Abstract:A practical and eco-friendly method for the controllable aerobic oxygenation of sulfides by electrochemical catalysis was developed. The switchable preparation of sulfoxides and sulfones was effectively controlled by reaction time, in which both molecular oxygen and water can be used as the oxygen source under catalyst and external oxidant-free conditions. The electrochemical protocol features a broad substrate scope and excellent site selectivity and is successfully applied to the modification of some sulfide-containing pharmaceuticals and their derivatives.

Abstract:An electrochemical protocol for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been developed in which NaCl plays a dual role: (1) as an electrolyte for the electrochemical transformations and (2) as a redox mediator to avoid oxidation of sensitive functional groups.An electrochemical protocol for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been developed in which NaCl plays a dual role: (1) as an electrolyte for the electrochemical transformations and (2) as a redox mediator to avoid oxidation of sensitive functional groups. Instead of a traditional oxidant, this methodology utilised traceless electrons as an ideal oxidant using anodic oxidation to access sulfoxides in good to excellent yields at ambient temperature. This metal-free electrochemical protocol is simple, environmentally friendly, and compatible with various sensitive functional groups using mixed acetone/water as the green solvent. Moreover, the cost-effective graphite felt electrodes can be reused up to ten times without loss of electrochemical activity. The methodology could be easily conducted on a gram or even a decagram scale.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of alcohols to their correspondingaldehydesand ketones plays a fundamental role in many industries, but conventionalstrategies suffer from high costs, harsh reaction conditions, andlow energy efficiency. Here, we combine the p-xylyleneglycol oxidation with the hydrogen evolution reaction via an I-/I-3 (-) redox mediator inan electrochemical flow system where inexpensive graphite felt (GF)is utilized as electrodes. In comparison to traditional chemical oxidation,the electrochemical flow synthesis via the mediator I-/I-3 (-) could offer an outstanding p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde selectivity of 96.5% and aFaradaic efficiency of 84.8%. Besides, we realize the gram-scale synthesisof p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehyde at the current densityof 25 mA/cm(2) with low energy consumption because of theprepared catalytically efficient GF-Cu7S4 andGF-Pt electrodes. We explore different substrates and observe theflexible adaptability of our proposed flow synthesis strategy, demonstratingits potential for industrial applications. An electrochemical flow synthesis strategyis proposed hereinfor the gram-scale synthesis of p-hydroxymethyl benzaldehydewith low energy consumption.

Abstract:An electrochemical protocol for the synthesis of sulfursulfoxonium ylides and 1,3-dithioketals by reacting sulfoxonium ylides with disulfides has been developed under simple and mild conditions. By changing the solubility of the raw materials and the dielectric parameters of the electrolyte, sulfurization enabled a selective dehydrogenation of C-S and the construction of 1,3-dithioketals. The transformation is an ideal approach to prepare organosulfur reagents with a broad functional group tolerance as well as high selectivity, which leads to vicinal difunctionalized organosulfur compounds.

Abstract:The identification of chemoselective oxidation process en route to fine chemicals and specialty chemicals is a long‐standing pursuit in chemical synthesis. A vertically structured, cobalt single atom‐intercalated molybdenum disulfide catalyst (Co1‐in‐MoS2) is developed for the chemoselective transformation of sulfides to sulfone derivatives. The single‐atom encapsulation alters the electron structure of catalyst owing to confinement effect and strong metal–substrate interaction, thus enhancing adsorption of sulfides and chemoselective oxidation at the edge sites of MoS2 to achieve excellent yields of up to 99% for 34 examples. The synthetic scopes can be extended to sulfide‐bearing alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, boronic esters, and amines derivatives as a toolbox for the synthesis of high‐value, multifunctional sulfones and late‐stage functionalization of pharmaceuticals, e.g., Tamiflu. The synthetic utility of cobalt single atom‐intercalated MoS2, together with its reusability, scalability, and simplified purification process, renders it promising for industrial productions.

Abstract:Catalytic dehydrogenative coupling of thiols with amines to produce sulfenamides and disulfides is an important reaction in the industry. Classical synthesis of sulfenamides involves the reaction between amine nucleophiles and sulfonyl chlorides, which are not widely available, toxic and unstable, and the reaction requires a combination of oxidizing and chlorinating reagents. Here we decribe an environmentally benign protocol for the efficient electrochemical dehydrogenative coupling of thiols with amines or thiols to form compounds possessing S–N or S–S bonds. We used potassium iodide as electrocatalyst in methanol for a greener reaction. The reaction operates under ambient conditions in the absence of oxidants, acids/bases or toxic/explosive electrolytes. Results show that most produced sulfenamides and disulfides are generated in yields up to 99%.

Abstract:Organic sulfur compounds have broad applications in biology, medicine and material sciences and intensive efforts have been devoted to developing mild and general C–S bond-forming methods. However, a mild, transition-metal-free, direct C–H bond functionalization method remains elusive. Here, we report the use of an internal oxidant-directing strategy to achieve this goal. The cascade reactions described here show excellent chemoselectivity and a wide substrate scope for both oxyamines and sulfenylation reagents. This study enlarges the synthesis toolbox for preparing structurally diverse sulfilimines under mild conditions.

Abstract:An efficient and selective method for oxidation of glycosyl sulfides to the corresponding glycosyl sulfoxides with metalloporphyrins as catalysts and sodium hypochlorite as oxidant was achieved under mild conditions. High chemoselectivity and diastereomeric excesses were obtained. Both acid-labile protected groups and carbon-carbon double bonds of allyl groups tolerated under these conditions.

Abstract:Aqueous electrochemical coupling reactions, which enable the green synthesis of complex organic compounds, will be a crucial tool in synthetic chemistry. However, a lack of informed approaches for screening suitable catalysts is a major obstacle to its development. Here, we propose a pioneering electrochemical reductive coupling reaction toward direct electrosynthesis of oxime from NOx and aldehyde. Through integrating experimental and theoretical methods, we screen out the optimal catalyst, i.e., metal Fe catalyst, that facilitates the enrichment and C-N coupling of key reaction intermediates, all leading to high yields (e.g., ∼99% yield of benzaldoxime) for the direct electrosynthesis of oxime over Fe. With a divided flow reactor, we achieve a high benzaldoxime production of 22.8 g h-1 gcat-1 in ∼94% isolated yield. This work not only paves the way to the industrial mass production of oxime via electrosynthesis but also offers references for the catalyst selection of other electrochemical coupling reactions.

Abstract:Copper sulfide based electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion are selective for production of formate as major product. Transformations under electrochemical conditions result in significant sulfur loss, and this study examines the nature of how persistent, residual sulfur (observed as surface SO42– species and S dissolved in the electrolyte) can sustain this unique selectivity which differs from that of pure copper. The conversion of CO2 into formate (HCOO−), a techno‐economically feasible product, can be achieved using earth‐abundant CuxS electrocatalysts, but questions remain regarding how catalyst structure, composition, and reaction environment influence product selectivity. A novel synthesis method based on electrodeposition of Cu foam and its subsequent sulfidation via immersion in sulfur saturated toluene solution resulted in CuxS foams. Catalytic activity studies found that HCOO− selectivity is dependent on electrochemical activation at higher overpotentials. To understand the effects of activation, determine the active forms of the catalysts, and identify the role of sulfur, the electrodes are carefully characterized as well as gaseous and sulfur dissolved in electrolyte. This included study of the effects of intentional addition of solution sulfur species, identification of the sulfur loss, determination of the electrode composition and relating sulfur speciation to observed product selectivity. It is found that residual sulfur stabilizes Cu+ during electrolysis at potentials favoring HCOO− production, in contrast to pristine Cu that undergoes complete reduction and shows poor HCOO− selectivity. Sulfur in both the catalyst and dissolved in electrolyte are of dynamic nature, and surface residues of SO42− species are identified in all activated catalysts which correspond with enhanced HCOO− production.

Abstract:A novel, clean and efficient protocol for the preparation of disulfides has been developed through the photochemical radical homo- and cross-coupling reaction of sulfenyl chlorides under LED irradiation and without the use of any catalyst and additive. The representative photochemical homo-coupling of trichloromethyl sulfenyl chloride has been successfully conducted on kilogram-scale in a continuous flow mode. The solvent and the main byproduct can be recovered in high yields, which makes the approach be highly atom economical. Various disulfides were prepared by the homo- and cross-coupling of sulfenyl chlorides under LED irradiation without the use of any catalyst or additive. The representative reaction was performed on kilogram-scale in a continuous flow mode.
