Efficient and Broadband Emission in Dy3+-Doped Glass-Ceramic Fibers for Tunable Yellow Fiber Laser

Abstract:Yellow lasers are of great interest in biology, medicine and display technology. However, nonlinear emission of near-infrared lasers at yellow still presents particularly complex optical alignment to date. Here, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate the fabrication of a NaLa(WO4)2: Dy3+ glass-ceramic fiber (GCF) for the first time. More importantly, the emission band of the GCF, which is around 575 nm, has a wide full-width half maximum (FWHM) of 18~22 nm, which is remarkably larger than that of the Dy3+-doped YAG crystal (<7 nm). The precursor fiber (PF) was drawn using the molten core drawing (MCD) method. In particular, benefiting from the in situ nanocrystals fabricated in the amorphous fiber core after thermal treatment, the resultant glass-ceramic fiber exhibits a five-times enhancement of luminescence intensity around 575 nm, compared with the precursor fiber, while retaining its broadband emission. Overall, this work is anticipated to offer a high potential GCF with prominent bandwidth for the direct access of a tunable yellow laser.

Abstract:Optical emission from rare-earth-doped fluoride fibers has thus far been limited to less than 4 {\mu}m. We extend emission beyond this limit by employing an indium fluoride (InF3) glass fiber as the host, which exhibits an increased infrared transparency over commonly used zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN). Near-infrared pumping of a dysprosium-doped InF3 fiber results in broad emission centered around 4.3 {\mu}m, representing the longest emission yet achieved from a fluoride fiber. The first laser emission in an InF3 fiber is also demonstrated from the 3 {\mu}m dysprosium transition. Finally, a frequency domain excited state lifetime measurement comparison between fluoride hosts suggests that multiphonon effects are significantly reduced in indium fluoride fiber, paving the way to more efficient, longer wavelength lasers compared to ZBLAN fibers

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.
Efficient 2075-nm laser emission from Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite glass in a compact all-fiber structure

Abstract:In this Letter, we report an Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite glass all-fiber laser at 2075 nm. The gain fiber is pumped in-band with a 1976-nm fiber laser and connected by fusion splicing. A high-quality fusion splicing point with a loss of < 0.1 dB was obtained by finely adjusting the splicing power and offset. In addition, by optimizing the writing parameters, a third-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a reflectivity of 98% was achieved at 2075 nm using the femtosecond laser direct-writing method. Using the FBG as the laser cavity mirror and a relatively short 28-cm-long home-made Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite fiber as the laser medium, a laser with a maximum unsaturated output power of 7.33 W was obtained, and the corresponding slope efficiency was as high as 93.4%. The first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of the fluorotellurite glass all-fiber ∼2.1-µm laser presented in this work may pave the way for a high-power 2.1-µm fiber laser with a compact structure.

Abstract:Absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra in Er3+-doped phosphate glasses have been measured. Some emission parameters, such as emission cross section, spontaneous emission probability, and fluorescence linewidth of the Er3+-doped phosphate glass, have been calculated. Upconversion of 1.064 μm Nd:YAG laser pulses into intense green 547 nm and red 667 nm light in a Er3+-doped phosphate glass fiber has been achieved. Fluorescence efficiencies of the two signals, green 547 nm and red 667 nm fluorescences, are 1.78 × 10−2% and 4.2 × 10−3%, respectively. The two signals are refered to 4S32→4I152 and 4F92→4I152 radiative transitions by two-photon absorption fluorescence.

Abstract:Yb3+-doped transparent glass ceramics containing cubic SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by heat treating the precursor fluorosilicate glass. The precipitated crystals increase in size and the crystallinity decreases with increasing Yb3+ doping level. With high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, the nano-sized nature of SrF2 was clearly observed. Owing to a significant change in the crystal-field effects with Yb3+ enriching in the SrF2 phase, the glass ceramics present near infrared emission with large bandwidths and long lifetimes, simultaneously. This indicates the glass ceramics have potential application in the efficient IR lasers pumping by InGaAs diodes. The glass ceramics can also emit blue upconversion luminescence, deriving from Yb3+ pairs' cooperative luminescence. It suggested that Yb3+ can be an efficient upconversion sensitizer for other rare earth ions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report in this work a continuous wave (CW) narrowband 589 nm light generation for the purpose of laser guide assisted adaptive optics. A 39 mm long 1 mm thick periodically poled near stoichiometric LiTaO 3 crystal with duty cycle near 50% was fabricated using electrical poling at room temperature and pumped by a Raman fiber amplifier. We tested two temperature control ovens, and a maximum conversion efficiency of about 14.3%, corresponding to 4 W of yellow light with 28 W of fundamental power, and bandwidth less than 0.18 GHz was achieved.

Abstract:Transition spectra in the 4F3/2-4I13/2 transition band of Nd:YVO4 crystal are too weak to form laser oscillation for the small stimulated emission cross section and strong parasitical oscillation, except for the 1342 nm wavelength. By adjusting the loss of the resonant cavity, 1386 nm continuous wave output from fiber coupled laser diode end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is achieved, which reaches 305 mW with pump power of 4.24 W, and the slope efficiency is 13.9% with the highest output power. Continuous wave outputs of 1342 nm and 1386 nm are also observed in the experiment. The stimulated emission cross section of Nd:YVO4 crystal at the wavelength of 1386 nm is calculated as about (3 ± 1) × 10-19 cm2, according to the pumping threshold energy and experimental data.

Abstract:In this paper the spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of several Nd3+-doped fluoride glass have been studied by the experiment and calculation using the Judd-Ofelt theoretical model. It is shown that the fluorescence properties of Nd3+ ions in the fluorozirconate glass are better than those in fluoroaluminate glass and fluorophosphate glass, and are further improved by the substitution of NaCl for NaF in ZBLAN glass. The Nd3+-doped fluoride glass fiber with a core diameter of 9 ��m was prepared and some laser properties of fiber were measured using a simple Fabry-Perot cavity with pumping of a 514 nm Ar laser or 800 nm Ti: sapphire laser. A CW laser at 1.05 and 1.34 ��m was observed. For the 1.05 ��m laser, the output power of 11 mW and a slope efficiency of 20% at room temperature were obtained.

Abstract:Lasers at similar to 900 nm have been of vital importance in various fields, including material processing, underwater communications, and strong-field physics. Although Nd3+-doped materials have been employed for the similar to 900 nm laser, the similar to 900 nm emission is in strong competition with the often more dominating similar to 1060 nm emission, which strongly limits the output power and applications. This paper proposes a direct coordination engineering approach, which introduces halogen to the nearest coordination of Nd3+ in glass for increasing the bond covalency, leading to stronger emissions at similar to 900 nm than at similar to 1060 nm. Iodide-incorporated Nd3+-doped silica fibers show prevailing similar to 900 nm emission rarely observed in Nd3+-doped materials. Using the created fibers, a power (113.5W) 50 times higher than the current record is accomplished based on an all-fiber structure. Our approach holds the potential for regulating the spectroscopic properties of other rare-earth-doped laser materials. Abstract:A long-period fiber grating (LPFG) was fabricated in a home-made fluoroindate fiber using a femtosecond laser, and attenuation peaks as strong as −17 dB, with sharp and predictable spectral resonances, were obtained over the transmission spectrum. A strain up to 2000 με applied on the LPFG yielded a resonant wavelength redshift of circa 8.46 nm. The strain sensitivity of this LPFG in fluoroindate fibers could pave the way for a new range of applications in the mid-infrared wavelength regions, such as tunable optical rejection band filters in fiber amplifiers and sensing devices.

Abstract:Intense infrared emission of Yb3+ is reported for the Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped fluorosilicate glass ceramics. With annealing methods, cubic SrF2: Eu3+, Yb3+ nanocrystals are precipitated homogeneously in the glass ceramics. The incorporation of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the SrF2 nanocrystal was confirmed by XRD patterns and emission spectra. Deriving from much closer distance between Eu3+ and Yb3+ ions in the nanocrystals, higher efficient energy transfer of Eu3+→Yb3+ (cross relaxation between Eu3+:5D0→7F6 andYb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition or cooperative energy transfer from one Eu3+ ion to a couple of Yb3+ ions) and intense near infrared emission of Yb3+:2F5/2→2F7/2 transition are achieved in the glass ceramics. Both the quantum yield (QY) and the NIR emission intensity of the glass ceramics are enhanced, when compared with the precursor glasses. The maximum ET efficiency of Eu3+→Yb3+ is close to 60%, and the measured maximum QY of 980 nm emissions is 13%. It demonstrates the potential application of Eu3+/Yb3+ co‐doped glass ceramics in improving the efficiency of silicon solar cells.

Abstract:Ho3+/Nd3+ co-doped fluoroindate glass samples were prepared by melt-quenching. The absorption and emission spectra, and the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve were measured and used to evaluate the spectroscopic parameters and thermal properties. An intense ~3.9 μm emission, ascribed to the transition Ho3+:5I5 →5I6, was observed under the excitation of an 808 nm laser diode and was ascribed to the efficient energy transfer process from Nd3+: 4F3/2 to Ho3+: 5I5, showing the Nd3+ role as a sensitizer. The optimal concentration ratio of Ho3+ and Nd3+ for ~3.9 μm emission was estimated to be 1:1. The spectroscopic performance suggests that the Ho3+/Nd3+ co-doped fluoroindate glass is a potential gain material for ~3.9 μm laser applications.

Abstract:All-fiber ns-pulsed visible laser at λ=521 nm is realized by frequency doubling an Yb-doped fiber laser with a periodically poled silica fiber. A 50-mW second-harmonic (SH) output power is produced that is over 6-orders of magnitude greater than previous results obtained with poled fibers in the visible spectral range. The normalized conversion efficiency of 0.3%/W is to date the largest demonstrated with poled fiber technology. Furthermore, 21% conversion efficiency is achieved for the doubling of 8-ps pulses from a neodymium-doped yttrium vanadate solid-state laser. The advances are made possible by the precision and flexibility offered by using the continuous periodic UV erasure, as opposite to photolithographic methods, for the fabrication of over 20-cm-long χ(2)-gratings for quasi-phase matched SH generation.
Double-pass forward superfluorescence of Nd3+ doped fluoride glass fiber pumped by 800 nm laser

Abstract:The basic characteristics of double pass forward superfluorescence of Nd3+ doped fluoride glass fiber, such as input-output, output-linewidth and output-wavelength (exciting) of the superfluorescence had been studied. In experiment, the maximum output is 8mW and the linewidth is 7.5nm in the double pass forward case. The fitting formulas were given. The experiments suggest that the superfluorescence of fluoride glass fiber is a kind of low-coherence and high performances light source with bright application prospect.

Abstract:Yb 3+ -doped borosilicate-based glass and glass ceramics containing CaF 2 nanocrystals prepared by conventional melt quench method followed by reheat treatment were characterized for NIR fiber lasers. The crystalline phase, morphology, and the presence of various functional groups were examined through powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopic, and Fourier transform infrared studies. The fiber drawing nature and the thermal stability were studied through differential scanning calorimetry. The X-ray diffraction and morphology investigations confirm the ceramic behavior of the studied samples with notable transparency. The optical band gap energy was estimated using the absorption spectra. The emission cross-section corresponding to Yb 3+ : 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 (981 nm) transition was determined from the Fuchtbauer–Ladenburg method, Mc Cumber theory, and the emission spectra. Considerably high-emission cross-section and gain coefficient values of glass ceramic obtained by heat treatment at 450 °C/1 h show its suitability to design 981-nm infrared fiber laser sources.

Abstract:The 4f135d–4f14 energy transition of Yb2+ ions can cover the whole white light wavelength, Yb2+-doped materials have thus been a hot research field. In order to obtain a white light source, many kinds of Yb2+-doped materials have been prepared. In this study, divalent Yb2+-doped silica fiber was fabricated using rod-in-tube technology. The fiber core of Yb2+-doped silica glass was prepared with high-temperature melting technology under vacuum conditions. The spectroscopic properties of the Yb2+-doped glass and fiber were studied. The experiments indicate that divalent Yb2+-doped glass has a high quantum efficiency and super-broadband fluorescence in the visible region with an excitation wavelength of 405 nm. In addition, the results suggest that Yb2+-doped fiber has a potential for application in visible fiber lasers and fiber amplification.

Abstract:Broadband phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes are replacing the conventional light sources in spectroscopy application owning to the high efficiency, long lifetime, and compactness. However, the broadband emission originated from multi-component phosphors exhibits low quantum efficiency (QE) and poor thermal stability. Herein, a single Mn2+ ions activated fluosilicate (SF) glass, with broadband emission from 475 nm to 800 nm and good thermal conductivity (2.3 W/m·K), was presented. Their optical properties, structural characteristics and thermal performances were investigated through UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrometer, Raman system, as well as thermal analyzer. The results show that continuously tunable broadband emission from green to orange, enhanced QE from 27.9% to 43.8%, and improved thermal stability (increasing Tg from 546°C to 665°C and decreasing thermal quenching) were achieved by increasing the Y2O3 content of SF glass composition. All of those investigations provide a new approach for exploring a continuously tunable broadband emission based on single-component phosphor with one activator.
