Abstract:This article delves into the ongoing debate surrounding the role of age in second language acquisition, examining developments over the past three decades and highlighting contentious issues. We argue that the commonly held belief in age’s pivotal role is frequently contradicted by empirical evidence. Additionally, we examine the age-related debate with respect to foreign language teaching. A brief review is provided on advances in neuroscientific techniques, which show that the adult brain retains substantial plasticity for language learning, followed by a discussion of these findings in relation to lifelong language learning. Finally, we turn to Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, which offers a dynamic perspective that emphasizes the evolving interplay of age, context, and individual factors, pointing to the need for more qualitative research.

Abstract:Age plays a significant role in second language acquisition (SLA). Research indicates that the ability to learn a second language declines with age. This study reviewed relevant studies on the impact of age on SLA in order to attain the best results as language learning methods should be tailored to the learner's age and specific needs. The results showed that younger learners are more proficient in acquiring a second language due to their brain's plasticity, which enables them to learn new information quickly. They can easily acquire the language’s pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary through exposure and immersion. As learners age, their ability to learn a second language decreases. After adolescence, the brain becomes less plastic, and the acquisition of a second language becomes more challenging. Research also shows that language also has a positive impact on a country’s economic development, as well as improving the international relations of local entrepreneurs. However, adult learners can still learn a second language, but it may take more time and effort. Moreover, the motivation and learning strategies of language learners also play an essential role in SLA. Young learners may not have a strong motivation to learn a second language, while adult learners may have a higher motivation due to professional or personal reasons. Age is a crucial factor in SLA, but it is not the only determining factor. The learner’s motivation, learning strategies, and exposure to the second language also play a significant role in the acquisition of a second language.

Abstract:The issue of language education is one of the most delicate human issues. It is very relevant to the social and political history of society and is also one of the issues imposed by human reality. It is also one of the issues that has intensified the differences between linguists and psychologists in the ways of acquiring them. Perhaps there are things that stand in front of the acquisition of the second language, language is not a neutral system or a tool to be used in a timely manner or in a generation and that’s it, but is a language with its luster and heritage and attractiveness, what are the factors that stand in front of the acquisition of the second language? Is there a real conflict between languages affecting the acquisition of language in children? What are the most important stages of growth in children and their relation to linguistic development? In fact, there is a difference between mother tongue, second language and foreign language, differentiating between these concepts will make it easier for us to reach the appropriate age to acquire the language. The reason is that the acquisition or learning of any language stems from the goals related to the life of the individual, whether professional, economic or social. The bilingual issue raises an important question: Are the two linguistic systems of the human brain separate or connected?

Abstract:The article examines recent evidence that has been offered to support the notion of a sensitive period for second language acquisition. An analysis of that research leaves several questions unresolved. Two small-scale studies are described which attempt to explore some of these issues. In both cases, it is found that the correspondence between language structures in the first and second language is the most important factor affecting acquisition. The age at which second language acquisitions begins is not a significant factor in either study, but the length of residence, indicating the amount of time spent speaking the second language, is significant in the second study. The conclusion is that there is insufficient evidence to accept the claim that mastery of a second language is determined wholly, or even primarily, by maturational factors. Some suggestions are made for an alternative interpretation based on processing differences between older and younger language learners.

Abstract:In 2005, Science magazine designated the problem of accounting for difficulties in L2 (second language) learning as one of the 125 outstanding challenges facing scientific research. A maturationally-based sensitive period has long been the favorite explanation for why ultimate foreign language attainment declines with age-of-acquisition. However, no genetic or neurobiological mechanisms for limiting language learning have yet been identified. At the same time, we know that cognitive, social, and motivational factors change in complex ways across the human lifespan. Emergentist theory provides a framework for relating these changes to variation in the success of L2 learning. The great variability in patterns of learning, attainment, and loss across ages, social groups, and linguistic levels provides the core motivation for the emergentist approach. Our synthesis incorporates three groups of factors which change systematically with age: environmental supports, cognitive abilities, and motivation for language learning. This extended emergentist account explains why and when second language succeeds for some children and adults and fails for others.

Abstract:This research paper is a review of the previous literature that focuses on whether or not there is an influence of second language acquisition during 'critical period'. Critical period refers to acquiring a second language before the age of adulthood. Although there is no consensus among linguists on the impact of the critical period, numerous scholars in the field of second language acquisition agree that language learners gain more benefits during the critical period including mastering the phonological system of the target language. In addition, this paper compares between the potential linguistic benefits between young learners who acquire language at an early age of their lives and their older counterparts who begin learning a language after the age of maturation. Interestingly, those who start studying a second language during the critical period usually outperform their older counterparts due to their exceptional memory traits and fresh speech organs ultimately, it displays the appropriate teaching approaches based on age benefiting from the idea of critical period hypothesis.

Abstract:Studies of language acquisition have shown that language learning ability declines with age. It has been documented that the overwhelming majority of learners who begin the process of second language (L2) learning after passing the critical period — after a certain age – cannot attain native-like competence (underlying knowledge of language) at the end state. There is a universal folk belief, shared by almost all psycholinguists, that at an early age, the brain is plastic; it can modify its own structure, organization and function as a direct consequence of experiences and learning. According to this belief, the plasticity of the brain fades with age and with the increasing specialisation of the different hemispheres and areas of the brain. However, recently neuroscientists, equipped with the complementary aid of brain neuroimaging, have discovered that mature brain is far from being fixed as previously thought; it has the ability to continuously adapt its structure and function based on internal and external environmental changes and/or input such as experience, ageing, illness, injury and learning, meaning that the brain remains plastic throughout life. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to illustrate that the theory about the loss of brain plasticity during natural maturation is not valid in explaining the question why L2 learning is affected by delayed exposure to a language? It should be mentioned here that until now, the overwhelming majority of L2 researchers tend to think of plasticity as a phenomenon confined to early development; and therefore, evidence supporting plasticity is generally ignored.

Abstract:One of the most fascinating, consequential, and far-reaching debates that have occurred in second language acquisition research concerns the Critical Period Hypothesis [1]. Although the hypothesis is generally accepted for first language acquisition, it has been hotly debated on theoretical, methodological, and practical grounds for second language acquisition, fueling studies reporting contradictory findings and setting off competing explanations. The central questions are: Are the observed age effects in ultimate attainment confined to a bounded period, and if they are, are they biologically determined or maturationally constrained? In this article, we take a sui generis , interdisciplinary approach that leverages our understanding of second language acquisition and of physics laws of energy conservation and angular momentum conservation, mathematically deriving the age-attainment geometry. The theoretical lens, termed Energy Conservation Theory for Second Language Acquisition, provides a macroscopic perspective on the second language learning trajectory across the human lifespan.

Abstract:The goal of our study is to present the issues of second language acquisition. It is an interdisciplinary scientific field that tries to point out the processes that accompany the learning of each additional language (after the first, mother tongue). Special attention is devoted to the role of the first language in relation to second language acquisition, and we juxtapose various perspectives – from accepting the statement that first language influence on the second one is minimal, to the concept of first language influence on the second one in the form of linguistic transfer, which is also the reason for occurrence of a number of errors in the acquisition process. The influence of the first language on the acquisition and afterwards on the use of the second language can be positive, negative, or even zero. Positive influence is manifested by the fact that the practical and theoretical knowledge from the mother tongue, the language habits and skills facilitate the process of acquisition and usage of the next language as a communication tool. Negative influence is manifested at all language levels though the so-called negative transfer or interference – these are the errors occurring as a result of the influence of the first language on the second, and having the characteristics of the first.

Abstract:Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is the interdisciplinary field of inquirey which investigates people’s capacity to learn a second language (L2) or subsequent languages (L3, L4, etc.) once the first language (L1) has been acquired. Thus, the onset of acquisition occurs at some time during the L2 learner’s late childhood, adolescent, or adulthood years in either naturalistic (informal) or instructed (formal) settings. When the inquiry into SLA began in the late 1960s it drew equally from what was known or theorised in the fields of linguistics, psychology, language teaching and child language acquisition. In the years that ensued, SLA developed ties with the fields of anthropology, education, bilingualism, psycholinguistics and sociology, and since the mid 1990s there has been a significant theoretical shift from what was once a near exclusive concern for psycholinguistics aspects of L2 learning, or ‘language in the mind’, to a focus on the socio-pragmatic aspects of L2 acquisition, or ‘language as situated in social contexts’ (Ellis, 2012). Abstract:Numerous structural studies have established that experience shapes and reshapes the brain throughout a lifetime. The impact of early development, however, is still a matter of debate. Further clues may come from studying multilinguals who acquired their second language at different ages. We investigated adult multilinguals who spoke three languages fluently, where the third language was learned in classroom settings, not before the age of 9 years. Multilinguals exposed to two languages simultaneously from birth (SiM) were contrasted with multinguals who acquired their first two languages successively (SuM). Whole brain voxel based morphometry revealed that, relative to SuM, SiM have significantly lower gray matter volume in several language-associated cortical areas in both hemispheres: bilaterally in medial and inferior frontal gyrus, in the right medial temporal gyrus and inferior posterior parietal gyrus, as well as in the left inferior temporal gyrus. Thus, as shown by others, successive language learning increases the volume of language-associated cortical areas. In brains exposed early on and simultaneously to more than one language, however, learning of additional languages seems to have less impact. We conclude that - at least with respect to language acquisition - early developmental influences are maintained and have an effect on experience-dependent plasticity well into adulthood.

Abstract:The early acquisition of a second language is increasingly acknowledged for its benefits in cognitive development, social skills, and academic performance. This journal explores the importance of beginning second language education at the age of five, focusing on the developmental benefits, effective teaching methods, and long-term outcomes. This journal article aims to enhance the current understanding by offering empirical insights into the experiences and perceptions of parents, teachers, and children concerning early second language learning. Through qualitative data analysis from interviews, observations, and documentation of 22 participants. Consisting of 10 parents, 10 students with an age range of 4-6 years, and 2 teachers at the Bimba Aiueo H. Shibi unit South Jakarta, PAUD Institution. This research was conducted from 10 June 2024 to 13 July 2024. Using qualitative descriptive methods, this research seeks to explain the impact of learning a second language acquisition on children's development.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to examine the social behaviour and competence of children, ages 3–6 as they progressed through the stages of second language acquisition in a dual‐immersion program in English and Mandarin. Over 100 2–3 hour classroom observations were made during the school year. Teachers’ evaluations of children’s social competence and behaviour were collected at the beginning and end of the school year. Results suggest that girls had more social adjustment difficulties than boys. However, as language skills increased, adjustment difficulties decreased significantly among all children. RÉSUMÉ: L’objectif de cette étude est l’analyse des compétences et comportements sociaux des enfants de 3–6 ans lors de l’acquisition d’une seconde langue dans un programme d’immersion en Anglais et en Mandarin. Plus de 100 observations de classe de 2–3 heures ont été effectuées pendant l’année scolaire. Les évaluations des compétences et comportements sociaux des enfants, effectuées par les enseigants, ont été recueillies au début et à la fin de l’année scolaire. Les résultats indiquent que les filles ont davantage de difficultés d’ajustement social que les garçons. Cependant, avec les progrès dans l’acquisition langagière. ces difficultés diminuent de façon significative chez tous les enfants. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war eine Untersuchung des Sozialverhaltens und der sozialen Fähigkeiten von Kindern im Alter von 3–6 Jahren, während Stufen zum Erwerb einer zweiten Sprache in einem zweisprachigen Immersionsprogramm in Englisch und Mandarin durchliefen. Über einhundert 2‐ bis 3‐stündige Beobachtungen im Klassenzimmer wurden während des Schuljahrs gemacht. Die Bewertungen von Lehrern bezüglich der sozialen Fähigkeiten und des Sozialverhaltens der Kinder wurden am Anfang und am Ende des Schuljahrs gesammelt. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass Mädchen größere soziale Anpassungsschwierigkeiten hatten als Jungen. Als die Sprachfähigkeiten jedoch besser wurden, sind die Anpassungsschwierigkeiten unter allen Kindern wesentlich geringer geworden. RESUMEN: El objetivo del presente estudio fue examinar el comportamiento y competencia social de niños de 3 a 6 años de edad, mientras progresaron por las etapas de la adquisición de un segundo idioma en un programa de doble inmersión en inglés y la lengua mandarina. Más de 100 observaciones en las aulas, de 2 a 3 horas, se realizaron durante el año escolar. Al principio y al final de este periodo, fueron recogidas las evaluaciones de los maestros sobre la competencia y comportamiento social de los niños. Los resultados sugirieron que las niñas tenian más dificultades en las adaptaciones sociales que los niños. Sin embargo, a media que aumentaban las destrezas en los idiomas, las dificultades en las adaptaciones disminuyeron significativamente para todos los niños.

Abstract:Much of what is known about the outcome of second language acquisition and bilingualism can be summarized in terms of inter-individual variability, plasticity and age. The present review looks at variability and plasticity with respect to their underlying sources, and at age as a modulating factor in variability and plasticity. In this context we consider critical period effects vs. bilingualism effects, early and late bilingualism, nativelike and non-nativelike L2 attainment, cognitive aging, individual differences in learning, and linguistic dominance in bilingualism. Non-uniformity is an inherent characteristic of both early and late bilingualism. This review shows how plasticity and age connect with biological and experiential sources of variability, and underscores the value of research that reveals and explains variability. In these ways the review suggests how plasticity, variability and age conspire to frame fundamental research issues in L2 acquisition and bilingualism, and provides points of reference for discussion of the present <i>Frontiers in Psychology</i> Research Topic.

Abstract:Educational policies that impact second language (L2) learners-a rapidly-growing group-are often enacted without consulting relevant research. This review synthesized research regarding optimal conditions for L2 acquisition, facilitative L2 learner and teacher characteristics, and speed of L2 acquisition, from four bodies of work-foreign language education, child language research, sociocultural studies, and psycholinguistics-often overlooked by educators. Seventy-one peer-reviewed journal articles studying PK-12 L2 learners met inclusion criteria. Findings included: 1) Optimal conditions for L2 learners immersed in a majority-L2 society include strong home literacy practices, opportunities to use the L2 informally, well-implemented specially-designed L2 educational programs, and sufficient time devoted to L2 literacy instruction, whereas L2 learners with little L2 exposure require explicit instruction to master grammar; 2) L2 learners with strong L2 aptitude, motivation, and first language (L1) skills are more successful; 3) Effective L2 teachers demonstrate sufficient L2 proficiency, strong instructional skills, and proficiency in their students' L1; 4) L2 learners require 3-7 years to reach L2 proficiency, with younger learners typically taking longer but more likely to achieve close-to-native results. These findings, even those most relevant to education, are not reflected in current US policy. Additional research is needed on the characteristics of successful or unsuccessful L2 learners and L2 teachers. Such research should attend systematically to the differences between L2 learning in maximal versus minimal input settings; whereas the psycholinguistic challenges of L2 learning might be common across settings, the sociocultural and interactional challenges and opportunities differ in ways that can massively impact outcomes.
Enhancing Foreign Language Learning Approaches to Promote Healthy Aging: A Systematic Review

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to investigate the best approaches to teaching a foreign language to older people to help them achieve the desired results and explore their benefits. This review strictly follows the PRISMA methodology for systematic reviews and meta-analyses to identify the core experimental studies that deal with the topic of foreign language learning approaches among the older generations. Altogether eight studies detected were included in the systematic review. The available sources were found in Web of Science and Scopus. The findings indicate that foreign language learning can promote seniors' welfare and successful aging despite their learning outcomes, which means that the key benefit for third-age foreign language learners while learning a foreign language is not the achieved proficiency level, but the feeling of subjective satisfaction. This can be a good incentive to achieve better learning outcomes, provided that learners have been offered a pleasant and safe learning environment, using suitable learning approaches during which they can build on their acquired knowledge and experience, as well as discuss the topics they are interested in. Thus, foreign language teachers play an important part in seniors' educational process because their teaching methods and materials when adapted to the elderly's educational needs can have a positive impact on the maintenance and possibly, enhancement of the older people's cognitive functions and on the improvement of their mental activity, which consequently maintains their healthy aging.

Abstract:Empirical and theoretical research on language has recently experienced a period of extensive growth. Unfortunately, however, in the case of the Japanese language, far fewer studies—particularly those written in English—have been presented on adult second language (L2) learners and bilingual children. As the field develops, it is increasingly important to integrate theoretical concepts and empirical research findings in second language acquisition (SLA) of Japanese, so that the concepts and research can be eventually applied to educational practice. This article attempts to: (a) address at least some of the gaps currently existing in the literature, (b) deal with important topics to the extent possible, and (c) discuss various problems with regard to adult learners of Japanese as an L2 and English–Japanese bilingual children. Specifically, the article first examines the characteristics of the Japanese language. Tracing the history of SLA studies, this article then deliberately touches on a wide spectrum of domains of linguistic knowledge (e.g., phonology and phonetics, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, discourse), context of language use (e.g., interactive conversation, narrative), research orientations (e.g., formal linguistics, psycholinguistics, social psychology, sociolinguistics), and age groups (e.g., children, adults). Finally, by connecting past SLA research findings in English and recent/present concerns in Japanese as SLA with a focus on the past 10 years including corpus linguistics, this article provides the reader with an overview of the field of Japanese linguistics and its critical issues.
