Abstract:In this paper we present a new method of solving the classical diophantine equation $A^4+B^4=C^4+D^4$. Two methods of solving this equation, given by Euler, yield parametric solutions given by polynomials of degrees 7 and 13. Several other parametric solutions are now known, and with the exception of one solution of degree 11, all the published solutions are of degrees $6n+1$ for some integer $n$. The method described in this paper yields new parametric solutions of degrees 21, 39 and 75, that is, degrees that are expressible as $6n+3$.

On a Pair of Diophantine Equations

Abstract:For relatively prime natural numbers $a$ and $b$, we study the two equations $ax+by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax+by+1= (a-1)(b-1)/2$, which arise from the study of cyclotomic polynomials. Previous work showed that exactly one equation has a nonnegative solution, and the solution is unique. Our first result gives criteria to determine which equation is used for a given pair $(a,b)$. We then use the criteria to study the sequence of equations used by the pair $(a_n/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})}, a_{n+1}/\gcd{(a_n, a_{n+1})})$ from several special sequences $(a_n)_{n\geq 1}$. Finally, fixing $k \in \mathbb{N}$, we investigate the periodicity of the sequence of equations used by the pair $(k/\gcd{(k, n)}, n/\gcd{(k, n)})$ as $n$ increases.

Abstract:Bumby proved that the only positive solutions to the quartic Diophantine equation 3 x 4 − 2 y 2 = 1 are ( x , y ) = (1, 1), (3, 11). In this paper, we extend this result and prove that if the class number of the field Q(√(1-3a^2)) is not divisible by 2, the equation 3 a 2 x 4 − By 2 = 1 has at most two solutions. However, both solutions occur in only one case, a = 1, b = 2, as solved by Bumby. The proof utilizes the law of quadratic reciprocity that seems very rare in solving Diophantine equations, and the solution will be also obtained effectively through the proof when it exists.

Abstract:In this paper, show that the Diophantine equation $ x^2+(x+1)^2=w^4 $ has only two solutions $ (0,1) $ and $ (119,13)$ in non-negative integers $ x $ and $ w $. This equation concerned a classic problem posed by Pierre de Fermat, wonders about finding a Pythagorean triangle in which the hypotenuse and the sum of the arms are square. We review the method of finding the smallest solution presented by Fermat, and the relationship between the primitive Pythagorean triples and the Pell's equation, Finally, we present an algorithm for finding primitive solutions, which actually enabled us to find other solutions.

Abstract:Ramanujan, in his lost notebook, gave an interesting identity, which generates infinite families of solutions to Euler's Diophantine equation $A^3 + B^3 = C^3 + D^3$. In this paper, we produce a few infinite families of solutions to the aforementioned Diophantine equation as well as for the Diophantine equation $A^4 + B^4 + C^4 + D^4 + E^4 = F^4$ in the spirit of Ramanujan.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.
Multiple New Important Conjectures on Equivalence to Perfect Cuboid and Euler Brick

Abstract:Nobody has discovered any perfect cuboid and there is no formula to deliver all possible Euler bricks. During investigations of famous open problems related to the perfect cuboid and Euler brick; I have found some new important conjectures on Pythagorean triples and biquadratic Diophantine equation [4] which are reduced & quivalence form for perfect cuboid and Euler brick problems. The details of the conjectures have been provided in Sections 2-3. If any perfect cuboid exists it will be only among the solutions of six conjectures and all the Euler bricks are only among the solutions of next three conjectures [4]. For example, if any odd $n\in \mathbb{N}$ satisfy $n=e^2-f^2=g^2-h^2=k^2-l^2$ and $e^2f^2=g^2h^2+k^2l^2$; then we can discover a perfect cuboid of type 1 as $\{e^2-f^2,2gh,2kl,g^2+h^2,k^2+l^2,2ef,e^2+f^2\}$ having $(e^2-f^2,2gh,2kl)$ having $(e^2-f^2,2gh,2kl)$ as its edges; $(g^2+h^2,k^2+l^2,2ef)$ as its face diagonals and $e^2+f^2$ as its body diagonal where $e,f,g,h,k,l~(>1)\in \mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:In this article, we are interested in whether a product of three consecutive integers $a (a+1) (a+2)$ divides another such product $b (b+1) (b+2)$. If this happens, we prove that there is some gaps between them, namely $b \gg \frac{a \log a)^{1/6}}{\log \log a)^{1/3}}$. We also consider other polynomial sequences such as $a^2 (a^2 + l)$ dividing $b^2 (b^2 + l)$ for some fixed integer $l$. Our method is based on effective Liouville-Baker-Feldman theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\, 3$ or 4 to produce numerical curios involving square roots, cube roots and fourth roots, and as another application of these solutions, we show how to construct examples of geometric series with an interesting property.

Abstract:The problem of finding perfect Euler cuboids or proving their non-existence is an old unsolved problem in mathematics. The third cuboid conjecture is the last of the three propositions suggested as intermediate stages in proving the non-existence of perfect Euler cuboids. It is associated with a certain Diophantine equation of the order 12. In this paper a structural theorem for the solutions of this Diophantine equation is proved.

Abstract:We study small non-trivial solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$, with $q$ being an odd natural number, in an average sense. This extends previous work of the authors in which they considered the case of prime power moduli $q$. Above, $\alpha_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $\alpha_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(\alpha_2\alpha_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $\alpha_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $\alpha_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_3,q)=1$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ and $q$ is large enough. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. Key tools in our work are Burgess's estimate for character sums over short intervals and Heath-Brown's estimate for character sums with binary quadratic forms over small regions whose proofs depend on the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. We also formulate a refined conjecture about the size of the smallest solution of a ternary quadratic congruence, using information about the Diophantine properties of its coefficients.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite sequences of integers that may be written as sums of squares of two nonzero integers. We first find infinitely many integers $n$ such that $n, n+h$ and $n+k$ are all sums of two squares where $h$ and $k$ are two arbitrary integers, and as an immediate corollary obtain, in parametric terms, three consecutive integers that are sums of two squares. Similarly we obtain $n$ in parametric terms such that all the four integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4$ are sums of two squares. We also find infinitely many integers $n$ such that all the five integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4, n+5$ are sums of two squares, and finally, we find infinitely many arithmetic progressions, with common difference $4$, of five integers all of which are sums of two squares.

Abstract:Consider a pair of right triangles with an equal hypotenuse. This turns out to solve the diophantine system of equations a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 = e 2 in integers. To this system we associate a family of elliptic curves with defining equation y 2 = ( x − a 2 )( x − b 2 )( x − c 2 )+ a 2 b 2 c 2 . We show that there exists a subfamily of rank ≥ 3 over Q( m , n , k , l ) and obtain a subfamily of rank (exactly) four over Q( k ) and determine a set of its free generators. Besides, we show there exist infinitely many elliptic curves of rank ≥ 5 parameterized by a rank five quartic elliptic curve. We also find a few particular examples with higher ranks. The families we construct have Z/2Z torsion subgroups in general. The previous work [13] has obtained similar Pythagorean quadruplet elliptic curve families in two parameters with rank ≥ 3. (Recall that by a Pythagorean quadruplet ( a , b , c , d ), we mean an integer solution to the quadratic equation a 2 + b 2 = c 2 + d 2 .)

Abstract:In this note we consider the title Diophantine equation from both theoretical as well as experimental point of view. In particular, we prove that for $k=4, 6$ and each choice of the signs our equation has infinitely many co-prime positive integer solutions. For $k=5, 7$ and all choices of the signs we computed all co-prime positive integer solutions $(x, y, a, b)$ satisfying the condition $\op{max}\{a, b\}\leq 50000$.
