Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.
On the relation of Kannan contraction and Banach contraction

Abstract:Kannan contraction is broadly investigated topic in Metric Fixed Point Theory due to its importance in omitting the continuity presumption. Of a great significance is also its role in characterizing completeness of a metric space through existence and uniqueness of a fixed point of arbitrary Kannan contraction in the observed setting. The concept of Kannan contraction has been adapted, extended and transferred to various types of spaces including cone metric spaces, quasi metric spaces, b -metric spaces, partial metric spaces, among others. The main aim of this article is to prove that for any Kannan contraction T on a complete metric space ( X , d ) there exists another metric on the set X in relation to which T is a Banach contraction while the completeness is preserved. In that way, all results on Kannan contraction may be derived as corollaries of the Banach contraction principle. The converse also holds since, by altering the metric, Banach contraction becomes a Kannan contraction. The obtained theoretical results are substantiated with adequate examples.

Abstract:We study the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of metric pairs and metric tuples and prove the equivalence of different natural definitions of this concept. We also prove embedding, completeness and compactness theorems in this setting. Finally, we get a relative version of Fukaya's theorem about quotient spaces under Gromov--Hausdorff equivariant convergence and a version of Grove-Petersen--Wu's finiteness theorem for stratified spaces.

Existence and approximation of fixed points of enriched contractions in quasi-Banach spaces

Abstract:We obtain results on the existence and approximation of fixed points of enriched contractions in quasi-Banach spaces and thus extend the results obtained in the case of contractions defined on Banach spaces [Berinde, V.; Păcurar, M. Approximating fixed points of enriched contractions in Banach spaces. J. Fixed Point Theory Appl. 22 (2020), no. 2, Paper No. 38, 10 pp.]. We illustrate the obtained theoretical results by providing an example of an enriched contraction in a quasi-Banach space which is not a Banach space to show that our new results are effective generalizations of the previous ones in literature.

Abstract:Paszkiewicz's conjecture asserts that given a decreasing sequence $T_1\ge T_2\ge \dots$ of positive contractions on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$, the product $S_n=T_nT_{n-1}\cdots T_1$ converges in the strong operator topology. In these notes, we give an equivalent, more precise formulation of his conjecture. Moreover, we show that the conjecture is true for the following two cases: (1) $1$ is not in the essential spectrum of $T_n$ for some $n\in \mathbb{N}$. (2) The von Neumann algebra generated by $\{T_n\mid n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ admits a faithful normal tracial state. We also remark that the analogous conjecture for the weak convergence is true.

Abstract:Caffarelli's contraction theorem states that probability measures with uniformly logconcave densities on R d can be realized as the image of a standard Gaussian measure by a globally Lipschitz transport map. We discuss some counterexamples and obstructions that prevent a similar result from holding on the half-sphere endowed with a uniform measure, answering a question of Beck and Jerison.

Abstract:Since the topological properties of a b-metric space (which generalizes the concept of a metric space) seem sometimes counterintuitive due to the fact that the "open" balls may not be open sets, we review some aspects of these spaces concerning compactness, metrizability, continuity and fixed points. After doing so, we introduce new types of contractivities that extend the concept of Banach contraction. We study some of their properties, giving sufficient conditions for the existence of fixed points and common fixed points. Afterwards, we consider some iterative schemes in quasi-normed spaces for the approximation of these critical points, analyzing their convergence and stability. We apply these concepts to the resolution of a model of integral equation of Urysohn type. In the last part of the paper, we refine some results about partial contractivities in the case where the underlying set is a strong b-metric space, and we establish some relations between mutual weak contractions and quasi-contractions and the new type of contractivity.

Abstract:We have studied homeomorphisms that satisfy the Poletsky-type inverse inequality in the domain of the Euclidean space. It is proved that the uniform limit of the family of such homeomorphisms is either a homeomorphism into the Euclidean space, or a constant in the extended Euclidean space.

Abstract:For a complex Banach space $\mathbb X$, we prove that $\mathbb X$ is a Hilbert space if and only if every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ dilates to an isometry if and only if for every strict contraction $T$ on $\mathbb X$ the function $A_T: \mathbb X \rightarrow [0, \infty]$ defined by $A_T(x)=(\|x\|^2 -\|Tx\|^2)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ gives a norm on $\mathbb X$. We also find several other necessary and sufficient conditions in this thread such that a Banach sapce becomes a Hilbert space. We construct examples of strict contractions on non-Hilbert Banach spaces that do not dilate to isometries. Then we characterize all strict contractions on a non-Hilbert Banach space that dilate to isometries and find explicit isometric dilation for them. We prove several other results including characterizations of complemented subspaces in a Banach space, extension of a Wold isometry to a Banach space unitary and describing norm attainment sets of Banach space operators in terms of dilations.

Lower semicontinuity of monotone functionals in the mixed topology on $C_b$

Abstract:The main result of this paper characterizes the continuity from below of monotone functionals on the space $C_b$ of bounded continuous functions on an arbitrary Polish space as lower semicontinuity in the mixed topology. In this particular situation, the mixed topology coincides with the Mackey topology for the dual pair $(C_b,{\rm ca})$, where ${\rm ca}$ denotes the space of all countably additive signed Borel measures of finite variation. Hence, lower semicontinuity in the mixed topology of convex monotone maps $C_b\to \mathbb R$ is equivalent to a dual representation in terms of countably additive measures. Such representations are of fundamental importance in finance, e.g., in the context of risk measures and super hedging problems. Based on the main result, regularity properties of capacities and dual representations of Choquet integrals in terms of countably additive measures for $2$-alternating capacities are studied. In a second step, the paper provides a characterization of equicontinuity in the mixed topology for families of convex monotone maps. As a consequence, for every convex monotone map on $C_b$ taking values in a locally convex vector lattice, continuity in the mixed topology is equivalent to continuity on norm bounded sets.

Abstract:In this paper, we indicate a way to generalize a series of fixed point results in the framework of b-metric spaces and we exemplify it by extending Nadler’s contraction principle for set-valued functions (see Nadler, Pac J Math 30:475–488, 1969) and a fixed point theorem for set-valued quasi-contraction functions due to Aydi et al. (see Fixed Point Theory Appl 2012:88, 2012).

Relative weak compactness in infinite-dimensional Fefferman-Meyer duality

Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space such that $E'$ has the Radon-Nikodým property. The aim of this work is to connect relative weak compactness in the $E$-valued martingale Hardy space $H^{1}(\mu,E)$ to a convex compactness criterion in a weaker topology, such as the topology of uniform convergence on compacts in measure. These results represent a dynamic version of the deep result of Diestel, Ruess, and Schachermayer on relative weak compactness in $L^{1}(\mu,E)$. In the reflexive case, we obtain a Kadec-Pełczyński dichotomy for $H^{1}(\mu,E)$-bounded sequences, which decomposes a subsequence into a relatively weakly compact part, a pointwise weakly convexly convergent part, and a null part converging to zero uniformly on compacts in measure. As a corollary, we investigate a parameterized version of the vector-valued Komlós theorem without the assumption of $H^{1}(\mu,E)$-boundedness.

Abstract:We introduce a large class of contractive mappings, called Suzuki Berinde type contraction. We show that any Suzuki Berinde type contraction has a fixed point and characterizes the completeness of the underlying normed space. A fixed point theorem for multivalued mapping is also obtained. These results unify, generalize and complement various known comparable results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study some elementary properties of a typical positive contraction on $\ell_q$ for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. Using these properties we prove that a typical positive contraction on $\ell_1$ (resp. on $\ell_2$) has a non-trivial invariant subspace for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology). We then focus on the case where $X$ is a Banach space with a basis. We prove that a typical positive contraction on a Banach space with an unconditional basis has no non-trivial closed invariant ideals for the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong* Operator Topology. In particular this shows that when $X = \ell_q$ with $1 \leq q < \infty$, a typical positive contraction $T$ on $X$ for the Strong Operator Topology (resp. for the Strong* Operator Topology when $1 < q < \infty$) does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion, that is there is no non-zero positive operator in the commutant of $T$ which is quasinilpotent at a non-zero positive vector of $X$. Finally we prove that, for the Strong* Operator Topology, a typical positive contraction on a reflexive Banach space with a monotone basis does not satisfy the Abramovich, Aliprantis and Burkinshaw criterion.

Abstract:Consider a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ endowed with the metric $d$. We introduce a novel function as $\overline{BF}(x, y) = \limsup_{n-m \rightarrow +\infty} \inf_{\sigma \in S_{n,m}} \frac{1}{n-m} \sum_{k=m}^{n-1} d\left(T^{k} x, T^{\sigma(k)} y\right)$, where the permutation group $S_{n,m}$ is utilized. It is demonstrated that $BF(x, y)$ exists when $x, y \in X$ are uniformly generic points. Leveraging this function, we introduce the concept of weak Banach mean equicontinuity and establish that the dynamical system $(X, T)$ exhibits weak Banach mean equicontinuity if and only if the uniform time averages $f_B^{*}(x) = \lim_{n-m \rightarrow +\infty} \frac{1}{n-m} \sum_{k=m}^{n-1} f\left(T^{k} x\right)$ are continuous for all $f \in C(X)$. Finally, we demonstrate that in the case of a transitive system, the equivalence between weak Banach mean equicontinuity and weak mean equicontinuity is established.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce two multivalued contractive mappings within the framework of Hausdorff controlled metric spaces, employing concepts of admissibility and C ‐class functions. The first mapping is a (β∗,ζ) ‐generalized contractive multivalued mapping, and the second is a (β,W(ζ,ξ)) ‐multivalued mapping. We establish conditions guaranteeing the existence of fixed points for these mappings. To support our theoretical findings, we provide a numerical example, demonstrating the independence of the contractive conditions for the mappings. Furthermore, we apply our results to a specific problem in polynomial equations. These findings complement several existing results in the literature.

Abstract:In recent times there have been two prominent trends in metric fixed point theory. One is the use of weak contractive inequalities and the other is the use of binary relations. Combining the two trends, in this paper we establish a relation-theoretic fixed point result for a mapping which is defined on a metric space with an arbitrary binary relation and satisfies a weak contractive inequality for any pair of points whenever the pair of points is related by a given relation. The uniqueness is obtained by assuming some extra conditions. The metric space is assumed to be R -complete. We use R -continuity of functions. The property of local T-transitivity of the relation R is used in the main theorem. There is an illustrative example. An existing fixed point result is generalized through the present work. We use a method in the proof of our main theorem which is a blending of relation-theoretic and analytic approaches.

Abstract:With a proper metrizability approach that preserves completeness of a metric space, Hardy–Rogers contraction may be observed as a Banach contraction. Consequently, the same conclusion holds for Kannan, Reich and Chatterjea contractions along with several their modifications. Theoretical results are substantiated with several examples which additionally validate the independence between some contractive conditions. Rate and factor of convergence of iterative process in a newly defined metric space is studied along with a numerical example claiming a slight advantage of the proposed approach.

Abstract:The contraction condition in the Banach contraction principle forces a function to be continuous. Many authors overcome this obligation and weaken the hypotheses via metric spaces endowed with a partial order. In this paper, we present some coupled fixed point theorems for the functions having mixed monotone properties on ordered vector metric spaces, which are more general spaces than partially ordered metric spaces. We also define the double monotone property and investigate the previous results with this property. In the last section, we prove the uniqueness of a coupled fixed point for non-monotone functions. In addition, we present some illustrative examples to emphasize that our results are more general than the ones in the literature.
