Abstract:Steel slag is a by-product of the steel industry and usually contains a high amount of f-CaO and f-MgO, which will result in serious soundness problems once used as a binding material and/or aggregates. To relieve this negative effect, carbonation treatment was believed to be one of the available and reliable methods. By carbonation treatment of steel slag, the phases of f-CaO and f-MgO can be effectively transformed into CaCO3 and MgCO3, respectively. This will not only reduce the expansive risk of steel slag to improve the utilization of steel slag further but also capture and store CO2 due to the mineralization process to reduce carbon emissions. In this study, based on the physical and chemical properties of steel slag, the carbonation mechanism, factors affecting the carbonation process, and the application of carbonated steel slag were reviewed. Eventually, the research challenge was also discussed.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation emerges as a promising technology to tackle a contemporary challenge: climate change. This method entails the interaction of carbon dioxide with metal-oxide-bearing materials to produce solid carbonates resembling common substances (chalk, antacids, or baking soda). Given that steelmaking industries contribute to 8% of the global total emissions annually, the repurposing of their by-products holds the potential to mitigate CO 2 production. Steel slag is a by-product of the metallurgical industry which is suitable for capturing CO 2 due to its chemical composition, containing high CaO (24%–65%) and MgO (3%–20%) amounts, which increases the reactivity with the CO 2 . Moreover, the carbonation process can improve the hydraulic and mechanical properties of steel slag, making this by-product interesting to be reused in building materials. Different studies have developed in the last years addressing the possibilities of reducing the environmental impact of steel products, by CO 2 sequestration. This study is dedicated to reviewing the basics of mineral carbonation applied to steel slag, along with recent advancements in research. Special emphasis is placed on identifying parameters that facilitate the reactions and exploring potential applications for the resulting products. The advantages and disadvantages of steel slag carbonation for the industrialization of the process are also discussed.

Abstract:Steel slag, as a major solid waste in the steel industry, and its rational disposal is of significant meaning to the carbon emissions of the steel industry. Using steel slag as the carbon sequestration material to absorb the carbon dioxide from flue gases in the production process can realize the waste reuse and at the same time slow down the process of global warming. Although there have been many reports on the carbonation of steel slag, there is a lack of systematic reviews on the process and effect of steel slag carbonation. In this paper, the carbonation methods of steel slag and the evaluation methods of carbonation sequestration are reviewed in detail, and the effect of environmental factors on carbonation of steel slag are described. The mineral transformation and mechanism during carbonation are investigated, and the environmental and social benefits of steel slag carbonation are briefly explained. The study shows that aqueous carbonation is a widely used technical route, and temperature is the most significant factor affecting the carbonation effect of steel slag. Steel slag carbonation has a very broad application prospect and has significant technological advantages in the global warming background.

Abstract:In response to the pressing global issue of reducing carbon emissions and the crucial technical challenges of fully utilizing steel slag, researchers have been studying an accelerated carbonation process that entails the carbonation of basic oxides in steel slag to store CO2. However, despite its promising potential, the process has yet to see widespread industrial application. The latest research progress in the area of mineral carbonation processes, both direct and indirect, that are used to capture, utilize, and store carbon in steel slag are summarized. Given the limited scale of steel slag carbonation and the underutilized products that can be derived from it, a new research focus is proposed for examining the regulation of calcium carbonate crystal forms during carbonation using the Ca source in steel slag. Precise control of synthesis variables will help to ensure accurate control of calcium carbonate precipitation in the carbonation process. A summary of the effects of synthesis variables on CaCO3 crystal form and the latest research findings on controlling aragonite morphology are provided. The review is concluded with a discussion of the potential applications and future development prospects of CaCO3 whiskers.

Abstract:An ambitious goal has been set to limit global temperature increase within 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels. Iron and steel industry as one of the main industrial sectors, has always been accompanied by high energy input and high carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon capture and storage is one of the important technologies for the iron and steel industry to achieve deep reduction of emissions. Economic and effective material for carbon dioxide sequestration is still a problem that needs to be solved. In order to meet the challenges of the future, the feasibility of using steelmaking slag to promote carbon neutral in the iron and steel industry is discussed in this study. The present work systematically reviews the carbonation of steelmaking slag from three aspects: the carbonation processes and mechanism of steelmaking slag; the effect of operational conditions on carbon dioxide sequestration ratio and reaction rate; and carbon dioxide sequestration capacity of different types of steelmaking slag. The results show that steelmaking slag has a great potential for carbon dioxide sequestration, which can reduce almost 12–17 % of carbon dioxide emissions from the iron and steel industry. Moreover, challenges faced by the use of steelmaking slag for carbon dioxide sequestration and the prospects for the utilization of carbonated steelmaking slag are summarized.

Abstract:The direct carbonation of steel slag has emerged as a promising approach for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) utilization and sequestration, holding potential for advancing sustainable steel production. Despite considerably high expectations for these cleaner upcycling pathways, their maturity level remains relatively low and large-scale direct carbonation of steel slag is largely untested. To facilitate steel slag carbonation on a scale necessary for a zero-carbon future economy, this article provides a comprehensive review of fundamental carbonation mechanisms and critical parameters governing the reaction process, including temperature, pressure, reaction time, liquid-to-solid ratio, and CO 2 partial pressure. The study critically examines the unique interactions among these process parameters, which can either limit or enhance the process optimization. The spectrum of scientific challenges associated with this pathway, including reaction rate limitations and the carbonated product valorization, particularly as a binder or aggregate in the construction sector, are identified and addressed. These insights aim to enhance the carbonation potential of steel slag for possible cleaner upcycling implementation pathways, ultimately facilitating the development of more efficient and sustainable carbon capture utilization and sequestration (CCUS) technologies. The proposed improvements are expected to be instrumental in promoting sustainable practices, not only to foster the decarbonization of the steelmaking industry but also in aiding other hard-to-abate sectors, such as the cement and concrete industry, in achieving their own decarbonization goals.

Abstract:Carbon mineralization technology has emerged as a promising method for permanently sequestering CO2 by transforming it into a thermodynamically stable solid carbonate material. Recently, alkaline industrial waste, particularly from steel and iron-making processes, has been identified as a proper feedstock due to its high potential for CO2 storage and the ability to reduce landfill strain significantly. In this context, this review focuses on the possibilities and challenges associated with the carbon mineralization of steel and iron-making slag. Given that the composition and characteristics of feedstock play crucial roles in carbon mineralization, in-depth examinations of the generation of by-products and the corresponding physicochemical properties were conducted. In the context of the carbon mineralization process, our primary focus was on ex-situ carbon mineralization, which encompasses both direct and indirect carbonation routes, while elucidating the intricate mechanisms underlying both types of carbonation. Current challenges such as low leaching efficiency rates, slow kinetics, complex slag structures and silicate passivation phenomena are also addressed. For practical applications, it is essential to integrate valuable material production with the carbon mineralization process. Accordingly, various methods for producing precipitated calcium carbonates, construction materials with heavy-metal stabilization, valuable element recovery, and possible integration with hydrogen production processes, were introduced. Lastly, we provide an overview of the current state of the art of carbon mineralization technology and suggest future research directions.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation can simultaneously realize the effective treatment of CO2 and iron and steel slag; thus, it is of great significance for the low carbon and sustainable development of iron and steel industry. In this article, the researches of mineral carbonation process using iron and steel slag as feedstock are reviewed, and the carbonation reaction mechanism and the parameters affecting the reaction rate and carbonation degree are analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of different enforcement approaches, such as ultrasonic enhancement, mixed calcination, microbial enhancement, and cyclic coprocessing on mineral carbonation reaction, is introduced. The additional effects of mineral carbonation, such as solving the problem of poor volume stability of steel slag, weakening the leaching of heavy metal ions, and reducing the pH of the leachate, are also illustrated. Moreover, issues related to mineral carbonation technology that should be emphasized upon soon, such as the production of valuable products, use of industrial wastewater, aqueous phase recycling use, multiparameter coupling analysis, and research on the properties of carbonation residues, are also discussed, which contribute some perspectives to the future development of mineral carbonation of iron and steel slag.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Steel slag is a solid waste product generated during the carbonation stage of steelmaking. It has high levels of heavy metals and substantial amounts of free calcium and magnesium oxide, making it unsuitable for use as a cement material. Furthermore, the disposal of steel slag in landfills requires many resources and can seriously contaminate the surrounding environment. One method of reducing its negative environmental impact is carbonation, which involves reacting steel slag with carbon dioxide to form stable minerals. However, many parameters influence the carbonation efficiency of steelmaking slag, including temperature, time, particle size, pressure, CO2 concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, moisture content, humidity, additives, etc. To this end, this paper comprehensively reviews the most important steel slag carbonation-influencing factors. Moreover, it compares the characteristics from two perspectives based on their causes and effects on carbonation. Finally, this article reviews earlier studies to identify the factors that affect steel slag carbonation and the potential of carbonated steel slag as a sustainable construction material. Based on previous research, it systematically examines all the elements for future work that need to be improved.

Abstract:The rapid increase in steel slag generation globally highlights the urgent need to manage the disposal or utilization processes. In addition to conventional landfill disposal, researchers have successfully reused steel slag in the construction, chemical, and agricultural fields. With the large portions of alkaline silicate mineral content, steel slag can also be used as a suitable material for carbon capture to mitigate global warming. This article comprehensively reviews the environmental performance of steel slag utilization, especially emphasizing quantitative evaluation using life cycle assessment. This paper first illustrates the production processes, properties, and applications of steel slag, and then summarizes the key findings of the environmental benefits for steel slag utilization using life cycle assessment from the reviewed literature. This paper also identifies the limitations of quantifying the environmental benefits using life cycle assessment. The results indicate steel slag is largely utilized in pavement concrete and/or block as a substitution for natural aggregates. The associated environmental benefits are mostly attributed to the avoidance of the large amount of cement utilized. The environmental benefits for the substitution of traditional energy-intensive material and carbonation treatment are further discussed in detail. Due to the presence of heavy metals, the potential risks to human and ecological health caused by the manufacturing process and usage stage are examined. Finally, the current challenges and global social implications for steel slag valorization are summarized.

Abstract:The disposal of steel slag in landfills not only squanders precious landfill resources but also results in significant environmental contamination. Steel slag can be used to replace cement and natural aggregates in concrete. Nonetheless, utilizing untreated steel slag directly presents a substantial hazard to the structural characteristics and durability of concrete. To avoid this problem, study on accelerated carbonation of steel slag as construction materials has been extensively conducted. This review paper begins by introducing the classification and physicochemical properties of steel slag; it then describes the typical approaches of steel slag carbonation, including direct carbonation (dry carbonation, wet carbonation) and indirect carbonation (pH-swing, microbial carbonation), along with their processes and carbonation mechanisms. Furthermore, based on the reviewed literature, the influences of various reaction parameters such as reaction time, liquid-to-solid ratio, temperature, additives, CO2 concentration, pressure, pH on carbonation effectiveness are analyzed. Also, the impact of carbonated steel slag on the micro-pore structure, stability, workability, and mechanical properties of concrete is discussed. Finally, the challenges and future work of using carbonated steel slag as construction materials are provided.

Abstract:We investigate the performance of steel slag during the carbonation-calcination looping as a potential CO2 adsorbent. The existence of portlandite in the steel slag provided a maximum theoretical CO2 capture capacity of 112.7 mgCO(2) g(slag)(-1), and the maximum carbonation conversion of 39.8% was achieved in simulated flue gases with only 5 min duration of carbonation. Sintering of the steel slag particles during both the carbonation and calcination processes, especially the destruction of the 3 nm pores, is the main cause for the deactivation of steel slag. Carbonation-calcination looping of steel slag can significantly improve its total CO2 capture capacity compared to the conventional technical route of direct carbonation sequestration, thus providing an alternative and more feasible option for the use of alkaline industrial wastes to capture CO2 from industrial sources, such as the iron and steel production facilities.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) mineralization technology has attracted significant attention, due to the synergistic terminal treatment of CO2 and industrial waste. The combined CO2 mineralization process with steel enterprises is a promising route to simultaneously address CO2 emissions and SS treatment. Recently, a serial of the relevant work focus on a single type of steel slag (SS), and the understanding of CO2 absorption by mineralization of various SS is very lacking. Meanwhile, it is urgent requirement for systematic summary and discussion on how to make full use of the mineralized products produced after the mineralization of CO2 in SS. This review aims to investigate the progress of CO2 mineralization using SS, including the potential applications of mineralization products, as well as the environmental impact and risk assessment of mineralization product applications. Currently, the application of SS mineralization products is primarily focused on their use as construction materials with low economic value. With usage of the mineralization products for ecological restoration (e.g. sandy soil remediation) was treated as an advanced route, but still remaining challenge in functional materials preparation, and its technical economy and possible hazards need to be further explored by long-term experimental tests.

Abstract:Escalating industrial CO 2 emissions necessitate innovative carbon capture and utilization strategies. This study explores the potential of mineral-carbonation of steelmaking slags, particularly White Slag (WS) and various Refractory Wastes (RWs), to mitigate CO 2 emissions and valorize industrial wastes. Experiments were performed with waste materials from the production lines at CELSA (Barcelona, Spain). We delved into direct aqueous carbonation, evaluating the performance and characteristics of these wastes under different experimental conditions. Our findings reveal that all slags can effectively sequester CO 2 . This process is effective not only for pure CO 2 but also for diluted flue gases under mild conditions (≤ 100 oC, ≤ 6 bar). Specifically, WS exhibited peak CO 2 sequestration capacities (SC) of 359.79 gCO 2 /kgslag (pure CO 2 ) and 276.65 gCO 2 /kgslag (diluted flue gas). In contrast, the RWs presented different kinetic, reaching a maximum SC of 311 gCO 2 /kgslag after prolonged times. Given the large inhomogeneity of RWs, individual analysis of distinct RW fractions revealed significant variations in carbonation performance. Tundish RW exhibited the highest CO 2 sequestration capacity, emphasizing the importance of waste source and mineral composition in the carbonation. Chemical and morphological evaluations confirmed the transformation of CaO to CaCO 3 , with MgO remaining largely inert. Additionally, the process indicated potential environmental benefits by reducing the mobility of toxic metals, particularly Pb, suggesting an ancillary avenue for waste treatment. This study underscores the utility of CO 2 mineralization as a dual-benefit approach within the circular economy framework, offering insights into its application for sustainable waste management and CO 2 emission reduction in the steel industry.

Abstract:Steelmaking slag mineral carbonation is a possible technology for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the atmosphere, which has been studied both in aqueous and dilute alkali medium. A set of variables, the stirring speed, reaction time, alkali to slag ratio and reaction temperature, were systematically investigated. The results indicated that reaction time, alkali to slag ratio and reaction temperature were the major factors for CO2 mineral sequestration. Under the optimal conditions with the alkali to slag ratio of 4 % at 80 °C, 16.64 g CO2 can be sequestrated in per 100g steel slag and both calcite and aragonite were generated. This work would be of significance to understand the reaction mechanism deeply and provide valuable information for further study in this field.

Abstract:<p>Steel slag is a by-product discharged from the steelmaking process, which is characterized by abundant free calcium/magnesium oxide, low cementitious properties, and high contents of heavy metals. The disposal of steel slag at landfills not only wastes valuable resources but also causes serious pollutions to the environment. However, the direct use of untreated steel slag poses a great risk to the mechanical properties and durability of the steel slag-derived composites. In recent years, research on the use of steel slag as eco-friendly construction materials has experienced an unprecedented advance, particularly with the discovery that accelerated carbonation is conducive to improving the inferior properties. This review summarizes the various types of steel slags based on chemical/mineral compositions and the related physic-chemical properties. It also highlights recent progress on the use of accelerated carbonation to improve the quality of steel slag in the context of a wide range of influencing factors, such as temperature, reaction time, CO<sub>2</sub> concentration and pressure, moisture, particle size and gradation of steel slag, and additives. A major challenge is to dissect the interconnectedness between the influencing factors and their relative contributions to the property improvement of steel slag. After that, we introduce the practical applications of carbonated steel slag with improved properties. Finally, we provide new insights into the mechanisms and challenges of using accelerated carbonation as a treatment of steel slag for future research and industrial applications.</p>

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy and industrialization, the consumption of natural resources has risen sharply. A large number of greenhouse gases and industrial solid waste emissions have exacerbated global warming, resulting in a series of environmental degradation problems. Using natural minerals or industrial solid waste for carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) is considered to be a feasible and promising technology. From the perspective of circular economy, steel-making slag as carbon dioxide storage material has great economic and environmental value. This paper summarized the main carbonation pathways and carbon capture mechanisms of industrial solid wastes. The carbonation processes of the most representative solid waste of steel-making slags were compared, the effects of different carbonation pathways on the carbonation capacity of steel-making slags were evaluated, and the characteristics of carbonation products obtained from different carbonation pathways were also compared. In addition, the industrial application status of carbon dioxide carbonation technology of steel-making slags was analyzed, and the main challenges it faces were summarized and prospected. We hope that this review can attract extensive attention of scholars and promote the further development of carbon dioxide storage technology by mineralization of steel-making slag.

Abstract:Accelerated carbonation can promote the application of steel slag in construction materials. This method can not only resolve the fatal volume expansion of steel slag, but also sequestrate CO 2 . The carbonation thermodynamics, carbonation degree, carbonation methods and influencing factors of steel slag were reviewed. The theoretical CO 2 uptake of steel slag is between 25% to 50%. However, the actual CO 2 uptake distribution curve obeys normal distribution with a median value of 15%, which affected by carbonation methods, different influencing factors such as curing temperature, CO 2 concentration and pressure, particle size of steel slag, liquid to solid ratio, and extraction agents. The improvement mechanism of accelerated carbonation on mechanical properties and stability of steel slag-based building materials was analyzed. Besides, different accelerated carbonated steel slag-based products with enhanced properties were summarized. Finally, some valuable suggestions concerning accelerated carbonation of steel slag were presented for further research and industrial application.

Improving the Carbonation of Steel Slags Through Concurrent Wet Milling

Abstract:Abstract This work studies mineral carbonation of steel slags with the aim to reduce the amount of slag that is landfilled. Besides permanently storing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), carbonating the slags can improve their quality for use in beneficial applications and reduces the leaching of harmful heavy metals. In order to intensify the mineral carbonation process, mechanical activation is used to improve both the carbonation kinetics and yield. The milling is performed in a planetary ball mill which allows for high-intensity grinding, resulting in a fast reduction of the particle size and quick amorphization and disturbance of the crystal structure, allowing high reaction rates to be achieved. The effects of the three main processing parameters of a planetary ball mill—bead-to-powder ratio $$R$$ R , bead size $$D$$ D and milling speed $$S$$ S —are investigated. Under optimal conditions, more than 50% of the maximum CO 2 uptake is achieved in only 6 min, representing a very significant improvement over regular slurry carbonation. Quantitative XRD allows to identify the reactivity of the different crystalline phases present in the slag under different milling conditions. With the help of a mass balance, the formation of an inert outer layer consisting of silica (SiO 2 ) is confirmed. This explains both the shell diffusion mechanism controlling the carbonation reaction and the total conversion being limited to 50–60%. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Heavy carbon industries produce solid side stream materials that contain inorganic chemicals like Ca, Na, or Mg, and other metals such as Fe or Al. These inorganic compounds usually react efficiently with CO2 to form stable carbonates. Therefore, using these side streams instead of virgin chemicals to capture CO2 is an appealing approach to reduce CO2 emissions. Herein, we performed an experimental study of the mineral carbonation potential of three industrial steel slags via aqueous, direct carbonation. To this end, we studied the absorption capacities, reaction yields, and physicochemical characteristics of the carbonated samples. The absorption capacities and the reaction yields were analyzed through experiments carried out in a reactor specifically designed to work without external stirring. As for the physicochemical characterization, we used solid-state Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using this reactor, the absorption capacities were between 5.8 and 35.3 g/L and reaction yields were in the range of 81-211 kg CO2/ton of slag. The physicochemical characterization of the solid products with solid FTIR, XRD and SEM indicated the presence of CaCO3. This suggests that there is potential to use the carbonated products in commercial applications.
