Abstract:Recently, there is an urgent demand to remove oil and organic solvents with low surface tension from oily wastewater, which promotes the application of interface biomimetic materials in oil/water separation. In our work, a novel NiAl LDHs coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless steel mesh (SS-SSM) with efficient oil/water separation performance was successfully prepared. The 3D flower-like structure intercalated by LDHs monocrystalline flakes was anchored on metallic wires in urea solution by a hydrothermal method and decorated with low surface energy molecules. The as-prepared mesh exhibited perfect superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 156° and sliding angle of 5°, thus achieving self-cleaning property. In addition, the separation efficiency for a series of oil/water mixtures of the coated mesh was studied, which was up to 98% for most sample oils. More importantly, even treated under severer conditions such as ultrasonic, abrasion and chemical etching solution, the as-prepared meshes possessed good reproducibility in terms of contact angles and separation efficiencies. It is expected that the designed mesh could provide a b brand-new method for superhydrophobic surface coating, making it a potential functional material for self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, fluid drag reduction and oil/water separation.

Abstract:Oily wastewater and oil spill have always been a common concern of environmental problems, and superwetting materials are the key to oil-water separation. However, the superwetting material is constantly blocked by oil, which is a crucial obstacle to its practical application. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to protect the underlying superhydrophilic layer by using a hydrophobic aluminate coupling agent. And we construct the superhydrophilic layer with cellulose and the superoleophobic surface with FS50-modified rough nanoparticles. Porous ceramics can achieve stable superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic properties through a simple soaking step (modified CM). The advanced and receding contact angles on the modified CM surface were 151.74° and 149.11° for crude oil. The modified CM could maintain the contact angle of oil above 150° at various temperatures, pH values, and abrasion. In the continuous separation process, the flux remained above 1.4×10 4 L m -2 h -1 , and the separation efficiency could achieve above 99% for soybean oil. Besides, the modified CM could also separate oil-in-water emulsion. Further, we proposed the coexistence and fabrication mechanism of superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic interface. This study provides new design ideas for developing durable oil-water separation materials.

Abstract:Recently, biomimetic modified membranes for oil–water separation have attracted extensive attention. However, complex processing and severe oil fouling have always been the main obstacles to its application. To explore facile and green preparation methods is urgently desired. In this study, a green and facile modification strategy was proposed, when the feature that sodium periodate could promote procyanidin deposition was utilized to prepare superhydrophilic fabrics and superhydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membranes to separate oil–water mixtures on demand. This method could simultaneously build a rough structure and introduce polar functional groups on the substrate surface. The prepared materials possessed excellent oil–water separation ability and cycle stability. The flux and efficiency of separating immiscible oil–water mixtures through superhydrophilic fabrics could reach up to 38,100 L·m-2h−1 and 99.8%, while those of separating oil in water emulsion through superhydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membranes could be as high as 681 L·m-2h−1 and 99.5%, respectively, showing that the superhydrophilic materials wetted with water had excellent antifouling ability. The superhydrophilic coating was also featured with excellent chemical stability and mechanical durability. The preparation strategy of the superhydrophilic materials provided in this study can promote the development of oil–water separation technology.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membrane constructed by hydrophilic polymers possesses great advantage in the separation of oily waste water, due to its intrinsic oil-repellent property. The formation of hydration layer to repel and block oil is considered as the mechanism of underwater superoleophobicity and subsequent oil/water separation. Constructing a stable hydrophilic polymer network on the substrate surface would significantly improve the robustness of hydration layer. Experiments: In this work, a feasible and universal mussel-inspired dip-coating method was developed for constructing stable hydrophilic polymer network onto target substrate surface, via successively immersing substrate membranes into aqueous solutions of polydopamine (PDA) and catechol-functionalized hydrophilic polymer (CFHP). After pre-wetting with water, the polymer network would swell with water to form a thin and stable water film layer, serving as a barrier against oil penetration. Findings: The as-prepared CFHP/PDA modified membranes exhibit outstanding performance in separating various oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants, with separation flux up to 5641.1 L·m-2·h-1 and separation efficiency achieving 99.98%. The surface modification method developed in this work can be easily extended to various materials and membrane systems, for achieving a variety of practical applications such as industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials are widely utilized to separate oil from water. Proposing a facial method to synthesis a durable hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surface for efficient and easy oil/water separation is necessary due to the danger of oil spills for ecosystems. Herein, a robust superhydrophobic filter is introduced for oil/water separation. Organosilica nano/microstructures covered resorcinol-formaldehyde resin are loaded on the copper mesh surface to earn a roughened surface then modified by 1-dodecanethiol to get a low surface energy mesh. The prepared superhydrophobic copper mesh was shaped to a basket-like as an oil skimmer device that repels the water and collects the oil through its pores. The sample was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. The sample exhibits high water contact angle, θ=149±1° and the oil contact angle, showing its superhydrophobic nature. The prepared superhydrophobic mesh was used as an efficient and robust filter to separate oil from water. Its oil/water separation efficiency is more than 90% and this value approximately preserves after 50 cycles. The prepared sample also shows self-cleaning property. Thanks to the stable and rough structured created by resorcinol-formaldehyde resin covered by organosilica particles and also the low surface energy provided by 1-dodecanethiol, the prepared sample shows superhydrophobic property with high efficiency to separate oil from water.

Abstract:Recently, wide attention has been paid to underwater superoleophobic surfaces for their great potential in the industry. However, the large-scale practical utilization of current underwater superoleophobic coatings is mainly limited by complex and expensive fabrication processes, poor physical and chemical durability. Herein, we fabricated a bioinspired superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic poly (vinyl alcohol)/montmorillonite composite surface by a facile, green process. This composite surface demonstrated excellent anti-wax and self-cleaning properties. The outstanding mechanical and chemical stabilities of this surface allowed it to retain its underwater superoleophobicity after 50 cycles of sandpaper abrading or prolonged immersion in corrosive solutions. Additionally, stainless steel mesh coated with this composite surface can separate various oil/water mixtures including emulsions only driven by gravity with ultrahigh separation efficiency (>99.2%). Furthermore, the coated mesh achieved an extremely high separation efficiency of 98.6% and a separation flux of 37098.6 L·m−2·h−1 following 30 separation cycles. This multifunctional composite surface holds tremendous promise for large-scale practical applications.

Abstract:The research of superhydrophilic interface is developing rapidly, but the preparations of superhydrophilic surfaces through simple methods are still challenging. Herein, we reported a facile, rapid and environmentally-friendly approach for preparing a novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane via the thermal oxidation of Cu mesh and one-step coordinated assembly of Fe(III)CMC chelate hydrogel. Superhydrophilicity was attributed to the hydrophilicity of Fe(III)-CMC chelate hydrogel and nanoneedle-like rough structure of CuO@Cu membrane. The membrane was used to separate a variety of oil/water mixtures and exhibited excellent separation performance. Moreover, the membrane exhibited the excellent durability and superior stability against corrosion conditions. We envision that the Fe(III)-CMC@CuO@Cu membrane with good underwater superoleophobicity could provide a candidate not only for oil/water separation but also many other potential applications such as underwater oil manipulation, self-clean, and bio-adhesion control. Abstract:Increasing attention has been paid recently to superwettability and its prospective potential applications in various fields. A new approach towards the establishment of flexible, self-assembled superhydrophobic surfaces with self-reported wettability on a variety of substrates has been advanced. The approach involves the fabrication of a dense monolayer of photonic crystal films that possess a layered structure with superior adhesion at the liquid–gas–solid interface. Thus, the resulting hierarchical photonic crystal film with a structurally hydrophobic surface offers a promising addition to the creation of durable and flexible superhydrophobic surfaces across a variety of substrates that exhibit the self-reported wettability. Furthermore, a bifunctional membrane that can effectively remove oil and adsorb heavy metal ions contained in wastewater has been developed for potential use in large-scale industrial wastewater treatment. This research sheds fresh light on the application of bionics and the lotus and mussel functions in oil/water separation.

Abstract:In this work, novel biodegradable poly(lactic acid) oil absorption and filtration materials with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties were successfully fabricated. The as-prepared materials can separate oil from oil–water mixtures with high selectivity, high separation efficiency, stable performance, and easy recyclability, and are ideal candidates for applications in the cleanup of oil pollutants and the separation of oil and water. The used materials can be easily disposed because of their biodegradable essence and thus overcome the hard disposal and environmental contaminant limitations of traditional oil–water separation materials. This work provides a new design idea to prepare oil–water separation materials with consideration of both excellent separation ability and environmental friendliness, which shows attractive potential applications in industrial oily wastewater and oil spill cleanup.
Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic cement-coated mesh for oil/water separation by gravity

Abstract:Oily wastewater has severely affected the water environment health. To better overcome this problem, a number of superhydrophobic or superoleophobic materials have been used for oil/water separation. Nevertheless, there are still great challenges in the simple and rapid environmentally- friendly preparation method. In this study, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface was fabricated for oil/water separation by soaking the stainless steel meshes (SSM) into cement solution. The as-fabricated surface exhibited a high oil contact angle (OCA, 159 ± 2°) in water environment. In addition, the cement-coated stainless steel meshes (CCSSM) separated the oil/water mixtures with a high separation efficiency of over 90% and a permeate flux of 3397 L m-2 h-1. Moreover, after reuse for 5 times, the cement-coated meshes maintained a separation efficiency of over 95% in separating the lubricating oil /water mixtures. Besides, they still maintained the underwater superoleophobicity after being stored in real seawater for 15 days or in extreme solution (pH, 4-12), thus displaying their corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, they bore sand impact for 8 times and possessed superior antifouling performance. Further, the underlying mechanism was also extensively examined.

Abstract:Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic materials have demonstrated good application prospects in the oil/water separation. However, their fabrication process may be inefficient and high energy consumption. For this reason, this paper proposes a method for simultaneously deposited hierarchical structures with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties on the anode and cathode via one-step electrodeposition. The materials fabricated on both anode and cathode exhibit superior antifouling performance and excellent oil/water separation efficiency (above 96.2% for all five experimental oils) with a considerable permeation flux (4125 ± 67 L m−2 h−1). Moreover, the as-prepared materials maintain excellent oil/water separation efficiency after 20 separation cycles, which are higher than 98.1% and 98.8%, respectively. Besides, the materials can be stored in different concentrations of salt water for 50 days, demonstrating their outstanding corrosion resistance. Our study provides an strategy for the fabrication of superwetting materials, which is expected to promote the development of oil/water separation technology

Abstract:A superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic Cu(OH)2-covered mesh with micro- and nanoscale hierarchical composite structures is successfully fabricated through a one-step chemical oxidation of a smooth-copper mesh. Such mesh, without any further modification, can selectively separate water from oil/water mixtures with high separation efficiency, and possess excellent stability even after 60 uses. This method provides a simple, low-cost, and scalable strategy for the purification of oily wastewater.

Abstract:The development of sustainable, low-cost, green and efficient oil–water separation materials is an attractive and challenging work. Oil/water separation process has been achieved by a variety of materials with special wettability, but most materials require complex instruments or involve toxic and corrosive chemicals, which might lead to some potential economic and environmental issues. Our work proposed here is a novel super-hydrophilic, underwater super-oleophobic cellulose hydrogel-coated mesh (CHCM) which produced by deep eutectic solvent, aimed for efficient gravity-driven oil/water separation. Based on this pre-wet CHCM, the separation efficiency of various oil–water mixtures was above 98.0%, and the results also showed that CHCM has good recyclability and durability, even after 20 cycles, the separation efficiency also maintained at 98.5%. Impressively, the prepared CHCM also exhibited good salt resistance; it can separate a high efficiency pump oil mixture from a saturated aqueous NaCl solution. Through XPS analysis of CHCM, the oil–water separation mechanism is due to the large number of super-hydrophilic groups on its surface. This simple, green, and efficient method overcomes an important barrier to the safe separation of oil–water mixtures and provides insights into the design of advanced materials for practical oil–water separation.

Abstract:In view of the complexity and diversity of multi-state oils, the development of green and low-cost materials with high selectivity to oils has important ecological significance in the polluted water treatment. Herein, a simple method was proposed to develop large-scale production of superhydrophobic sponges (CPMF200 sponges) for high-efficiency oil/water separation under different complex environments. The as-prepared CPMF200 sponges possessed many superior properties, including high roughness, well-developed porosity, good thermal stability, excellent chemical stability, and superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle is 152°), which is conducive to high oil adsorption capacity (up to 70-179 times of its own weight) and oil-water separation. More importantly, the CPMF400 sponge has an excellent photothermal conversion capability to improve the fluidity of high viscosity oil for oil recovery. Based on a simple synthesis method, it exhibits high-efficiency absorption of multi-state oils and excellent oil-water separation performance and strongly proves their application prospects in treating oily wastewater.

Abstract:Oil/water separation has become an increasingly important field due to frequent industrial oily wastewater emission and crude oil spill accidents. Herein, we fabricate a robust superhydrophobic loofah sponge via a versatile, environmentally friendly, and low-cost dip coating strategy, which involves the modification of commercial loofah sponge with waterborne polyurea and fused SiO2 nanoparticles without the modification of any toxic low-surface-energy compound. The as-prepared loofah sponge showed excellent superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties and exhibited robustness for effective oil-water separation in extremely harsh environments (such as 1 M HCl, 1 M NaOH, saturated NaCl solution and hot water higher than 95 °C) due to the remarkably high chemical stability. In addition, the as-prepared loofah sponge was capable of excellent anti-fouling, has self-cleaning ability and could act as the absorber for effective separation of surfactant-free oil-in-water emulsions. More importantly, the as-prepared loofah sponge demonstrated remarkable robustness against strong sandpaper abrasion and finger wipes, while retaining its superhydrophobicity and efficient oil/water separation efficiency even after more than 50 abrasion cycles. This facile and green synthesis approach presented here has the advantage of large-scale fabrication of a multifunctional biomass-based adsorbent material as a promising candidate in anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and versatile water-oil separation.

Abstract:Inspired by the natural surface adaptations of springtails (Collembola), we developed a novel lignin-coated nanoparticle system with a petaloid porous structure that mimics their air-retention and water-repelling capabilities. The biomimetic materials exhibit remarkable superhydrophobicity (CA water ≈ 160°) and superoleophilicity (CA oil ≈ 0°), crucial for enhancing selective oil adsorption. The unique structure traps air, ensuring excellent buoyancy and stability even in submerged conditions, while offering resistance to aggressive solvents. Additionally, the nanoparticles possess magnetic responsiveness, enabling precise manipulation in oil-water separation processes. This functionality is critical for a variety of industrial and environmental applications. In performance tests, the material achieved an oil-water separation efficiency of 97 %, with a permeation flux of 850 Lm −2 h −1 . Even after multiple cycles, it maintained high separation efficiency and robustness, enduring chemically harsh environments. Our approach presents a highly durable and efficient solution to complex oil-water separation challenges, advancing the field of smart material applications.

Abstract:Designing a stable and uniform hydrophilic material for separation of oil and water is strongly desired for sustainable management of oily wastewater. Herein, a stable and uniform bio-inspired coating onto the non-woven fabric substrate with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via rapid co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine was demonstrated. Ammonium persulfate outperformed other oxidants (e.g., Cu2+-H2O2 and NaIO4) to rapidly trigger the co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine for homogeneous superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface engineering. Furthermore, the co-deposition conditions, i.e., concentration of ammonium persulfate and exposure duration, have a positive dependence on the hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity of the coated fabric membranes. Specifically, the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle of 165.4 ± 1.1°, sliding angle of 2.5 ± 0.5°) can be obtained for the coated fabric membranes at the optimal co-deposition condition (i.e., 28.5 mmol L−1 persulfate and coating duration of 7 h), showing a great potential in gravitational oil-water separation (permeation flux >115,000 L m−2 h−1; oil rejection >99.2%). Integrating with a superhydrophobic copper mesh, the oil-water mixed solution can be continuously and sufficiently separated, realizing simultaneous recovery of pure oil and water from oily wastewater. In addition, the bio-inspired coating displays a strong long-term chemical robustness and stability in extreme environments (i.e., acidic/alkaline solutions and oils). The study provides a facile, cost-effective and practical strategy in constructing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic interfaces for sustainable treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract:Serious damage caused by oily wastewater makes the development of efficient superhydrophobic and superoleophilic materials for oil/water separation processes critical and urgent. Herein, durable superhydrophobic nanometer-scale TiO2 grains with low-surface-energy substance composite-modified materials were fabricated by using a cost-effective and facile synthesis method for the gravity-driven separation of oil/water mixtures under harsh conditions. Different substrates, such as sawdust, wheat straw, cotton, sponge and fabric, were applied for superhydrophobic surface preparation, and various low-surface-energy reagents could interact with deposited TiO2 nanoparticles, including cetylamine, dodecanethiol, stearic acid and HDTMS. The resultant materials showed superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle (WCA) higher than 150.8°. The separation of various oil/water mixtures with high efficiency and purity was acquired by using the as-prepared sponge. More importantly, the coated sponge exhibited good resistance to various harsh environmental solutions. Moreover, its superhydrophobicity also remained even after 12 months of storage in air or 10 cycles of abrasion. The durable superhydrophobic coating prepared in this work could be practically used for the highly efficient separation of oil/water mixtures under various harsh conditions.

Abstract:To address the worldwide oil and water separation issue, a novel approach was inspired by natural phenomena to synthesize superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes via a scale up fabrication approach. The synthesized membranes possess a delicate organic core of PVDF-HFP and an inorganic shell of a CuO nanosheet structure, which endows super-flexible properties owing to the merits of PVDF-HFP backbones, and superhydrophilic functions contributed by the extremely rough surface of a CuO nanosheet anchored on flexible PVDF-HFP. Such an organic core and inorganic shell architecture not only functionalizes membrane performance in terms of antifouling, high flux, and low energy consumption, but also extends the lifespan by enhancing its mechanical strength and alkaline resistance to broaden its applicability. The resultant membrane exhibits good oil/water separation efficiency higher than 99.7%, as well as excellent anti-fouling properties for various oil/water mixtures. Considering the intrinsic structural innovation and its integrated advantages, this core–shell nanofibrous membrane is believed to be promising for oil/water separation, and this facile approach is also easy for scaled up manufacturing of functional organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes with insightful benefits for industrial wastewater treatment, sensors, energy production, and many other related areas.
