Abstract:Abstract Constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal electrodes is a promising approach to address the rampant growth of dangerous lithium morphologies (dendritic and dead Li 0 ) and low Coulombic efficiency that plague development of lithium metal batteries, but how Li + transport behavior in the SEI is coupled with mechanical properties remains unknown. We demonstrate here a facile and scalable solution-processed approach to form a Li 3 N-rich SEI with a phase-pure crystalline structure that minimizes the diffusion energy barrier of Li + across the SEI. Compared with a polycrystalline Li 3 N SEI obtained from conventional practice, the phase-pure/single crystalline Li 3 N-rich SEI constitutes an interphase of high mechanical strength and low Li + diffusion barrier. We elucidate the correlation among Li + transference number, diffusion behavior, concentration gradient, and the stability of the lithium metal electrode by integrating phase field simulations with experiments. We demonstrate improved reversibility and charge/discharge cycling behaviors for both symmetric cells and full lithium-metal batteries constructed with this Li 3 N-rich SEI. These studies may cast new insight into the design and engineering of an ideal artificial SEI for stable and high-performance lithium metal batteries.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper aims to address the issues of lithium dendrite growth and low Coulombic efficiency in lithium metal batteries. Specifically, lithium metal electrodes tend to form dangerous dendritic Li and dead Li during charge and discharge cycles, leading to continuous electrolyte decomposition, ultimately resulting in battery performance degradation and safety hazards. The paper proposes a chemical method to prepare a high-purity single-crystal Li₃N artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the surface of lithium metal to reduce the lithium-ion diffusion barrier, increase the lithium-ion transference number, and enhance mechanical strength, thereby achieving dendrite-free, long-life lithium metal batteries. ### Main Research Content 1. **Design and Preparation of SEI Layer**: - Treating lithium metal with tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) to form a high-purity single-crystal Li₃N SEI layer. - Compared to traditional polycrystalline Li₃N SEI, the SEI prepared by this method has a lower lithium-ion diffusion barrier, higher lithium-ion transference number, and excellent mechanical strength. 2. **Characterization of SEI Layer**: - Structural characterization of TEMED-treated Li₃N using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). - The Li⁺ transference number was measured, and it was found that the lithium electrode treated with TEMED had a significantly higher transference number (t⁺ = 0.668). 3. **Electrochemical Performance Testing**: - Symmetric cell cycling tests were conducted on untreated and TEMED-treated lithium electrodes, showing that the TEMED-treated lithium electrodes exhibited better stability and longer cycle life at different current densities. - Its stability was also verified in commercial LiPF₆ electrolyte. 4. **Theoretical Simulation**: - Phase-field simulations were used to reveal the mechanism by which the Li₃N SEI layer inhibits lithium dendrite growth, validating the experimental results. In summary, the paper effectively addresses the dendrite issue in lithium metal batteries by designing and preparing a high-purity single-crystal Li₃N SEI layer, thereby improving the stability and cycle life of the batteries.
