Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical elements into ultrathin devices. In this study, a nanoscale tunable beam splitter utilizing a bilayer of geometric metasurfaces in the visible spectrum is proposed and numerically examined. Inspired by the diffractive Alvarez lens and multilayer geometric metasurfaces, opposite quadratic phase distributions are imparted on both layers, and a varying linear phase gradient will arise through relatively lateral displacement between two layers, generating tunable angles of deflection. In addition, such geometric metasurfaces offer opposite directions of phase gradients for orthogonal circularly polarized incidences, leading to effective polarization beam splitting. Results prove that the splitting angles can be tuned precisely, and the energy split ratio can be effectively changed according to the ellipticity of the polarized incidence. This design could find significant applications in optical communication, measurement, display, and so on.
Broadband Terahertz Multi-Beam Splitters with Uniform Power Distribution Based on Coding Metasurfaces

Abstract:High efficiency, uniform power distribution, and broadband working of beam splitters are of crucial importance for large format heterodyne array receivers at terahertz frequencies. We present two types of quad-beam splitters (QBSs) based on coding metamaterials, designed to generate 1 x 4 and 2 x 2 beams respectively in the THz range. The designed metasurfaces are composed of a periodic array of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) scattering unit cells, thus introducing a well-designed phase shift in the electromagnetic wave. For normally incident electromagnetic waves, the simulation results show that the 2 x 2 QBS has higher power efficiency and broader bandwidth in comparison with the 1 x 4 QBS. The 2 x 2 QBS works well in that the power efficiency is larger than 70% and the power distribution difference of the main beams is less than 2.8% in the range of 0.75-1.35 THz, which indicates an ultra-broad frequency range up to 57.1%. Meanwhile, under oblique incidence, the power distribution and the power efficiency among the 2 x 2 quad-beam nearly remain stable when the wave incident is within 40-degree. A prototype is fabricated and the 2 x 2 QBS behavior is experimentally demonstrated at 0.85 THz, where the power efficiency is as high as 70.4% and the power distribution of each beam approximately is uniform under the 20-degree incidence. To further improve the efficiency of astronomical observations, a 36-beam splitter is designed by using a simple two-dimensional addition method, and the power efficiency can reach 89.9% at 0.85 THz, and the working bandwidth is 57.1% from 0.75 to 1.35 THz with evenly distributed main beams. The simulation results show that the beam splitting function can also be well realized under the waves with 20-degree oblique incidence. Compared to conventional Fourier phase gratings, the metasurface-based beam splitters provide broadband performance and a simpler fabrication process, which is very expected in compact heterodyne array receiver systems.
A Broadband Dual-Polarized Reflective Metasurface for THz OAM Communication

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) beams with abundant spectrum resources and low beam divergence can be combined with orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams characterized by orthogonal propagation to multifold the capacity of wireless communication systems. However, in order to support the explosive growth of massive communication data traffic, THz OAM must be further enhanced with other multiplexing technologies. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new multifunctional devices. In this article, we propose a novel broadband dual-polarized reflective metasurface, which can generate two coaxially propagating OAM beams with distinct modes for each polarization. Because of the geometric symmetry, the metasurface shows the same electromagnetic response with respect to both x -and y -polarized waves, thus possessing the dual-polarized property. Simulated and measured results verify that the metasurface can realize the incorporation of OAM multiplexing and polarization multiplexing in a broad frequency range of 90–110 GHz. The crosstalks from other OAM modes and polarizations are lower than $-$ 16 dB and $-$ 21 dB, respectively. Based on the metasurface, a THz wireless communication system was demonstrated by multiplexing four independent OAM beams with each channel carrying a 6-Gbaud quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) signal, so that an aggregate 48 Gbit/s data transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 was achieved. This work verifies the feasibility of metasurface for multidimensional multiplexing in the THz region, meaning the metasurface may serve as a promising candidate for ultrahigh speed THz communication systems.
A THz-OAM Multi-Beam Antenna Based on Multilayer Transmissive Metasurface

Abstract:A terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) multi-beam antenna based on a multilayer transmissive metasurface is proposed in this paper. The transmissive units with uniform insertion loss and phase shift of 2π are designed firstly, then the design principle of the antenna that can generate multi beams is studied. The designed antenna can simultaneously generate two OAM beams with different propagation directions and modes under illumination by a Gaussian beam at 100 GHz. The simulation results show a good agreement with the theoretical design, and the mode purities of the generated OAM beams could exceed 96%.

Abstract:Terahertz beam splitters and polarization rotators are two typical devices with wide applications ranging from terahertz communication to system integration. However, they are faced with severe challenges in manipulating THz waves in multiple channels, which is desirable for system integration and device miniaturization. Here, we propose a method to design ultra-thin multi-channel THz beam splitters and polarization rotators simultaneously. The reflected beams are divided into four beams with nearly the same density under illumination of linear-polarized THz waves, while the polarization of reflected beams in each channel is modulated with a rotation angle or invariable with respect to the incident THz waves, leading to the multi-channel polarization rotator (multiple polarization rotation in the reflective channels) and beam splitter, respectively. Reflective metasurfaces, created by patterning metal-rods with different orientations on a polyimide film, were fabricated and measured to demonstrate these characteristics. The proposed approach provides an efficient way of controlling polarization of THz waves in various channels, which significantly simplifies THz functional devices and the experimental system.
Reconfigurable Metasurface for Beamforming in Terahertz Band

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) beamforming technology has broad and prospective applications in many emerging applications. In this paper, a reconfigurable metasurface consisting of double rings on two plates is proposed to realize beamforming in THz band. Firstly, design principle is analyzed. Then, numerical simulation based on angular spectrum theory is conducted to verify the correctness, and a double-ring metasurface constructed by dielectric cuboid columns with varying height is designed and full wave simulation is performed. In all, the proposed metasurface provides a cheap and tractable scheme for THz beamforming, which is suitable for practical applications in THz band, such as high-speed wireless communication, augmented human sense, autonomous driving and so on.

Abstract:Combining Terahertz (THz) and Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) technologies has great potential in high-speed wireless communication. Theoretically, OAM with different modes has strict orthogonality. The communication capacity of the system will improve significantly if OAM technology is applied to the THz communication system. Thus, the manner to generate a high-quality and dynamically controllable THz-OAM beam has been of significant interest to researchers in related fields. In this study, a double-layer transmissive metasurface that uses 3D printing as the processing method with a low cost and processing difficulty is designed. Note that the height of the unit cell for constructing the metasurface is configurable. As the height changes continuously, the phase of the transmitted wave covers 0～2\begin{document}${\pi }$\end{document} within 90~110 GHz, while the transmittance of the units is always higher than 88%. At 100 GHz, which is fed by a WR-10 standard waveguide horn antenna, OAM beams with different modes are generated by changing the relative rotation angle between the double-layer metasurface. The simulation results show that the metasurface antenna designed in this study can achieve OAM beams of \begin{document}$ l=1, \mathrm{2,3} $\end{document}, and the two-dimensional amplitude and phase results correspond with the characteristics of the corresponding modes. When \begin{document}$ l=1,\mathrm{ }2,\mathrm{ }3 $\end{document}, the OAM beam’s modal purity is 85.4%, 84.9%, and 83.4%, respectively. The measurement results include the results at frequency points of 90, 100, and 110 GHz. The results show that the OAM beam has a high-quality bandwidth of 20 GHz, which indicates that the metasurface antenna designed in this study has a wide working bandwidth at a high frequency and can be applied to high-frequency OAM communication.

Abstract:A method to design the metasurface‐based splitter with dual beams which have different power distributions, polarizations, and radiated angles is proposed. The presented metasurface is ultrathin which is only 0.12λ and the whole unit cell is mainly composed of receiving antenna with single‐polarization, power divider, dual‐channel phase shifter with independent control and transmitting antenna with dual‐polarization. According to the functional requirements of the beam splitter, the main components which are power divider and phase shifter can be artificially tailored correspondingly. And the fixed design of receiving and transmitting antennas can receive the incident electromagnetic (EM) wave with single‐polarization and transmit the EM wave with dual‐polarization, respectively. Comparing with conventional cascaded transmitarray and bulk lens, the design logic of proposed whole splitter is very clear that scanning and optimizing massive parameters of unit cells for satisfying the demands of polarization, transmission phase, and power distribution simultaneously is not needed. The good consistent results of experiment and simulation can verify the validity of our design. A method for designing the metasurface‐based splitter with dual beams which have different power distributions, polarizations, and radiated angles is proposed. Abstract:<p>Beam splitters are key photonic devices with wide applications in optical communication, interferometers, and spectroscopy. With the increasing demand for miniaturized and lightweight optical system, designing compact beam splitters becomes very important. However, current beam splitters based on cubes or plates are generally bulky and not suitable for integration. Here, a type of broadband multi-channel miniature beam splitters based on gradient metasurfaces in the visible wavelength is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The metasurface is composed of low loss TiO<sub>2</sub> nanocylinder and phase gradients in multiple directions are introduced to realize multi-channel beam splitting of the incident beam. Different metasurfaces with three, four, and five splitting channels are designed and numerically demonstrated. Moreover, a wide working band from 500 nm to 600 nm of beam splitter with high splitting efficiency is demonstrated, which agrees with the generalized Snell's law. The proposed multi-channel beam splitters may have potential applications in miniaturization of optical systems such as interferometers and spectroscopy.</p>

Design of Transmissive Terahertz Beam Splitter based on Phase Gradient Metasurface

Abstract:In this paper, we present a bi-directional beam splitter and a four-directional beam splitter made of the phase gradient metasurface. The unit cells are composed of two L-shaped metallic layers, and which are sandwiched by dielectric layer between them. By especially designing the arm length and width of the L-shaped unit and arranging them according to the Berry phase principle, th phase variation of $0\sim 2\pi$ has been obtained. A $12^{\ast}12$ bi-directional beam splitter and a $16^{\ast}16$ four-directional beam splitter are formed by periodic arrangement of such unit cells. When the splitter is vertically incident by linear polarized plane wave at 100 GHz, the deflection angle is about 30°, which shows consistency with the theoretical design. Compared with the traditional beam splitters designed with prisms and interference gratings, these two beam splitters have the advantages of low profile, compact, and ease to be loaded into micro-nano optical devices.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are artificial electromagnetic surfaces that consist of subwavelength scatterers in an array configuration, exhibiting exceptional abilities to manipulate electromagnetic waves. Based on the metasurface concept, a novel beam splitter for a single-frequency same-polarization light is proposed in the visible spectrum. Using metal–dielectric–metal (MDM) scattering unit cells, an array of the circular gold nanocylinders with two different diameters is designed and fabricated on the surface which introduces phase discontinuity on the scattering wavefronts. At 240 nm thick, the flat beam splitter can efficiently reflect an incident wave toward two predesigned directions. More importantly, the split angle and power distribution between these two beams can be readily controlled by setting a proper incident angle. Compared to conventional bulky optical components, the ability of this metasurface-based beam splitter would be very desirable in integrated optical systems.
Transmission-type terahertz beam splitter through all-dielectric metasurface

Abstract:Abstract Traditional metal metasurfaces have inherent non radiative losses. In this paper, an all dielectric metasurface is proposed, which can flexibly manipulate the terahertz wave high-efficiency abnormal refraction, beam splitting and orbital angular momentum beam generation. Four kinds of elements are designed to meet the transmission phase at 0.94 THz and the phase difference is about 90°. The 2-bit coding metasurfaces are formed by periodic arrangement of these four coding units along the x -direction, and the different transmission angles can be obtained. Then two coding units with a phase difference of 180° are selected and arranged according to the requirements to achieve beam splitting effect. Finally, the coding units are arranged according to different spiral sample coding sequences to generate single and double vortex beams. It is proved that the near-field distribution and far-field scattering patterns extracted from the full wave simulation are in good agreement with the theoretical results under vertical incidence of the transverse electric-mode terahertz wave. This design provides an effective way to manipulate electromagnetic waves with high efficiency.

Abstract:Generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by vortex beams in a broad bandwidth is imperative for communication systems. In this paper, we proposed a low-profile and wide-band metasurface to generate high-purity vortex beams by combining the polarization converter and the resonant phase. In addition, it is applicable for Linearly Polarized (LP) incident wave and Circularly Polarized (CP) incident wave. The metasurface consisting of 10 × 10 elements is used to generate vortex beam with mode l = 1. Simulation results at 15 GHz verify the feasibility of this method, which paves a new way for generating vortex beams.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a dual-polarization ultra-wideband metasurface with half-reflection and half-transmission based on a double-split-ring (DSR) structure operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The designed metasurface enables simultaneous control of circularly polarized (CP) and linearly polarized (LP) waves in both the reflection and transmission modes, covering an extensive THz frequency range. The unit-cell architecture of the metasurface consists of a periodic arrangement of the DSR structure made of metal, which is affixed to an ultra-thin dielectric substrate. By manipulating the size and rotation direction of the DSR structure, we achieve full phase coverage of 0-2π of the orthogonally polarized LP and CP waves across the frequency span of 0.3-1.2 THz, encompassing both transmission and reflection scenarios. The relative bandwidths of the orthogonal LP and CP waves for both reflection and transmission are significantly wide, reaching 86% and 120%, respectively, with an average amplitude of 0.45. Specifically, through numerical simulations, we demonstrated that the designed metasurfaces have ability to achieve THz beam deflection and vortex beam generation with simultaneously reflection and transmission for LP and CP waves. The proposed dual-polarization ultra-wideband metasurface holds great promise for various applications in the terahertz frequency range. These findings pave the way for the development of flexible and versatile THz devices with expanded capabilities, opening up new possibilities for wavefront manipulation in metasurfaces.

Abstract:With the development of various emerging technologies, the capacity of current wireless communication system is gradually saturated, and terahertz (THz) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) have hereby attracted much attention as two key technologies to increase the communication capacity. In this article, a THz-OAM wireless communication system operating at 100 GHz based on a transmissive metasurface is proposed for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The operation principle of multiplexing metasurface, which allows simultaneous generation of two coaxial OAM beams at different modes of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\boldsymbol {l}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> = 1 and −1, is studied. To meet the requirements of wireless communication and OAM multiplexing, a C-shaped transmissive unit is designed with characteristics of broad bandwidth, low transmission loss, and insensitive to the change of incident angle. Experimental measurements show that the generated two OAM beams feature high mode purity, providing the excellent orthogonality of modes. The generated two OAM modes are also employed as two OAM channels to transmit two independent communication signals with ON–OFF keying (OOK) modulation, and a data rate of 10 Gbit/s is achieved at a transmission distance of 300 mm ( <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$100\boldsymbol {\lambda }$ </tex-math></inline-formula> of 100 GHz) with bit error rates (BERs) below <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$3.8\,\,\boldsymbol {\times }\,\,\boldsymbol {10^{-3}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . Abstract:Terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams have tremendous potential for tackling the capacity crunch in high-speed wireless communication. However, conventional OAM beams suffer from the limitations of beam divergence and stringent alignment requirements in practical wireless communications. To cope with the challenge, we propose a broadband Huygens' transmissive metasurface for the manipulation of non-diffractive OAM beams operating at 0.1 THz, which has the advantages of low profile, simplicity, and ease of fabrication. By virtue of its flexible phase control capability, the metasurface using a combination of hyperbolic phase, OAM phase, and axicon phase is proposed to multiplex two high-order Bessel beams. Both simulation and measurement results indicate that it generates non-diffractive OAM beams with high purity over a broad bandwidth of 20 GHz. Based on the metasurface, a 112-Gbit/s photonic THz wireless communication link using two non-diffractive OAM beams, with each channel carrying a 14-Gbaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal, is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. The communication performance of high-order Bessel beams is compared with the conventional OAM beams, and it is found that these high-order Bessel beams are more preferable to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) owing to the more stable field distribution. This work provides an effective way to alleviate the diffractive divergence of the OAM waves and extend the achievable link distance in wireless THz OAM communication systems, opening new opportunities for high data rate wireless communications.

Abstract:Metasurface-based beam splitters attracted huge interest for their superior properties compared with conventional ones made of bulk materials. The previously reported designs adopted discrete metasurfaces with the limitation of a discontinuous phase profile. In this paper, we propose a dual-band beam splitter, based on an anisotropic quasi-continuous metasurface, by exploring the optical responses under x-polarized (with an electric field parallel to the direction of the phase gradient) and y-polarized incidences. The adopted metasurface consists of two identical trapezoidal silicon antenna arrays with opposite spatial variations that lead to opposite phase gradients. The operational window of the proposed beam splitter falls in the infrared and visible region, respectively, for x- and y-polarized light, resulting from the different mechanisms. When x-polarized light is incident, the conversion efficiency and total transmission of the beam splitter remains higher than 90% and 0.74 within the wavelength range from 969 nm to 1054 nm, respectively. In this condition, each array can act as a beam splitter of unequal power. For y-polarized incidence, the maximum conversion efficiency and transmission reach approximately 100% and 0.85, while the values remain higher than 90% and 0.65 in the wavelength range from 687 nm to 710 nm, respectively. In this case, each array can be viewed as an effective beam deflector. We anticipate that it can play a key role in future integrated optical devices.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of beam splitting, we propose an all-dielectric metasurface for efficient beam splitting. When designing metasurface splitters, most of the research focuses on constructing devices using discrete element structures. However, the interaction between discrete elements leads to change on the phase distribution. Here, we propose a continuously distributed trapezoidal structure with phase gradient metasurface and use it to function as a terahertz wave splitter. The structure is much simpler than conventional metasurfaces based on arrays of discrete nanoantennas. We designed a series of beam splitters to achieve a deflection angle of 15°∼30° by adjusting the dimensions of the trapezoidal resonator. We further experimentally prepared the continuous phase gradient trapezoidal structures and measured their far-field scattering properties. Terahertz beam splitters are one typical device with wide applications ranging from terahertz communication to system integration, such as the spectroscopy, sensing, high-speed data transmission, terahertz imaging, soft ablation, optical discharge, and many others fields.

Abstract:Author(s): Zhang Hong-Wei, Cai Ren-Hao, Li Ji-Ning, Zhong Kai, Wang Yu-Ye, Xu De-Gang, Yao Jian-Quan The multi-mode composite imaging technology integrates the advantages of different sensors, and thus has the advantages of high image quality, strong information acquisition capability, high target detection and recognition ability, strong adaptability to complex environments, and high stability and robustness of the system. Among them, the terahertz and infrared composite imaging technology combines the characteristics of terahertz band and infrared band, has the advantages of wide spectrum coverage, high resolution and strong penetration, and has broad application prospects. As one of the key components of the common aperture composite imaging system, the efficient optical splitters in terahertz and infrared band are still lacking at present, and their performance needs to be improved urgently. In this paper, a kind of dichroic metasurface with a simple structure and high performance is proposed by combining simulation experiment and theoretical explanation. When used as a spectroscopic device at an incident angle of 45°, it achieves a transmission coefficient greater than 97% near the center frequency of 1.1 THz, and a reflection coefficient greater than 98% in a wavelength range of 3–5 μm for medium-wave infrared and 8–14 μm for long-wave infrared. The design has good robustness to structural mismatches and machining errors such as structural misalignment, structural fillet, small magnification scaling, and polarization insensitivity. When the incident angle changes in a range of 0–60°, the device still maintains excellent spectral characteristics. In this paper, based on Babinet theorem and equivalent circuit model, the electromagnetic response characteristics of the metasurface are analyzed theoretically, and the analysis results are in agreement with the simulation results. The results of this study prove the feasibility of metasurface as a spectral device in the multiwavelength composite imaging system of terahertz and infrared bands, and provide support for future studying new composite imaging detection technology. In addition, the metasurface structure described in this paper has broad application prospects in many fields such as multi-band infrared stealth, laser and pump light separation in lasers, and provides a valuable reference for designing terahertz and infrared spectroscopy in various scenarios. Abstract:In terahertz (THz) wireless communication systems, non-diffraction vortex beams carrying an orbital angular momentum (OAM) have attracted extensive attention due to their ability to transmit information over long distances with high capacity. However, existing metasurfaces can only generate a single OAM mode non-diffracting vortex beam at reflection space for circular polarization (CP) incidence, limiting practical applications. To address this issue, we propose and design a polarization-frequency multiplexing transmissive THz metasurface to realize multi-mode non-diffracting vortex beams at linear polarization (LP) incidence. The meta-atom of this metasurface is composed of three anisotropic rectangular metallic structures embedded in vanadium dioxide (VO2) square rings, two circular aperture metallic grid layers, and four dielectric layers. By reasonably designing the size of the metal patch and the state of VO2, the designed metasurface can achieve polarization multiplexing and frequency multiplexing for LP incidence. Based on the phase response of the proposed meta-atoms, the transmissive metasurface can implement not only multi-mode non-diffraction vortex beams but also their space separation at two frequency ranges of 0.80–0.90 THz and 1.50–1.80 THz by changing the state of VO2. Therefore, the proposed multiple multiplexing metasurfaces can effectively shape the wavefront of non-diffraction vortex beams, which have broad application prospects in 6G THz communication.
