Abstract:Electrical faults are in most cases dramatic events for magnets, due to the large stored energy which is potentially available to be dissipated at the fault location. After a reminder of the principles of electrostatics in Section 1, the basic mechanisms of conduction and breakdown in dielectrics are summarized in Section 2. Section 3 introduces the types and function of the electrical insulation in magnets, and Section 4 its relevant failure mechanisms. Section 5 deals with ageing and, finally, Section 6 gives some principles for testing. Though the School specifically dealt with warm magnets, for completeness some principles of dielectric insulation for superconducting accelerator magnets are briefly summarized in a dedicated appendix.

Abstract:As the deregulation of the electric power industry moves forward, there is an increasing need for cost cutting and it is becoming exceedingly important to keep track of the residual life and identify the timing of replacement for power transmission equipment that has aged for several tens of years in the field. This paper, taking up the theme of "insulation degradation phenomena and lifetime evaluation for power transmission equipment", conducted cross-sectional comparison of different types of equipment although this kind of evaluation was made independently for these equipment types so far. This paper covered six types of equipment: gas insulated switchgear (GIS), gas insulated transformers, oil filled (OF) transformers, OF cables, crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cables, and power capacitors. As a result of examining the characteristics such as electric, thermal, mechanical, and hygroscopic degradations, each of these equipment types was found to have distinctive Voltage-time (V-t) and Voltage-number (V-N) characteristics, which sometimes greatly varied from those of others. Since thermal degradation is dominant for gas insulated transformers and oil filled transformers, their lifetimes depend on the reduction of mechanical strengths of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) or insulating paper. Therefore, it is effective to diagnose decomposition products such as CO, CO2 and furfural generated in the thermal degradation mechanism. On the other hand, the influence of electric degradation has more significant impact on the other equipment types except OF cables. Such GIS components as epoxy spacers, XLPE cables, and power capacitors for which long-term ac voltages are dominant, are commonly characterized by the long-term V-t characteristics with a large gradient (small n-value). In terms of insulation structures, there is a possibility of reducing the degree of degradation by improving solids or the interface between solids and electrodes.

Abstract:Large-scale power system transmission and transformation equipment operates in high-voltage environments, placing notable requirements on the insulation strength of polymers used in core insulation frameworks. Increasing the polymer insulation performance in high-voltage environments is crucial for protecting large-capacity and integrated power equipment and ensuring the safe and stable operation of electrical devices. Here, we discuss the phenomena and the underlying mechanisms of bulk breakdown and surface flashover that lead to insulation failure in polymers and present relative strategies to increasing the performance of the insulating materials. We analyse the challenges faced by polymeric insulating materials in various extreme environments and the strategies to address them. Finally, we identify key challenges and highlight future directions and opportunities for the development of reliable polymeric insulating materials. Polymeric insulating materials are crucial for high-voltage electrical equipment. This Review describes the insulation failure mechanisms of polymeric insulating materials used in high-voltage applications, introduces ways to improve insulating performance and discusses the open challenges and future development directions.

Abstract:In this article, an extension of a conventional partial discharge (PD) approach called partial discharge echo (PDE), which is applied to different classes of electrical insulation systems of power devices, is presented. Currently, high-voltage (HV) electrical insulation is attributed not only to transmission and distribution grids but also to the industrial environment and emerging segments such as transportation electrification, i.e., electric vehicles, more-electric aircraft, and propulsion in maritime vehicles. This novel PDE methodology extends the conventional and established PD-based assessment, which is perceived to be one of the crucial indicators of HV electrical insulation integrity. PD echo may provide additional insight into the surface conditions and charge transport phenomena in a non-invasive way. It offers new diagnostic attributes that expand the evaluation of insulation conditions that are not possible by conventional PD measurements. The effects of partial discharge echo in various segments of insulation systems (such as cross-linked polyethylene [XLPE] power cable sections that contain defects and a twisted-pair helical coil that represents motor-winding insulation) are shown in this paper. The aim is to demonstrate the echo response on representative electrical insulating materials; for example, polyethylene, insulating paper, and Nomex. Comparisons of the PD echo decay times among various insulation systems are depicted, reflecting dielectric surface phenomena. The presented approach offers extended quantitative assessments of the conditions of HV electrical insulation, including its detection, measurement methodology, and interpretation.

Abstract:Insulation breakdown is the key basic scientific issue in the development of high-performance engineering dielectric materials. With the development requirements of the third-generation power grid, super/UHV AC-DC (alternating current-direct current) power equipment, smart power grid, power internet of things and power equipment under extreme conditions present higher requirements on the engineering dielectrics with excellent breakdown performance. This paper summarizes the research status of the breakdown in engineering dielectric materials and discusses the theoretical mechanism of dielectric breakdown, the performance evolution, performance improvement, new high-performance nanocomposite dielectric, and micro molecular design/regulation. Firstly, based on the time-space hierarchical relationship of dielectric breakdown, the breakdown mechanisms related to the high field and energy accumulation effects are discussed. Moreover, the electric, thermal, electric and mechanical breakdown theory is extended. Considering the breakdown process of the actual dielectric, especially the polymer dielectric, and the complex factors, the current breakdown mechanism of the dielectric still has many problems. The electric breakdown is the main form of breakdown, which can explain the inducing and early process of breakdown. However, it is difficult to explain the formation and destruction of the breakdown channel. In addition, the breakdown mechanism may change as the thickness increases, requiring consideration of thermal or mechanical effects. Space charge can explain many of the characteristics of AC and DC breakdown, as well as the deterioration of dielectric materials, but when the thickness is small, the space charge is of limited use. Secondly, the dielectric breakdown characteristics and statistical analysis are expounded, and the relationship between the intrinsic breakdown field strength of polymer dielectric and temperature, voltage form, space charge accumulation, and sample thickness is analyzed. The breakdown strength of the material and the time required for the material to break down under the fixed field strength all meet the Weibull statistical distribution. It reflects the probability that the material is broken down under a certain electric field or fails after a certain electric field. Then, the breakdown characteristics of high-performance dielectric materials and the methods of performance improvements are discussed. By adding inorganic nanoparticles to the polymer to prepare nanocomposite dielectric materials, the breakdown field strength and dielectric constant can be improved, and the energy storage density of the dielectric can be improved. In this paper, the research status of nanocomposite dielectric and the mechanism involved in interfacial interaction are described. Many research results show that a small number of nanoparticles can improve the breakdown field strength of composite materials. The interfacial zone effect introduced by nanoparticles results in the increase of the depth or density of the system’s deep traps, or the introduction of new deep traps improves the breakdown characteristics. Shallow traps are distributed on the edges of the conduction band and valence band, and it is easy to detach for the trapped carriers, which participate in the charge transport process and promote the breakdown. The modification method of polymer micro molecular design and the modification of breakdown are analyzed. The experimental results show that it is easy to destroy the conjugated structure for the ether bond structure in polyimide, which leads to the increase of the bandgap width of polymer material and the enhancement of the intrinsic breakdown field. Finally, the key problems and development trends of dielectrics with high breakdown performance are summarized based on the development demand for future power equipment. The development of new high-performance insulation materials in the future mainly include the breakdown theory, new preparation method, application technology, newly insulating material with high breakdown performance (design and regulate the molecular structure of the material). It provides a basis and strategy for the development of engineering dielectric in the new energy power system.
Breakdown Processes of Solid Composite Insulation System with Defects under High Frequency

Abstract:Behaviors of composite insulation system are strongly affected by the performance of interface between dielectrics, which mostly correlates to the direction of applied electrical field and the frequency of applied voltage. In this paper, experiments were carried out to study the breakdown characteristics of solid composite insulation system, consisted of a polyethylene (PE) film (with a copper needle electrode) and a glass slice. A sine wave power supply with a frequency range from 50 Hz to 100 kHz was established to fit our purposes. Voltage was smoothly raised from 0 kV to 5 kV. The processes of breakdown can be divided into four stages: (1) Electrical tree inception and propagation in polyethylene; (2) Sliding discharge along the interface between polyethylene and glass; (3) Streamer across the glass; (4) Return streamer initiation from the ground electrode and breakdown. A model was established to analyze the mechanism of sliding discharge between solid dielectrics. The influence of frequency on thermo effect is considered as the main causes of the experiment results, which can well explain the reason of insulation premature inactivation in high-frequency electrical equipment.
Terahertz spectroscopic study of optical and dielectric properties of typical electrical insulation materials

Abstract:Researchers and engineers are constantly developing novel techniques to accurately measure the electromagnetic properties of electrical insulators. These properties provide useful information about the insulators' performance and aging degree, which may help users to take necessary actions to prevent potential risks to the safety and stability of electric power systems. In this study, terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is used to analyze the spectral absorption and dielectric dispersion of five electrical insulation materials viz. epoxy resin (PER), E-glass fiber-reinforced polymer-matrix composite (GFRP), cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), electrical porcelain (E-PRL), and high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTVSR), in the THz frequency range (0.1 THz-1.8 THz). The refractive index, absorption coefficient, and complex relative permittivity of each sample are experimentally measured using the THz-TDS system and theoretically calculated using the original Debye model (i.e., based on the relaxation process of the individual samples’ dipoles). Experimental and theoretical results of the refractive indices and dielectric constants of the individual samples are highly correlated with 0.22% and 0.17% aggregate maximum errors, respectively. The values of dielectric constants and imaginary permittivities are found to be the highest and the lowest for E-PRL and XLPE, respectively. In terms of dielectric performance, XLPE exhibits the highest and most stable dielectric performance, followed by the E-PRL, whereas PER, HTVSR, and GFRP exhibit fluctuating and slightly less stable dielectric performance. This study shows the great potential of THz nondestructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) for the defect detection and service life prediction of electrical insulators.

Abstract:Epoxy resin (EP) exhibits excellent electrical and mechanical properties, which make it a promising material for insulation in high-voltage power modules. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to thermo-oxidative aging of EP, ultimately resulting in irreparable damage to the insulation. This study aims to analyze the impact of aging on EP dielectric properties and establish a model for assessing the aging state. Firstly, the surface morphology of EP before and after thermo-oxidative aging was observed, followed by testing the frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) curves of the sample. Subsequently, the electric field stress distribution and overall dielectric loss characteristics of the power module were studied under different aging degrees and voltage frequencies. Through decomposing FDS curves, the study revealed how thermo-oxidative aging affects the dielectric properties, and an evaluation model of aging state was constructed. The results indicate that aging can significantly increase the total dielectric loss and space charge polarization loss of the power module. The dielectric characteristic parameters corresponding to the space charge polarization were selected to establish an aging evaluation model, and the evaluation error is less than 0.064.

Abstract:Abstract This paper discusses the effect of thermal stress on the electrical properties, conduction and polarization, of low-voltage CSPE/XLPE-based power cables used in a nuclear power plant. The cables were subjected to an accelerated thermal stress at 120°C for an equivalent service period of 20, 40, 60 and 80 years. The capacitance, tan δ , resistivity at different frequencies and extended voltage response were the methods used for the investigation. A significant variation in the values of tan δ at low frequency, i.e., at 100 Hz, was observed. For the extended voltage response measurement, the decay voltage slope increased, showing the increase in the conduction particles inside the insulation material. While the decrease in return voltage slope showed that the slow polarization processes occurring at very low frequencies were decreased with aging. A strong correlation between the tan δ and decay voltage slope was also observed, which increased as the insulation aging increased. The results showed that the methods could be used for the in situ measurement of conduction and polarization phenomenon in the low-voltage cables, and hence helping in the assessment of the condition of cable insulation.

Abstract:The low-voltage electric machine (EM) is a core technology for transportation electrification, and features like high power density and compact volume are essential prerequisites. However, these requirements are usually in conflict with the reliability property of EM, especially in the safety-critical industry such as aviation. Therefore, an appropriate balance between high-performance and reliability needs to be found. Often, the over-engineering method is applied to ensure safety, although it might have a detrimental effect on the EM volume. To address this issue, the EM reliability assessment is included at the EM design stage through the physics of failure (PoF) theory. In EMs, the windings play a key role in electromechanical energy conversion, but their insulation system is subject to frequent failure and represents a reliability bottleneck. Therefore, in-depth research on the root causes of insulation breakdown is beneficial for EM reliability improvement purposes. Indeed, increasing awareness and knowledge on the mechanism of the insulation degradation process and the related lifetime modeling enables the growth of appropriate tools for achieving reliability targets since the first EM design steps. In this work, the main aspects of the insulation system, in terms of materials and manufacturing, are first reviewed. Then, the principal stresses experienced by the winding insulation system are deeply discussed with the purpose of building a profound understanding of the PoF. Finally, an overview of the most common insulation lifetime prediction models is presented, and their use for accomplishing the reliability-oriented design (RoD) and the remaining useful life (RUL) estimation are examined.

Insulation Failure of Inter-Turn Insulation in Inverter-Fed Traction Motor

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) under a sequence of high-frequency pulse is one of the key factors which lead to premature failure of turn insulation of inverter-fed motors. Aging experiments for turn insulation samples under bipolar continuous square impulse voltage were done. The number and mean quantity of PDs under impulse voltage has been studied. By means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), the microcosmic morphology of surface of turn insulation was analyzed. The results reveal that the relationship of PD parameters (PD number and mean PD quantity) and aging time is complicated. The damage to polyimide nano-composite film structure is concentrated on the degradation of polymer matrix in the presence of PDs. The residual nano-fillers remained on the surface and formed a screen layer to resist the further damage of PDs. It is the symbol of faults expanding rapidly when the floccules and voids formed on the surface, which means insulation failure.
Analysis of design and structural features of the external insulation materials of high-voltage devices

Abstract:In the article, the authors have analysed the design and structural features of various materials for external insulation of high-voltage apparatuses, namely, high-voltage equipment of stations and substations. The operational reliability of the external insulation is determined mainly by the electrical load, which is characterized by the local values of the field strength. The field strength along the insulating cover is distributed very unevenly and has a maximum value near the electrode with high voltage. Electrical isolators are used in all high-voltage apparatus of electrical transmission and distribution circuits to separate the voltage from the ground. The materials used in the development and production of electrical insulators have certain unique characteristics. These materials prevent the free passage of internal electric charges in the material, which makes it practically impossible to conduct an electric current. The ability of a material to prevent electrical conductivity is characterized by its dielectric strength. Polymer insulators allow you to combine high mechanical strength with satisfactory electrical characteristics. In such combined structures, fiberglass rods or cylinders are used as an element that withstands mechanical load. Also, the design of the internal insulation of the capacitor type, impregnated and filled with hardened epoxy resin, allows for particularly precise winding of the synthetic material and the placement of aluminium foils, which provide the capacitive levelling of the graduation and are necessary for the control and formation of the electric field. Such a field is controlled in such a way as to optimize the dimensions, mass and electrical characteristics of the high-voltage apparatus depending on the voltage class and other parameters. The protective polymer coating provides high electrical characteristics of insulators under operating conditions. It is known that during the operation of the high-voltage device, the aging rate of the external insulation is additionally enhanced due to the complex and heterogeneous structure of the insulating cover itself, as well as the influence of the surrounding environment and weather conditions. The main element of external insulation is the supporting insulating cover, in the middle of which the elements of the active part of a certain electrical device are placed. Its basis is usually a glass-epoxy cylinder (this ensures the mechanical stability of the structure), on which ribs made of organosilicon rubber are placed, which in turn ensures the electrical strength of the external insulation.
Thermally Conductive Polymer Composites for High Voltage Insulation

Abstract:Electrical insulation isolates electric conductors from the earth, which is a necessary component to ensure the safe operation of electrical equipment and electrical lines. At present, the development of electrical power equipment towards high integration and high power density has raised more rigorous requirements for electrical insulation materials. Electrical insulating materials should not only have high dielectric breakdown strength but also have high thermal conductivity to rapidly dissipate the heat generated during the operation of the equipment. This review summarizes the application and research progress of thermally conductive insulating materials in a variety of power equipment. The design, fabrication and practical application of thermally conductive insulating materials were mainly focused. Finally, the future development of thermally conductive insulating materials is envisioned.
Influence of Surface Discharge on the Deterioration Characteristics of Ethylene‐propylene Rubber Cable Insulation under Alternating Current High Voltage

Abstract:To investigate partial discharge-induced deterioration characteristics of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) cable insulation under repeated alternating current (AC) voltage on high-speed trains, an experimental platform with a column-plate EPR insulation model is established. The surface condition and breakdown voltage of insulation samples after discharge treatment are observed and measured. In addition, a fitting formula to evaluate the deterioration extent of EPR samples is proposed. The results show that under repeated discharge pretreatments, the volume resistivity increases first and decreases afterwards when discharge magnitude is low. When partial discharge (PD) intensity increases to 100 pC, the volume and surface resistivity decrease monotonously, and the decreasing rate is positively correlated with PD intensity. During PD pre-treatment, a white circle appears near the electrode and turns to pale yellow with PD intensity. For PD pretreatments of 50 and 100 pC, withstand voltage of EPR insulation increase first and decrease afterwards, and the downward trend is slow. For PD pre-treatments of 200 and 400 pC, the withstand voltage decreases significantly with the degradation time. The fitting formula model shows that under the action of a strong electric field, the relationship between the reliability of EPR insulation samples, the probability and rate of molecular chain breakage, and the intensity of discharge activity is not linear.

Abstract:Insulation systems in high‐voltage electric machines play a pivotal role in the reliable operation and longevity of the equipment. Mica‐based insulation materials have proven to possess and maintain excellent dielectric properties in the long run and prevent premature insulation degradation. Numerous qualifications tests, such as voltage endurance, are outlined in IEC and IEEE standards. The authors, however, take a different parametric approach, opting for reliability assessment of insulation systems using derived three‐parameter Weibull models. Therefore, instead of simple pass–fail criteria, empirical data is employed to determine failure rate probabilities quantitatively and objectively. Experimental data, including breakdown, dissipation factor, and partial discharge measurements, are used to construct the Weibull distribution model to predict fault and failure rates and calculate hazard functions. The rigorous examinations interpreted through the analytical model help assess insulation system resilience and particularly the impact of electrical field stress and mica content. Variation of electrical stress from 66.75 to 71.20 V/mil demonstrated how the mean time to failure of the system changed from 146.4 to 85.1 at 3 Un, hence identifying opportunities for design improvement and uncovering performance boundaries. Ultimately, the developed framework enhances comprehension of insulation system failure probabilities, guiding design decisions and ensuring a secure and reliable operation of electrical machines across applications.

Combined with a insulator from power grid company China with high-temperature heat performance, we conducted electrical and materials testing on the insulator samples. Analysis of electric field distortion in the local during the process of discharge effect was done. The possible process in the formation of defects is verified by the analysis of the material and the simulation test of the insulator degradation. The research content can provide reference for insulator material process improvement.
Partial Discharge Behaviors Excited by High-Frequency Square Pulse Voltage in Cast Resin Insulation with Thermal-Induced Defect

Abstract:The compact design of the cast resin high-frequency transformers (HFTs) allows the insulation of fine structures withstand severe high-frequency square pulse voltage stress and thermal stress. The partial discharge (PD) behaviors in the presence of thermal-induced defects are investigated. The phase-resolved PD (PRPD) pattern showed that the majority of PDs occurs on the rising and falling edges of the square pulse voltage. The PD inception voltage (PDIV), PD magnitude, and PD repetition rate increase with frequency at very low frequency and decrease with frequency at high frequency. Long charge injection time at very low frequency and the heat effect at high frequency cause the diminution of these PD parameters. The PD and breakdown characteristics are examined under progressive temperature conditions, indicating an early PD degradation and electrical failure phenomenon below the glass transition temperature (T-g). Microscopic observation revealed the formation of delamination gap defects due to the inconsistency of thermal expansion between the cast insulation and metal, which considered the cause of PDs. The decohesion model is employed to describe the structural evolution and the formation of delamination gap with varying temperatures. The model demonstrates an early damage mechanism for interfacial cohesion condition at medium temperatures and temperatures close to T-g . Additional experiment enables the inference that the release of local interfacial stress under progressive temperature may lead to the formation of damaged interfaces or microcracks, which can trigger occasional PD or instantaneous filamentary breakdown.
Thermal-mechanical combined damage analysis of 35kV dry-type air-core reactor inter-turn insulation

Abstract:In view of the inter-turn insulation failure of dry-type air-core reactors,the temperature field of reactor under the condition of airway obstruction and normal operation condition are simulated in order to get the temperature distribution and the heating point.Furthermore,thermal aging is done on the polyester film.The resistivity,tensile strengh,partial discharge (PD) as well as breakdown voltage tests are performed in order to characterize the insulation material degradation under thermal aging.The experiment results indicate that after thermal aging,volume resistivity,tensile stress as well as PDIV will obviously decrease while the changes of breakdown voltage are not obvious.This suggests that only thermal aging cannot directly cause the inter-turn breakdown.The mechanical degradation of insulation materials will cause insulation damage under mechanical stress,which will do damage to the inter-turn insulation system of the reactor.
Mechanism Characterization and Nondestructive Inspection Method of Thermal Degradation Faults in EPDM Cable Termination

Abstract:There is a significant positive proportional correlation between the condition of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) insulation and partial discharge (PD) characteristics in electric multiple units (EMUs) cable termination. Especially for the cable terminations with long service life, the aging effect of EPDM insulation material is significant due to long-term high-current load. In this article, electrical deterioration and PD development of EPDM insulation under long-term thermal degradation is conducted. During the test process, the phase-resolved PD (PRPD) analysis, PD inception voltage (PDIV), physicochemical properties, and flashover voltage of EPDM samples with different thermal degradation are measured. The relationship between the thermal degradation extent of EPDM insulation and PD characteristics is also proposed. The results show that electrical deterioration of the aged sample can be divided into four gradations by PD amplitude and pulse repetition rate. In the four gradations, the shape of the PRPD spectrum in every gradation changes significantly with different thermal degradations. Surface morphologies of EPDM insulation show different features such as gully areas and white particles. The results of the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy test indicate that the increase of oxygen-containing groups and free radicals are the key reasons for the rapid PD development process of cable insulation under different electrical gradations and thermal-oxygen degradations.
