Energy Conversion and Management
Abstract:The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is a highly promising and advanced technology in energy development due to its exceptional efficiency and eco-friendly characteristics. Addressing the excessive cost and size limitations, particularly by enhancing power density through increased current density, has been a focal point. However, high current density (HCD) operation results in intricate limitations in mass transfer, catalyst activity, degradation, as well as water, thermal, and gas management in single cells and stacks. This comprehensive review delves into the problems encountered by PEMFCs operating at HCDs for both single cells and stack configurations. A detailed research progress from multiple perspectives, including structural, material, and manufacturing considerations across various components is offered. Additionally, insights into the intricacies of thermal, water, and gas management at both the single-cell and stack levels are provided. Finally, the review offers perspectives on future developments based on the identified problems and ongoing research progress.
