversion of oleic acid to heptadecane. After adsorbing 20wt% and 30wt% H2O, the yield of heptadecane increased from 60% over the dried Pt/C to 65% and 70%, respectively. The preadsorbed water on Pt/C increased the acidity and adsorption properties of hydrotropic species, such as carboxyl (COOH), therefore, increasing catalytic performance. This could lead to facile improvement in the efficiency of catalyst performance without complicated or expensive surface modulation.

Abstract:The facile and sustainable production of hydrogen through water reduction requires high performance catalyst consisting of earth abundant elements for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here we report the synthesis of ultrathin molybdenum disulfide/g-carbon nitride (MoS2/g-C3N4) vdW layers via an in situ interfacial engineering method. Such MoS2/g-C3N4 vdW layers show outstanding HER activity with comparable potential and Tafel slope to commercial Pt catalysts. Our experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations revealed that the unpreceded electrocatalytic performances originate from the strong interfacial coupling of vdW layers through out-of-plane Mo-N bonding, which therefore enhances hydrogen adsorption/reduction kinetics for HER. These findings will shed light on the programmable catalysts for low cost and highly active water reduction.

Abstract:WOx/ZrO2 catalyzed hydration of cyclohexene in sub-critical water was experimentally investigated. The migration of reaction zone into sub-critical water makes it possible to run the hydration in a single liquid phase, and the reaction is free from the limitation of liquid–liquid phase mass transfer to hydration kinetics. The severe hydrothermal environments favor the transformation of surface active sites on WOx–ZrO2 catalysts to Brønsted acid centers of stronger acidity, which are highly effective for the hydration of cyclohexene to the desired product cyclohexanol.

Abstract:Hydrolytic degradation has caused numerous efficient catalytic systems to suffer because in many cases it is impossible to fully exclude water from the reaction systems. Here, we demonstrate an effective strategy of stabilizing water-sensitive organic-ligand-based homogeneous catalysts by constructing them into a superhydrophobic porous framework, which renders them extraordinarily water resistant yet fully retains their intrinsic catalytic activities under heterogeneous systems. Representatively, after metalation of the superhydrophobic porous phosphite-ligand-based framework with Rh species, the resultant catalyst exhibits superior activities and dramatically enhanced durability in mimic continuous hydroformylation processes of the internal olefins in comparison with the homogeneous counterparts. In addition, because it is solid in nature, the catalyst can be readily recycled with negligible loss of performance. Given the modular nature and the broad scope of organic ligands, our work opens a new avenue for stabilizing water-sensitive homogeneous catalysts into highly water-tolerate heterogeneous catalysts.
HZSM-5 zeolite modification and catalytic reaction mechanism in the reaction of cyclohexene hydration

Abstract:This study investigated a three-phase (liquid–liquid–solid) reaction system of cyclohexene hydration where the catalyst was hydrophilic at the bottom of the water phase. Cyclohexene conversion was low since it was difficult for it to come into contact with the oil. The HCl-OTS-HZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by acid and alkylation modification, then subsequently characterized. Acid modification enabled HZSM-5 zeolite to remove some aluminum atoms, increasing specific surface area, pore volume, and acid sites. N -octyltrimethoxysilane (OTS) was grafted onto the HZSM-5 zeolite surface, i.e. , alkylation modification, to improve the contact area between immiscible reactants. Consequently, cyclohexene conversion reached 24.07%. Cyclohexene hydration was calculated using the 34T cluster model, and bridging hydroxyl and water molecule adsorption sites were explored. Simulations confirmed that the reaction energy barrier for the HCl-OTS-HZSM-5 catalyzed hydration reaction = 46.67 kJ mol −1 , considerably less than that with HZSM-5 zeolite (73.78 kJ mol −1 ). The theoretical results reasonably explain the experiments and provide guidance to prepare catalysts with high catalytic activity.

Abstract:The research progress in the catalysts and technology for cyclohexene hydration to cyclohexanol was reviewed. The existing problem in the catalysts and technology for cyclohexene hydration was analyzed. The popular hydration catalyst was primarily zeolites which are stable and easy to be separated for recycling use. It was pointed out that the traditional cyclohexene hydration technology had the disadvantages of high consumption and low conversion. The research trend of cyclohexene hydration technology should be focused on the development of reactive distillation technology and the corresponding ion exchange resin.
Unusual Pathway of Epoxide Hydration over a Novel CoIII(salen)-based Pseudohomogeneous Catalyst with Excellent Performance

Abstract:Due to high H2O/epoxide molar ratio for non-catalytic hydration, industrial production of bulk chemicals 1,2-diols is much energy-intensive. As a very promising route to produce 1,2-diols with low energy consumption, catalytic hydration of epoxides has aroused much interest from both academy and industry. The key is to develop a catalyst with high activity and stability at a low H2O/epoxide molar ratio. It has been demonstrated that encapsulating a homogeneous catalytic species into the cavity of porous material is a very efficient way to obtain a high-performance heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, a novel pseudohomogeneous catalyst with the distinctive Co(salen)-PF6 encapsulated in nanocages of a typical mesoporous material FDU-12 has been successfully developed, which exhibits both unexpectedly tremendously enhanced activity at the low H2O/epoxide molar ratio close to stoichiometric ratio and unique surprising recyclability without regeneration between runs in propylene oxide hydration. Especially, based on the systematic experimental design/implementation, particular structural characterizations and in-depth calculations, the pathway the newly developed catalyst going through has been investigated and determined to be an unusual bisubstrate-directly-activated cooperative mechanism (i.e. a bimolecular cooperative activation mechanism not involving Co(salen)–OH). The cooperative activation effect gives rise to the unexpectedly tremendously enhanced activity of our new catalyst, while no involving of Co(salen)–OH during the catalytic process leads to its best and unique catalytic stability in epoxide hydration among all the reported CoIII(salen)-based heterogeneous catalyst. It is believed that this study and the developed catalyst are of great significance for developing the catalytic hydration technology with low energy consumption and for developing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The development of a catalyst that delivers high activities and selectivities with excellent durability is of great importance. Numerous efficient catalysts suffer from the inherent hydrolysis liabilities, plaguing their practical applications. Herein, we show that this challenge can be tackled by constructing them into superhydrophobic porous frameworks, as exemplified by a water-sensitive phosphite ligand, tris(2-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite. The efficiency and long-term stability of the developed system are remarkably high in the hydroformylation of internal olefins after metalation with Rh species, superior to the corresponding homogeneous analogues. The significantly boosted hydrolytic stability allows for catalytic transformations using water as a green solvent, which not only facilitates the isolation of the products, but also furnishes the aldehydes with higher regioselectivities for the desired linear form in comparison with that operated under benchmark conditions using toluene as a reaction medium. Given these promising results, we anticipate the strategy advanced herein will form the basis for constructive perspectives in the enhancement of the water resistance of catalysts and the development of high performance hydroformylation catalysts.
Amphiphilic HZSM-5 Zeolite Catalyst for Hydration of Cyclohexene on Phase-boundary Interface

Abstract:Amphiphilic HZSM-5 zeolite particles were prepared by a partial modification of the external surface of HZSM-5 zeolite with trimethylchlorosilane. These amphiphilic zeolite particles were oriented at the water-organic boundary when they were added to the mixture of cyclohexene and water or water with CCl4. IR spectra indicated that the intensity of the band for the terminal silanols decreased significantly and the band for the methyl groups(C-H stretching vibration) emerged after modification, which gave a direct evidence that partial hydrophilic silanol groups on the surface of the zeolite were replaced by the hydrophobic: alkylsilyl groups. This amphiphilic HZSM-5 zeolite exhibited a much higher catalytic activity than the parent HZSM-5 zeolite in the hydration of cyclohexene phase-boundary reaction without adding co-solvents and stirring. Because this phase-boundary reaction was proceeding through a channel-reaction mechanism, the hydrophobic HZSM-5 particles modified by trimethylchlorosilane also showed the better catalytic performance than the parent zeolite.

Abstract:Cylcohexanol is an essential bulk chemical that can be produced via cyclohexene hydration, a liquid-liquid two-phase reaction that is limited by the low reaction rate and the equilibrium conversion. Adding an appropriate solvent is the most promising method to break through these limitations. However, in previous works the solvent was almost blindly selected without a global consideration. In this work, a rational multiscale method is proposed for the effective selection of an economical and sustainable solvent for the direct hydration of cyclohexene. At the molecular scale, liquid-liquid phase equilibrium was estimated using group contribution methods to rapidly screen the potential solvent candidates from a range of organics, based on the partition coefficient. At the reactor scale, the candidates were experimentally investigated to pick out the solvents that could significantly improve the conversion, without introducing side reactions or deactivating the catalyst. At the process scale, the total annual cost (TAC), CO 2 emission, and other metrics were calculated to evaluate the eco-efficiency of all solvents. Using this multi-scale method, acetophenone was selected as an eco-efficient solvent from over 100 organics, resulting in the reduction of TAC by 8 % and CO 2 emission by 17 % in the production process. Using acetophenone also led to the increase of cyclohexanol yield from 12.3 % to 27.6 % without the occurrence of side reactions and catalyst deactivation.

Abstract:Two novel silica-based organic-inorganic hybrid (interphase) Fe(III) catalysts have been successfully prepared by the flexible ligand method, characterized and applied to the efficient catalytic oxidation of various types of substrates using 30% H2O2 or tert-BuOOH under mild conditions. The catalysts can be recovered and reused for four reaction cycles with total turnover numbers being about 29 using cyclohexene as the substrate. The mechanism for the O-O bond cleavage was proposed based on the results in combination with previous experimental results.

Abstract:Zeolite is considered an ideal catalyst for olefin hydration due to its high specific surface area and abundant acid sites. However, the immiscibility of the water-oil two phases in olefin hydration limits mass transfer, and the side reaction of etherification occurs acutely, resulting in a low yield of alcohol. Thus, water-oil amphiphilic HZSM-5 was prepared by sulfonating silanized zeolite. The successful introduction of organic and sulfonic acid groups is demonstrated by FT-IR, TG, and water contact angles. Amphiphilic HZSM-5 can stabilize the Pickering emulsion and catalyze cyclopentene hydration at the phase interface. In addition, NH3-TPD and Py-IR show that the amount of strong Bro̷nsted acid sites of zeolites increases significantly after sulfonation. This facilitates the rate-determining step of cyclopentene activation by H+ to form carbocation. Moreover, the nucleophilic side reactions are inhibited by a high concentration of H+. Finally, under the optimized reaction condition, the conversion of cyclopentene can achieve 5.066% with a selectivity of 85.37% to cyclopentanol, which almost reaches the reaction equilibrium.

Abstract:Selective catalysis has always been an essential process for manufacturing various fine chemicals, such as food additives, pharmaceuticals and perfumes. Practically, pure target products are difficultly obtained even after complex purification procedure during industrial production. The development of cost-effective, high chemoselective and long life catalyst may be an attractive solution. But such catalyst is elusive. Herein, a novel class of amphiphilic N-doped carbon (NC), featuring graphitic carbon (GC) and highly dispersed Cu@Co NPs, are fabricated via a simple calcination of Cu2+-doped bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) precusor directly. Compared with monometallic Co@GC/NC, the side reaction of C=O bonds hydrogenation is obviously restrained, and thus pure target product can be systematically obtained by Cu@Co@GC/NC, highlighting the high selectivity of Cu. More importantly, an amphiphilic characteristic in Cu@Co@GC/NC is significant knob to integrate organic substrates with water very well. This amphiphilic material shows great potential as field-deployable pathway for dispersible metal catalysts in organic system.

Molecular dynamics simulationsfurther reveal that the hydrophobic microenvironment is constructedby preventing the hydrogen bond formation on the carbonaceous cocatalystsurface. Overall, this study provides a general method to relievethe CO2 mass transfer limit to accelerate the CO2RR in water.

Abstract:Hydroisomerization of long-chain n -alkanes is an indispensable route for upgrading fossil fuels and lubricant oils to meet the state of art regulations. Precisely regulate the distribution of acidic and metal active sites to suppress unwanted cracking reaction is hitherto a difficult task. In this work, we develop a simple coating-carbonation strategy for constructing novel core-shell bifunctional catalysts, comprising ZSM-22 zeolite core with the partially blocked channels and Pt nanoparticles loaded on the mesoporous SiO 2 shell. The unique treatment not only adjusted the distribution of acid sites located within the micropore channels and external surface, but also alter the locations and dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. Owing to the short diffusion lengths, nanoscale distance between acid sites and Pt species, and high metal dispersions, the core-shell bifunctional catalyst exhibits outperformed performance in n -hexadecane hydroisomerization, i.e., the yield of isomerized hexadecane can reach 87.9 %, which is among the relatively high level compared with the previous reported Pt/zeolite counterparts. Moreover, the catalyst also displays excellent stability (no deactivation within 100 h). The disclosed structure-catalysis relationship provides rational reference for designing the synergistic meta-acid active sites in the hydroisomerization of long-chain n -alkanes.

Abstract:The reaction behavior of cyclohexene hydration catalyzed by HZSM-5 was investigated with ultrasound in a batch stirring autoclave, and effect of the ultrasound on the hydration reaction was studied. The results showed that the ultrasound with an acoustic power of 900 W gave the best enhancement effect for cyclohexene hydration catalyzed by HZSM-5, and the cyclohexene conversion was increased from 6.1% to 8.6% under certain reaction conditions. It was proved that lower power ultrasound could not provide enough cavitation bubbles and higher power ultrasound should restrict the transmission of the ultrasonic energy in the reaction system.

Abstract:In many reactions restricted by water, selective removal of water from the reaction system is critical and usually requires a membrane reactor. We found that a simple physical mixture of hydrophobic poly(divinylbenzene) with cobalt-manganese carbide could modulate a local environment of catalysts for rapidly shipping water product in syngas conversion. We were able to shift the water-sorption equilibrium on the catalyst surface, leading to a greater proportion of free surface that in turn raised the rate of syngas conversion by nearly a factor of 2. The carbon monoxide conversion reached 63.5%, and 71.4% of the hydrocarbon products were light olefins at 250°C, outperforming poly(divinylbenzene)-free catalyst under equivalent reaction conditions. The physically mixed CoMn carbide/poly(divinylbenzene) catalyst was durable in the continuous test for 120 hours.
