Abstract:Age plays a significant role in second language acquisition (SLA). Research indicates that the ability to learn a second language declines with age. This study reviewed relevant studies on the impact of age on SLA in order to attain the best results as language learning methods should be tailored to the learner's age and specific needs. The results showed that younger learners are more proficient in acquiring a second language due to their brain's plasticity, which enables them to learn new information quickly. They can easily acquire the language’s pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary through exposure and immersion. As learners age, their ability to learn a second language decreases. After adolescence, the brain becomes less plastic, and the acquisition of a second language becomes more challenging. Research also shows that language also has a positive impact on a country’s economic development, as well as improving the international relations of local entrepreneurs. However, adult learners can still learn a second language, but it may take more time and effort. Moreover, the motivation and learning strategies of language learners also play an essential role in SLA. Young learners may not have a strong motivation to learn a second language, while adult learners may have a higher motivation due to professional or personal reasons. Age is a crucial factor in SLA, but it is not the only determining factor. The learner’s motivation, learning strategies, and exposure to the second language also play a significant role in the acquisition of a second language.

Abstract:Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is the interdisciplinary field of inquirey which investigates people’s capacity to learn a second language (L2) or subsequent languages (L3, L4, etc.) once the first language (L1) has been acquired. Thus, the onset of acquisition occurs at some time during the L2 learner’s late childhood, adolescent, or adulthood years in either naturalistic (informal) or instructed (formal) settings. When the inquiry into SLA began in the late 1960s it drew equally from what was known or theorised in the fields of linguistics, psychology, language teaching and child language acquisition. In the years that ensued, SLA developed ties with the fields of anthropology, education, bilingualism, psycholinguistics and sociology, and since the mid 1990s there has been a significant theoretical shift from what was once a near exclusive concern for psycholinguistics aspects of L2 learning, or ‘language in the mind’, to a focus on the socio-pragmatic aspects of L2 acquisition, or ‘language as situated in social contexts’ (Ellis, 2012). Abstract:In this article, the motivation for Universal Grammar (UG), as assumed in the principles and parameters framework of generative grammar (Chomsky, 1981a, 1981b), is discussed, particular attention being paid to the logical problem of first language acquisition. The potential role of UG in second language (L2) acquisition is then considered. Three different positions are reviewed: (a) the claim that UG is not available to L2 learners; (b) the claim that UG is fully available; and (c) the claim that the L2 learner's access to UG is mediated by the mother tongue. This raises the issue of what kind of evidence can be used to decide between these three positions. Recent experimental research which argues for one or another of these positions by investigating the L2 status of the Subjacency Principle is reviewed, and the implications of this research are discussed.

Abstract:Universal Grammar, represented by Chomsky, believes that the human brain is born with a Language Acquisition Device. Under the stimulation of the language environment, the language function of the human brain dedicated to language learning will be activated and begin to acquire a language. Universal grammar is the core idea of Chomsky's generative linguistics theory, which is composed of a limited number of syntactic principles representing the common features of human language. It is precisely because the human brain naturally generates this universal grammar that human beings can acquire their own mother tongue when language input is poor or even lacks "negative corpus" (that is, the indication of language errors or faults). Chomsky once proposed a simple language acquisition model, namely "language input —Language Acquisition Device —language acquisition", which means that language input generates grammar through Language Acquisition Device, thus acquiring language. It is worth noting that Chomsky's theory is not specifically designed for the study of Second Language Acquisition, and he himself has not given any guidance in this field, but it provides theoretical support for the theory of Second Language Acquisition (Yang Chunyuan, 2020). Hence, learning the whole semester’s course of Second Language Acquisition, having seen universal grammar as a important content in my textbook, this paper tries to integrate these related theories and make a conclusion and comment or paraphrasing(not all the bibliographies are quoted directly in this paper, paraphrased or arranged instead)based on various bibliographies.

Abstract:English is the primary second language learned in Saudi Arabia. Many Saudi students are learning English as a second language for several reasons. Still, almost all English second language learners in Saudi Arabia are willing to learn English proficiently as English natives. Chomsky’s Universal Grammar is one of the primary theories that has discussed the idea of learning a second language. The primary purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the role of Universal Grammar in second language acquisition by investigating how Saudi Learners of English use the English Adjective Phrase Structure. This research adopts the Full Transfer/Full Access Model as its model. This study used an online questionnaire method design and both quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze data. This study assigned 118 participants from undergraduate students in Level Two and Level Five at English Language and Literature Department at Prince Sattam bin Abdul-Aziz University. The primary findings of this study indicate that native-like proficiency can be reached due to the fact there is full access to Universal Grammar when learning a second language. This study also found that Arabic as a first language plays a significant role in the beginning stages of learning English as a second language. Furthermore, the findings reveal that the effect of the first language on the second language can be overcome with more input the learner gets.

Abstract:This article delves into the ongoing debate surrounding the role of age in second language acquisition, examining developments over the past three decades and highlighting contentious issues. We argue that the commonly held belief in age’s pivotal role is frequently contradicted by empirical evidence. Additionally, we examine the age-related debate with respect to foreign language teaching. A brief review is provided on advances in neuroscientific techniques, which show that the adult brain retains substantial plasticity for language learning, followed by a discussion of these findings in relation to lifelong language learning. Finally, we turn to Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, which offers a dynamic perspective that emphasizes the evolving interplay of age, context, and individual factors, pointing to the need for more qualitative research.

A significant turning point at the moment is Chomsky's UG approach to language education, particularly its values and parameters. Many researchers argue that with SLA, UG has problems like Fries and Palmer. They say that there are linguistic variations that make it difficult to differentiate between the SLA and the first language acquisition. It is possible to further clarify what would be specifically based on in future linguistic studies by assessing the challenges, so that development will be advanced towards language learning and SLA.

Abstract:The phenomenon of fossilization as the feature of interlanguage has been acknowledged and studied many times since the emergence of the theory proposed by Selinker which came into existence in the field of SLA in 1972. The premise of interlanguage as a separate language system used by second language learners as well as foreign language learners in learning their target language is credited to Selinker. Fossilization in interlanguage is coined by Selinker and is generally defined as a cessation of learning the target language. Nevertheless, the notion that interlanguage is fossilized is still open to question. Thus, this present study aims to provide insight to the reader about the concept of fossilization by defining and characterizing interlanguage and fossilization in second and foreign language acquisition, discussing the causes of fossilization in interlanguage development, as well as examining the relationship between interlanguage development and Universal Grammar principle in an attempt to help the reader better grasp and comprehend the phenomenon.

Abstract:Second language learning for adults is an activity to help adults in acquiring a second language is done consciously. The learning process for an adult second language is unfounded educator considerations but based on interests learners. E d ucational implications for practical adults is a necessary understanding of characteristics of adult education, principles, methods, and learning techniques second language for people mature. The purpose of this study is to find out the social factor in the classroom influence second language acquisition in adult learners. A Critical Evaluation of the Theory of Universal Grammar and its Contribution to Second Language Learning and Teaching

Abstract:Many hypotheses on how a language learner gathers or acquires a second language have been produced during the last 50 years. Many linguists and scholars have presented their thoughts and assumptions in their discussions of how to teach and learn a second language. The current review article gives a basic definition of universal grammar, which then critically examines the arguments in favour of and against it to respond thoroughly to the question. The study examines developmental data showing that learners employ hierarchically built structures at all levels of language organization. The use of probabilistic processes and inductive learning mechanisms appropriate for the psychological restrictions on language acquisition is suggested by longitudinal trajectories of development, which demonstrate sensitivity to the amount of specific patterns in the input. This review article assesses the Universal Grammar theory's impact on second language learning and instruction. However, it has been widely adopted over the last several decades by American linguist Noam Chomsky and its many adherents.

Abstract:The study of second language acquisition (SLA) forms a young academic discipline, emerging from fundamental paradigm shifts in SLA’s parent disciplines, linguistics and psychology. This paper gives a brief overview of how the study of SLA came into existence, formulates the fundamental questions concerning SLA, reviews some recent developments, and identifies possibilities and challenges for SLA theory construction and empirical research in the near future. To tackle the fundamental issues of SLA successfully, it is mandatory that SLA researchers, of whom the majority currently has a linguistic background, collaborate with researchers in psychology and other disciplines.

Abstract:This paper discusses the main issues in Autonomous Induction Theory in relation to L2 acquisition.Autonomous Induction Theory is a new SLA theory which attributes an important role to Universal Grammar to explain how learners possess knowledge of essential properties of grammar despite impoverished input.It integrates SLA traditions and focuses on induction learning.Induction learning here is neither concept learning nor hypothesis-formation,but the autonomous and modular representational systems (levels of representation) of the language faculty.Thus,it provides us with a new perspective on the explanation of how L2 is acquired,which is significant for the study of second language acquisition.

Abstract:The core notion of modern Universal Grammar is that language ability requires abstract representation in terms of hierarchy, movement operations, abstract features on words, and fixed mapping to meaning. These mental structures are a step toward integrating representational knowledge of all kinds into a larger model of cognitive psychology. Examining first and second language at once provides clues as to how abstractly we should represent this knowledge. The abstract nature of grammar allows both the formulation of many grammars and the possibility that a rule of one grammar could apply to another grammar. We argue that every language contains Multiple Grammars which may reflect different language families. We develop numerous examples of how the same abstract rules can apply in various languages and develop a theory of how language modules (case-marking, topicalization, and quantification) interact to predict L2 acquisition paths. In particular we show in depth how Germanic Verb-second operations, based on Verb-final structure, can apply in English. The argument is built around how and where V2 from German can apply in English, seeking to explain the crucial contrast: "nothing" yelled out Bill/(*)"nothing" yelled Bill out in terms of the necessary abstractness of the V2 rule.

Abstract:The issue of language education is one of the most delicate human issues. It is very relevant to the social and political history of society and is also one of the issues imposed by human reality. It is also one of the issues that has intensified the differences between linguists and psychologists in the ways of acquiring them. Perhaps there are things that stand in front of the acquisition of the second language, language is not a neutral system or a tool to be used in a timely manner or in a generation and that’s it, but is a language with its luster and heritage and attractiveness, what are the factors that stand in front of the acquisition of the second language? Is there a real conflict between languages affecting the acquisition of language in children? What are the most important stages of growth in children and their relation to linguistic development? In fact, there is a difference between mother tongue, second language and foreign language, differentiating between these concepts will make it easier for us to reach the appropriate age to acquire the language. The reason is that the acquisition or learning of any language stems from the goals related to the life of the individual, whether professional, economic or social. The bilingual issue raises an important question: Are the two linguistic systems of the human brain separate or connected?

Abstract:In 2005, Science magazine designated the problem of accounting for difficulties in L2 (second language) learning as one of the 125 outstanding challenges facing scientific research. A maturationally-based sensitive period has long been the favorite explanation for why ultimate foreign language attainment declines with age-of-acquisition. However, no genetic or neurobiological mechanisms for limiting language learning have yet been identified. At the same time, we know that cognitive, social, and motivational factors change in complex ways across the human lifespan. Emergentist theory provides a framework for relating these changes to variation in the success of L2 learning. The great variability in patterns of learning, attainment, and loss across ages, social groups, and linguistic levels provides the core motivation for the emergentist approach. Our synthesis incorporates three groups of factors which change systematically with age: environmental supports, cognitive abilities, and motivation for language learning. This extended emergentist account explains why and when second language succeeds for some children and adults and fails for others.
