Abstract:A feedback vertex set in a graph is a subset of vertices, such that the complement of this subset induces a forest. Finding a minimum feedback vertex set (FVS) is $\cal{NP}$-complete on bipartite graphs, but tractable on chordal bipartite graphs. A bipartite graph is called tree convex, if a tree is defined on one part of the vertices, such that for every vertex in the other part, the neighborhood of this vertex induces a subtree. First, we show that chordal bipartite graphs form a proper subset of tree convex bipartite graphs. Second, we show that FVS is $\cal{NP}$-complete on the tree convex bipartite graphs where the sum of the degrees of vertices whose degree is at least three on the tree is unbounded. Combined with known tractability where this sum is bounded, we show a dichotomy of complexity of FVS on tree convex bipartite graphs.

Abstract:A feedback vertex set is a subset of vertices, such that the removal of this subset renders the remaining graph cycle-free. The weight of a feedback vertex set is the sum of weights of its vertices. Finding a minimum weighted feedback vertex set is tractable for convex bipartite graphs, but NP-complete even for unweighted bipartite graphs. In a circular convex (convex, respectively) bipartite graph, there is a circular (linear, respectively) ordering defined on one class of vertices, such that for every vertex in another class, the neighborhood of this vertex is a circular arc (an interval, respectively). The minimum weighted feedback vertex set problem is shown tractable for circular convex bipartite graphs in this paper, by making a Cook reduction (i.e. polynomial time Turing reduction) for this problem from circular convex bipartite graphs to convex bipartite graphs.

Abstract:We consider the feedback vertex set problem in undirected graphs (FVS). The input to FVS is an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ with non-negative vertex costs. The goal is to find a minimum cost subset of vertices $S \subseteq V$ such that $G-S$ is acyclic. FVS is a well-known NP-hard problem and does not admit a $(2-\epsilon)$-approximation for any fixed $\epsilon > 0$ assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. There are combinatorial $2$-approximation algorithms and also primal-dual based $2$-approximations. Despite the existence of these algorithms for several decades, there is no known polynomial-time solvable LP relaxation for FVS with a provable integrality gap of at most $2$. More recent work (Chekuri and Madan, SODA '16) developed a polynomial-sized LP relaxation for a more general problem, namely Subset FVS, and showed that its integrality gap is at most $13$ for Subset FVS, and hence also for FVS. Motivated by this gap in our knowledge, we undertake a polyhedral study of FVS and related problems. In this work, we formulate new integer linear programs (ILPs) for FVS whose LP-relaxation can be solved in polynomial time, and whose integrality gap is at most $2$. The new insights in this process also enable us to prove that the formulation in (Chekuri and Madan, SODA '16) has an integrality gap of at most $2$ for FVS. Our results for FVS are inspired by new formulations and polyhedral results for the closely-related pseudoforest deletion set problem (PFDS). Our formulations for PFDS are in turn inspired by a connection to the densest subgraph problem. We also conjecture an extreme point property for a LP-relaxation for FVS, and give evidence for the conjecture via a corresponding result for PFDS.

Abstract:In graph theory, the minimum directed feedback vertex set (FVS) problem consists in identifying the smallest subsets of vertices in a directed graph whose deletion renders the directed graph acyclic. Although being known as NP-hard since 1972, this problem can be solved in a reasonable time on small instances, or on instances having special combinatorial structure. In this paper we investigate graph reductions preserving all or some minimum FVS and focus on their properties, especially the Church-Rosser property, also called confluence. The Church-Rosser property implies the irrelevance of reduction order, leading to a unique directed graph. The study seeks the largest subset of reductions with the Church-Rosser property and explores the adaptability of reductions to meet this criterion. Addressing these questions is crucial, as it may impact algorithmic implications, allowing for parallelization and speeding up sequential algorithms.

Abstract:The k -feedback arc set problem is to determine whether there is a set F of at most k arcs in a directed graph G such that the removal of F makes G acyclic. The k -feedback arc set problems in tournaments and bipartite tournaments ( k -FAST and k -FASBT) have applications in ranking aggregation and have been extensively studied from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity. By introducing a new concept called “bimodule”, we provide a problem kernel with O ( k 2 ) vertices for k -FASBT, which improves the previous result by a factor of k .

Abstract:An r-pseudoforest is a graph in which each component can be made into a forest by deleting at most r edges, and a d-quasi-forest is a graph in which each component can be made into a forest by deleting at most d vertices. In this paper, we study the parameterized tractability of deleting minimum number of vertices to obtain r-pseudoforest and d-quasi-forest, generalizing the well studied feedback vertex set problem. We first provide improved FPT algorithm and kernelization results for the r-pseudoforest deletion problem and then we show that the d-quasi-forest deletion problem is also FPT.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the existence of parameterized algorithms running in subexponential time for two fundamental cycle-hitting problems: Feedback Vertex Set (FVS) and Triangle Hitting (TH). We focus on the class of pseudo-disk graphs, which forms a common generalization of several graph classes where such results exist, like disk graphs and square graphs. In these graphs, we show that TH can be solved in time $2^{O(k^{3/4}\log k)}n^{O(1)}$, and given a geometric representation FVS can be solved in time $2^{O(k^{6/7}\log k)}n^{O(1)}$.

Abstract:A feedback vertex set in an undirected graph is a subset of vertices removal of which leaves a graph with no cycles. Razgon (in: Proceedings of the 10th Scandinavian workshop on algorithm theory (SWAT 2006), pp. 160–171, 2006) gave a $1.8899^n n^{O(1)}$-time algorithm for finding a minimum feedback vertex set in an $n$-vertex undirected graph, which is the first exact algorithm for the problem that breaks the trivial barrier of $2^n$. Later, Fomin et al. (Algorithmica 52:293–307, 2008) improved the result to $1.7548^n n^{O(1)}$. In this paper, we further improve the result to $1.7266^n n^{O(1)}$. Our algorithm is analyzed by the measure-and-conquer method. We get the improvement by designing new reductions based on biconnectivity of instances and introducing a new measure scheme on the structure of reduced graphs.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) with a subset S⊆E of edges, the edge subset feedback edge set problem is to find a smallest set F of edges such that in G′=(V,E−F) no cycle contains an edge in S. We also define a restricted version of this problem, in which no edge in S is allowed to be selected into F to form a solution. In this paper, we give a linear-time algorithm for the edge subset feedback edge set problem, and show that the restricted version is NP-hard for fixed |S|⩾2 and fixed-parameter tractable with parameter being k=|F|.

Abstract:The Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem ( SFVS ) takes an n -vertex graph G = ( V , E ), a terminal set T ⊆ V, and an integer k as the input. The goal is to determine whether there exists a subset S ⊆ V of at most k vertices whose removal makes no terminal in T contained in a cycle in the remaining graph. When T = V, SFVS degenerates to the classical Feedback Vertex Set problem ( FVS ). Both SFVS and FVS have been extensively studied in parameterized algorithms. In this paper, we study parameterized algorithms for Subset Feedback Vertex Set in Tournaments ( SFVST ), i.e., SFVS with the restriction that the input graph is always a tournament. By using the iterative compression method and a novel dynamic programming, we show that SFVST can be solved in 2 k + o ( k ) n O ( 1 ) time, improving the bound obtained from 3 -Hitting Set .

Abstract:A graph is an r -pseudoforest if every connected component of it has a feedback edge set of size at most r . A graph is a d -quasi-forest if every connected component of it has a feedback vertex set of size at most d . The r - Pseudoforest Deletion problem ( d - Quasi-Forest Deletion problem) asks to delete a minimum number of vertices to get an r -pseudoforest (a d -quasi-forest, respectively). The well-studied feedback vertex set problem is the special case of r - Pseudoforest Deletion ( d - Quasi-Forest Deletion , respectively) in which r = 0 (d = 0, respectively). We provide an improved FPT algorithm and a smaller kernel for r -Pseudoforest Deletion when parameterized by the solution size (when r is fixed). For d - Quasi-Forest Deletion , we show that it is FPT as well when parameterized by d and the solution size.

Abstract:Bipartite graphs model the relationship between two disjoint sets of objects. They have a wide range of applications and are often visualized as a 2-layered drawing, where each set of objects is visualized as a set of vertices (points) on one of the two parallel horizontal lines and the relationships are represented by edges (simple curves) between the two lines connecting the corresponding vertices. One of the common objectives in such drawings is to minimize the number of crossings this, however, is computationally expensive and may still result in drawings with so many crossings that they affect the readability of the drawing. We consider a recent approach to remove crossings in such visualizations by splitting vertices, where the goal is to find the minimum number of vertices to be split to obtain a planar drawing. We show that determining whether a planar drawing exists after splitting at most $k$ vertices is fixed parameter tractable in $k$.

Abstract:A connected feedback vertex set of a graph is a connected subgraph of the graph whose removal makes the graph cycle free. In this paper, we provide an approximation algorithm for connected feedback vertex set in AT-free graphs. Given an -approximate solution for feedback vertex set on 2-connected AT-free graph, our algorithm produces a solution of size for connected feedback vertex set on the same graph. The complexity of our algorithm is , where the time required to obtain the -approximate solution is O ( f ( n )). Our result leads to the following two observations. The optimal feedback vertex set algorithm for AT-free graphs combined with our result provides an algorithm which produces a solution of size with running time for 2-connected AT-free graphs. The 2-approximation algorithm for feedback vertex set in general graphs along with our result provides an algorithm which produces a solution of size with running time . Using the same method we also obtain a -approximation for this problem on general AT-free graphs. We note that, the complexity status of this problem is not known.

Abstract:In the Feedback Vertex Set problem, we aim to find a small set S of vertices in a graph intersecting every cycle. The Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem requires S to intersect only those cycles that include a vertex of some specified set T . We also consider the Weighted Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem, where each vertex u has weight w(u)>0 and we ask that S has small weight. By combining known NP -hardness results with new polynomial-time results we prove full complexity dichotomies for Subset Feedback Vertex Set and Weighted Subset Feedback Vertex Set for H -free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain a graph H as an induced subgraph.

Abstract:Convex bipartite graphs are a subclass of circular convex bipartite graphs and chordal bipartite graphs. Chordal bipartite graphs are a subclass of perfect elimination bipartite graphs and tree convex bipartite graphs. No other inclusion among them is known. In this paper, we make a thorough comparison on them by showing the nonemptyness of each region in their Venn diagram. Thus no further inclusion among them is possible, and the known complexity results on them are incomparable. We also show the NP-completeness of treewidth and feedback vertex set for perfect elimination bipartite graphs.

Abstract:The Feedback Vertex Set problem is undoubtedly one of the most well-studied problems in Parameterized Complexity. In this problem, given an undirected graph G and a non-negative integer k , the objective is to test whether there exists a subset of size at most k such that is a forest. After a long line of improvement, recently, Li and Nederlof [TALG, 2022] designed a randomized algorithm for the problem running in time . In the Parameterized Complexity literature, several problems around Feedback Vertex Set have been studied. Some of these include Independent Feedback Vertex Set (where the set S should be an independent set in G ), Almost Forest Deletion and Pseudoforest Deletion . In Pseudoforest Deletion , each connected component in has at most one cycle in it. However, in Almost Forest Deletion , the input is a graph G and non-negative integers , and the objective is to test whether there exists a vertex subset S of size at most k , such that is edges away from a forest. In this paper, using the methodology of Li and Nederlof [TALG, 2022], we obtain the current fastest algorithms for all these problems. In particular we obtain the following randomized algorithms.

Abstract:For any finite set $\mathcal{H} = \{H_1,\ldots,H_p\}$ of graphs, a graph is $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free if it does not contain any of $H_1,\ldots,H_p$ as a subgraph. In recent work, meta-classifications have been studied: these show that if graph problems satisfy certain prescribed conditions, their complexity is determined on classes of $\mathcal{H}$-subgraph-free graphs. We continue this work and focus on problems that have polynomial-time solutions on classes that have bounded treewidth or maximum degree at most~$3$ and examine their complexity on $H$-subgraph-free graph classes where $H$ is a connected graph. With this approach, we obtain comprehensive classifications for (Independent) Feedback Vertex Set, Connected Vertex Cover, Colouring and Matching Cut. This resolves a number of open problems. We highlight that, to establish that Independent Feedback Vertex Set belongs to this collection of problems, we first show that it can be solved in polynomial time on graphs of maximum degree $3$. We demonstrate that, with the exception of the complete graph on four vertices, each graph in this class has a minimum size feedback vertex set that is also an independent set.
