Abstract:ConspectusIn recent decades, there has been rapid development in the field of polymer semiconductors, particularly those based on conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers exhibiting high charge mobilities. Furthermore, the application of polymer semiconductors has been successfully extended to a wide range of functional devices, including sensors, photodetectors, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, electronic paper, skin electronics, and artificial synapses. Over the past few years, there has been a growing focus on stimuli-responsive polymer semiconductors, which have the potential to impart additional functionalities to conventional field-effect transistors, garnering increased attention within the research community. In this context, phototunable polymer semiconductors have received significant attention due to their ability to utilize light as an external stimulus, enabling remote control of device performance with high spatiotemporal resolution. Meanwhile, integration of field-effect transistors with polymer semiconductors can enable the realization of complex functions. To achieve this, precise and controllable patterning of polymer semiconductors becomes essential. In this Account, we discuss our research findings in the context of phototunable and photopatternable polymer semiconductors. These developments encompass the following key aspects: (i) polymer semiconductors, such as poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-quaterthiophene) (PDPP4T), exhibit phototunability when blended with the photochromic compound hexaarylbiimidazole (HABI). The photo/thermal-responsive field-effect transistors (FETs) can be fabricated using blending thin films. Remarkably, these photo/thermal-responsive transistors can function as photonically programmable and thermally erasable nonvolatile memory devices. (ii) By incorporating photoswitchable groups like azo and spiropyran into the side chains of conjugated D-A polymers, we can create phototunable polymer semiconductors. The reversible isomerization of azo and spiropyran groups significantly influences the charge transport properties of these polymer semiconductors. Consequently, the performance of the resulting FETs can be reversibly tuned through UV/visible or near-infrared light (NIR) irradiation. Notably, the incorporation of two distinct azo groups into the side chains leads to polymer semiconductors with tristable semiconducting states, offering the ability to logically control device performance using light irradiation at three different wavelengths. (iii) Photopatterning of p-type, n-type, and ambipolar semiconductors featuring alkyl side chains can be achieved using a diazirine-based, four-armed photo-cross-linker (4CNN) with a loading concentration of no more than 3% (w/w). Furthermore, the semiconducting performances of FETs with patterned thin films were found to be satisfactorily uniform. Importantly, the cross-linked thin films are robust and show good resistance to organic solvents, which is useful for fabricating all-solution processable multilayer electronic devices. (iv) The introduction of azide groups into the side chains of conjugated polymers results in a single-component semiconducting photoresist. The presence of azide groups renders the side chains with photo-cross-linking ability, enabling the successful formation of uniform patterns, even as small as 5 μm, under UV light irradiation. Benefiting from the single component feature, field-effect transistors with individual patterned thin films display satisfactorily uniform performances. Moreover, this semiconducting photoresist has proven effective for efficiently photopatterning other polymer semiconductors, demonstrating its versatility.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have emerged in recent years as prospective organic semiconductors in solar energy conversion. However, developing highly efficient conjugated polymers is still a grand challenge. Herein, we first demonstrate the fabrication of two donor−π–acceptor (D−π–A) conjugated polymers (N-DEA-TBP and L-DEA-DBP) by incorporating redox-active anthraquinone into pyrene units through acetenyl linkages. Comprehensive experiments and density functional theory calculations reveal that the network-conjugated chain and acetenyl-bridged conjugated structure facilitate charge utilization and separation/transfer in the skeleton. Such advantages of N-DEA-TBP endow it with outstanding activity for the photoreduction of CO2 in H2O without a sacrificial agent and photosensitizer, affording CO as the sole carbonaceous product with a generation rate of 70.25 μmol·g–1·h–1 and nearly 100% selectivity, which is almost 2.6-fold as high as that of L-DEA-DBP. Furthermore, N-DEA-TBP also exhibits an attractive photocatalytic performance for selective aerobic oxidation of sulfides under visible light irradiation. This study contributes new insights into their underlying structure and morphology for enhancing charge separation and transfer.

Abstract:A dual-functional copolymer, poly(4-styrenesulfonyl azide-co-t-butyl-methacrylate), with built-in photoacid labile and photocrosslinkable components was designed and synthesized by radical copolymerization. The mixture of copolymer and photoacid generators was spin coated on aminosilane treated Si wafers and polycarbonate (PC). When exposed to 365 nm UV light, photoacids were generated, which decomposed the acid labile groups, t-butyl- ester, to carboxylic acid in the exposed region, leading to drastic change of wettability from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after devel- oping the film in an aqueous base solution. The patterned polymer film could be subsequently photoimmobilized on the substrate under 254 nm deep UV exposure through CAH insertion via exited azide groups. 1 H-NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectra con- firmed the synthesis of the copolymer, and the photodecomposi- tion and photografting reactions occurred orthogonally at 365 and 254 nm, respectively, without interfering each other. On the pat- terned surfaces, including a hexagonal dot array and a gradient line array, we demonstrated selective wetting in the 365 nm exposed regions. On the gradient line array, we showed an inter- esting ratchet wetting pattern. Synthesis and Optoelectronic Applications of d-p Conjugated Polymers with a Di-metallaaromatic Acceptor

Abstract:The development of conjugated polymers especially n-type polymer semiconductors is powered by the design and synthesis of electron-deficient building blocks. Herein, a strong acceptor building block with di-metallaaromatic structure was designed and synthesized by connecting two electron-deficient metallaaromatic units through a & pi;-conjugated bridge. Then, a double-monomer polymerization methodology was developed for inserting it into conjugated polymer scaffolds to yield metallopolymers. The isolated well-defined model oligomers indicated polymer structures. Kinetic studies based on nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies shed light on the polymerization process. Interestingly, the resulted metallopolymers with d(& pi;)-p(& pi;) conjugations are very promising electron transport layer materials which can boost photovoltaic performance of an organic solar cell, with power conversion efficiency up to 18.28 % based on the PM6 : EH-HD-4F non-fullerene system. This work not only provides a facile route to construct metallaaromatic conjugated polymers with various functional groups, but also discovers their potential applications for the first time.

Abstract:Development of new methodologies for synthesizing polymers with novel structures and unique properties is a fundamentally important area in polymer science. Herein, a novel synthetic strategy to conjugated poly(p-arylene dihalodiene)s (PADs) with high regio- and stereoselectivity was developed. In the presence of PdBr2 and CuBr2, the polymerizations of terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly in air without heating to generate PADs in high yields (up to 95.3%) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 915 900). Low-cost inorganic CuBr2 played dual roles as cocatalyst and comonomer. The PADs possessed good solubility and film-forming ability. Their thin films exhibited high refractive indices (1.7149-1.7245) and would be fabricated into well-resolved fluorescent photopatterns by photolithography. Thanks to the vinyl bromine functionality, the PADs could undergo efficient postmodification to afford polymers with more sophisticated structures and applications.

Abstract:In this study, versatile alkoxycarbonyl substituents were incorporated onto the azaisoindigo (AIID)-based polymeric π-skeleton, affording two novel polymers PAZPT and PAZPTEt. The PAZPT has the alkoxycarbonyl groups substituted on its thiophene unit, whereas the PAZPTEt has both the thiophene and thieno[3,2-b]thiophen units substituted with alkoxycarbonyl groups. As results, PAZPT has more planar conjugated backbone conformation than that of PAZPTEt. Experimental characterization results indicated that alkoxycarbonyl substituents can effectively pull down the frontier molecular orbital energy levels and optimize the solubility and molecular packing mode of conjugated polymers. All the field-effect transistors based on the two polymers showed ambipolar carrier transport characteristics. Such results show that introducing alkoxycarbonyl substituents on polymeric π-skeleton might be a potential approach in fine-tuning the semiconducting properties of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)‐based polymer semiconductors have drawn great attention in the field of organic electronics due to the planar structure, decent solubilizing capability, and high crystallinity. However, the electron‐deficient capacity of DPP derivatives are not strong enough, leading to relatively high‐lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the corresponding polymers. As a result, n‐type and ambipolar DPP‐based polymers are rare and their electron mobilities also lag far behind the p‐type counterparts, which limits the development of important p‐n‐junction‐based electronic devices. Therefore, new design strategies have been proposed recent years to develop n‐type/ambipolar DPP‐based polymers with improved performances. In this view, these molecular design strategies are summarized, including copolymerization of DPP with different acceptors and weak donors, DPP flanked aromatic ring modification, DPP‐core ring expansion and DPP dimerization. The relationship between the chemical structures and organic thin‐film transistor performances is intensively discussed. Finally, a perspective on future trends in the molecular design of DPP‐based n‐type/ambipolar polymers is also proposed.

Conjugated Polymer‐Based Photo‐Crosslinker for Efficient Photo‐Patterning of Polymer Semiconductors

Abstract:A new conjugated polymer‐based photo‐crosslinker, PN3, with phenyl‐substituted azide groups in the side chains, is developed for efficient photo‐patterning of polymer semiconductors with superior performance, featuring a significantly low UV light exposure dose, high sensitivity (S), and high contrast (γ). Photo‐patterning of polymer semiconductors using photo‐crosslinkers has shown potential for organic circuit fabrication via solution processing techniques. However, the performance of patterning, including resolution (R), UV light exposure dose, sensitivity (S), and contrast (γ), remains unsatisfactory. In this study, a novel conjugated polymer based photo‐crosslinker (PN3, Figure 1a) is reported for the first time, which entails phenyl‐substituted azide groups in its side chains. Due to the potential π–π interactions between the conjugated backbone of PN3 and those of polymer semiconductors, PN3 exhibits superior miscibility with polymer semiconductors compared to the commonly used small molecule photo‐crosslinker 4Bx (Figure 1a). Consequently, photo‐patterning of polymer semiconductors with PN3 demonstrates improved performance with much lower UV light exposure dose, higher S and higher γ compared to 4Bx. By utilizing electron beam lithography, patterned arrays of polymer semiconductors with resolutions down to 500 nm and clearer edges are successfully fabricated using PN3. Furthermore, patterned arrays of PDPP4T, the p‐type semiconductor (Figure 1b), after being doped, can function as source‐drain electrodes for fabricating field‐effect transistors (FETs) with comparable charge mobility and significantly lower sub‐threshold swing value compared to those with gold electrodes.

Abstract:Organic dye semiconductors have received increasing attention as the next generation of semiconductors, and one of their potential applications is as a core component of organic transistors. In this study, two novel diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) dye core-based materials were designed and separately prepared using Stille coupling reactions under different palladium catalyst conditions. The molecular weights and elemental compositions were tested to demonstrate that both catalysts could be used to successfully prepare materials of this structure, with the main differences being the weight-average molecular weight and the dispersion index. PDPP-2Py-2Tz I with a longer conjugation length exhibited better thermodynamic stability than the counterpart polymer PDPP-2Py-2Tz II. The intrinsic optical properties of the polymers were relatively similar, while the electrochemical tests showed small differences in their energy levels. The polymers obtained with different catalysts displayed similar and moderate electron mobility in transistor devices, while PDPP-2Py-2Tz I possessed a higher switching ratio. Our study provides a comparison of such dye materials under different catalytic conditions and also demonstrates the great potential of dye materials for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is attractive for building conjugated polymers for polymer solar cell (PSC) and organic field effect transistor (OFET). Yet the usual access to DPP conjugated polymers is via donor-acceptor (D-A) two-component polymerization. However, the number of excellent polymers based on the D-A combination is still limited, which promotes researchers to explore new strategy for preparation of novel conjugated polymers and to understand their structure-property relationship. In this work, a DPP-based polymer P1 was first obtained with co-polymerization of DPP (A) and alkoxyl benzene (D). Further, two novel polymers (P2 and P3) were developed via introducing a third electron-deficient monomer X (difluoro-benzothiadiazole or naphthalene diimide) in the polymerization process. P1 - P3 polymers (molecular weight: 3.83 x 10(4), 5.30 x 10(4) and 6.56 x 10(4)) showed good solubility in common organic solvents. Due to the hybridization of the molecular orbitals between their three components (D, A and X), P2 and P3 showed narrower bandgaps (1.26 and 1.27 eV) than P1, and their absorption thus red-shifted up to 1000 nm in comparison to that of D-A polymer P1 (bandgap of 1.50 eV). The introduction of electron-deficient monomers also deepened the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of P2 and P3 to -5.28 and -5.33 eV, which was beneficial to a larger open circuit voltage (V-OC) in PSCs. Moreover, the introduction of the third monomer X altered the film properties of the polymers. It showed that P1 with preference of face-on orientation exhibited a good power conversion efficiency (PCE) in PSCs, while P2 demonstrated an improved hole mobility in OFET due to the preferable edge-on orientation. When blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), P1 showed a PCE of 2.56%, with a V-OC of 0.68 V, a short circuit current density (J(SC)) of 5.71 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 0.66, while P2 gave a lower PCE of 1.79%, with a V-OC of 0.71 V, a J(SC) of 3.91 mA cm(-2) and a FF of 0.65. This work provides references for the design of novel conjugated polymers for PSCs and OFETs.
Simultaneous Incorporation of Two Types of Azo‐Groups in the Side Chains of a Conjugated D–A Polymer for Logic Control of the Semiconducting Performance by Light Irradiation

Abstract:A new design strategy for photoresponsive semiconducting polymer with tri‐stable semiconducting states is reported by simultaneous incorporation of tetra‐ortho‐methoxy‐substituted azobenzene (mAzo) and arylazopyrazole (pAzo) in the side chains. The trans‐to‐cis transformations for mAzo and pAzo groups can sequentially occur within the polymer thin film after sequential 560 and 365 nm light irradiation. Remarkably, the trans–cis isomerization of mAzo and pAzo groups can modulate the thin film crystallinity. Accordingly, the performances of the resulting field‐effect transistors (FETs) can be reversibly modulated, leading to tri‐stable semiconducting states after sequential 560, 365, and 470 nm light irradiation. Therefore, the device performance can be logically controlled by light irradiation at three different wavelengths. In addition, with light irradiation and device current as the input and output signals, the three‐value logic gate by using single FET device can be successfully mimicked.

Abstract:Organic conjugated polymers with long-range conjugation generally have strong light absorption capacity in the visible light region and impressive performance in charge transfer, which endows them great application potential in the field of opto-electronic materials. However, there are few reports on their use in photocatalytic reactions. At present, it has been reported that a variety of donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic dyes can be used in efficient organic photocatalytic transformations. We designed and synthesized one-dimensional organic conjugated polymers pPhCzBP-Th and pPhCzBP-DTh with D-A structure, and proved that they are good heterogeneous photo-redox catalysts, which can photocatalyze hydrodehalogenation reduction of α-bromoacetophenone and its derivatives. Due to the strong reducibility of the excited state, pPhCzBP-Th can also efficiently reduce α-chloroacetophenone. Furthermore, by simply wrapping the catalyst powder, high-efficient separation of products and catalysts recycling can be achieved.

Abstract:A novel, bifunctional, quadruple hydrogen-bonding ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) unit bridged by photochromic dithienylethene (1) has been synthesized, which affords linear assemblies in solution and undergoes concentration-dependent ring-opening polymerization. The two UPy functional groups of 1 can dimerize intramolecularly to form a cyclic monomer with the two thienyl rings fixed in a parallel conformation, which prohibits its photocyclization. We exploited the photochemical reactivity and resonance difference of the linker of the bis-UPy derivative as well as using the more typical H-1 NMR, DOSY, and Ubbelohde viscometry methods to investigate for the first time the ring-chain polymerization mechanism. Moreover, we fabricated a mixed polymer film with a fluorescent dye noncovalently endcapping the linear photochromic assemblies through quadruple hydrogen bonds, which showed nondestructive fluorescent read-out ability for data storage by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the fluorescent dye to the closed form of the diarylethene.

Abstract:By virtue of noninvasive regulations by light, photocontrolled polymerizations have attracted considerable attention for the precision synthesis of macromolecules. However, a cationic polymerization with simultaneous photo-control and tacticity-regulation remains elusive and challenging to achieve. Herein, we introduce an asymmetric ion-pairing photoredox catalysis strategy, which allows for the development of a stereoselective cationic polymerization with light control for the first time. By employing a chiral ion pair photoredox catalyst (PC+/*A–) con-sisting of a photoredox active cationic part (PC+) and a sterically confined chiral anion (*A–) to deliver the stereochemical control, the stereoselective cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers with the assistance of photo control can be achieved with high isotactic selectivity (up to 91% m) at a remarkable low level of catalyst loading (50 ppm).

Energy band gap modulation and photoinduced electron transfer fluorescence sensing properties of D–A conjugated polymer containing benzotriazole

Abstract:Two new conjugated polymers containing benzotriazole were synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction, and the polymer with lower energy band gap was created by designing the structure of the acceptor unit by introducing thiophene unit at both ends of the benzotriazole. Surprisingly, the fluorescence emission of D–A conjugated polymer with modified unit shifted from blue to yellow light, and the polymer had a higher fluorescence quantum efficiency. In addition, thiophen benzimidazole was introduced as the side chain unit for the study of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The addition of Fe3+ and Cu2+ caused significant quenching of fluorescence of polymers, and the polymer with high energy band gap exhibited higher fluorescence quenching ability. Moreover, when exploring the fluorescence sensing of [P‐Fe3+] complex in the presence of anion, it was observed that the PO43− competed with [P‐Fe3+] complex for Fe3+, interrupting the fluorescence sensing mechanism eventually leading to the recovery of fluorescence. The design approach utilized in this survey for D–A conjugated polymer paves the way for a novel mean of functional control of fluorescence sensor based on PET fluorescence sensing.

Abstract:In this paper we report two DPP-based conjugated molecules DPPBT and DPPTT in which the respective electron withdrawing moieties 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole are flanked by two DPP moieties. For comparison, DPPBZ containing 1,4-diethynylbenzene and two DPP moieties were synthesized. HOMO/LUMO energies of DPPBT, DPPTT and DPPBZ were estimated on the basis of cyclic voltammetric data. Owing to the fact that LUMO energies of DPPBT and DPPTT were lowered to ca. -3.5 eV, thin films of both DPPBT and DPPTT exhibit ambipolar semiconducting properties under N-2 atmosphere with hole and electron mobilities up to 0.25 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 0.09 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. In comparison, thin film of DPPBZ just shows p-type semiconducting property. Notably, ambipolar semiconductors with relatively high carrier mobility are rarely reported for DPP-containing small conjugated molecules. Alternatively, both DPPBT and DPPTT can function as electron donors for photovoltaic materials. Thin films of DPPTT:PC71BM and DPPBT: PC71BM at a weight ratio of 1 : 1 exhibit PCEs of 4.18% and 2.44%, respectively, with V-OC higher than 0.95 V.
