Abstract:CdxZn1−xO alloys, as a transparent conducting oxide, have recently attracted much attention for potential optoelectronic applications. In this letter, we report a hydrostatic pressure-induced phase transition of CdxZn1−xO alloys from the wurtzite to the rocksalt structure and its phase diagram probed using a diamond anvil cell. It is found that the transition pressure, determined by changes in optical and structural properties, depends sensitively on the composition. As the Cd content increases, the critical pressure decreases, until at x = 0.67 where the alloy is intrinsically stable in the rocksalt phase even at ambient pressure. The wurtzite phase is light emitting with a direct bandgap that slightly widens with increasing pressure, while the rocksalt phase has a much wider bandgap that is indirect. The pressure-sensitive light emission and phase transition may find potential applications in fields such as stress sensing and energy storage.

Abstract:We report the observation of two pressure-induced quantum phase transitions in a YbB6 single crystal, i.e., from a topologically trivial semiconductor to an intermediate semimetal and then from the semimetal to a possible topologically nontrivial high-pressure gapped phase through in situ high-pressure transport and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements. Our high-pressure absorption results reveal that the mixed-valence state in pressurized YbB6 above 15 GPa plays an important role in the formation of the high-pressure state with a reopened gap. These high-pressure results may be helpful for shedding light on the intriguing relation between the topology and the 4f electrons in the rare-earth hexaborides.

Abstract:The oxygenic motifs (e.g., O2–, O22– O22–, and O2–) that are present in compounds have a substantial effect on their electronic structure and behavior. Herein, first-principles swarm-intelligence crystal structural searches reveal that the reaction between Y and O under high pressure leads to the formation of novel compounds with unique properties. Several O-rich Y-O compounds (e.g., YO2, Y2O5, and YO3) emerge as being stable. It is shown that the oxygenic motifs found within the stable species depend upon the oxygen content and pressure (e.g., O2– in YO and Y2O3, the coexistence of O2– and O22– in YO2 and Y2O5, O22– in Pm-3 YO3, and O2– in Cmcm YO3), and are accompanied by a transition in the electronic structure from superconducting to metallic to semiconducting. Notably, the Cmcm symmetry YO3 phase, consisting of a 13-fold coordinated face-sharing polyhedron with 15 faces, can be classified as a transition metal (TM) superoxide. The long sought-after bulk yttrium monoxide (YO) is shown to become stable at high pressure. NaCl-type YO is superconducting with a critical temperature (Tc) of 13.0 K at 25 GPa, becoming the TM monoxide with the highest known Tc. Our work will inspire future studies exploring the chemistry and properties of O-rich TM oxides at high pressure.

Abstract:We investigated high-pressure induced phase transitions in Y2O3 and Eu-doped Y2O3 (Y2O:Eu3+) using angular dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). With increasing pressure, we observed a series of phase transformations in Y2O3:Eu3+, which followed a structure sequence of cubic→monoclinic→hexagonal, while Y2O3 followed a sequence of cubic→hexagonal. During decompression, both hexagonal structured Y2O3 and Y2O3:Eu3+ transformed into monoclinic phases which were quenchable back to ambient pressure. Raman and PL measurements shed additional light on the different phase transition behavior in these two samples.

Abstract:An isostructural phase transition and a cubic to tetragonal phase transition in spin-frustrated pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7 (DTO) at 35 GPa and 46 GPa, respectively, were detected by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy studies at room temperature under high pressure. The band gap of DTO gradually increased with the increasing pressure up to 20 GPa, after which it narrowed significantly around 35 GPa, and further manifested with a slight discontinuity around 46 GPa. Below 35 GPa, the evolution of band gap with pressure maintained a close relationship with the Ti-O bond length and the distortion of TiO6 octahedron. The remarkable narrowing of the band gap around 35 GPa implied the changes of the band structure and confirmed the isostructural phase transition. These findings provide an in-depth understanding of the evolution of the structure and the band gap of DTO under high pressure.

Abstract:High-pressure structural evolution of CeOCl, a lanthanide oxychloride, was investigated by in situ high-pressure Raman scattering and first-principles calculations. We report the novel observation of discontinuities in Raman wavenumber at the pressure of approximately 7 GPa, which are related to an isostructural phase transformation caused by an increase of Bader charge transfer from Ce to Cl and O. In addition, the mode-Gruneisen parameters (of CeOCl) were given and discussed. This is helpful for us to better understand applications of the Ce-based compounds.

Abstract:Coexistence of non-trivial band topology and intrinsic magnetic order not only leads to emergent phenomena but also allows for the tunability of the exotic properties from different degrees of freedom. By performing transport measurements at synergetic extreme conditions, here we report on pressure engineering of intertwined structural, magnetic, and topological phase transitions in an antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal NdSb. We show that the original antiferromagnetic state is strengthened in the low-pressure region while destabilized upon further compression close to the critical pressure where a structural transition from Fm-3m phase to P4/mmm phase takes place at PC∼18 GPa, forming a yurt-shaped evolution in response to magnetic field, pressure and temperature. Concomitant with the structural transition, NdSb simultaneously carries on a magnetic transition to the ferromagnetic state. Moreover, theoretical calculations unravel that the ferromagnetic tetragonal phase presents nontrivial features of Weyl fermions. These findings offer new important insight into the microscopic interplay among lattice, spin, and relativistic fermions in lanthanide monopnictides.

Abstract:The realization of high tunability in layered van der Waals halides may create new interesting optical and op-toelectronic properties. These soft materials are particularly sensitive to external stress or pressure, suggesting a feasible route to pinpoint their structure with extraordinary behavior. However, a very sensitive pressure response usually lead to a detrimental phase transition and/or lattice distortion, making the approach of ma-terials manipulation in a continuous manner remain challenging. Here, the extremely weak interlayer coupling and high tunability of layered RhI3 crystals are observed. A pressure-driven phase transition occurs at a moderate pressure of 5 GPa, interlinking to a change of layer stack mode. Strikingly, such a phase transition does not affect the tendency of quasi-linear bandgap narrowing, and a metallization with an ultra-broad tunability of 1.3 eV redshift is observed at higher pressures. Moreover, the carrier concentration of RhI3 increases by 4 orders of magnitude at 30 GPa, and the photocurrent enhances by 5 orders of magnitude at 7.8 GPa. These findings create new opportunities for exploring, tuning, and understanding the van der Waals halides by harnessing their un-usual feature of a layered structure, which is promising for future devices based on materials-by-design that are atomically thin.
Pressure induced band structure evolution of halide perovskites: a first-principles atomic and electronic structure study

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations have been conducted to draw a broad picture of pressure induced band structure evolution in various phases of organic and inorganic halide perovskite materials. Under a wide range of pressure applied, distinct band structure behaviors including magnitude change of band gap, direct-indirect/indirect-direct band gap transitions and CBM/VBM shifts, have been observed between organic and inorganic perovskites among different phases. Through atomic and electronic structure calculations, band gap narrowing/widening has been rationalized through crystal orbitals coupling transformations; direct-indirect mutual transitions were explained based on structural symmetry evolution; different VBM/CBM shifts behaviors between organic and inorganic perovskites were analyzed focusing on orientation and polarity of molecules/atoms outside the octahedrals. These results provide a comprehensive guidance for further experimental investigations on pressure engineering of perovskite materials.

At room temperature, all these four compounds follow the phase transition route from orthorhombic to hexagonal phase at 5.5-20.6 GPa. The pressure ranges of phase transition are 5.5-9.3, 8.4-11.9, 13.5-20.3, and 14.8-20.6 GPa for GdF3, TbF3, YbF3, and LuF3, respectively. In combination with first-principles calculations, we infer that all orthorhombic REF3 members from Sm-Lu and Y obey the same orthorhombic-to-hexagonal phase transition rules under high pressures. For lanthanide trifluorides, the transition pressures increase as zero pressure volumes of REF3 in the orthorhombic phase become smaller. As the calculation results show, this is because the difference in value of energy from the two structures is larger. This work not only provides precise structural change but also benefits the understanding of two typical structures for rare-earth trifluorides, which may play a significant role in the applications of REF3.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition And Band Gap Engineering In Propylammonium Lead Bromide Perovskite

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites offer tremendous potential in developing optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices because of their spectacular band gap properties. Pressure has been demonstrated to be able to modulate their band gap in the energy range of visible spectrum, except in the high-energy region of similar to 2.5-3.0 eV. In this work, we present a high-pressure study of propylammonium lead bromide perovskite and reveal that the band gap can be tuned between the energy of violet light and yellow light (similar to 3.0-2.2 eV) by pressure. Upon compression, the band gap of this material is progressively altered from similar to 3.0 eV at ambient pressure to 2.28 eV at 9.5 GPa. At a relatively low pressure of 1.3 GPa, a triclinic-to-monoclinic structural transition is also observed with a similar to 4.7% band gap reduction. Interestingly, in the pressure range of 9.5-20 GPa, the amorphization of the material leads to an anomalously enlarged band gap as a result of the disorder of organic cations, the slightly distorted [PbBr6](4) octahedra. The variation of band gap of this perovskite at high pressures is explored to be closely attributed to the lattice density and octahedra distortion of amorphous phase. Findings of this work demonstrate that the band gap of organometal perovskites realizes the first redshift from the violet to visible region through the control of lattice parameter and crystal symmetry at high pressures, providing potential communication and sensing devices ranging from violet to yellow at high pressures. Our results also improve the understanding of the structures and properties of organometal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Perovskite material studies encompass many fields such as energy harvesting, superconductivity, magnetism, and beyond. Thus, it is very important to investigate their structural varieties in external environments. Here, the pressure-induced structure change of a distorted perovskite, Y0.7Lu0.3AlO3, was examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Upon compression, it underwent an isostructural transition near 22 GPa. The quenchable high-pressure phase had a much higher bulk modulus than the low-pressure phase. This work shows the flexibility of perovskite distortion and will help to understand the property anomalies in prevailing perovskite ABO3 systems and design more functional materials.
Pressure-Induced Li+ Migration and Second-Order Phase Transition in LiNbO3: Yb/Er Nanocrystals Revealed by Variable-Pressure Optical and Impedance Studies

Abstract:Pressure is a key thermodynamic parameter for modulating the crystal lattice and physical properties of ionic conductors. It is essential to probe the pressure-induced ion migration and the resulting structure variation in ionic conductors; yet, it remains a challenge to date. Herein, we report an in situ study on the ionic conductor of LiNbO3: Yb/Er nanocrystals were characterized with variable-pressure optical and impedance spectroscopy. It is found that LiNbO3: Yb/Er nanocrystals undergo a second-order phase transition near 6 GPa, which is triggered by Li+ migration. The surge of impedance upon elevated pressure may be dominated by the fracture of the symbiotic catenuliform nanocrystals and the rearrangement of the nanocrystals. The diffusion coefficient of Li+ should be combinedly influenced by the dynamic interface among nanocrystals, phase transition, and the newly formed defects. The study not only presents an alternative optical technique to probe the pressure-induced ion migration but also gives a perspective on the influence of crystal morphology on pressure-induced Li+ ion diffusion in ionic conductors.

Abstract:Abstract Research on rare-earth hexaborides mainly focuses on tuning the electronic structure from insulating-to-metallic state and vice versa (referred as exotic phenomena) by high pressure experiments via displacive phase transformations, however, the structural evolution that contributing to this underlying failure mechanism remains not well understood. Herein, we examined the pressure induced structural evolution through a model system of europium hexaboride (EuB6). Transmission electron microscopy reveal that the nanoscale amorphous shear bands mediated by dislocations play a decisive role in deformation failure of EuB6 subjected to high pressure nanoidentation at room temperature. Density functional theory simulations confirm that these amorphous bands evolve by breaking B-B bonds within B6 octahedron of EuB6 during shear deformation. Our results underscore an important damage mechanism in hard and fragile hexaborides at high shear pressures.

Abstract:Pressure is an effective and clean way to modify the electronic structures of materials, cause structural phase transitions and even induce the emergence of superconductivity. Here, we predicted several new phases of the ZrXY family at high pressures using the crystal structures search method together with first-principle calculations. In particular, the ZrGeS compound undergoes an isosymmetric phase transition from P4/nmm-I to P4/nmm-II at approximately 82 GPa. Electronic band structures show that all the high-pressure phases are metallic. Among these new structures, P4/nmm-II ZrGeS and P4/mmm ZrGeSe can be quenched to ambient pressure with superconducting critical temperatures of approximately 8.1 K and 8.0 K, respectively. Our study provides a way to tune the structure, electronic properties, and superconducting behavior of topological materials through pressure.

Abstract:Tuning the structure of organic–inorganic perovskites by pressure holds great promise for discovering materials with favorable properties. However, most of their high-pressure structures cannot be preserved at ambient conditions and little is known about how to control the properties of these materials recovered from high pressure. Here, we have manipulated the bandgap in a high-pressure-treated 2D organic-inorganic halide perovskite. We find that the bandgap of this compound can be largely altered by pressure-induced lattice disorder. Below 25 GPa, the phase transition is reversible and the thus-produced lattice distortion cannot be preserved after pressure release. In contrast, for the sample treated above 25 GPa, the structural disorder can be preserved at ambient pressure. Consequently, the bandgap of the sample can be profoundly tuned from 2.98 to 3.46 eV. These findings offer an extraordinary example for manipulating the structure and electronic properties of organic–inorganic perovskites by high pressure treatment.
