Abstract:We use exact numerical diagonalization in the search of fractional quantum Hall states with non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. For the (most promising) states in a partially filled second Landau level, the search is narrowed to the range of filling factors 7/3 < ve < 8/3. In this range, the analysis of energy spectra and correlation functions, calculated including finite width and Landau level mixing, supports the prominent non-Abelian candidates at ve = 5/2 (paired Moore–Read pfafian state) and 12/5 (clustered Read–Rezayi parafermion state). Outside of this range, the noninteracting composite fermion model with four attached flux quanta is validated, yielding the family of quantum liquids with fractional, but Abelian statistics. The borderline ve = 7/3 state is shown to be adiabatically connected to the Laughlin liquid, but its short-range correlations are significantly different.

Ground State and Edge Excitations of A Quantum Hall Liquid at Filling Factor 2/3

Abstract:We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau-level filling factor nu=2/3 in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential based on the disk geometry. We find that the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a nu=1/3 Laughlin state. We also find that there are two counterpropagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change in the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example, we find that increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.

Abstract:The nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral bulk modes. We argue that the properties of such a state are consistent with existing numerical and experimental work, and discuss possible experimental probes of its presence.

Abstract:We investigate the disorder-driven phase transitions in bosonic fractional quantum Hall liquids at filling factors f = 1/2 and f = 1 in the lowest Landau level. We use the evolution of ground-state entanglement entropy, fidelity susceptibility, and Hall conductance with increasing disorder strength to identify the underlying phase transitions. The critical disorder strengths obtained from these different quantities are consistent with each other, validating the reliability of our numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization. At f = 1/2, we observe a clear transition from the bosonic Laughlin state to a trivial insulating phase. At f = 1, we identify a direct phase transition from the non-Abelian bosonic Moore-Read state to a trivial insulating phase, although some signs of a disorder-induced intermediate fractional quantum Hall phase were recently reported for the f = 5/2 fermionic cousin.

Abstract:We have studied temperature dependence of the diagonal resistivity rho(xx) in the vicinity of Landau level filling factor v = 2/9 in a high quality two-dimensional electron system (2DES) and observed a direct transition from the v = 2/9 fractional quantum Hall liquid to the reentrant insulator around v = 1/5. Such a transition is forbidden in the global phase diagram proposed by Kivelson, Lee and Zhang for 2DES in the presence of disorder and magnetic field. Our result supports the interpretation of the insulator in terms of a phase with substantial Wigner crystal order. Copyright (C) 1996 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
Fractional Quantum Hall Bilayers at Half-Filling: Tunneling-driven Non-Abelian Phase

Abstract:Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here, we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil ``fingerprint'' evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian (331) Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a ``proof-of-principle'' demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\text{wave}$ pairing states.

Abstract:In this work, we study the exact liquid-solid transition between the Laughlin liquid and the Wigner crystal states in the lowest Landau level at low filling factors. The incompressible quantum fluid consists of strongly correlated electrons interacting with a strong magnetic field and cooled at a low temperature. According to composite fermions theory, in principle all fractions are possible. The Laughlin wave function is not particularly accurate at where the transition from the liquid to crystal occurs. Independent of the model used to estimate the transition temperature, we note that the Wigner crystal phase is expected to exist at such low filling factors based on analytical calculation, into the series of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) liquids prescribed by the composite fermions model.

Abstract:We generalize the fractional quantum Hall hierarchy picture to apply to arbitrary, possibly non-Abelian, fractional quantum Hall states. Applying this to the nu = 5/2 Moore-Read state, we construct new explicit trial wavefunctions to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level. The resulting hierarchy of states, which reproduces the filling fractions of all observed Hall conductance plateaus in the second Landau level, is characterized by electron pairing in the ground state and an excitation spectrum that includes non-Abelian anyons of the Ising type. We propose this as a unifying picture in which p-wave pairing characterizes the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level.

Abstract:The quantum Hall liquid-Wigner solid phase boundary as a function of filling factor, density (Landau-level mixing) and temperature displays a rich variety of phenomena. More importantly the density and temperature range where these phenomena could take place are in an experimentally accessible regime. This is particularly true because of the availability of hole samples.We will present results of variational Monte Carlo calculations on the ground-state energy of the liquid and solid. Assuming the transition is first-order, we predict the density-dependent phase boundary at T = 0 for the basic filling factors nu = 1/3, 1/5, 1/7, and 1/9. At finite temperatures, treating the excitation spectrum as phonons for the solid and magnetorotons for the liquid, we can calculate the low-temperature properties of the phase boundary. Because the entropy of the solid coming from the low-lying shear modes is large compared to the entropy of the liquid, i.e. there is a gap in the excitation spectrum, we find an interesting regime where the liquid freezes as the temperature is raised. This quantum freezing is analogous to the behavior near the minimum in the melting of the solid helium-superfluid helium boundary.
Fusion mechanism for quasiparticles and topological quantum order in the lowest Landau level

Abstract:Starting from Halperin multilayer systems we develop a hierarchical scheme that generates, bosonic and fermionic, single-layer quantum Hall states (or vacua) of arbitrary filling factor. Our scheme allows for the insertion of quasiparticle excitations with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics and quantum numbers that depend on the nature of the original vacuum. Most importantly, it reveals a fusion mechanism for quasielectrons and magnetoexcitons that generalizes ideas about particle fractionalization introduced in A. Bochniak, Z. Nussinov, A. Seidel, and G. Ortiz, Commun. Phys. 5, 171 (2022) for the case of Laughlin fluids. In addition, in the second quantization representation, we uncover the inherent topological quantum order characterizing these vacua. In particular, we illustrate the methodology by constructing generalized composite (generalized Read) operators for the non-Abelian Pfaffian and Hafnian quantum fluid states.

Evolution of Quantum Entanglement with Disorder in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Abstract:We present a detailed study of the ground-state entanglement in disordered fractional quantum Hall liquids. We consider electrons at various filling fractions f in the lowest Landau level, with Coulomb interactions. At f = 1/3,1/5, and 2/5 where an incompressible ground-state manifold exists at zero disorder, we observe a pronounced minimum in the derivative of entanglement entropy with respect to disorder. At each filling, the position of this minimum is stable against increasing system size, but its magnitude grows monotonically and appears to diverge in the thermodynamic limit. We consider this behavior of the entropy derivative as a compelling signal of the expected disorder-driven phase transition from a topological fractional quantum Hall phase to an insulating phase. On the contrary, at f = 1/2 where a compressible composite fermion sea is present at zero disorder, the entropy derivative exhibits much greater, almost chaotic, finite-size effects, without a clear phase transition signal for system sizes within our exact diagonalization limit. However, the dependence of entanglement entropy with system size changes with increasing disorder, consistent with the expectation of a phase transition from a composite fermion sea to an insulator. Finally, we consider f = 1/7 where compressibleWigner crystals are quite competitive at zero disorder, and analyze the level statistics of entanglement spectrum at f = 1/3.
From Fractional Chern Insulators To Abelian And Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall States: Adiabatic Continuity And Orbital Entanglement Spectrum

Abstract:The possibility of realizing lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, so-called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), in nearly flat topological (Chern) bands has attracted a lot of recent interest. Here, we make the connection between Abelian as well as non-Abelian FQH states and FCIs more precise. Using a gauge-fixed version of Qi's Wannier basis representation of a Chern band, we demonstrate that the interpolation between several FCI states, obtained by short-range lattice interactions in a spin-orbit-coupled kagome lattice model, and the corresponding continuum FQH states is smooth: the gap remains approximately constant and extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, while the low-lying part of the orbital entanglement spectrum remains qualitatively unaltered. The orbital entanglement spectra also provide a first glimpse of the edge physics of FCIs via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Corroborating these results, we find that the squared overlaps between the FCI and FQH ground states are as large as 98.7% for the 8-electron Laughlin state at v = 1/3 (consistent with an earlier study) and 97.8% for the 10-electron Moore-Read state at v = 1/2. For the bosonic analogs of these states, the adiabatic continuity is also shown to hold, albeit with somewhat smaller associated overlaps, etc. Although going between the Chern bands to the Landau-level problem is often smooth, we show that this is not always the case by considering fermions at filling fraction v = 4/5, where the interpolation between Hamiltonians describing the two systems results in a phase transition. Particle-Hole Symmetry and the Reentrant Integer Quantum Hall Wigner Solid

Abstract:The interplay of strong Coulomb interactions and of topology is currently under intense scrutiny in various condensed matter and atomic systems. One example of this interplay is the phase competition of fractional quantum Hall states and the Wigner solid in the two-dimensional electron gas. Here we report a Wigner solid at $\nu=1.79$ and its melting due to fractional correlations occurring at $\nu=9/5$. This Wigner solid, that we call the reentrant integer quantum Hall Wigner solid, develops in a range of Landau level filling factors that is related by particle-hole symmetry to the so called reentrant Wigner solid. We thus find that the Wigner solid in the GaAs/AlGaAs system straddles the partial filling factor $1/5$ not only at the lowest filling factors, but also near $\nu=9/5$. Our results highlight the particle-hole symmetry as a fundamental symmetry of the extended family of Wigner solids and paint a complex picture of the competition of the Wigner solid with fractional quantum Hall states.

Abstract:This paper presents some recent results on the anisotropic electronic transport at half-filling factors in the second and third Landau levels. In the third Landau level at ν=92and112, the electronic transport is already strongly anisotropic in perpendicular magnetic field. This anisotropic phase is believed to be due to the formation of a unidirectional charge density wave. Applying an in-plane field overcomes the initial pinning and reorients the direction of this anisotropy. In the second Landau level, the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state at ν=52and72 is destroyed and transformed into an anisotropic phase by an in-plane magnetic field. This result provides additional evidence that the ground state at ν=52and72 is spin-polarized.
Strange Metal to Insulator Transitions in the Lowest Landau Level

Abstract:We study the microscopic model of electrons in the partially-filled lowest Landau level interacting via the Coulomb potential by the diagrammatic theory within the GW approximation. In a wide range of filling fractions and temperatures, we find a homogeneous non-Fermi liquid (nFL) state similar to that found in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, with logarithmic corrections to the anomalous dimension. In addition, the phase diagram is qualitatively similiar to that of SYK: a first-order transition terminating at a critical end-point separates the nFL phase from a band insulator that corresponds to the fully-filled Landau level. This critical point, as well as that of the SYK model -- whose critical exponents we determine more precisely -- are shown to both belong to the Van der Waals universality class. The possibility of a charge density wave (CDW) instability is also investigated, and we find the homogeneous nFL state to extend down to the ground state for fillings $0.2 \lesssim \nu \lesssim 0.8$, while a CDW appears outside this range of fillings at sufficiently low temperatures. Our results suggest that the SYK-like nFL state should be a generic feature of the partially-filled lowest Landau level at intermediate temperatures.

Abstract:At filling factor $\nu=1/m$, $m$ odd integer, I present variational ground-state and excited-state wave functions, of two-dimensional electron system with homogeneous ion background, that show the condensation into a liquid-crystal state. For $m=1, 3, 5$, the ground-state energy per electron is substantially lower than the Laughlin one, for uniform liquid state.

Abstract:Fractional quantum Hall liquids can accommodate various degrees of spatial ordering. The most likely scenarios are a Hall p-atic, Hall smectic, and Hall crystal, in which, respectively, orientational, one-dimensional translational, and two-dimensional translational symmetries are broken. I derive the long-wavelength properties of these phases and the transitions between them using the Chern-Simons Landau-Ginzburg mapping, which relates them to spatially ordered superfluids. The effects of coupling to a periodic or anisotropic "substrate" (e.g., a gate array) are also discussed.
Phase transitions out of quantum Hall states in moiré materials

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental breakthroughs in observing Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall (FQAH) states in moiré materials, we propose and study various unconventional phase transitions between quantum Hall phases and Fermi liquids or charge ordered phases upon tuning the bandwidth. At a fixed rational lattice filling $\nu$, we describe a quantum Ginzburg-Landau theory to describe the intertwinement between the FQAH and Charge Density Wave (CDW) orders. We use this theory to describe phase transitions between the FQAH and a CDW insulator. The critical theory for a direct second order transition resembles that of the familiar deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) but with an additional Chern-Simons term. At filling -1/2, we study the possibility of a continuous transition between the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) and the Fermi liquid (FL) building on and refining previous work by Barkeshli and McGreevy. Crucially we show that filling constraints ignored in that work ensure that translation symmetry alone is enough to enable a second order CFL-FL transition. We argue that there must be critical CDW fluctuations though neither phase has long range CDW order. We present experimental signatures the most striking of which is a universal jump of both longitudinal and Hall resistivities at the critical point. With disorder, we argue that the CDW order gets pinned and the CFL-FL evolution happens through an intermediate electrically insulating phase with mobile neutral fermions. A clean analog of this insulating phase with long range CDW order and a neutral fermi surface can potentially also exist. We also present a critical theory for the CFL to FL transition at filling -3/4. Our work opens up a new avenue to realize deconfined criticality and fractionalized phases beyond familiar Landau level physics in the moire Chern band system.

Abstract:A proposal of the existence of an {\em Anomalous} phase ($\mathcal{A}$ phase) [<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.056202" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a> Das et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 056202 (2023)] at the experimental range of moderate Landau-level-mixing strength has recently been made for $5/2$ state. We here report that the gapped $\mathcal{A}$ phase is generic to the sequence of spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states with filling fractions $\nu = n/(nm-1)$ and $\nu = 1-n/(nm-1)$, $(n \geqslant 1,\,m\geqslant 3)$, that exhausts almost all the observed states and also predicts some states in the second Landau level for GaAs systems. Our proposed trial wavefunctions for all these states have remarkably high overlaps with the corresponding exact ground states and can support non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations with charge $e/[2(nm-1)]$. By analyzing edge modes, we predict experimentally verifiable thermal Hall conductance $2.5(\pi^2 k_B^2T/3h)$ for all the states in these sequences.
