Abstract:The History of HCI is briefly reviewed together with three HCI models and structure including CSCW, CSCL and CSCR. It is shown that a number of authorities consider HCI to be a fragmented discipline with no agreed set of unifying design principles. An analysis of usability criteria based upon citation frequency of authors is performed in order to discover the eight most recognised HCI principles.

Abstract:This essay derives a schema for specifying design principles for information technology-based artifacts in sociotechnical systems. Design principles are used to specify design knowledge in an accessible form, but there is wide variation and lack of precision across views regarding their formulation. This variation is a sign of important issues that should be addressed, including a lack of attention to human actors and levels of complexity as well as differing views on causality, on the nature of the mechanisms used to achieve goals, and on the need for justificatory knowledge. The new schema includes the well-recognized elements of design principles, including goals in a specific context and the mechanisms to achieve the goal. In addition, the schema allows: (1) consideration of the varying roles of the human actors involved and the utility of design principles, (2) attending to the complexity of IT-based artifacts through decomposition, (3) distinction of the types of causation (i.e., deterministic versus probabilistic), (4) a variety of mechanisms in achieving aims, and (5) the optional definition of justificatory knowledge underlying the design principles. We illustrate the utility of the proposed schema by applying it to examples of published research.

Abstract:Abstract Human-centered design is about understanding human needs and how design can respond to these needs. With its systemic humane approach and creativity, human-centered design can play an essential role in dealing with today’s care challenges. ‘Design’ refers to both the process of designing and the outcome of that process, which includes physical products, services, procedures, strategies and policies. In this article, we address the three key characteristics of human-centered design, focusing on its implementation in health care: (1) developing an understanding of people and their needs; (2) engaging stakeholders from early on and throughout the design process; (3) adopting a systems approach by systematically addressing interactions between the micro-, meso- and macro-levels of sociotechnical care systems, and the transition from individual interests to collective interests.

Abstract:Needs and preferences are two critical elements for starting a user-centered design. Nevertheless, there is a gap between the link of needs and preferences of user interface/experience. It is very difficult to find out why such a need could be transferred into a design preference. The exploration of dimensions in human factors could provide a theoretical foundation for the gap. Based on cultural "onion and iceberg" models and the dimensions of human factors, the present paper proposed the "onion model" of human factors as a framework to guide related activities of cross-cultural design. The dimensions from the core layer to the surface layer include motivation and preference, needs, values/beliefs/attitudes, identity (social role and self-image), cognition (from sensation to action selection), language, and behavior patterns. Besides the mentioned dimensions, emotion has an interaction across the layers. The distance between the center of a circle and the origin point of the "hidden" word shows the degree of the core. The core layers directly influence the nearest surface layer and indirectly influence the other surface layers. The onion model of human factors provides a theoretical framework for design-related activities, like evaluating existing interfaces in different cultures. The paper takes the differences of mobile apps in the U.S. and China as examples to illustrate that the onion model of human factors could provide the potential reasonable link between these differences and their possible explanations in a holistic perspective.

Abstract:This paper reviews the findings of several engineering researchers and practitioners on the topic of design for the developing world. We arrange these findings into nine guiding principles aimed at helping those who are searching for effective approaches for design for the developing world. The findings reviewed come from the mechanical engineering discipline, as well as from other engineering and nonengineering disciplines. For each principle, we provide references to various studies as a means of supporting the principle. We also provide a detailed example of each principle. Based on our own experience and based on the many papers reviewed, we provide a succinct list of suggestions for using each principle. Finally, we relate these nine principles to traditional design principles. Ultimately, we believe that the principles introduced here help overcome the challenges of design for the developing world, which are often dominated by designer unfamiliarity with poverty and foreign culture and the constraint of extreme affordability.

Abstract:Methodology, theory, and practice in the field of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) all share the goal of producing interactive software that can be used efficiently, effectively, safely, and with satisfaction. HCI is cross-disciplinary in its conduct and multidisciplinary in its roots. The central concept of HCI is usability, ease of use plus usefulness. Achieving good usability requires attention to both product and development process, particularly for the user interaction design, which should serve as requirements for the user interface software component. This paper reviews some of the theory and modeling supporting the practice of HCI, development life cycles and activities, and much of the practice that constitutes “usability engineering”. Future application areas of interest in HCI include new interaction styles, virtual environments, the World Wide Web, information visualization, and wearable computing.

Abstract:With the development of technology, the improvement of living standards, personalized designs that emphasize diversity and self-fulfillment are becoming more and more popular. As a result, designers must focus more on user needs. Traditionally, most of designers only focus on satisfying users’ functional needs and often ignore users’ emotional and psychological needs. This paper presents a design method that combines interaction design with axiomatic design. The proposed method first employs interaction design to acquire user needs with respect to three aspects: “people”, “products” and “environment” and then adopts axiomatic design to complete the conceptual design. The methodology is demonstrated and validated with a case study of children bicycle. The results show that the proposed method significantly enhances users’ experience of the product and meets more comprehensive user needs, especially in terms of users’ psychological and spiritual needs.
Reflections on the Usefulness and Limitations of Tools for Life-Centred Design

Abstract:Life-centred design decenters humans and considers all life and the far-reaching impacts of design decisions. However, little is known about the application of life-centred design tools in practice and their usefulness and limitations for con-sidering more-than-human perspectives. To address this gap, we carried out a se-ries of workshops, reporting on findings from a first-person study involving one design academic and three design practitioners. Using a popular flat-pack chair as a case study, we generatively identified and applied four tools: systems maps, actant maps, product lifecycle maps and behavioural impact canvas. We found that the tools provided a structured approach for practising systems thinking, identifying human and non-human actors, understanding their interconnected-ness, and surfacing gaps in the team's knowledge. Based on the findings, the pa-per proposes a process for implementing life-centred design tools in design pro-jects.

Abstract:Abstract The transition to industry 4.0 has impacted factories, but it also affects the entire value chain. In this sense, human-centred factors play a core role in transitioning to sustainable manufacturing processes and consumption. The awareness of human roles in Industry 4.0 is increasing, as evidenced by active work in developing methods, exploring influencing factors, and proving the effectiveness of design oriented to humans. However, numerous studies have been brought into existence but then disconnected from other studies. As a consequence, these studies in industry and research alike are not regularly adopted, and the network of studies is seemingly broad and expands without forming a coherent structure. This study is a unique attempt to bridge the gap through the literature characteristics and lessons learnt derived from a collection of case studies regarding human-centred design (HCD) in the context of Industry 4.0. This objective is achieved by a well-rounded systematic literature review whose special unit of analysis is given to the case studies, delivering contributions in three ways: (1) providing an insight into how the literature has evolved through the cross-disciplinary lens; (2) identifying what research themes associated with design methods are emerging in the field; (3) and setting the research agenda in the context of HCD in Industry 4.0, taking into account the lessons learnt, as uncovered by the in-depth review of case studies.

Abstract:<span>As digital technologies play a growing role in healthcare, human-centered design is gaining traction in global health. Amid concern that this trend offers little more than buzzwords, our paper clarifies how human-centered design matters for global health equity. First, we contextualize how the design discipline differs from conventional approaches to research and innovation in global health, by emphasizing craft skills and iterative methods that reframe the relationship between design and implementation. Second, while there is no definitive agreement about what the 'human' part means, it often implies stakeholder participation, augmenting human skills, and attention to human values. Finally, we consider the practical relevance of human-centered design by reflecting on our experiences accompanying health workers through over seventy digital health initiatives. In light of this material, we describe human-centered design as a flexible yet disciplined approach to innovation that prioritizes people's needs and concrete experiences in the design of complex systems.</span>

Abstract:AbstractIn positive psychology, aspects of everyday human life that extend beyond the zero-state play a central role. Positive user experience (UX) based on positive psychology can potentially offer improvement in the design of user interfaces at a fundamental level. The parallel whereby positive psychology developed from classical psychology has also taken place in human-computer interaction (HCI) research. Software ergonomics in the world of work examines the how and the why regarding the negative effects on users. Usability has simplified the use of the application. With the increase in complex problem situations approached from a problem-solving perspective, we must move away from the concept of solution. The results and procedures from human-centered methods and models are not sufficient for the design process of fulfilling needs. On the other hand, the findings from positive UX research have not yet incorporated into the human-centric user interface/user experience design. These statements reflect why there are efforts to create new opportunities and possibilities to integrate positive user experience into the design process or introduce a completely different approach to HCI design.
Principles to Facilitate Social Inclusion for Design-Oriented Research

Abstract:We develop principles that facilitate socially inclusive design-oriented research with marginalized groups. Building on the recognition that the research process must be informed by theoretical perspectives about social inclusion, our effort begins with an empirical investigation of a multiyear research project that designed several IT-based solutions for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We treat the efforts to design each solution as a “case,” capture primary data from multiple sources, and analyze it in light of three facets of social inclusion drawn from prior work: self-determination, belongingness, and social capital. The findings are interpreted to derive five principles for a socially inclusive design-oriented research process: (1) respecting multiperspective problem ownership and integrated solution design, (2) surfacing emic contributions to guide artifact design, (3) leveraging the support network to shape artifact design and refine research conduct, (4) customizing design-evaluate cycles with inclusive practices, and (5) pursuing authenticity in research collaborations. We elaborate each principle with connections to different facets of social inclusion, guidelines suggested by our empirical investigation, and a mapping against contemporary design-oriented research approaches. The five principles suggest key directions to facilitate a socially inclusive design-oriented research process when working with marginalized groups. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications for IS scholars, and pointers for using design-oriented approaches for greater social inclusion of marginalized populations.

Abstract:Over the past decade, HCI researchers, design researchers, and practitioners have increasingly addressed ethics-focused issues through a range of theoretical, methodological and pragmatic contributions to the field. While many forms of design knowledge have been proposed and described, we focus explicitly on knowledge that has been codified as "methods," which we define as any supports for everyday work practices of designers. In this paper, we identify, analyze, and map a collection of 63 existing ethics-focused methods intentionally designed for ethical impact. We present a content analysis, providing a descriptive record of how they operationalize ethics, their intended audience or context of use, their "core" or "script," and the means by which these methods are formulated, articulated, and languaged. Building on these results, we provide an initial definition of ethics-focused methods, identifying potential opportunities for the development of future methods to support design practice and research.

Abstract:Out of the three major approaches to ethics, virtue ethics is uniquely well suited as a moral guide in the digital age, given the pace of sociotechnical change and the complexity of society. Virtue ethics focuses on the traits, situations and actions of moral agents, rather than on rules (as in deontology) or outcomes (consequentialism). Even as interest in ethics has grown within HCI, there has been little engagement with virtue ethics. To address this lacuna and demonstrate further opportunities for ethical design, this paper provides an overview of virtue ethics for application in HCI. It reviews existing HCI work engaging with virtue ethics, provides a primer on virtue ethics to correct widespread misapprehensions within HCI, and presents a deductive literature review illustrating how existing lines of HCI research resonate with the practices of virtue cultivation, paving the way for further work in virtue-oriented design.

Abstract:Value sensitive design is a theoretically grounded approach to the design of technology that accounts for human values in a principled and systematic manner throughout the design process. In this article we provide a survey of 14 value sensitive design methods: (1) direct and indirect stakeholder analysis; (2) value source analysis; (3) co-evolution of technology and social structure; (4) value scenario; (5) value sketch; (6) value-oriented semi- structured interview; (7) scalable information dimensions; (8) value-oriented coding manual; (9) value-oriented mockup, prototype, or field deployment; (10) ethnographically informed inquiry regarding values and technology; (11) model of informed consent online; (12) value dams and flows; (13) value sensitive action-reflection model; and (14) Envisioning Cards TM. Each of these methods is honed to the investigation of values in technology, serving such purposes as stakeholder identification and legitimation, value representation and elicitation, and values analysis. While presented individually, the methods are intended to be integrated in a robust value sensitive design process. The survey article begins with a brief summary of value sensitive design methodology and theoretical constructs. We next provide an overview of the 14 methods. Then, we turn to a broader discussion of value sensitive design practice, focussing on some methodological strategies and heuristics to support skillful value sensitive design practice. Following the broad discussion of practice, we illustrate one method in action—value scenarios—providing details on its range of purposes and contexts. We conclude with reflections on core characteristics of value sensitive design methodology, and heuristics for innovation.

Abstract:AbstractAccessibility and equal opportunities for all in the digital age have become increasingly important over the last decade. In one form or another, the concept of accessibility is being considered to a greater or smaller extent in most projects that develop interactive systems. However, the concept varies among different professions, cultures and interest groups. Design for all, universal access and inclusive design are all different names of approaches that largely focus on increasing the accessibility of the interactive system for the widest possible range of use. But, in what way do all these concepts differ and what is the underlying philosophy in all of these concepts? This paper aims at investigating the various concepts used for accessibility, its methodological and historical development and some philosophical aspects of the concept. It can be concluded that there is little or no consensus regarding the definition and use of the concept, and consequently, there is a risk of bringing less accessibility to the target audience. Particularly in international standardization the lack of consensus is striking. Based on this discussion, the authors argue for a much more thorough definition of the concept and discuss what effects it may have on measurability, conformance with standards and the overall usability for the widest possible range of target users.

Abstract:Esslinger believed that the 1950s was the era of production, the 1960s was the era of research and development, the 1970s was the era of marketing, the 1980s was the era of finance, and the 1990s was the era of integration, today is the era of intelligence. With the development of science and technology, human–computer interaction become an indispensable dynamic in life. How to strengthen human–computer interaction to make the product design more humanity is very important, so we need to think and research from the user’s perspective. Design plays an important role in artificial intelligence – every step from imagination to product cannot be separated from design. It is also very important for interface design in human–computer interaction design. No matter what kind of product it is, the first thing it will show people is the visual experience, and then it will produce interaction and deep experience. Therefore, design can be said to be the explorer, which must be ahead of the public thinking. In other words, design is the visual present one and design is the practitioner of imagination. Only in this way can we design works that satisfy the public. In intelligent interaction, what the design embodies is to allow users to have more in-depth experience and abandon the external form of design. Designers begin to think more deeply about what design means to people, cities and life. What does design shape the user experience? Esslinger once said, “the purpose of design is to create a more human environment. My goal has always been to design mainstream products as art.” According to the functions and characteristics of multi-sensory human–computer interaction interface, the design principles of simplicity and aesthetics, unity and diversity, ease of use and interactivity, static and dynamic, and rationality and sensibility are put forward.
