Abstract:In this work, semi-rigid linkers of the alkyl-thiophene-alkyl structure are developed to construct double-cable polymers. Three alkyl units, propyl (C3H6), hexyl (C6H12), and dodecyl (C12H24), are applied as semi-rigid linkers, yielding three double-cable polymers: PBC6-T, PBC12-T, and PBC24-T, respectively. PBC12-T which uses C6H12-thiophene-C6H12 linkers is found to exhibit the best device efficiency of 5.56%, while PBC6-T and PBC24-T with shorter or longer linkers yield device efficiencies of only 2.65% and 1.09% in single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs). Further studies reveal that PBC12-T exhibits higher crystallinity and improved charge transport, resulting in better efficiencies. Our work provides an approach to construct double-cable conjugated polymers with long alkyl linkers, and it shows the importance of the linker length for the photovoltaic performance of SCOSCs.

Abstract:2D conjugated charge‐transfer polymers hold the fundamental importance of both atomically defined molecular structures and unique spatial confinement for distinctive and exotic material properties. However, such 2D crystalline networks exhibit a fundamental processing challenge in polymer science and molecular assembly, which precludes emerging applications for 2D polymers. Here, an operationally simple solvothermal crystallization of conjugated charge‐transfer polymer into a freestanding and ultrathin 2D nanosheet directed by electrostatic recognition, π–π interaction, and charge‐transfer complexation is reported. High flexibility and 3D stacking capability of ultrathin 2D conjugated polymers provide a robust solution‐processing platform to uncover their emerging optoelectronics and multisensing capabilities. Resembling covalent organic framework assembly, these materials potentially open up a new exciting field of 2D conjugated networks with the structure flexibility and materials‐by‐design opportunities for all organic electronics.

Abstract:Semiconducting polymers, in contrast to inorganic silicon, are solution processable and can potentially be printed cost efficiently on flexible large‐area substrates. However to do so it is of paramount importance to formulate the polymeric semiconductors into inks with specific viscosities. Herein, the synthesis of a new highly soluble isoindigo monomer and its incorporation into low bandgap semiconducting polymers is presented. Non‐conjugated flexible linkers are introduced into the conjugated backbone in order to modulate the materials processability. The viscoelastic properties of the new polymers are studied in detail by means of rheometry and dynamical mechanical analysis. The solution viscosity is directly proportional to the content of non‐conjugated linkers in the polymer backbone. In organic field‐effect transistors maximum hole mobilities of 1.7 cm2 V−1 s−1 are achieved with the new polymers. Due to the enhanced solubility all‐polymer solar cells are fabricated by solution shearing, reaching power conversion efficiency values of 3.7%.

Abstract:Polymer semiconductors have shown distinct promise for the development of human-integrated electronics, owing to their solution processability and mechanical softness. However, numerous functional properties required for this application domain face synthetic challenges to being conveyed onto conjugated polymers and thus combined with efficient charge-transport properties. Here, we develop a "click-to-polymer" (CLIP) synthesis strategy for conjugated polymers, which uses a click reaction for the facile and versatile attachment of diverse types of functional units to a pre-synthesized conjugated-polymer precursor. With four types of functional groups, we show that functionalized polymers from this CLIP method can still retain good charge-carrier mobility. We take two realized polymers to showcase a photopatternable property and a biochemical sensing function, both of which advance the state of the art of realizing these two types of functions on conjugated polymers. We expect that the expanded use of this synthesis approach can largely enrich the functional properties of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:The alkyl chains as linkers in double-cable conjugated polymers play an important role in the solubility, packing motif, morphology, and voltage loss in single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs). In this work, we incorporate alkyl linkers with lengths from hexyl (C6H12) to hexadecyl (C16H32) into naphthalene diimide-based double-cable conjugated polymers. These polymers show a parabolic-type distribution in crystallinity, in which the crystalline degree of the polymers is enhanced in sequence from P06 (C6H12 linker) to P12 (C12H24 linker) and then decreased in longer alkyl linkers. These differences bring into deviations like optical bandgaps, packing motif, charge transport, and photovoltaic performance in SCOSCs. This work demonstrates the importance of linkers’ length on crystallinity and packing motif as well as provides a new viewpoint in guiding the design of new double-cable conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Nonradiative recombination loss is the key factor to be responsible for low open-circuit voltage (Voc) in organic solar cells (OSCs), which can be reduced via tuning the chemical structure of conjugated materials. However, the intrinsic correlation between them was rarely studied. In this work, we were able to build a strong connection between chemical structure and nonradiative recombination loss, which was then used to lower the voltage losses in OSCs. The studies start from designing several double-cable conjugated polymers with rigid phenyl linkers, which guarantee the precise distance between donor (D) backbone and acceptor (A) side units. In addition, the number of phenyl linkers was changed from one to three, so as to provide different D/A distances. The universal studies of solar cells, morphology, and voltage losses showed that longer D/A distance provided lower nonradiative recombination losses and hence higher Voc in single-component OSCs. Abstract:In this work, a non-fused electron acceptor with near-infrared absorption was introduced into double-cable conjugated polymers for single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs). The non-fused electron acceptor contains a simple thienyl-phenyl-thienyl core with 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile (IC) as the end group, which was used as the side unit to create double-cable conjugated polymers. In addition, poly(benzodithiophene) was selected as the conjugated backbone, in which the number of chlorine (Cl) atoms was varied to tune the optical and electronic properties. The new double-cable polymers were successfully applied in SCOSCs, providing an efficiency of over 8% with a broad photoresponse from 300 to 800 nm. When the number of Cl atoms on the repeat unit was increased from 2 to 3, the open-circuit voltage was enhanced to 1.01 V, yielding a low voltage loss of 0.59 eV, while the efficiency was reduced to 5.28%. The reduced performance is explained by the increased charge recombination in this polymer, as observed by transient absorption spectroscopy. This work reports a set of IC-based NIR double-cable conjugated polymers, which inspire material design toward more efficient SCOSCs.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.

Abstract:ConspectusConjugated polymers for application in organic solar cells (OSCs) have been developed from poly(phenylenevinylene) to poly(3-hexylthiophene) and then to "donor-acceptor" structures, providing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 18% when blending with the electron acceptor as a two-component photoactive layer. Besides, graft-structural double-cable conjugated polymers that use an electron donor as conjugated backbones and an electron acceptor as pendant side units are one kind of conjugated polymer, in which charge carriers are generated in a single polymer. Therefore, double-cable conjugated polymers can be used as a single photoactive layer in single-component OSCs (SCOSCs). The covalently linked electron donor and acceptor enable double-cable polymers to maintain stable microstructures during long-term operation compared to two-component systems, which is very important for OSCs toward large-area applications. However, SCOSCs based on double-cable conjugated polymers provided PCEs below 3% in a long period, which is lagging far behind PCEs of two-component OSCs. The key reason for this is the limited number of chemical structures and the difficulty to tune the morphology in these polymers.In this Account, we provide an overview about our efforts on developing new double-cable conjugated polymers with rylene diimides as side units, and how to realize high PCEs in SCOSC devices. The studies start from developing a "functionalization-polymerization" method to synthesize the polymers containing rylene diimide acceptors, so that large amounts of double-cable conjugated polymers with distinct physical and electrochemical properties were obtained. Then, we will discuss how to control the nanophase separation in the crystalline region and optimize the miscibility in the amorphous region of double-cable polymers, simultaneously facilitating exciton dissociation and charge transport. With these efforts, a high PCE of 8.4% has been obtained, representing the record PCE in SCOSCs. In addition, the physical process and the stability of SCOSCs will be discussed. We hope that this account will inspire many innovative studies in this field and push the PCEs of SCOSCs to a new stage.

Abstract:Multifunctional semiconductors integrating unique optical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics are critical to advanced and emerging manufacturing technologies. However, due to the trade‐off challenges in the design principles, fabrication difficulty, defects in existing materials, etc., realizing multiple functions through multistage manufacturing is quite taxing. Here, an effective molecular design strategy was established to prepare a class of multifunctional integrated polymer semiconductors. The pyridal[1,2,3]triazole‐thiophene co‐structured tetrapolymers with full‐backbone coplanarity and considerable inter/intramolecular noncovalent interactions facilitate short‐range order and excellent (re)organization capability of polymer chains, providing stress‐dissipation sites in the film state. The regioregular multicomponent conjugated backbones contribute to dense packing, excellent crystallinity, high crack onset strain over 100%, efficient carrier transport with mobilities of more than 1 cm2 V−1 s−1, and controllable near‐infrared luminescence. Furthermore, a homologous blending strategy was proposed to further enhance the color‐tunable luminescent properties of polymers while effectively retaining mechanical and electrical properties. The blended system exhibits excellent field‐effect mobility (μ) and quantum yield (Φ), reaching a record Φ · μ of 0.43 cm2 V−1 s−1. Overall, the proposed strategy facilitates a rational design of regioregular semicrystalline intrinsically stretchable polymers with high mobility and color‐tunable intense luminescence, providing unique possibilities for the development of multifunctional integrated semiconductors in organic optoelectronics. Rigidifying the Π-Linker to Enhance Light Absorption of Organic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells and Influences on Charge Transfer Dynamics

Abstract:The usage of coplanar it-conjugated segments represents a feasible strategy on reducing the energy gap of organic push pull dyes for mesoscopic titania solar cells. In this paper, we report two new dyes coded as C254 and C255 with the respective 1,4-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzene and indacenodithiophene pi-linkers, in combination with the electron-releasing triphenylamine and electron-withdrawing cyanoacrylic acid units. The energy-gap reduction stemming from the rigidity of the g-linker is accompanied by a negative shift of the ground-state redox potential, which however does not affect the yield of hole injection from the oxidized state of dye molecules to a cobalt redox electrolyte. On the other side, we have identified from femtosecond transient absorption measurements a diminished rate of electron injection from the relaxed, low-energy excited state of C255 to titania, albeit a comparable rate of electron injection from the high-energy excited states of these two dyes. The bulkier C255 dye with four hexyl side chains tethered on the two sp(3) carbons of the fused indacenodithiophene unit can form a more compact self-assembling monolayer on titania, considerably attenuating the charge recombination of photoinjected electrons in titania with the cobalt electrolyte and thus enhancing the cell photovoltage and efficiency.
Tailoring polymer acceptors by electron linkers for achieving efficient and stable all-polymer solar cells

Abstract:Abstract The trade-off between efficiency and stability is a bit vague, and it can be tricky to precisely control the bulk morphology to simultaneously improve device efficiency and stability. Herein, three fused-ring conducted polymer acceptors containing furan, thiophene and selenophene as the electron linkers in their conjugated backbones, namely PY-O, PY-S and PY-Se, were designed and synthesized. The electron linker engineering affects the intermolecular interactions of relative polymer acceptors and their charge transport properties. Furthermore, excellent material compatibility was achieved when PY-Se was blended with polymer donor PBDB-T, resulting in nanoscale domains with favorable phase separation. The optimized PBDB-T : PY-Se blend not only exhibits maximum performance with a power conversion efficiency of 15.48%, which is much higher than those of PBDB-T : PY-O (9.80%) and PBDB-T : PY-S (14.16%) devices, but also shows better storage and operational stabilities, and mechanical robustness. This work demonstrates that precise modification of electron linkers can be a practical way to simultaneously actualize molecular crystallinity and phase miscibility for improving the performance of all-polymer solar cells, showing practical significance.

Abstract:Double-cable conjugated polymers contain electron-donating (D) backbones and electron-accepting (A) side units, in which the nanophase separation of the donor and acceptor segments is a crucial factor to determine the photovoltaic performance of single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs). In this work, three random double-cable conjugated polymers (denoted as P1-P3 with enhanced acceptor contents) were designed to tailor nanophase separation of D/A to realize high-performance SCOSCs. These new random double-cable conjugated polymers contain identical polymer backbone with varied contents of near-infrared acceptor side units. It is observed that, the acceptor contents could effectively tune the aggregated degree of backbone and acceptor (shown in the absorption spectra and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurement) and further influence the construction of charge-transporting pathways. Therefore, a moderate content of acceptor side units provides balanced D/A aggregation and optimal nanophase separation, resulting in a high efficiency of 9.4% in SCOSCs. These results demonstrate that random double-cable conjugated polymers are an excellent model for studying the impact of their aggregation/crystallinity so as to realize high-performance SCOSCs.

Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Incorporating flexible insulating polymers is a straightforward strategy to enhance the mechanical properties of rigid conjugated polymers, enabling their use in flexible electronic devices. However, maintaining electronic characteristics simultaneously is challenging due to the poor miscibility between insulating polymers and conjugated polymers. This study introduces the carboxylation of insulating polymers as an effective strategy to enhance miscibility with conjugated polymers via surface energy modulation and hydrogen bonding. The carboxylated elastomer, synthesized via a thiol-ene click reaction, closely matches the surface energy of the conjugated polymer. This significantly improves the mechanical properties, achieving a high crack-onset strain of 21.48%, surpassing that (5.93%) of the unmodified elastomer:conjugated polymer blend. Upon incorporating the carboxylated elastomer into PM6:L8-BO-based organic solar cells, an impressive power conversion efficiency of 19.04% is attained, which top-performs among insulating polymer-incorporated devices and outperforms devices with unmodified elastomer or neat PM6:L8-BO. The superior efficiency is attributed to the optimized microstructures and enhanced crystallinity for efficient and balanced charge transport, and suppressed charge recombination. Furthermore, flexible devices with 5% carboxylated elastomer exhibit superior mechanical stability, retaining approximate to 88.9% of the initial efficiency after 40 000 bending cycles at a 1 mm radius, surpassing approximate to 83.5% for devices with 5% unmodified elastomer. An effective strategy to enhance the miscibility between the conjugated polymer PM6 and the insulating elastomer styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) has been developed by incorporating carboxyl groups into SBS (SBS-COOH), resulting in optimized mechanical properties and morphology of PM6. A remarkable power conversion efficiency of 19.04% is achieved for organic solar cells with 5% SBS-COOH (PM6:L8-BO system), outperforming devices of PM6:L8-BO without or with SBS. image

Abstract:Away from traditional "end-to-end" linking, we have constructed a polymer acceptor for organic solar cells using "core-to-core" polymerization in order to free the halogenated end groups for better molecular packing. This strategy results in a unique "double-decker" structure that features intramolecular packing, which helps ensure a rigid polymer conformation. Ternary devices incorporating this acceptor have achieved an outstanding efficiency of 18.7%, thanks to enhanced absorption, morphology, exciton dynamics, and reduced energy loss.

Abstract:The blending of π-conjugated molecules with polymeric semiconductors into a composite system is an effective strategy to promote charge carrier mobility because of the transmission path by the conductive polymers through electrical bridge connection of the small organic molecule crystalline domain. In this work, pentacene single crystal was prepared to induce the conjugated polymer chain alignment of polymeric semiconductor PDPP2T-TT-OD to form the semiconducting composite, which led to enhanced field-effect mobility of the organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) by improving the crystallinity due to nucleation and growth phase separation. Besides, with the addition of anti-solvents, the crystallization of the blend film was further improved, 27 times higher than that of a pure polymer semiconductor–based OTFT. That was because the pentacene nuclei induced polymer crystallization through π-π interactions and the addition of anti-solvent promoted the aggregation of polymer chains in solution, enabling the molecular chains packed more closely in solid films. Therefore, the chain arrangement of polymers induced via small molecular single crystals provides a new idea to improve mobility in composite semiconductor thin films for the construction of novel organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Fully π-conjugated polymers with rigid aromatic units are promising for flexible optoelectronic devices, but their inherent brittleness poses a challenge for achieving high-performance, intrinsically stretchable fully π-conjugated polymer. Here, we are establishing an external-plasticizing strategy using semiconductor fluid plasticizers (Z1 and Z2) to enhance the optoelectronic, morphological, and stretchable properties of fully π-conjugated polymer films for flexible light-emitting diodes. The synergistic effect of hierarchical structure and optoelectronic properties of Z1 in poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) films enable excellent stretchable deformability (~25%) and good conductivity. PLEDs based on F8BT/Z1 films show stable electroluminescence and efficiency under 15% stretch and 100 cycles at 10% strain, revealing outstanding stress tolerance. This strategy is also improving the stretchable properties of polymers like poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFO) and poly(2-methoxy-5(2′-ethyl)hexoxy-phenylenevinylene) (Super Yellow), demonstrating its general applicability. Therefore, this strategy can provide effective guidance for designing high-performance stretchable fully π-conjugated polymers films for flexible electronic devices.
