Abstract:At filling factor $\nu=1/m$, $m$ odd integer, I present variational ground-state and excited-state wave functions, of two-dimensional electron system with homogeneous ion background, that show the condensation into a liquid-crystal state. For $m=1, 3, 5$, the ground-state energy per electron is substantially lower than the Laughlin one, for uniform liquid state.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the quantum Hall effect of two - dimensional electron systems (2DES) at a specific filling factor \(\nu = 1/m\) (where \(m\) is an odd integer). Specifically, the author proposes variational ground - state and excited - state wave functions to describe the liquid - crystal - like state condensation phenomenon of the electron - ion system. ### Main problems and research objectives 1. **Reduction of ground - state energy**: - For the cases of \(m = 1, 3, 5\), the author finds that the proposed ground - state energy is lower than that predicted by the Laughlin wave function. This indicates that the new wave function can describe the system in these states more accurately. 2. **Periodic electron density**: - The author shows that at these filling factors, the electron density exhibits periodic modulation in one direction, with a period of \(\sqrt{2\pi/m} \ell_0\), where \(\ell_0\) is the magnetic length. 3. **Fractionally quantized Hall conductivity**: - Research shows that in the cases of \(m = 3, 5, \ldots\), the Hall conductivity is fractionally quantized. 4. **Finite excitation energy gap**: - The author calculates the excitation energy gaps for \(m = 1, 3, 5, 7\) and finds that the charges of quasiparticles and quasi - holes are fractional, being \(e/m\) and \(|e|/m\) respectively. ### Research methods The author introduces a new set of single - electron wave functions, which are mainly or completely localized within the unit cell \(L_x\times L_y\). These wave functions better reflect the localization trends of ions and electrons within their respective unit cells. Based on these wave functions, the author constructs multi - body variational wave functions and calculates the total energy, electron density, and excitation energy gap of the system. ### Conclusions The author proposes a new theoretical framework to describe two - dimensional electron systems at the filling factor \(\nu = 1/m\), which reveals the ground - state characteristics of the liquid - crystal - like state, including lower ground - state energy, periodic electron density distribution, and finite excitation energy gap. These results are helpful for a deeper understanding of the multi - body interactions in the fractional quantum Hall effect and their influence on physical properties. ### Formula summary - Magnetic length: \(\ell_0=\sqrt{\frac{\hbar c}{|e|B}}\) - Unit cell length: \(L_x = \sqrt{\frac{2\pi m \ell_0^2}{N}}\) - Ground - state energy: \(\tilde{E}(m)_N=e^2 N\left[\frac{F_A^{(2)}(m)+F_C^{(1)}(m)+\Delta F_C^{(1)}(m)}{\epsilon \ell_0}\right]\) - Excitation energy gap: \(\tilde{\Delta}(m)=\frac{|\Delta(m)|}{e^2/\epsilon \ell_0}\) These formulas show how the author verifies the validity of his theoretical model through precise mathematical derivations.
