Abstract:The Directed Feedback Vertex Set problem (DFVS) asks whether it is possible to remove at most $k$ vertices from a directed graph to make it acyclic. Whether DFVS is fixed-parameter tractable was a long-standing open problem in parameterized complexity until it was solved by Chen et al. in 2008 (STOC 2008). Now the running-time bound of this problem is improved to $\mathcal O(k!4^kk^5(n+m))$ (Lokshtanov et al, SODA 2018), where $n$ and $m$ are the numbers of vertices and arcs in the graph. In this paper, we simplify one crucial step in all previous parameterized algorithms for DFVS, which is to solve the compression version of the problem, and refine the running-time bound for DFVS to $\mathcal O(k!2^{o(k)}(n+m))$.

Hitting Long Directed Cycles is Fixed-Parameter Tractable

Abstract:In the Directed Long Cycle Hitting Set} problem we are given a directed graph $G$, and the task is to find a set $S$ of at most $k$ vertices/arcs such that $G-S$ has no cycle of length longer than $\ell$. We show that the problem can be solved in time $2^{\mathcal O(\ell k^3\log k + k^5\log k\log\ell)}\cdot n^{\mathcal O(1)}$, that is, it is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) parameterized by $k$ and $\ell$. This algorithm can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of the fixed-parameter tractability of {\sc Mixed Graph Feedback Vertex Set} [Bonsma and Lokshtanov WADS 2011], which is already a common generalization of the fixed-parameter tractability of (undirected) {\sc Feedback Vertex Set} and the {\sc Directed Feedback Vertex Set} problems, two classic results in parameterized algorithms. The algorithm requires significant insights into the structure of graphs without directed cycles length longer than $\ell$ and can be seen as an exact version of the approximation algorithm following from the Erd{ő}s-P{ó}sa property for long cycles in directed graphs proved by Kreutzer and Kawarabayashi [STOC 2015].

Abstract:A graph is an r -pseudoforest if every connected component of it has a feedback edge set of size at most r . A graph is a d -quasi-forest if every connected component of it has a feedback vertex set of size at most d . The r - Pseudoforest Deletion problem ( d - Quasi-Forest Deletion problem) asks to delete a minimum number of vertices to get an r -pseudoforest (a d -quasi-forest, respectively). The well-studied feedback vertex set problem is the special case of r - Pseudoforest Deletion ( d - Quasi-Forest Deletion , respectively) in which r = 0 (d = 0, respectively). We provide an improved FPT algorithm and a smaller kernel for r -Pseudoforest Deletion when parameterized by the solution size (when r is fixed). For d - Quasi-Forest Deletion , we show that it is FPT as well when parameterized by d and the solution size.
Dynamic Parameterized Feedback Problems in Tournaments

Abstract:In this paper we present the first dynamic algorithms for the problem of Feedback Arc Set in Tournaments (FAST) and the problem of Feedback Vertex Set in Tournaments (FVST). Our algorithms maintain a dynamic tournament on n vertices altered by redirecting the arcs, and answer if the tournament admits a feedback arc set (or respectively feedback vertex set) of size at most K, for some chosen parameter K. For dynamic FAST we offer two algorithms. In the promise model, where we are guaranteed, that the size of the solution does not exceed g(K) for some computable function g, we give an $O(\sqrt{g(K)})$ update and $O(3^K K \sqrt{K})$ query algorithm. In the general setting without any promise, we offer an $O(\log^2 n)$ update and $O(3^K K \log^2 n)$ query time algorithm for dynamic FAST. For dynamic FVST we offer an algorithm working in the promise model, which admits $O(g^5(K))$ update and $O(3^K K^3 g(K))$ query time.

Abstract:A feedback vertex set in an undirected graph is a subset of vertices removal of which leaves a graph with no cycles. Razgon (in: Proceedings of the 10th Scandinavian workshop on algorithm theory (SWAT 2006), pp. 160–171, 2006) gave a $1.8899^n n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for finding a minimum feedback vertex set in an $n$-vertex undirected graph, which is the first exact algorithm for the problem that breaks the trivial barrier of $2^n$. Later, Fomin et al. (Algorithmica 52:293–307, 2008) improved the result to $1.7548^n n^{O(1)}$. In this paper, we further improve the result to $1.7266^n n^{O(1)}$. Our algorithm is analyzed by the measure-and-conquer method. We get the improvement by designing new reductions based on biconnectivity of instances and introducing a new measure scheme on the structure of reduced graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of parameterized algorithms running in subexponential time for two fundamental cycle-hitting problems: Feedback Vertex Set (FVS) and Triangle Hitting (TH). We focus on the class of pseudo-disk graphs, which forms a common generalization of several graph classes where such results exist, like disk graphs and square graphs. In these graphs, we show that TH can be solved in time $2^{O(k^{3/4}\log k)}n^{O(1)}$, and given a geometric representation FVS can be solved in time $2^{O(k^{6/7}\log k)}n^{O(1)}$.

Abstract:The minimum directed feedback vertex set problem consists in finding the minimum set of vertices that should be removed in order to make a directed graph acyclic. This is a well-known NP-hard optimization problem with applications in various fields, such as VLSI chip design, bioinformatics and transaction processing deadlock prevention and node-weighted network design. We show a constant factor approximation for the directed feedback vertex set problem in graphs of bounded genus.

Abstract:A {\em bipartite tournament} is a directed graph $T:=(A \cup B, E)$ such that every pair of vertices $(a,b), a\in A,b\in B$ are connected by an arc, and no arc connects two vertices of $A$ or two vertices of $B$. A {\em feedback vertex set} is a set $S$ of vertices in $T$ such that $T - S$ is acyclic. In this article we consider the {\sc Feedback Vertex Set} problem in bipartite tournaments. Here the input is a bipartite tournament $T$ on $n$ vertices together with an integer $k$, and the task is to determine whether $T$ has a feedback vertex set of size at most $k$. We give a new algorithm for {\sc Feedback Vertex Set in Bipartite Tournaments}. The running time of our algorithm is upper-bounded by $O(1.6181^k + n^{O(1)})$, improving over the previously best known algorithm with running time $2^kk^{O(1)} + n^{O(1)}$ [Hsiao, ISAAC 2011]. As a by-product, we also obtain the fastest currently known exact exponential-time algorithm for the problem, with running time $O(1.3820^n)$.

Abstract:The k -feedback arc set problem is to determine whether there is a set F of at most k arcs in a directed graph G such that the removal of F makes G acyclic. The k -feedback arc set problems in tournaments and bipartite tournaments ( k -FAST and k -FASBT) have applications in ranking aggregation and have been extensively studied from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. By introducing a new concept called “bimodule”, we provide a problem kernel with O ( k 2 ) vertices for k -FASBT, which improves the previous result by a factor of k .

Abstract:The Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem ( SFVS ) takes an n -vertex graph G = ( V , E ), a terminal set T ⊆ V, and an integer k as the input. The goal is to determine whether there exists a subset S ⊆ V of at most k vertices whose removal makes no terminal in T contained in a cycle in the remaining graph. When T = V, SFVS degenerates to the classical Feedback Vertex Set problem ( FVS ). Both SFVS and FVS have been extensively studied in parameterized algorithms. In this paper, we study parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set in Tournaments ( SFVST ), i.e., SFVS with the restriction that the input graph is always a tournament. By using the iterative compression method and a novel dynamic programming, we show that SFVST can be solved in 2 k + o ( k ) n O ( 1 ) time, improving the bound obtained from 3 -Hitting Set .

Abstract:An r-pseudoforest is a graph in which each component can be made into a forest by deleting at most r edges, and a d-quasi-forest is a graph in which each component can be made into a forest by deleting at most d vertices. In this paper, we study the parameterized tractability of deleting minimum number of vertices to obtain r-pseudoforest and d-quasi-forest, generalizing the well studied feedback vertex set problem. We first provide improved FPT algorithm and kernelization results for the r-pseudoforest deletion problem and then we show that the d-quasi-forest deletion problem is also FPT.

Abstract:In this work, we study the Biclique-Free Vertex Deletion problem: Given a graph $G$ and integers $k$ and $i \le j$, find a set of at most $k$ vertices that intersects every (not necessarily induced) biclique $K_{i, j}$ in $G$. This is a natural generalization of the Bounded-Degree Deletion problem, wherein one asks whether there is a set of at most $k$ vertices whose deletion results in a graph of a given maximum degree $r$. The two problems coincide when $i = 1$ and $j = r + 1$. We show that Biclique-Free Vertex Deletion is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to $k + d$ for the degeneracy $d$ by developing a $2^{O(d k^2)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm. We also show that it can be solved in $2^{O(f k)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ time for the feedback vertex number $f$ when $i \ge 2$. In contrast, we find that it is W[1]-hard for the treedepth for any integer $i \ge 1$. Finally, we show that Biclique-Free Vertex Deletion has a polynomial kernel for every $i \ge 1$ when parameterized by the feedback edge number. Previously, for this parameter, its fixed-parameter tractability for $i = 1$ was known (Betzler et al., 2012) but the existence of polynomial kernel was open.

Abstract:The firefighter problem is defined as below. A fire initially breaks out at a vertex r on a graph G. In each step, a firefighter chooses to protect one vertex, which is not yet burnt. And the fire spreads out to its unprotected neighboring vertices afterwards. The objective of the problem is to choose a sequence of vertices to protect, in order to save maximum number of vertices from the fire. In this paper, we will introduce a parameter k into the firefighter problem and give several FPT algorithms using a random separation technique of Cai, Chan and Chan. We will prove firefighter problem is FPT on general graph if we take total number of vertices burnt to be a parameter. If we parameterize the number of protected vertices, we discover several FPT algorithms of the firefighter problem on degree bounded graph and unicyclic graph. Furthermore, we also study the firefighter problem on weighted and valued graph, and the problem with multiple fire sources on degree-bounded graph.
Fast Dynamic Graph Algorithms for Parameterized Problems

Abstract:Fully dynamic graph is a data structure that (1) supports edge insertions and deletions and (2) answers problem specific queries. The time complexity of (1) and (2) are referred to as the update time and the query time respectively. There are many researches on dynamic graphs whose update time and query time are $o(|G|)$, that is, sublinear in the graph size. However, almost all such researches are for problems in P. In this paper, we investigate dynamic graphs for NP-hard problems exploiting the notion of fixed parameter tractability (FPT). We give dynamic graphs for Vertex Cover and Cluster Vertex Deletion parameterized by the solution size $k$. These dynamic graphs achieve almost the best possible update time $O(\mathrm{poly}(k)\log n)$ and the query time $O(f(\mathrm{poly}(k),k))$, where $f(n,k)$ is the time complexity of any static graph algorithm for the problems. We obtain these results by dynamically maintaining an approximate solution which can be used to construct a small problem kernel. Exploiting the dynamic graph for Cluster Vertex Deletion, as a corollary, we obtain a quasilinear-time (polynomial) kernelization algorithm for Cluster Vertex Deletion. Until now, only quadratic time kernelization algorithms are known for this problem. We also give a dynamic graph for Chromatic Number parameterized by the solution size of Cluster Vertex Deletion, and a dynamic graph for bounded-degree Feedback Vertex Set parameterized by the solution size. Assuming the parameter is a constant, each dynamic graph can be updated in $O(\log n)$ time and can compute a solution in $O(1)$ time. These results are obtained by another approach.

Abstract:We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of forbidden structures for tournaments to possess the min-max relation on packing and covering directed cycles, together with strongly polynomial time algorithms for the feedback vertex set problem and the cycle packing problem in this class of tournaments. Applying the local ratio technique of Bar-Yehuda and Even to the forbidden structures, we find a 2.5-approximation polynomial time algorithm for the feedback vertex set problem in any tournament.
Polyhedral Aspects of Feedback Vertex Set and Pseudoforest Deletion Set

Abstract:We consider the feedback vertex set problem in undirected graphs (FVS). The input to FVS is an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ with non-negative vertex costs. The goal is to find a minimum cost subset of vertices $S \subseteq V$ such that $G-S$ is acyclic. FVS is a well-known NP-hard problem and does not admit a $(2-\epsilon)$-approximation for any fixed $\epsilon > 0$ assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. There are combinatorial $2$-approximation algorithms and also primal-dual based $2$-approximations. Despite the existence of these algorithms for several decades, there is no known polynomial-time solvable LP relaxation for FVS with a provable integrality gap of at most $2$. More recent work (Chekuri and Madan, SODA '16) developed a polynomial-sized LP relaxation for a more general problem, namely Subset FVS, and showed that its integrality gap is at most $13$ for Subset FVS, and hence also for FVS. Motivated by this gap in our knowledge, we undertake a polyhedral study of FVS and related problems. In this work, we formulate new integer linear programs (ILPs) for FVS whose LP-relaxation can be solved in polynomial time, and whose integrality gap is at most $2$. The new insights in this process also enable us to prove that the formulation in (Chekuri and Madan, SODA '16) has an integrality gap of at most $2$ for FVS. Our results for FVS are inspired by new formulations and polyhedral results for the closely-related pseudoforest deletion set problem (PFDS). Our formulations for PFDS are in turn inspired by a connection to the densest subgraph problem. We also conjecture an extreme point property for a LP-relaxation for FVS, and give evidence for the conjecture via a corresponding result for PFDS.

Abstract:We show that any instance I of the Feedback Vertex Set problem in undirected planar graphs can be reduced to an equivalent instance I' such that (i) the size of the instance and the size of the minimum feedback vertex set do not increase, (ii) and the size of the minimum feedback vertex set in I' is at least 1/29 of the number of vertices in I'. This implies a 29k kernel for this problem with parameter k being the size of the feedback vertex set. Our result improves the previous results of 97k and 112k.

Abstract:We complement the recent algorithmic result that Feedback Vertex Set is XP-time solvable parameterized by the mim-width of a given branch decomposition of the input graph [3] by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard in this parameterization. The hardness holds even for linear mim-width, as well as for H-graphs, where the parameter is the number of edges in H. To obtain this result, we adapt a reduction due to Fomin, Golovach and Raymond [2], following the same line of reasoning but adding a new gadget.

Twin-Width Meets Feedback Edges and Vertex Integrity

Abstract:The approximate computation of twin-width has attracted significant attention already since the moment the parameter was introduced. A recently proposed approach (STACS 2024) towards obtaining a better understanding of this question is to consider the approximability of twin-width via fixed-parameter algorithms whose running time depends not on twin-width itself, but rather on parameters which impose stronger restrictions on the input graph. The first step that article made in this direction is to establish the fixed-parameter approximability of twin-width (with an additive error of 1) when the runtime parameter is the feedback edge number. Here, we make several new steps in this research direction and obtain: - An asymptotically tight bound between twin-width and the feedback edge number; - A significantly improved fixed-parameter approximation algorithm for twin-width under the same runtime parameter (i.e., the feedback edge number) which circumvents many of the technicalities of the original result and simultaneously avoids its formerly non-elementary runtime dependency; - An entirely new fixed-parameter approximation algorithm for twin-width when the runtime parameter is the vertex integrity of the graph.
