Abstract:In response to the escalating threats posed by climate change and the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, the pursuit of renewable energy sources and efficient energy storage technologies has become imperative. This review article focuses on the innovative application of biomass-derived carbon within the realm of supercapacitors, shedding light on the challenges, progress, and prospects in this burgeoning field. Biomass, being both sustainable and abundant, presents a promising pathway for the generation of carbon-based materials due to its inherent renewability and carbon neutrality. The utilization of biomass-derived carbon as electrode materials in supercapacitors underscores a critical advancement towards high-performance, eco-friendly, and cost-effective energy storage solutions. We delve into the diverse microstructures of carbon derived from various biomass sources, the methodologies of carbonization and activation, and the consequential effects of doping with different elements to enhance performance. Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and batteries, have been proven to be the most effective energy conversion and storage technologies for practical application. However, further development of these energy storage devices is hindered by their poor electrode performance. Carbon materials used in supercapacitors and batteries are often derived from nonrenewable resources under harsh environments. Naturally abundant biomass is a green, alternative carbon source with many desired properties. This review article presents state of the art of renewable carbon materials derived from natural biomasses with an emphasis on their applications in supercapacitors and lithium–sulfur batteries.

Abstract:The ever-increasing energy demand and fossil energy consumption accompanied by the worsening environmental pollution urge the invention and development of new, environmentally friendly and renewable high-performance energy devices. Among them, the supercapacitor has received massive attention, and the various electrode materials and polymer electrolytes have been exploited. The carbon-based electrodes and electrolytes derived from biomass are highly trusted as idea candidates for supercapacitors due to their attractive structure, abundance, low cost, renewability, and environmentally friendliness. This review will highlight the available characteristics of materials, synthetic strategies, and improvement approach of biomass-derived electrodes and electrolytes for application in supercapacitors. Future relative research trends also will be briefly discussed.

Abstract:The carbon material based biomass in energy storage has attracted much interest due to their environmental friendly, natural abundance and special porous structures. In this paper, the relationship between the species of biomass-based electrode and properties of supercapacitors are systematically discussed. On the one hand, the influence of the specific morphologies, heteroatom-introducing and graphitization degree of active carbon on the electrochemical properties are analyzed in detail, which give a promising direction for biomass-based carbon in clean energy field. On the other hand, machine learning, especially artificial neural network model, has been widely used as data mining technology to predict the electrochemical properties of electrode materials. It makes the structure-performance relationship for biomass-based supercapacitors more specifically. Current development in synthesis of active carbon from biomass combined with theoretical prediction is summarized, which provides a meaningful guidance into the application of energy storage supercapacitors. Current challenges and new trends on the biomass-based carbon materials in supercapacitors have also been proposed.

Abstract:The development of new energy storage technology has played a crucial role in advancing the green and low-carbon energy revolution. This has led to significant progress, spanning from fundamental research to its practical application in industry over the past decade. Nevertheless, the constrained performance of crucial materials poses a significant challenge, as current electrochemical energy storage systems may struggle to meet the growing market demand. In recent years, carbon derived from biomass has garnered significant attention because of its customizable physicochemical properties, environmentally friendly nature, and considerable economic value. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the production-application chain for biomass-derived carbon. It provides a comprehensive analysis of morphology design, structural regulation, and heteroatom-doping modification, and explores the operational mechanisms in different energy storage devices. Moreover, considering recent research progress, the potential uses of biomass-derived carbon biomass-derived carbon in alkali metal-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and supercapacitors are thoroughly assessed, offering a broader outlook on the emerging energy sector. Finally, based on the technical challenges that need to be addressed, potential research directions and development objectives are suggested for achieving large-scale production of biomass-derived carbon in the field of energy storage.

Abstract:Carbon materials with large specific surface areas, high durability, and unique internal structure have made them as a research hotspot in energy storage. Biomass, the only renewable carbon source, is abundant, cost effective and high in carbon content, which have been familiarly used in the production of high-performance carbon materials on an industrial scale. Many studies have shown that biomass-derived carbon materials (bio-carbons) have received increasing attention for their greater ability in mitigating environmental problems and promoting sustainable energy storage applications. The present review has overviewed the current progress in the application of bio-carbons as electrodes for supercapacitors. Biomass source and preparation process of bio-carbons were significantly expounded. The influence of heteroatom doping, specific surface area, and pore structure on bio-carbons' electrochemical properties (e.g., specific capacitance, cycle life) have been discussed. Finally, the promising future developments, needed directions and present challenges of bio-carbons in the field of supercapacitors are summarized, providing helpful inspiration for the future development and for efficient utilization of bio-carbons.

Abstract:The synthesis and application of biomass-derived carbon in energy storage have drawn increasing research attention due to the ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of the meso/microporous carbon produced from various biological precursors, including plants, fruits, microorganisms, and animals. Compared to the artificial nanostructured carbons, such as fullerene, carbon nanotube and graphene, the biomass-derived carbons may obtain superior capacitance, rate performance and stability in supercapacitor applications ascribing to their intrinsic nanoporous and hierarchical structures. However, challenges remain in processing techniques to obtain biomass-derived carbons with high carbon yield, high energy density, and controllable graphitic microstructures, which may require a clear understanding over the chemical and elemental compositions, and the intrinsic microstructural characteristics of the biological precursors. Herein we present comprehensive analyses over the impacts of the chemical and elemental compositions of the precursors on the carbon yield of the biomass, as well as the mechanism of chemical activation on the nanoporous structure development of the biomass-derived carbons. The structure–property relationship and functional performance of various biomass-derived carbons for supercapacitor applications are also discussed in detail and compared. Finally, useful insights are also provided for the improvements of biomass-derived carbons in supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are electrochemical energy storage systems that depend on high-surface-area electrodes and can play a dominant role in areas that require high power delivery or uptake. And of various electrodes, biomass-derived carbonaceous electrodes have recently shown impressive promise in high-performance supercapacitors because of their widespread availability, renewable nature and low-cost electricity storage. Based on this, this review will discuss the current status of biomass-derived carbon materials in supercapacitors and highlight current research with a specific emphasis on the influences of structure and elemental doping on the electrochemical performance of corresponding carbon electrodes. This review will also discuss the gap between laboratory achievements and practical utilization in terms of these biomass-derived carbon materials and outline practical strategies for future improvement.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Currently, carbon materials, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, porous carbon, have been successfully applied in energy storage area by taking advantage of their structural and functional diversity. However, the development of advanced science and technology has spurred demands for green and sustainable energy storage materials. Biomass-derived carbon, as a type of electrode materials, has attracted much attention because of its structural diversities, adjustable physical/chemical properties, environmental friendliness and considerable economic value. Because the nature contributes the biomass with bizarre microstructures, the biomass-derived carbon materials also show naturally structural diversities, such as 0D spherical, 1D fibrous, 2D lamellar and 3D spatial structures. In this review, the structure design of biomass-derived carbon materials for energy storage is presented. The effects of structural diversity, porosity and surface heteroatom doping of biomass-derived carbon materials in supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries are discussed in detail. In addition, the new trends and challenges in biomass-derived carbon materials have also been proposed for further rational design of biomass-derived carbon materials for energy storage.

Abstract:Due to its low cost, diverse sources, and sustainable benefits, biomass-derived activated carbon has gotten much attention recently. An overview of the activation methods and mechanisms used in various biomass activated carbons is presented in this article, as well as a review of the recent progress made in the application of biomass activated carbons in electrochemical supercapacitors during the past three years. The mechanisms and impacts of various activation treatment procedures on the apparent morphology and pore structure of activated carbon materials are briefly discussed. In addition, this article also summarizes the effects of different factors on the performance of supercapacitors, including the texture structure and pore size distribution, the chemical property of heteroatoms doping, the degree of graphitization, and different types of electrolytes and activated carbon-based composites electrodes. The current state of research on biomass activated carbon in the field of the supercapacitor, as well as the future development prospects and challenges in promoting the application of biomass activated carbons in a wide range of fields, were summarized, and useful enlightenment for further development and exploitation of biomass was provided.

Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been significant effort dedicated to both fundamental research and practical applications of biomass-derived materials, including electrocatalytic energy conversion and various functional energy storage devices. Beyond their sustainability, eco-friendliness, structural diversity, and biodegradability, biomass-derived materials provide additional benefits, including naturally organized hierarchical structures, rich surface properties, and an abundance of heteroatoms. These characteristics make them appealing candidates for effective energy storage and electrocatalytic energy conversion applications. This review explores the recent advancements in biomass-derived materials for energy storage system (ESS), including supercapacitors and electrocatalytic reactions. We also address the scientific and technical hurdles associated with these materials and outline potential avenues for future research on biomass-based energy conversion applications. By emphasizing the significance of controllable structural designs and modifications, we highlight their crucial roles in advancing this field.

Therefore, it is of importance to summarize the advanced technologies and strategies for optimizing biomass-derived carbon materials for supercapacitors, which will effectively promote the further development of high-performance supercapacitors. In this review, the recent research progress of biomass-derived carbon materials is provided in detail, including the selection of biomass precursors, the design of carbon nano-dimension and the theory of heteroatom doping. Besides, the preparation methods of biomass-derived carbon materials and the related processes of optimizing the electrochemical performance are also summarized. Abstract:Abstract In order to fulfil the requirements of various equipment in different fields for energy storage components, there is an increasing number of studies being conducted on the development of electrode materials for supercapacitors. At present, carbon materials used in electrode components in supercapacitors are mostly graphene, porous carbon, activated carbon, and carbon nanotubes. Due to the fast advancements in modern technology and science, which have stimulated the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly energy storage materials, biomass-derived carbon materials have gradually emerged in the public eye. The carbon source of biomass-derived carbon is usually a natural substance, which has advantages such as low cost, easy availability, and environmental friendliness. Due to the diversity of material structures, the required electrode materials can be designed and prepared according to performance requirements. At the same time, biomass-derived carbon is also capable of being combined alongside various electrode materials to create asymmetric capacitors, combining the advantages of the two to enhance capacitor electrochemical performance. This article first introduces different sources of biomass-derived carbon-based electrode materials and compares their electrochemical performance. Then, based on various research results, the factors that affect their electrochemical performance are discussed in detail. Then, the preparation methods of biomass-derived carbon electrode materials are introduced, and the specific requirements, advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods are briefly analyzed. The application of biomass-derived carbon electrode materials in supercapacitors in combination with other materials is listed. Finally, a summary and outlook of the current research status are provided to provide a reference for the rational design of biomass carbon supercapacitors in the future.

Abstract:In the past decades, fossil energy depletion, environmental pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions have resulted in serious health threats and ecological imbalances, which prompt researchers to explore green and sustainable supercapacitor energy storage and conversion systems. Biomass is a promising renewable energy source to use for biomass porous carbon for supercapacitor devices because it is renewable and has abundant reserves, a low price, and low pollution carbon energy. To date, although some reports have screened different biomass precursors, carbonization methods, and activation strategies and mechanisms, a comprehensive evaluation and critical review of the correlation among biomass porous carbon properties, including pore structure and surface chemistry, and electrochemical energy storage performances of supercapacitors are absent from a multidisciplinary assessment perspective. Therefore, in this review, we summarize recent advances in the biomass porous carbon synthesis process focusing on different carbonization and activation strategies, point out the scope of applicability and advantages/disadvantages of these methods in supercapacitor applications, and reveal the reaction mechanisms and limitations for commercial production. Then, the relationships among biomass porous carbon properties, including hierarchical porous structure, surface chemistry, specific surface area, and electrochemical performances of supercapacitors are reviewed in detail, which enables researchers to prepare and design advanced materials in a more rational way and facilitates them to explore more cutting-edge energy storage materials. Finally, two effective techniques including heteroatom doping and composite material construction are reviewed to address the general problem of low supercapacitor energy density. This review demonstrates the great potential of biomass porous carbon with superior properties, provides advanced tailoring and design viewpoints for the application fields of high-performance supercapacitors, and is expected to inspire new exploration and boost the practical commercial applications of biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon material in more energy storage and conversion fields.

Abstract:The environmental impact from the waste disposal has been widely concerned around the world. The conversion of wastes to useful resources is important for the sustainable society. As a typical family of wastes, biomass materials basically composed of collagen, protein and lignin, are considered as useful resources for recycle and reuse. In recent years, the development of carbon material derived from biomasses, such as plants, crops, animals and their application in electrochemical energy storage have attracted extensive attention. Through the selection of the appropriate biomass, the optimization of the activation method and the control of the pyrolysis temperatures, carbon materials with desired features, such as high‐specific surface area, variable porous framework, and controllable heteroatom‐doping have been fabricated. Herein, this review summarized the preparation methods, morphologies, heteroatoms doping in the plant/animal‐derived carbonaceous materials, and their application as electrode materials for secondary batteries and supercapacitors, and as electrode support for lithium‐sulfur batteries. The challenges and prospects for the controllable synthesis and large‐scale application of biomass‐derived carbonaceous materials have also been outlooked.

Abstract:Increased energy consumption stimulates the development of various energy types. As a result, the storage of these different types of energy becomes a key issue. Supercapacitors, as one important energy storage device, have gained much attention and owned a wide range of applications by taking advantages of micro-size, lightweight, high power density and long cycle life. From this perspective, numerous studies, especially on electrode materials, have been reported and great progress in the advancement in both the fundamental and applied fields of supercapacitor has been achieved. Herein, a review of recent progress in carbon materials for supercapacitor electrodes is presented. First, the two mechanisms of supercapacitors are briefly introduced. Then, research on carbon-based material electrodes for supercapacitor in recent years is summarized, including different dimensional carbon-based materials and biomass-derived carbon materials. The characteristics and fabrication methods of these materials and their performance as capacitor electrodes are discussed. On the basis of these materials, many supercapacitor devices have been developed. Therefore, in the third part, the supercapacitor devices based on these carbon materials are summarized. A brief overview of two types of conventional supercapacitor according to the charge storage mechanism is compiled, including their development process, the merits or withdraws, and the principle of expanding the potential range. Additionally, another fast-developed capacitor, hybrid ion capacitors as a good compromise between battery and supercapacitor are also discussed. Finally, the future aspects and challenges on the carbon-based materials as supercapacitor electrodes are proposed.

Abstract:The explosive growth of energy consumption demands highly efficient energy conversion and storage devices, whose innovation greatly depends on the development of advanced electrode materials and catalysts. Among those advanced materials explored, carbon materials have drawn much attention due to their excellent properties, such as high specific surface area and tunable porous structures. Challenges also come from global warming and environmental pollution, which leads to the requirement of sustainable carbon-rich precursors for carbon materials. Hence, the use of biomass for carbon materials features the concepts of green chemistry. This review summarizes the most advanced progress in biomass-derived carbons for use in fuel cells, electrocatalytic water splitting devices, supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. Several synthetic strategies for synthesizing biomass-derived carbons, including direct pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, and ionothermal carbonization, have been reviewed, and the corresponding formation mechanisms and prospects are also discussed. This provides fundamental insight and offers important guidelines for the future design of biomass-derived carbons in specific energy applications.

Abstract:The efficient storage of electricity generated from clean energy can help liberate human beings from the shackles of fossil fuel shortage. As the existing energy storage systems are becoming close to their theoretical energy limitation, the development of next-generation energy storage is of great necessity. Carbon materials are one of the most versatile materials that play a key role in different energy storage devices because their outstanding properties like high conductivity and porosity can fulfill various requirements of energy storage devices. Most high-performance carbon materials, however, are extracted from fossil fuel by energy-intensive synthetic methods. Here comes an urgent need to reduce the production cost of carbon materials while maintaining their properties. Biomass is a promising renewable precursor of functional carbon materials for the next-generation energy storage system, on account of its abundance, sustainability, intriguing microstructures and low cost. Various carbon materials have been engineered from natural and renewable biomass resources by suitable activation and surface modification processes. As a result, their specific surface area, pore size distribution, porosity, surface chemistry and morphology have been rationally tuned and tailored to boost their electrochemical performance. In this review, the most updated research progress in the synthesis of biomass-derived carbon material for developing high-performance supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries and fuel cells are critically reviewed and summarized. For their practicability, several challenges that remain to be addressed are analyzed, and a perspective to the future research on biomass-derived carbons for energy storage is also discussed.
