Abstract:The two squares theorem of Fermat is a gem in number theory, with a spectacular one-sentence "proof from the Book". Here is a formalisation of this proof, with an interpretation using windmill patterns. The theory behind involves involutions on a finite set, especially the parity of the number of fixed points in the involutions. Starting as an existence proof that is non-constructive, there is an ingenious way to turn it into a constructive one. This gives an algorithm to compute the two squares by iterating the two involutions alternatively from a known fixed point.

Abstract:Dissections of a square into smaller squares, with the smaller squares having relatively prime sizes, are known as Mrs Perkins's quilts. A representation of these dissections using graphs is presented. The edges are directed and coloured North-South or West-East, and the graph corresponds naturally to the dissection. This representation allowed the exhaustive generation of all dissections up to order 18, using the plantri software. The results were cross-checked by generating all dissections of small sizes using a direct approach. The results confirm, extend and introduce several integer sequences.

Abstract:We introduce Quintessence: a family of burr puzzles based on the geometry and combinatorics of the 120-cell. We discuss the regular polytopes, their symmetries, the dodecahedron as an important special case, the three-sphere, and the quaternions. We then construct the 120-cell, giving an illustrated survey of its geometry and combinatorics. This done, we describe the pieces out of which Quintessence is made. The design of our puzzle pieces uses a drawing technique of Leonardo da Vinci; the paper ends with a catalogue of new puzzles.

Abstract:A quasiperiodic 7-fold rhombic tiling is constructed with an iterative substitution scheme. The inflation factor is 5.04892..., the square of the longer diagonal of a regular heptagon. There are many substitutions possible that fill larger similar tiles with three base shapes but finding the matching rules (how the larger tiles fit together to make even larger tiles) turns into a challenging puzzle. At the end, a new solution is found with seven substitution rules. The relationship to a higher-order Fibonacci series is explored. The tiling is presented with a celestial theme reminiscent of a starry night.

Abstract:Fermat's two squares theorem asserts that a prime one more than a multiple of 4 is a sum of two squares. There are many proofs of this gem in number theory, including a remarkable one-sentence proof by Don Zagier based on two involutions on a finite set built from such a prime. Applying the two involutions alternatively leads to an iterative algorithm to find the two squares for the prime. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the computation reveals that it is possible to jump through the iteration nodes, leading to a better hopping algorithm. Here is a formalisation of Zagier's proof, deriving the involutions using windmill patterns. Theories developed for the formal proof are used to establish the correctness of both algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the concept of “binary color-coded magic squares” by assigning two distinct colors to the even and odd numbers within a magic square. We investigate the uniqueness of patterns within these squares using three different analytical methods, including rotation/reflection, PCA, and LDA. Our investigation covers all 880 magic squares of order 4, all 48,544 associative magic squares of order 5, and all 368,640 Franklin magic squares of order 8. Our investigation reveals striking patterns that were previously unknown in traditional magic squares, shedding light on the potential for binary color-coded magic squares to contribute to the field of mathematics.
