Abstract:Guest-edited by Prof. Liqun Zhang, Prof. Wantai Yang, and Prof. Feng Shi, this special issue of Macromolecular Rapid Communications is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the College of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE), Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT). BUCT was founded in 1958 to educate students in chemical engineering towards advanced science and technology. BUCT is a national key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and one of the Project 211 universities and 985 Project Innovation Platforms. With responsibilities of innovative fundamental science, advanced research, and originally creative techniques, BUCT has founded two National Key Laboratories: 1) The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering and 2) The State Key Laboratory of Organic-Inorganic Composites, both of which are highly connected with polymer materials and chemical engineering. Every year, BUCT provides one-third of graduates for industries in polymer materials and chemical engineering in China. BUCT has a dedication to solving various important problems in industry and in developing Chinese industries related to polymer materials and chemical engineering. CMSE is one of the earliest three departments founded together with BUCT. The feature discipline of polymer materials at CMSE qualified as one of only two national key disciplines in 1988 in this field; materials science became a national key discipline in 2007; materials science and engineering qualified as a Beijing key discipline in 2008, and a feature discipline of National Defense Science and Technology in 2016. The discipline of materials science and engineering was among those awarding quality of the master's degree in the first round of national approval, awarding quality of the PhD degree in the second round, and with qualifications of post-docs in the first round. Based on this discipline, CMSE has the only National Research Center of Carbon Fiber Engineering and Technology in China. To date, CMSE has the largest scale for polymer education, with a huge team of 201 faculties working on polymer science and engineering for teaching and research, covering senior and junior scientists of Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Distinguished Expert of Thousand Talents program, Chair Professors of Yangtze River Scholars Program, and Distinguished Young Scholars Supported by National Natural Science Funds. CMSE admits over 600 undergraduate students and more than 600 graduate students every year. By solving various industrial problems with innovative technologies, CMSE has won many National Technology Invention awards and National Science and Technology Progress awards, thus having made great contributions to the development of polymer materials and chemical engineering. In 2017, CMSE entered 1.52‰ in the worldwide ESI ranking. In this special issue of Macromolecular Rapid Communications, we introduce recent research achievements in polymer science and engineering at CMSE, including a collection of 1 review, 1 feature article, and 16 research papers. These works are contributed by faculties working on multidisciplinary research in CMSE such as polymerization methods, self-healing elastomers, supramolecular materials, polyimide fibers, polymer photonic crystals, biomaterials of injectable cell carriers, cells/fabrics composite, polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers, polycrystal growth, etc. Although we are not able to cover all the progress taking place in CMSE, this special issue presents how interdisciplinary researches connects materials science, chemistry, biology, and engineering to advance both fundamental understanding and industrial applications of polymer materials. We sincerely hope this special issue will draw wide attention to polymer research at CMSE, BUCT and facilitate potential collaborations worldwide. We appreciate the great support of Dr. Bo Weng, editor of Macromolecular Rapid Communications, as well as the efforts of the whole editorial team. Moreover, we are grateful to all the authors for their contributions to this special issue. Last but not least, with this special issue, we sincerely congratulate the 60th anniversary of both CMSE and BUCT, and wish more progress and greater success in their future development. Liqun Zhang obtained his B.Sc. (1990), M.Sc. (1992), and Ph.D. (1995) from BUCT. He has been a professor at CMSE since 1995 and the dean since 2016. He worked as a visiting scholar at the University of Akron (1990–2000) and then as a post-doc at Case Western Reserve University (2000–2001). He holds several external positions, including director of the Key Lab of Beijing City on the Preparation and Processing of Novel Polymer Materials. His research interests include rubber science and engineering, polymer nanocomposites, bio-based and biomedical materials, polymer processing engineering, etc. Wantai Yang is a professor at CMSE. He received his B.Sc. from Tsinghua University (1982) and M.Sc. from BUCT (1985). He has been a faculty member at CMSE since 1985 and obtained his Ph.D. from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (1993–1996). His research interests include the chemistry of photo-induced C–H bond transformation, controlled radical polymerization, surface and interfacial chemistry of organic materials, fabricating bio-chips and encapsulating enzymes, and the surface and interfacial chemistry of inorganic and organic materials. Feng Shi obtained his B.Sc. (2001) and M.Sc. (2004) from Jilin University, and Ph.D. (2007) from Tsinghua University. He completed postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in 2008 and has worked as a professor at BUCT since 2008. He has been the dean's assistant of CMSE and vice-director of the Department of Functional Organic Materials. His research interest is macroscopic supramolecular assembly and its applications.
