Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of quasi-spherical and zero-dimension carbon nanomaterial with a diameter less than 10 nm. They exhibit a broad absorption spanning from the ultraviolet (UV) to visible light regions and inspire growing interests due to their excellent performance. In recent years, it was identified that the CDs embedded in various inorganic matrices (IMs) can effectively activate afterglow emission by suppressing the nonradiative transitions of molecules and protecting the triplet excitons of CDs, which hold broad application prospects. Herein, recent advances in CDs@IMs are reviewed in detail, and the interaction and luminescence mechanisms between CDs and IMs are also summarized. We highlight the synthetic strategies of constructing composites and the roles of IMs in facilitating the applications of CDs in diverse areas. Finally, some directions and challenges of future research in this field are proposed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to improve the afterglow luminescence performance of carbon dots (CDs) in inorganic matrices (IMs), especially to achieve efficient afterglow emission by suppressing non - radiative transitions and protecting triplet excitons. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) from singlet to triplet**: - The paper explores how to enhance spin - orbit coupling (SOC) by introducing heteroatoms, heavy halogens or transition metals, thereby promoting the intersystem crossing process from the lowest singlet state (S1) to the lowest triplet state (T1). 2. **Suppressing non - radiative transitions**: - Through crystallization - induced, cross - linking - enhanced or matrix - assisted processes, the paper proposes multiple strategies to suppress non - radiative transitions, thereby prolonging the afterglow lifetime. 3. **Developing new inorganic matrices**: - The paper details the influence of different inorganic matrices (such as silica, boric acid, zeolite, etc.) on the afterglow performance after embedding carbon dots, and summarizes the roles of these matrices in terms of structural confinement effect, structural stability, electron/energy transfer, etc. 4. **Multifunctional applications**: - The paper also discusses the application prospects of CDs@IMs composites in fields such as bioimaging, fingerprint recognition, information security, time - delayed lighting, etc., and how to improve their performance by optimizing water solubility, quantum yield and emission wavelength. In summary, this paper aims to systematically summarize and analyze the research progress of carbon dots in inorganic matrices in recent years, propose the directions and challenges for future research, and provide guidance for the development of efficient and long - lived afterglow materials.
