Abstract:Frequency-modulated (FM) combs form spontaneously in free-running semiconductor lasers and possess a vast potential for spectroscopic applications. Despite recent progress in obtaining a conclusive theoretical description, experimental FM combs often exhibit non-ideal traits, which prevents their widespread use. Here we explain this by providing a clear theoretical and experimental study of the impact of the higher-order dispersion on FM combs. We reveal that spectrally-dependent dispersion is detrimental for comb performance and leads to a decreased comb bandwidth and the appearance of spectral holes. These undesirable traits can be mended by applying a radio-frequency modulation of the laser bias. We show that electrical injection-locking of the laser leads to a significant increase of the comb bandwidth, a uniform-like spectral amplitudes, and the rectification of the instantaneous frequency to recover a nearly linear frequency chirp of FM combs.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the influence of high-order dispersion on both temporal and spectral characterizations of microresonator-based optical frequency combs. The moment method is utilized to study the temporal dynamics of intracavity solitons. The theoretical and numerical results indicate the temporal shifts are induced by high-odd-order dispersion rather than high-even-order dispersion. The role of high-order dispersion on the frequency comb envelopes is carefully elucidated through analyzing the intracavity Cherenkov radiations. We further demonstrate that the spectra envelope of an ultrabroadband optical frequency comb can be engineered by using dispersion profiles with multiple zero dispersion wavelengths.

Abstract:Dispersion engineering of microring resonators is crucial for optical frequency comb applications, to achieve targeted bandwidths and powers of individual comb teeth. However, conventional microrings only present two geometric degrees of freedom -- width and thickness -- which limits the degree to which dispersion can be controlled. We present a technique where we tune individual resonance frequencies for arbitrary dispersion tailoring. Using a photonic crystal microring resonator that induces coupling to both directions of propagation within the ring, we investigate an intuitive design based on Fourier synthesis. Here, the desired photonic crystal spatial profile is obtained through a Fourier relationship with the targeted modal frequency shifts, where each modal shift is determined based on the corresponding effective index modulation of the ring. Experimentally, we demonstrate several distinct dispersion profiles over dozens of modes in transverse magnetic polarization. In contrast, we find that the transverse electric polarization requires a more advanced model that accounts for the discontinuity of the field at the modulated interface. Finally, we present simulations showing arbitrary frequency comb spectral envelope tailoring using our Frequency synthesis approach.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated (FM) combs feature flat intensity spectra with a linear frequency chirp, useful for metrology and sensing applications. Generating FM combs in semiconductor lasers generally requires a fast saturable gain, usually limited by the intrinsic gain medium properties. Here, we show how a spatial modulation of the laser gain medium can enhance the gain saturation dynamics and nonlinearities to generate self-starting FM combs. We demonstrate this with tapered planarized THz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). While simple ridge THz QCLs typically generate combs which are a mixture of amplitude and frequency modulation, the on-chip field enhancement resulting from extreme spatial confinement leads to an ultrafast saturable gain regime, generating a pure FM comb with a flatter intensity spectrum, a clear linear frequency chirp and very intense beatnotes up to -30 dBm. The observed linear frequency chirp is reproduced using a spatially inhomogeneous mean-field theory model which confirms the crucial role of field enhancement. In addition, the modified spatial temperature distribution within the waveguide results in an improved hightemperature comb operation, up to a heat sink temperature of 115 K, with comb bandwidths of 600 GHz at 90 K. The spatial inhomogeneity also leads to dynamic switching between various harmonic states in the same device.

Abstract:Free-electron radiations prompt numerous advanced applications such as particle detectors, biological imaging, and light sources from microwave to X-ray. While their polarization, directionality, and phase could be shaped with prosperous metamaterials, their natural broad spectra have not been tailored to yield frequency combs, which are state-of-the-art technology in metrology, spectroscopy, and precision frequency synthesis. Here, the frequency comb directly emitted from the free-electron radiation is demonstrated by simultaneously exciting a series of modes with equidistant spectral lines. Both the offset and repetition frequencies are readily adapted by structural parameters, and relative spectrum intensities between the comb teeth are customizable based on selective coupling, thus permitting flexible tunability over broadband. Moreover, the repetition rate is experimentally verified at the microwave regime. The proposed methodology implies that swift electrons present a natural and versatile platform for generating frequency combs, facilitating the development of metrology and spectroscopy in the terahertz band.

Abstract:Femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs have served as the cornerstone in precision spectroscopy, all-optical atomic clocks, and measurements of ultrafast dynamics. Recently frequency microcombs based on nonlinear microresonators have been examined, exhibiting remarkable precision approaching that of laser frequency combs, on a solid-state chip-scale platform and from a fundamentally different physical origin. Despite recent successes, to date, the real-time dynamical origins and high-power stabilities of such frequency microcombs have not been fully addressed. Here, we unravel the transitional dynamics of frequency microcombs from chaotic background routes to femtosecond mode-locking in real time, enabled by our ultrafast temporal magnifier metrology and improved stability of dispersion-managed dissipative solitons. Through our dispersion-managed oscillator, we further report a stability zone that is more than an order-of-magnitude larger than its prior static homogeneous counterparts, providing a novel platform for understanding ultrafast dissipative dynamics and offering a new path towards high-power frequency microcombs.

Abstract:Although invented for precision measurements of single atomic transitions, frequency combs have also become a versatile tool for broadband spectroscopy in recent years. Here, we present a novel and simple approach for broadband spectroscopy, combining the accuracy of an optical fibre-laser-based frequency comb with the ease of use of a tunable external cavity diode laser. The scheme enables broadband and fast spectroscopy of more than 4 THz bandwidth at scanning speeds up to 1 THz s−1 at sub-MHz resolution. We use this method for spectroscopy of microresonator modes and precise measurements of their dispersion, which is relevant in the context of broadband optical frequency comb generation, having recently been demonstrated in these devices. Moreover, we find excellent agreement between measured microresonator dispersion with predicted values from finite element simulations, and we show that microresonator dispersion can be tailored by adjusting their geometrical properties.

Dispersion engineering in a Brillouin fiber laser cavity for Kerr frequency comb formation

Abstract:We conduct numerical and experimental investigations on Kerr comb generation in a nonlinear and non-reciprocal fiber cavity by leveraging both stimulated Brillouin backscattering and cascaded four-wave mixing. By engineering the net cavity dispersion to be either normal or anomalous, we enable the formation of diverse patterns and localized structures in the cavity field. The comb's properties depend crucially on the mismatch between the frequency spacing of the bichromatic pump and the free spectral range of the Brillouin laser cavity in both cases. Particularly, in the anomalous regime, adjusting this parameter yields coherent, stable frequency combs in the modulation instability regime. This allows control and expansion of the spectral bandwidth up to 2 THz in normal dispersion and to 6 THz under anomalous net dispersion. This versatile and easily reconfigurable method holds potential for applications in high-speed communications and microwave synthesis.

Abstract:Since its invention, optical frequency comb has revolutionized a broad range of subjects from metrology to spectroscopy. The recent development of microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs) provides a unique pathway to create frequency comb systems on a chip. Indeed, microcomb-based spectroscopy, ranging, optical synthesizer, telecommunications and astronomical calibrations have been reported recently. Critical to many of the integrated comb systems is the broad coverage of comb spectra. Here, microcombs of more than two-octave span (450 nm to 2,008 nm) is demonstrated through χ (2) and χ (3) nonlinearities in a deformed silica microcavity. The deformation lifts the circular symmetry and creates chaotic tunneling channels that enable broadband collection of intracavity emission with a single waveguide. Our demonstration introduces a new degree of freedom, cavity deformation, to the microcomb studies, and our microcomb spectral range is useful for applications in optical clock, astronomical calibration and biological imaging.
Fundamental scaling limits and bandwidth shaping of frequency-modulated combs

Abstract:Frequency-modulated (FM) combs based on active cavities like quantum cascade lasers have recently emerged as promising light sources in many spectral regions. Unlike passive modelocking, which uses amplitude modulation to generate amplitude modulation, FM combs use phase modulation to generate phase modulation. They can therefore be regarded as a phase-domain version of passive modelocking. However, while the ultimate scaling laws of passive modelocking have long been known -- Haus showed in 1975 that pulses have a bandwidth proportional to effective gain bandwidth -- the limits of FM combs have been much less clear. Here, we show that FM combs are governed by the same fundamental limits, producing combs whose bandwidths are linear in the effective gain bandwidth. Not only do we show theoretically that the diffusive effect of gain curvature limits comb bandwidth, we also show experimentally how this limit can be increased. By adding carefully designed resonant-loss structures that are evanescently coupled to the cavity of a terahertz laser, we reduce the curvature and increase the effective gain bandwidth of the laser, demonstrating bandwidth enhancement. Our results give a new degree of freedom for the creation of active chip-scale combs and can be applied to a wide array of cavity geometries.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Microwave signals of extreme spectral purity are of great interest in a large variety of applications ranging from deep-space navigation systems to synchronization of large scale facilities as well as pulse-Doppler radars and precision spectroscopy. Photonic microwave generation schemes, in which a mode-locked laser is synchronized to an ultra-stable laser reference, allow unparalleled levels of phase noise through photodetection of the low-jitter optical train of pulses [1]. However, the photodetection process is known to introduce excess phase noise by transferring the baseband amplitude noise of the mode-locked laser to the phase noise of the output radio-frequency carrier [2, 3], hereby spoiling the quality of the phase transfer. Although this conversion is easily observed, complete understanding of its process and its relation with other parameters remains unattended.We will report on the impact of the dispersion of the ultra-short optical pulses from fiber-based optical frequency combs on the amplitude to phase noise conversion coefficient. In our scheme, we use femtosecond pulse shaping techniques to introduce known amounts of phase delay in the path of the laser while monitoring the amplitude to phase noise conversion coefficient. In order to simulate the effect of dispersion we introduce linear frequency-dependent phase delay by performing quadratic spectral phase filtering of the output spectrum of the comb.
Engineering the spectral bandwidth of quantum cascade laser frequency combs

Abstract:Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) facilitate compact optical frequency comb sources that operate in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral regions, where many molecules have their fundamental absorption lines. Enhancing the optical bandwidth of these chip-sized lasers is of paramount importance to address their application in broadband high-precision spectroscopy. In this work, we provide a numerical and experimental investigation of the comb spectral width and show how it can be optimized to obtain its maximum value defined by the laser gain bandwidth. The interplay of nonoptimal values of the resonant Kerr nonlinearity and the cavity dispersion can lead to significant narrowing of the comb spectrum and reveals the best approach for dispersion compensation. The implementation of high mirror losses is shown to be favourable and results in proliferation of the comb sidemodes. Ultimately, injection locking of QCLs by modulating the laser bias around the roundtrip frequency provides a stable external knob to control the FM comb state and recover the maximum spectral width of the unlocked laser state.

Precision Frequency Transfer with Fiber Frequency Combs

Abstract:We review methods for precision transfer of frequencies across broad optical wavelength ranges. Single-branch supercontinuum generation allows for a frequency transfer stability of < 1 × 10−17 in 1 s across an octave. With supercontinuum stitching, highly coherent supercontinuum spectra spanning across more than two octaves are generated. With noise cancellation techniques a relative frequency transfer stability of ≈ 2 × 10−18 in 1 s can be achieved. Highly stable frequency transfer along with a maximization of power per mode at multiple freely selectable frequency bands is further enabled via pulse shaping techniques. We also include a brief review of general fiber combs and research aimed at frequency extension of frequency combs covering the whole spectral range from the XUV to the mid IR, power scaling of frequency combs as well as low noise microwave and mmwave technology enabled with frequency combs.

Abstract:We experimentally study the factors that limit the span in frequency combs derived from the crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators. We observe that cavity dispersion is the key property that governs the parameters of the combs resulting from cascaded four wave mixing process. Two different regimes of comb generation are observed depending on the precise cavity dispersion behavior at the pump wavelength. In addition, the comb generation efficiency is found to be affected by the crossing of modes of different families. The influence of Raman lasing is discussed.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have revolutionized precision measurement, time-keeping, and molecular spectroscopy. A substantial effort has developed around "microcombs": integrating comb-generating technologies into compact, reliable photonic platforms. Current approaches for generating these microcombs involve either the electro-optic (EO) or Kerr mechanisms. Despite rapid progress, maintaining high efficiency and wide bandwidth remains challenging. Here, we introduce a new class of microcomb -- an integrated optical frequency comb generator that combines electro-optics and parametric amplification to yield a frequency-modulated optical parametric oscillator (FM-OPO). In stark contrast to EO and Kerr combs, the FM-OPO microcomb does not form pulses but maintains operational simplicity and highly efficient pump power utilization with an output resembling a frequency-modulated laser. We outline the working principles of FM-OPO and demonstrate them by fabricating the complete optical system in thin-film lithium niobate (LNOI). We measure pump to comb internal conversion efficiency exceeding 93% (34% out-coupled) over a nearly flat-top spectral distribution spanning approximately 1,000 modes (approximately 6 THz). Compared to an EO comb, the cavity dispersion rather than loss determines the FM-OPO bandwidth, enabling broadband combs with a smaller RF modulation power. The FM-OPO microcomb, with its robust operational dynamics, high efficiency, and large bandwidth, contributes a new approach to the field of microcombs and promises to herald an era of miniaturized precision measurement, and spectroscopy tools to accelerate advancements in metrology, spectroscopy, telecommunications, sensing, and computing.

Abstract:Since their inception, optical frequency combs have transformed a broad range of technical and scientific disciplines, spanning time keeping to navigation. Recently, dual comb spectroscopy has emerged as an attractive alternative to traditional Fourier transform spectroscopy, since it offers higher measurement sensitivity in a fraction of the time. Midwave infrared (mid-IR) frequency combs are especially promising as an effective means for probing the strong fundamental absorption lines of numerous chemical and biological agents. Mid-IR combs have been realized via frequency down-conversion of a near-IR comb, by optical pumping of a micro-resonator, and beyond 7 μm by four-wave mixing in a quantum cascade laser. In this work, we demonstrate an electrically-driven frequency comb source that spans more than 1 THz of bandwidth centered near 3.6 μm. This is achieved by passively mode-locking an interband cascade laser (ICL) with gain and saturable absorber sections monolithically integrated on the same chip. The new source will significantly enhance the capabilities of mid-IR multi-heterodyne frequency comb spectroscopy systems.

Abstract:Multi-spectral frequency combs provide frontier architectures for laser standoff spectroscopy, optical clockwork, and high-capacity optical communications. Frequency microcombs, aided by their high-quality resonances and inherent third-order nonlinear susceptibility, have demonstrated remarkable impact in frequency metrology and synthesis. However, microcombs are often with limited spectral bandwidth bounded by the intrinsic second-order chromatic dispersion and the consequently low intensities at the spectral edges. To enhance the applications of frequency combs, a spectrally-broad comb generation scheme is often desired. Here we report coherent satellite clusters in multi-spectral regenerative frequency microcombs with enhanced intensities at the octave points and engineered frequency span. Beyond the conventional bandwidth of parametric oscillation, the regenerative satellites are facilitated by higher-order dispersion control allowing for multi-phase-matching in the microcavities. The frequency span of the multi-spectral regenerative satellites is deterministically controlled from 57 THz to 126 THz by pumping at C- and L- bands. We demonstrate that the regenerative satellite preserves the coherence with the central comb through the nonlinear parametric process. We further show the mirrored appearance of the satellite transition dynamics including each comb state that are simultaneously observed at the central comb. These multi-spectral regenerative satellites extend the scope of parametric-based frequency combs and provide a unique platform with wide applications.
