Abstract:Biomass carbon materials with high theoretical specific capacity, low cost and pollution-free, play an essential role in secondary batteries as anode materials or modified substrates. This review classifies biomass based on its resource and composition and introduces the application of biomass raw fibers, biomass extracts, biomass synthetic fibers, and other materials in lithium-sulfur, potassium-ion, sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries. It provides a systematic review of the processing methods of different forms of biomass materials. Additionally, the perspectives are also proposed for next-generation biomass carbon materials-based ion batteries.

Biomass materials prepared by various methods have been used as electrodes in secondary batteries. In this review, we discuss the application scope of different types of biomass and biomass‐derived materials in zinc‐air, lithium‐ion, and lithium‐sulfur batteries. The application of biomass and biomass‐derived materials in batteries is gaining increasing attention and is expected to drive many exciting innovations in the field of sustainable energy storage technologies. Abstract:The environmental impact from the waste disposal has been widely concerned around the world. The conversion of wastes to useful resources is important for the sustainable society. As a typical family of wastes, biomass materials basically composed of collagen, protein and lignin, are considered as useful resources for recycle and reuse. In recent years, the development of carbon material derived from biomasses, such as plants, crops, animals and their application in electrochemical energy storage have attracted extensive attention. Through the selection of the appropriate biomass, the optimization of the activation method and the control of the pyrolysis temperatures, carbon materials with desired features, such as high‐specific surface area, variable porous framework, and controllable heteroatom‐doping have been fabricated. Herein, this review summarized the preparation methods, morphologies, heteroatoms doping in the plant/animal‐derived carbonaceous materials, and their application as electrode materials for secondary batteries and supercapacitors, and as electrode support for lithium‐sulfur batteries. The challenges and prospects for the controllable synthesis and large‐scale application of biomass‐derived carbonaceous materials have also been outlooked.

Abstract:This review comprehensively summarizes the internal structure of biomass‐derived carbon materials, which aims to provide suitable environment‐friendly and low consumption green materials for high‐performance batteries design.Owing to the sustainability, environmental friendliness, and structural diversity of biomass‐derived materials, extensive efforts have been devoted to use them as energy storage materials in high‐energy rechargeable batteries. A timely and comprehensive review from the structures to mechanisms will significantly widen this research field. Here, it starts with the operation mechanism of batteries, and it aims to summarize the latest advances for biomass‐derived carbon to achieve high‐energy battery materials, including activation carbon methods and the structural classification of biomass‐derived carbon materials from zero dimension, one dimension, two dimension, and three dimension. Each strategy starts with carefully selected examples and then moves to illustrate the underlying transport mechanism of electrons in the structure. In the end, challenges, strategies, and outlooks are pointed out for the future development of biomass‐derived carbon materials. Overall, this review will help researchers choose appropriate strategies to design biomass‐derived carbon materials, thereby promoting the application of biomass materials in battery design.

Abstract:The storage and utilization of energy is one of the important topics in the development of science and technology, especially regarding secondary batteries, which are efficient electrical-/chemical-energy-converting devices. This review systematically introduces the important research progress made in the context of secondary batteries, starting from their development and leading to the introduction of related basic theoretical knowledge. The current research on secondary batteries that are based on different systems and related key materials is discussed in detail, and includes lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries, magnesium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, calcium-ion batteries, aluminum-ion batteries, fluorine-ion batteries, chloride-ion batteries, dual-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur (Se) batteries, sodium-sulfur (Se) batteries, potassium-sulfur (Se) batteries, polyvalent metal-sulfur-based batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries, sodium-oxygen batteries, potassium-oxygen batteries, aqueous metal-ion batteries, polyvalent metal-oxygen batteries, lithium-bromine (or lithium-iodine) batteries, photo-assisted batteries, flexible batteries, organic batteries, and metal-carbon dioxide batteries. Additionally, the common characterization techniques for electrode reaction processes in battery research are also introduced, including cryo-electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation, in situ spectroscopic techniques, and magnetic characterization. This paper will help researchers to systematically understand secondary battery technology and provide good guidance for future research on secondary batteries.

Abstract:AbstractBiomass materials are of great interest in high‐energy rechargeable batteries due to their appealing merits of sustainability, environmental benefits, and more importantly, structural/compositional versatilities, abundant functional groups and many other unique physicochemical properties. In this perspective, we provide both overview and prospect on the contributions of biomass‐derived ecomaterials to battery component engineering including binders, separators, polymer electrolytes, electrode hosts, and functional interlayers, and so forth toward high‐stable lithium–ion batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, lithium–oxygen batteries, and solid state lithium metal batteries. Furthermore, based on the multifunctionalities of bio‐based materials, the design protocols for battery components with desired properties are highlighted. This perspective affords fresh inspiration on the rational designs of biomass‐based materials for advanced lithium‐based batteries, as well as the sustainable development of advanced energy storage devices.image

Abstract:This review discusses important scientific progress, problems, and prospects of lignin-based materials in the field of rechargeable batteries. Lignin, a component of the secondary cell wall, is considered a promising source of biomass. Compared to cellulose, which is the most extensively studied biomass material, lignin has a competitive price and a variety of functional groups leading to broad utilization such as adhesive, emulsifier, pesticides, polymer composite, carbon precursor, etc. The lignin-based materials can also be applied to various components in rechargeable batteries such as the binder, separator, electrolyte, anode, and cathode. This review describes how lignin-based materials are adopted in these five components with specific examples and explains why lignin is attractive in each case. The electrochemical behaviors including charge–discharge profiles, cyclability, and rate performance are discussed between lignin-based materials and materials without lignin. Finally, current limitations and future prospects are categorized to provide design guidelines for advanced lignin-based materials.

Abstract:Natural biomass-derived carbons have attracted great attention due to their interesting characteristics of naturally porous or hierarchical structured and heteroatom doping. In this review, the recent progress in the synthesis of naturally-derived carbon and their composite electrodes is summarized in detail. Advantages and disadvantages of different methods (e.g., chemical and physical activations) are discussed. In addition, we further address the pore formation mechanism on biomass-derived carbons. Furthermore, their applications for electrochemical energy storage in lithium ion batteries and sodium ion batteries are briefly reviewed and highlighted associated with their structural merits such as hierarchical porous structure, high conductivity as well as large surface area. Abstract:Biomass-derived materials generally exhibit uniform and highly-stable hierarchical porous structures that can hardly be achieved by conventional chemical synthesis and artificial design. When used as electrodes for rechargeable batteries, these structural and compositional advantages often endow the batteries with superior electrochemical performances. This review systematically introduces the innate merits of biomass-derived materials and their applications as the electrode for advanced rechargeable batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries, and metal-sulfur batteries. In addition, biomass-derived materials as catalyst supports for metal-air batteries, fuel cells, and redox-flow batteries are also included. The major challenges for specific batteries and the strategies for utilizing biomass-derived materials are detailly introduced. Finally, the future development of biomass-derived materials for advanced rechargeable batteries is prospected. Abstract:<p>Electrochemical energy devices including batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells are reliable and practical technologies in which carbon-based electrode materials play critical roles in enhancing performance. Because of this, the source and synthesis of these carbon-based materials have been extensively explored and developed. And of the various carbon-based materials, biomass-derived carbon materials and corresponding composites have been recognized to be capable of delivering high capacities, enhanced rate performances and prolonged cycling stabilities in both lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors as partially induced through a combination of favorable pore structures and heteroatom-doping. In addition, biomass-derived carbon materials can provide significantly enhanced activity and stability for cathode oxygen reduction reactions if used as catalyst support materials in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Based on this, this review will provide a comprehensive assessment as well as critical analysis and systematic comparison of biomass-derived carbon materials and corresponding composites as electrode materials in various electrochemical energy devices based on recent progresses in research and development. In addition, related technical challenges are analyzed and possible research directions are proposed to further development for practical application.</p>

Abstract:Batteries are the backbones of the sustainable energy transition for stationary off-grid, portable electronic devices, and plug-in electric vehicle applications. Both lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), most commonly rely on carbon-based anode materials and are usually derived from non-renewable sources such as fossil deposits. Biomass-derived carbon materials are extensively researched as efficient and sustainable anode candidates for LIBs and NIBs. The main purpose of this perspective is to brief the use of biomass residues for the preparation of carbon anodes for LIBs and NIBs annexed to the biomass-derived carbon physicochemical structures and their aligned electrochemical properties. In addition, an outlook and some challenges faced in this promising area of research is presented. This review enlightens the readers with valuable insights and a reasonable understanding of issues and challenges faced in the preparation, physicochemical properties, and application of biomass-derived carbon materials as anode candidates for LIBs and NIBs.

Abstract:Lignin, with its carbon content of up to 60%, can be an ideal precursor for the preparation of carbon materials. Carbonaceous materials obtained from lignin can be transformed into porous and structural morphologies at different scales, providing a biomass approach to energy conversion and storage in batteries. Focusing on lignin-derived carbon materials, this paper summarizes the different morphologies and structures of lignin-based carbon obtained through different preparation methods, and the different electrochemical properties exhibited by these materials as electrode materials for rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulphur batteries, etc.). In addition, the development prospects and challenges of lignin-based carbon materials in the field of rechargeable batteries are summarized, providing ideas for the next step in the design and development of high-performance lignin-based carbon-based electrode materials.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Biomass in nature has diverse microstructures and abundant chemical compositions. There has been a surge of interest in biomass-derived carbon materials due to their adjustable physical and chemical properties, strong chemisorption, environmental friendliness, and low cost. In recent years, research on biomass-derived carbon in energy storage devices, especially lithium batteries, has emerged endlessly. This paper introduces the application of different types of biomass in the host and separator of lithium-sulfur batteries. These biomass carbons have their characteristics in structure, composition, and design. In-depth discussion of the actual impact of these characteristics on battery performance. According to the actual industrial application conditions, the practical problems faced by lithium-sulfur batteries are emphasized, and the future application prospects of bio-derived carbon materials are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Carbon aerogels first proposed in 1989 have attracted great attention in the area of secondary batteries due to their hierarchical porous nanonetworks, adjustable surface area, good conductivity and excellent electrochemical stability. Carbon aerogels can not only serve as electroactive materials for secondary batteries, but also can serve as carbon matrices to disperse electroactive materials or to confine electroactive materials. According to the type of carbon precursors employed in the area of secondary batteries, carbon aerogels can be divided into four kinds, that is phenolic resin derived carbon aerogels, carbon nanotube aerogels, graphene aerogels and biomass derived carbon aerogels. In this review, we first provide a brief review on the synthesis of these carbon aerogels in sequence. The preparation of phenolic resin derived carbon aerogels usually involves five steps: (1) sol formation; (2) gelation; (3) solvent exchange; (4) drying; (5) carbonization. For the successful preparation of carbon nanotube aerogels, surfactant assistance or surface functionalization is necessary. Resorcinol-formaldehyde derived carbons, carbon nanotubes, biopolymers were usually employed as crosslinkers to enhance physical and chemical properties of graphene aerogels. Natural biomass could be converted into carbon aerogel by a hydrothermal treatment, freeze-drying and post-pyrolysis process. Next, we summarize the recent progress and advances on carbon aerogels and carbon aerogel based materials for secondary batteries, focusing on lithium ion batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries. For lithium ion batteries, most of researches concentrated on carbon aerogel based nanocomposites as anode materials. For lithium-sulfur batteries, carbon aerogels, heteroatoms doped carbon aerogels and carbon aerogel based nanocomposites were used as hosts for immobilization of sulfur species and as interlayers to further block the penetration of lithium polysulfides.

Abstract:This review explores recent advancements in using biomass-derived materials for alkali metal-sulfur and selenium batteries, which are rapidly evolving in the field of high-energy–density storage systems. At the core of our discussion is the utilization of biomass-derived carbon (BDCs), emphasizing its vital role in enhancing the performance of these batteries. We examine the applications of carbon derived from biomass as hosts, extending our exploration beyond lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries to include a broader range of alkali metal combinations with sulfur and selenium. We emphasize the rational design and strategic use of biomass-derived materials in addressing challenges such as polysulfide and polyselenide dissolution and slow redox kinetics. The review highlights how these carbon materials contribute to high energy density and long cycling lifespans in sulfur and selenium-based batteries, enhancing stability and efficiency. Concluding with a forward-looking perspective, it identifies the ongoing need for innovation in biomass-derived carbon applications to advance alkali metal-sulfur and selenium batteries' capabilities.

Abstract:Because climate change, environmental pollution and other issues have gradually become the greatest threat to human existence, developing advanced technologies to solve these problems is of vital importance. Electrochemical energy storage devices play an important role in conveniently and efficiently using new energy instead of fossil energy. It is worth noting that biomass is a renewable source of carbon with many advantages, including extensive sources, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials have become significant candidates for electrode materials due to their unique lamellar structure and excellent electrical conductivity. Therefore, the development of 2D carbon materials derived from biomass is a valuable research topic. In particular, biomass-derived 2D carbon materials, a group of promising electrode materials for high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices, have attracted extensive attention because of their high specific surface area, high porosity, and abundant active sites. This review first introduces key synthetic strategies used for developing 2D carbon materials from biomass. Then, applications of biomass-derived 2D carbon materials in a series of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, including lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, sodium/potassium-ion batteries, metal-air batteries, and supercapacitors, are summarized. Meanwhile, various impact factors for their electrochemical performances, such as the biomass source, preparation process and potential development strategies, are noted. Finally, the opportunities and future challenges are discussed.

Abstract:Biomass-derived carbon possesses high stability, good conductivity, significant cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. It is frequently combined with non‐carbon-based materials to form composite materials, such as metals/alloys, metal oxides/sulfides/phosphides/selenides, showcasing outstanding electrochemical performance across diverse energy storage systems. However, significant variations exist in the properties of different non‐carbon-based materials, and further research is needed to elucidate their interaction with derived carbon. From the perspective of biomass-derived carbon, this review comprehensive analyzes the characteristic differences of precursors derived from natural renewable biomass sources, elucidates the evolution laws of microstructure, and evaluates the correlation between the synthesis techniques, action mechanisms, and electrochemical performance of composite materials in alkali metal-ion batteries, lithium‐sulfur batteries and supercapacitors. Finally, the key technological bottlenecks faced by composite materials are summarized, and the viable solutions are proposed.
