Abstract:We introduce a large class of contractive mappings, called Suzuki Berinde type contraction. We show that any Suzuki Berinde type contraction has a fixed point and characterizes the completeness of the underlying normed space. A fixed point theorem for multivalued mapping is also obtained. These results unify, generalize and complement various known comparable results in the literature.

Abstract:The notions of modular b-metric and modular b-metric space were introduced by Ege and Alaca as natural generalizations of the well-known and featured concepts of modular metric and modular metric space presented and discussed by Chistyakov. In particular, they stated generalized forms of Banach's contraction principle for this new class of spaces thus initiating the study of the fixed point theory for these structures, where other authors have also made extensive contributions. In this paper we endow the modular b-metrics with a metrizable topology that supplies a firm endorsement of the idea of convergence proposed by Ege and Alaca in their article. Moreover, for a large class of modular b-metric spaces, we formulate this topology in terms of an explicitly defined b-metric, which extends both an important metrization theorem due to Chistyakov as well as the so-called topology of metric convergence. This approach allows us to characterize the completeness for this class of modular b-metric spaces that may be viewed as an offsetting of the celebrated Caristi–Kirk theorem to our context. We also include some examples that endorse our results.

A dilation theoretic approach to Banach spaces

Abstract:For a complex Banach space $\mathbb X$, we prove that $\mathbb X$ is a Hilbert space if and only if every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ dilates to an isometry if and only if for every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ the function $A_T: \mathbb X \rightarrow [0, \infty]$ defined by $A_T(x)=(\|x\|^2 -\|Tx\|^2)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ gives a norm on $\mathbb X$. We also find several other necessary and sufficient conditions in this thread such that a Banach sapce becomes a Hilbert space. We construct examples of strict contractions on non-Hilbert Banach spaces that do not dilate to isometries. Then we characterize all strict contractions on a non-Hilbert Banach space that dilate to isometries and find explicit isometric dilation for them. We prove several other results including characterizations of complemented subspaces in a Banach space, extension of a Wold isometry to a Banach space unitary and describing norm attainment sets of Banach space operators in terms of dilations.

Abstract:We obtain results on the existence and approximation of fixed points of enriched contractions in quasi-Banach spaces and thus extend the results obtained in the case of contractions defined on Banach spaces [Berinde, V.; Păcurar, M. Approximating fixed points of enriched contractions in Banach spaces. J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 22 (2020), no. 2, Paper No. 38, 10 pp.]. We illustrate the obtained theoretical results by providing an example of an enriched contraction in a quasi-Banach space which is not a Banach space to show that our new results are effective generalizations of the previous ones in literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of common fixed point of tower type contractive mappings in complete metric (pseudo)modular spaces involving the theoretic relation. However, the newly introduced contraction in this paper further characterize and includes in their full strength several existing results in metrical fixed point theory. Some nontrivial supportive examples were given to justify our result. Our results generalize, improve, and unify some existing results.

Abstract:Kannan contraction is broadly investigated topic in Metric Fixed Point Theory due to its importance in omitting the continuity presumption. Of a great significance is also its role in characterizing completeness of a metric space through existence and uniqueness of a fixed point of arbitrary Kannan contraction in the observed setting. The concept of Kannan contraction has been adapted, extended and transferred to various types of spaces including cone metric spaces, quasi metric spaces, b -metric spaces, partial metric spaces, among others. The main aim of this article is to prove that for any Kannan contraction T on a complete metric space ( X , d ) there exists another metric on the set X in relation to which T is a Banach contraction while the completeness is preserved. In that way, all results on Kannan contraction may be derived as corollaries of the Banach contraction principle. The converse also holds since, by altering the metric, Banach contraction becomes a Kannan contraction. The obtained theoretical results are substantiated with adequate examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study some elementary properties of a typical positive contraction on $\ell_q$ for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. Using these properties we prove that a typical positive contraction on $\ell_1$ (resp. on $\ell_2$) has a non-trivial invariant subspace for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology). We then focus on the case where $X$ is a Banach space with a basis. We prove that a typical positive contraction on a Banach space with an unconditional basis has no non-trivial closed invariant ideals for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. In particular this shows that when $X = \ell_q$ with $1 \leq q < \infty$, a typical positive contraction $T$ on $X$ for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong* Operator Topology when $1 < q < \infty$) does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion, that is there is no non-zero positive operator in the commutant of $T$ which is quasinilpotent at a non-zero positive vector of $X$. Finally we prove that, for the Strong* Operator Topology, a typical positive contraction on a reflexive Banach space with a monotone basis does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion.

Abstract:With a proper metrizability approach that preserves completeness of a metric space, Hardy–Rogers contraction may be observed as a Banach contraction. Consequently, the same conclusion holds for Kannan, Reich and Chatterjea contractions along with several their modifications. Theoretical results are substantiated with several examples which additionally validate the independence between some contractive conditions. Rate and factor of convergence of iterative process in a newly defined metric space is studied along with a numerical example claiming a slight advantage of the proposed approach.

In so doing, they wish to answer a question proposed by Kirk and Shahzad about Nadler's theorem holding in strong b-metric spaces. In addition, they offer an improvement to the fixed-point theorem proven by Dontchev and Hager.

Abstract:In the present paper we study majorizable operators acting on Banach-Kantorovich $L_p$-lattices, constructed by a measure $m$ with values in the ring of all measurable functions. Then using methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices, we prove the strong "zero-two" law for positive contractions of the Banach-Kantorovich $L_p$-lattices.

Abstract:Let the complex reflection group $G(m,p,n)$ act on the unit polydisc $\mathbb D^n$ in $\mathbb C^n.$ A $\boldsymbol\Theta_n$-contraction is a commuting tuple of operators on a Hilbert space having $$\overline{\boldsymbol\Theta}_n:=\{\boldsymbol\theta(z)=(\theta_1(z),\ldots,\theta_n(z)):z\in\overline{\mathbb D}^n\}$$ as a spectral set, where $\{\theta_i\}_{i=1}^n$ is a homogeneous system of parameters associated to $G(m,p,n).$ A plethora of examples of $\boldsymbol\Theta_n$-contractions is exhibited. Under a mild hypothesis, it is shown that these $\boldsymbol\Theta_n$-contractions are mutually unitarily inequivalent. These inequivalence results are obtained concretely for the weighted Bergman modules under the action of the permutation groups and the dihedral groups. The division problem is shown to have negative answers for the Hardy module and the Bergman module on the bidisc. A Beurling-Lax-Halmos type representation for the invariant subspaces of $\boldsymbol\Theta_n$-isometries is obtained.

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Abstract:The de Branges--Rovnyak spaces are known to provide an alternate functional model for contractions on a Hilbert space, equivalent to the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model. The scalar de Branges--Rovnyak spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ have essentially different properties, according to whether the defining function $b$ is or not extreme in the unit ball of $H^\infty$. For $b$ extreme the model space is just $\mathcal{H}(b)$, while for $b$ nonextreme an additional construction is required. In the present paper we identify the precise class of contractions which have as a model $\mathcal{H}(b)$ with $b$ nonextreme.

Abstract:Banach contraction principle is one of the earlier and main results in fixed point theory. Banach contraction principle which guarantees existence and uniqueness of fixed point was proved in complete metric spaces in 1922 by Banach. According to this principle, "let ( X , d ) be a complete metric space and f : X → X be a mapping. If there exists a constant 0 ≤ k < 1 such that for all x , y ∈ X , d ( f x , f y ) ≤ k . d ( x , y ), then f has a unique fixed point".
