Abstract:Tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide (TBzTD) is an environmentally friendly vulcanization accelerator, which has attracted much attention in recent years. In contrast to traditional synthesis technologies, which create stoichiometric sodium sulfate or sodium chloride waste salts, we carefully studied an electrosynthesis method of TBzTD based on flow reactors, which prevented the generation of salt. Two reactors with different electrode areas were used to implement the electrochemical oxidative coupling reaction of sodium dibenzyl dithiocarbamates, and effects of potential, current, electrode material, electrode distance, flow rate, concentration, and temperature on the yield and space time yield of TBzTD were carefully investigated. Almost 100% Faraday efficiency of the reaction was obtained at relatively optimized reaction condition and the highest yield of TBzTD reached 86%. Although the yield of TBzTD did not reach 100% in the electrosynthesis reaction, the circulation of aqueous phase demonstrated by a membrane separator assisted flow reaction system helped to accomplish fully conversion of initial amine and carbon disulfide and atomic economic synthesis of TBzTD.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Catalytic dehydrogenative coupling of thiols with amines to produce sulfenamides and disulfides is an important reaction in the industry. Classical synthesis of sulfenamides involves the reaction between amine nucleophiles and sulfonyl chlorides, which are not widely available, toxic and unstable, and the reaction requires a combination of oxidizing and chlorinating reagents. Here we decribe an environmentally benign protocol for the efficient electrochemical dehydrogenative coupling of thiols with amines or thiols to form compounds possessing S–N or S–S bonds. We used potassium iodide as electrocatalyst in methanol for a greener reaction. The reaction operates under ambient conditions in the absence of oxidants, acids/bases or toxic/explosive electrolytes. Results show that most produced sulfenamides and disulfides are generated in yields up to 99%.

Influence of Complex Multiphasic Flow on the Thiuram Electrosynthesis in a Microchannel Reactor

Abstract:As an important sustainable method for chemical synthesis, organic electrosynthesis experienced a renaissance in recent years for its excellent atom economy. Although microchannel reactors have been proposed to advanced electrosynthesis devices to obtain low energy cost and high reaction performance, the complex multiphasic flow in the electrochemical microchannels are very less reported and the effects of flow condition on the electrosynthesis reaction are less reported. Taking the electrosynthesis of tetraethyl thiuram disulfide (TETD) as a typical case, we developed a visualized electrochemical microchannel reactor equipped with fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) loaded glass electrode to investigate the gas‐liquid‐liquid triple phase flow pattern and the main factors influenced the response current at certain applied cell voltage. The gas‐liquid‐liquid hybrid flow with low gas hold‐up and high liquid flow rate was found crucial for preventing coverage of TETD on the electrode, which provided 23.1% low current attenuation ratio at 3.0 V cell voltage. The research not only exhibited the complex evolution mechanism of the response current, but also showed the importance of flow condition control for balancing the work efficiency and energy consumption of electrosynthesis process.

Abstract:A green synthesis method for the oxidation of sodium dialkyldithiocarbamate to the corresponding thiuram disulfides was developed in the presence of CO2 as the neutralizing agent, H2O2 as the oxidant, and water as the solvent. The method could provide much greener reaction conditions, convert CO2 to a relatively high-quality product without H2SO4 consumption, and obtain high yields and purity of products. The effects of CO2 flow rate, reaction temperature, concentration, dropping speed, and excess degree of hydrogen peroxide, as well as the concentration of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, were investigated. By HPLC-MS detection of the mother liquor, it was found that the organic byproducts of this oxidation process were the hydrolysis product of TMTD (tetramethyl thiuram disulfide), sodium dimethylcarbamothioate, and the peroxidation product of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate, sodium (dimethylamino)(thioxo)methanesulfonate, which have been rarely proven experimentally by previous work. These byproducts were generated in the latter stage of the oxidation process. Therefore, possible chemical reactions of this synthesis process were proposed. On the basis of these reactions, a 0.6 stoichiometric hydrogen peroxide dosage was added, the mother liquor was recycled, and no organic byproduct was found after five stages of recycling. As a result, the discharge of wastewater was greatly reduced. Tetraethyl thiuram disulfide was also synthesized by this method to demonstrate its universality.

Abstract:A transition-metal-free approach to synthesize unsymmetrical disulfides is reported that relies on a K2CO3-promoted one-pot reaction of thiosulfonates, thiourea and alkyl halides under mild conditions. The protocol tolerates a wide range of substrates, leading to various types of unsymmetrical disulfides in moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, the late-stage modification of natural products and drug molecules was also achieved.

Abstract:The wet-chemical technique has been widely applied in material synthesis. In recent years, high throughput (HT) technique has shown its potential in parallel synthesis and the investigation of synthesis parameters. However, traditional ways of HT parallel synthesis require costly equipment and complex operating procedures, restricting their further applications. In this paper, we prepared a cost-effective and timesaving microfluidic-based composition and temperature controlling platform to carry out HT wet-chemical synthesis in a facile and automated workflow. The platform uses a microfluidic chip to generate 20–level concentration gradients of the two reagents and uses 100–channel reactor arrays for wet-chemical synthesis with 5–level temperature gradients. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were applied to characterize Co–Ni bimetallic powder materials synthesized under 100 different reaction conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was conducted to confirm the oxidation state of the products. This platform not only enables one-step determination of the minimum reaction temperature required for a wet-chemical system but also provides a significant increase in efficiency compared with the traditional wet-chemical approach. The microfluidic-based composition and temperature controlling platform shows promise in facile, efficient, and low-cost HT wet-chemical synthesis of materials.

Abstract:An electrochemical protocol for the synthesis of sulfursulfoxonium ylides and 1,3-dithioketals by reacting sulfoxonium ylides with disulfides has been developed under simple and mild conditions. By changing the solubility of the raw materials and the dielectric parameters of the electrolyte, sulfurization enabled a selective dehydrogenation of C-S and the construction of 1,3-dithioketals. The transformation is an ideal approach to prepare organosulfur reagents with a broad functional group tolerance as well as high selectivity, which leads to vicinal difunctionalized organosulfur compounds.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods are environmentally friendly and have unique advantages in the synthesis of organic chemicals. However, their implementation is limited due to the complex transport problems posed by traditional electrochemical reactors. Recently, the application of microreaction technology in electrosynthesis studies has reduced the transport distance of ions and increased the specific surface area of electrodes, leading to efficient, successive, and easily scaled-up electrosynthesis technologies. In this review article, engineering advantages of using microchannels in electrosynthesis are discussed from process enhancement perspective. Flow patterns and mass transfer behaviors in recently reported electrochemical microreactors are analyzed, and prototypes for the reactor scale-up are reviewed. As a relatively new research area, many scientific rules and engineering features of electrosynthesis in microreactors require elucidation. Potential research foci, considered crucial for the development of novel electrosynthesis technology, are therefore proposed. (C) 2021 THE AUTHORS. Abstract:An electrochemical three-component reaction involving elemental sulfur is disclosed for achieving a metal-free, oxidant-free synthesis of thioesters in a high atom-economical, step-economical and chemoselective manner. A mechanistic investigation indicates that the use of elemental sulfur to trap acyl radical derived from radical umpolung of α-keto acid with an electrochemical design can efficiently generate a carbonyl thiyl radical, which can further be captured by diazoalkane to afford various thioesters.

Abstract:Supercooled liquid sulfur microdroplets were directly generated from polysulfide electrochemical oxidation on various metal-containing electrodes. The sulfur droplets remain liquid at 155 degrees C below sulfur's melting point (T-m = 115 degrees C), with fractional supercooling change (T-m - T-sc)/T-m larger than 0.40. In operando light microscopy captured the rapid merging and shape relaxation of sulfur droplets, indicating their liquid nature. Micropatterned electrode and electrochemical current allow precise control of the location and size of supercooled microdroplets, respectively. Using this platform, we initiated and observed the rapid solidification of supercooled sulfur microdroplets upon crystalline sulfur touching, which confirms supercooled sulfur's metastability at room temperature. In addition, the formation of liquid sulfur in electrochemical cell enriches lithium-sulfur-electrolyte phase diagram and potentially may create new opportunities for high-energy Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Increasing the sustainability of nanocrystals is crucial to their application and the protection of the environment. Sulfur precursors for their synthesis are commonly obtained through multiple steps from H2S, only to be converted back to H2S during the synthesis of the nanocrystals. This convoluted process requires energy, reduces yields, increases waste and auxiliaries, and complicates recycling. Using H2S directly could drastically improve sustainability, but is prevented by toxicity and handling. We here show that H2S is stabilized by reaction with oleylamine (the most common and versatile ligand in nanoparticle synthesis) to form an ionic liquid precursor that addresses all major principles of green chemistry: it is made in one exothermic step, it leaves the reaction yielding a safer product and allowing the separate recycling of the precursors, and it produces high quality nanocrystals with high yields (sulfur yield > 70%) and concentrations (90 g L−1) in ambient conditions.

Abstract:An integrated microreaction system of a microreactor with a Taylor-Couette reactor (TCR) for continuous synthesis of 2,2'-dibenzothiazole disulfide has been developed, so as to improve the process efficiency and the stability with solid product generation compared with the current batch process. The homogeneous oxidation with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by phosphotungstic acid was applied. In the microreaction system, two feedstocks can be rapidly mixed through the microreactor; stable particle flow ability and high conversion can be achieved through the TCR, due to the flow characteristics of high shear stress and limited back-mixing. Under the conditions of stable operation, the conversion can reach over 90%. The purity of the product is over 99%. The space-time yield can reach 160 g L-1 h(-1), which is much higher than that in the batch reactor. The microreaction system is stable for long-term running, which provides an effective design strategy for continuous flow processes with solid generation.

Abstract:Herein, a continuous synthetic method of tetraethyl thiuram disulfide (TETD) with CO 2 as a weak acid reagent in a gas-liquid microdispersion reaction system has been described. A microdispersion reaction system comprising two microreactors for CO 2 absorption and diethyldithiocarbamate acid subsequent oxidation reaction was developed. In the first step, the main products of absorption and oxidation reactions were identified. Next, the yield of TETD and selectivity of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate under different flow rates of raw materials, amount of CO 2 , aging effect, and pressure in the microreaction system were determined. The yield reached 89.03% based on 60% H 2 O 2 dosage and the selectivity was 92.86% in less than 3 min of residence time, which was more than 30 min in the batch process. The space time yield in the microreaction system was ~20 times of that achieved in the batch process. The study provides a new successful reference for replacing batch synthesis by a continuous process using a microreaction system.
