Abstract:Many scholars have drawn attention to the way that elements of Anne Conway’s system anticipate ideas found in Leibniz. This paper explores the relationship between Conway and Leibniz’s work with regard to time, space, and process. It argues – against existing scholarship – that Conway is not a proto-Leibnizian relationist about time or space, and in fact her views lie much closer to those of Henry More; yet Conway and Leibniz agree on the primacy of process. This exploration advances our understanding of Conway’s system, and the intellectual relationships between Conway, More, and Leibniz.

Abstract:In June 1965, Sister Mary Kenneth Keller, BVM, received the first US PhD in Computer Science, and this paper outlines her life and accomplishments. As a scholar, she has the distinction of being an early advocate of learning-by-example in artificial intelligence. Her main scholarly contribution was in shaping computer science education in high schools and small colleges. She was an evangelist for viewing the computer as a symbol manipulator, for providing computer literacy to everyone, and for the use of computers in service to humanity. She was far ahead of her time in working to ensure a place for women in technology and in eliminating barriers preventing their participation, such as poor access to education and daycare. She was a strong and spirited woman, a visionary in seeing how computers would revolutionize our lives. A condensation of this paper appeared as, ``The Legacy of Mary Kenneth Keller, First U.S. Ph.D. in Computer Science," Jennifer Head and Dianne P. O'Leary, IEEE Annals of the History of Computing 45(1):55--63, January-March 2023.

Abstract:The DNA nanotechnology outlines a new chapter in biological sciences, opening a new era of scientific and technological advancements. A pioneer of DNA nanotechnology, Professor Liu from the University of Stuttgart in Germany, our latest Light People, has been working at the interface, where nanophotonics meets biology and chemistry. On the path of scientific explorations, she believes in hard working and persistency, as indicated by a line of Chinese poetry she likes, "Don't stop chasing the wind and the moon, the spring mountain is at the end of the plain." She is an outstanding female researcher, radiating wisdom. She is a pioneer in exploring the power of DNA nanotechnology and applying it to other disciplines. Meanwhile, she struggles with work–life balance. Apart from being determined and persistent, Prof. Liu is also introspective. One sees the brilliance of a scientist and the struggles of a mother, as Prof. Laura Na Liu explains to us her very personal "philosophy of life".

She was a driving force in the laboratory guiding research and screening for inborn errors of metabolism, while she was a great supervisor. Just being retired she passed away in January 2023.

Abstract:Ruzena Bajcsy is one of the founders of the modern field of robotics. With an education in electrical engineering in Slovakia, followed by a Ph.D. at Stanford, Bajcsywas the first woman to join the engineering faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the first, she says, because "in those days, nice girls didn't mess around with screwdrivers." Bajcsy, now 91, spoke with IEEE Spectrum at the 40th anniversary celebration of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

We specifically solicited empirical papers that are somehow connected to the influence that Martin had on the authors' own work or papers that review or summarise a body of their work that was influenced by Martin and his work. Martin's research, predominantly work on autobiographical memory, has had an immense impact on our understanding of human memory and will continue to influence much of memory research in the future.

Abstract:Vivien Chevaleyre was a gifted neuroscientist and electrophysiologist who delighted to follow the less-taken road. We lost him to lung cancer on January 10th, 2024, four days before his 51st birthday. Although his career was cut short, he made a wide range of pioneering discoveries in the fields of synaptic plasticity and hippocampal function. Vivien was an extraordinarily creative neuroscientist who loved the challenge of performing difficult and rigorous experiments that so often led to transformative results.

Abstract:This article memorializes Naomi Weisstein, who passed away on March 26, 2015 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In Chicago, Illinois, Weisstein began what would become a defining feature of her career and legacy-combining feminist political activism with both her academic and personal life pursuits. By the time she began her first faculty position at Loyola University in Chicago in 1966, Weisstein was an outspoken feminist. In 1968, she published her now classic article "Kirche, Kuche, Kinder as Scientific Law: Psychology Constructs the Female" (PCF; New England Free Press), wherein she criticized the field of psychology for failing to understand women because of its overreliance on essentialism and biologically based theories, while ignoring the importance of social context. Her critique laid the groundwork for others to explore the social construction of gender, and for second-wave feminism to take hold within the discipline of psychology. Despite all of her varied contributions, it is PCF that helped to define Weisstein's legacy in psychology. The article has been cited as a defining moment in second-wave feminism, and several psychologists have remembered the piece as a catalyst for their feminist awakening.

Abstract:It is with great sadness and sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Ms. Reta L. Wehmeier. Reta was a tremendous contributor to the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIM) and the IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurements (OJIM). She started her journey with the Instrumentation and Measurement (I&M) Society as the junior editorial assistant. She continued working with three different Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) and several other Editorial Assistants, and assumed the position of Senior Editorial Assistant, which she held until her passing.

Abstract:Larry Young, the self-described "guy who spends his days thinking about love and bonding in terms of biochemical reactions in localized circuits of the brain" (The Chemistry Between Us1), passed away, too early, in March 2024. He was a brilliant scientist who used prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) and other rodents to pioneer a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin act in the mammalian brain to mediate affiliative behaviors. He was also so much more—to his family, his field, his trainees and colleagues, and the larger world with whom he so skillfully communicated his complex studies that have illuminated how the social brain works.
