Abstract:Lithium metal is an ideal anode for rechargeable lithium-battery technology. However, the extreme reactivity of Li metal with electrolytes leads to solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers that often impede Li+ transport across interfaces. The challenge is to predict the chemical, structural, and topographical heterogeneities of SEI layers arising from a multitude of interfacial constituents. Traditionally, the pathways and products of electrolyte decomposition processes were analyzed with the basic and simplifying presumption of an initial pristine Li-metal surface. However, ubiquitous inorganic passivation layers on Li metal can reduce electronic charge transfer to the electrolyte and significantly alter the SEI layer evolution. In this study, we analyzed the effect of nanometric Li2O, LiOH, and Li2CO3 as surface passivation layers on the interfacial reactivity of Li metal, using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. These nanometric layers impede the electronic charge transfer to the electrolyte and thereby provide some degree of passivation (compared to pristine lithium metal) by altering the redox-based decomposition process. The Li2O, LiOH, and Li2CO3 layers admit varying levels of electron transfer from a Li-metal slab and subsequent storage of the electronic charges within their structures. As a result, their ability to transfer electrons to the electrolyte molecules, as well as the extent of decomposition of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anions, is significantly reduced compared to similar processes on pristine Li metal. The XPS experiments revealed that when Li2O is the major component on the altered surface, LiF phases formed to a greater extent. The presence of a dominant LiOH layer, however, results in enhanced sulfur decomposition processes. From AIMD studies, these observations can be explained based on the calculated quantities of electronic charge transfer found for each of the passivating films.

Abstract:We need batteries to get the best out of renewable energies and other low-carbon energy sources, and the most promising path forward is to invest in high-energy-density battery technologies. In this regard, lithium metal is the best candidate for the anode electrode as it is the lightest metal on earth and has the lowest electrochemical potential (-3.04 V vs. SHE). However, the challenge to overcome for mass commercializing lithium-metal batteries (LMB) is stabilizing the solid electrolyte interphase that naturally grows at the electrode-electrolyte interface to avoid uncontrolled reactions leading to lithium depletion. Since the successful introduction of lithium-ion batteries (LIB), it has been known that tuning of the SEI composition and morphology is fundamental to prolong the battery life span; a well-engineered SEI layer simultaneously serves as an electron barrier and favors Li+ ion conduction across it, ensuring proper battery performance. However, the engineering of the SEI layer in LMB is more complex than its counterpart LIB batteries, given that lithium metal is overwhelmingly more reactive than graphite and the overall Li+ ion current across it is orders of magnitude higher. The up-to-date knowledge on the SEI morphology indicates that inorganic phases produced upon the decomposition of lithium salts present in the electrolyte tends to grow dominantly buried within the SEI layer, acting as an intermediate between the surviving lithium metal and the outermost organic SEI phase grown after decomposition of solvent molecules. The effect of electrolyte additives and diluents is to tweak the SEI composition. The narrative built after years of experimentation tells that proper battery functioning depends heavily on the ability of the incoming Li+ ions to desolve near the SEI outermost layer without triggering further side reactions, penetrate the inner SEI, and deposit in the anode as reduced lithium. However, the intricacies of the elementary reactions and the stage where the reduction takes place still fall beyond detailed comprehension, even though the development of in situ and operando analytical techniques has brought us a level of understanding on the subject that was unimaginable a few decades ago. In this talk, we discuss the instrumental impact that multiscale modeling techniques have played in clarifying the elementary steps of the SEI formation on pristine lithium metal, providing a comprehensive understanding of the precursors formed in the early stages of Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) growth. For instance, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that electrolyte diluents, such as TTE, previously considered inert to lithium metal, actively modify the liquid electrolyte solvation structure by weakly interacting with Li+ ions. Additionally, these diluents decompose against lithium metal, releasing fluoride ions and inundating the SEI layer with LiF. Similarly, DFT-based molecular dynamics (MD) techniques, including ab initio (AIMD) and reactive classical molecular dynamics methods (ReaxFF MD, among others), have facilitated a picoseconds (ps) scale observation of the temporal evolution of these SEI precursors, propelling a mechanistic understanding of the dynamics of the SEI formation; it is now recognized that there is an initial and rapid electrolyte decomposition occurring within the first tens of picoseconds after contact with lithium metal, preceding a longer-scale mass transfer segregation process leading to the formation of a myriad of organic and inorganic microphases within the SEI structure. However, the accessible time and space windows to MD methods fall within few hundred ps, leaving out the study of the morphological aspects of the SEI over extended cycling. In this sense, we discuss through kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) calculations the evolution of the SEI formation on lithium metal and confirm the critical role that dislocations and grain boundaries play in ensuring proper lithium plating and mobility within the SEI layer over cycling. We confirm that bulk lithium diffusion within the inorganic SEI microphases, such as LiF and Li 2 O, is significantly lower than lithium mobility across LiF/Li 2 O interfaces. We also discuss the impact of electrolyte tunning on SEI morphology and provide insights into developing an SEI formation strategy based on the electrolyte molecules electrochemical stability and their relative contents of heteroatom species, such as F and O, to seed in the SEI composition and morphology, which we believe could have a significant impact on the development of stable LMB batteries.

Abstract:Two kinds of charge transfer reactions are critical for the performance and life of lithium battery: the desired ion transfer reaction occurring during each charge/discharge cycle, , and the undesired electron transfer reactions leading to the parasitic chemical decomposition of the electrolyte and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation/growth. The heterogeneous multi-component nature of SEI dominates its ionic and electronic transport properties and controls these two charge transfer reactions. Density Functional Theory (DFT)-informed multiscale modeling has been providing valuable insights under the scarcity of quantitative experiments. For example, the LiF/Li 2 CO 3 interface was demonstrated to increase the ionic conductivity of mixed SEI nanocomposite by forming an ionic space charge region near the interface and promoting more Li-ion interstitials in Li 2 CO 3 , although LiF itself has low Li-ion conducting carriers and conductivity. To form a LiF-rich SEI layer, the electrolyte compositions need to be designed. Since the SEI formation occurs on the charged surface, the electric double layer (EDL) structure near the charged surfaces needs to be incorporated into the modeling. Here interactive classical molecular dynamics (MD), DFT, and data statistical analysis were combined to illustrate the effect of EDL on SEI formation in two essential electrolytes, the carbonate-based electrolyte for Li-ion batteries and the ether-based electrolyte for batteries with Li-metal anodes. It was found the effectiveness of adding fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to form the beneficial F-containing SEI component (e.g., LiF) varies with the electrolyte and temperature, because of the interplay of ion-solvent interactions with the surface charge. These integrated modeling provided quantitative guidance for electrolyte/SEI/Li-metal interface design.

Abstract:The existence of passivating layers at the interfaces is a major factor enabling modern lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Their properties determine the cycle life, performance, and safety of batteries. A special case is the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a heterogeneous multi-component film formed due to the instability and subsequent decomposition of the electrolyte at the surface of the anode. The SEI acts as a passivating layer that hinders further electrolyte disintegration, which is detrimental to the Coulombic efficiency. In this work, we use first-principles simulations to investigate the kinetic and electronic properties of the interface between lithium fluoride (LiF) and lithium carbonate (Li$_2$CO$_3$), two common SEI components present in Li-ion batteries with organic liquid electrolytes. We find a coherent interface between these components that restricts the strain in each of them to below 3%. We find that the interface causes a large increase in the formation energy of the Frenkel defect, generating Li vacancies in LiF and Li interstitials in Li$_2$CO$_3$ responsible for transport. On the other hand, the Li interstitial hopping barrier is reduced from $0.3$ eV in bulk Li$_2$CO$_3$ to $0.10$ or $0.22$ eV in the interfacial structure considered, demonstrating the favorable role of the interface. Controlling these two effects in a heterogeneous SEI is crucial for maintaining fast ion transport in the SEI. We further perform Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations to explore Li ion conduction in our interfacial structure, which reveal an enhanced Li ion diffusion in the vicinity of the interface. Understanding the interfacial properties of the multiphase SEI represents an important frontier to enable next-generation batteries.

Abstract:Accurate understanding of the chemistry of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is key to developing new electrolytes for high-energy batteries using lithium metal (Li 0 ) anodes 1 . SEI is generally believed to be formed by the reactions between Li 0 and electrolyte 2,3 . However, our new study shows this is not the whole story. Through synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, we reveal a much more convoluted formation mechanism of SEI, which receives considerable contributions from electrolyte, cathode, moisture and native surface species on Li 0 , with highly dynamic nature during cycling. Using isotope labelling, we traced the origin of LiH to electrolyte solvent, moisture and a new source: the native surface species (LiOH) on pristine Li 0 . When lithium accessibility is very limited as in the case of anode-free cells, LiOH develops into plate-shaped large crystals during cycling. Alternatively, when the lithium source is abundant, as in the case of Li||NMC811 cells, LiOH reacts with Li 0 to form LiH and Li 2 O. While the desired anion-derived LiF-rich SEI is typically found in the concentrated electrolytes or their derivatives, we found it can also be formed in low-concentration electrolyte via the crosstalk effect, emphasizing the importance of formation cycle protocol and opening up opportunities for low-cost electrolyte development.

Abstract:As the research endeavors push the performance of widely used Li-ion battery to its theoretical limit, there are strong urges to develop next-generation energy storage devices. Li metal is a promising candidate battery anode material which can bring the energy density to a higher level. There are safety and cycling efficiency issues associated with the Li-metal battery (LMB), and the metal dendrite nucleation and lithium whisker formation are largely responsible for them. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) generated from the reactions between lithium metal and battery electrolyte components can regulate the lithium-ion diffusion and deposition which protects anode materials from undesired consumptions. According to the experimental evidence, the SEI from carbonate electrolytes may contain inorganic components including Li 2 O, Li 2 CO 3 , LiF, as well as organic structures such as polymers and oligomers with carbonate and carbonyl structures. However, the exact composition and ionic diffusion properties of SEI are challenging to be directly characterized via experimental techniques. In this work, we initiated the elucidation of the SEI composition by investigating plausible reaction pathways. The inorganic structures are mainly resulted from the degradation of electrolyte solvent and salt species upon contact with the anode material. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation was implemented to track the interfacial reduction of ethylene carbonate (EC), vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ). Bader charge analysis demonstrated that the LiPF 6 reduction requires consecutive uptake of outside electrons, no matter such reaction happens right on the metallic surface or in electrolyte phase. The final product of the LiPF 6 degradation was determined to be Li 3 P, and the reaction thermochemistry was computed based on density functional theory (DFT). The experimentally measured battery electrochemical performance enhancement of the VC additive has been reported while the chemical mechanism behind such phenomenon was less discussed. We modeled the degradation and polymerization reactions of EC and VC molecules in the LMB environment. VC has significantly smaller energy barrier than EC to generate the lithium-carbonyl complexes and the oligomer/polymer species which takes longer time scale to form. In addition, the solvated lithium cation was found to have significant contribution to the polymerization reaction thermodynamics. The most kinetically favored pathways and products for EC and VC polymerization were identified via DFT calculations. Multiscale simulation based on the computed thermodynamic information was able to provide a glimpse of the microscopic morphology inside the SEI.
Direct Calculation of Li-Ion Transport in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Abstract:The mechanism of Li(+) transport through the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a passivating film on electrode surfaces, has never been clearly elucidated despite its overwhelming importance to Li-ion battery operation and lifetime. The present paper develops a multiscale theoretical methodology to reveal the mechanism of Li(+) transport in a SEI film. The methodology incorporates the boundary conditions of the first direct diffusion measurements on a model SEI consisting of porous (outer) organic and dense (inner) inorganic layers (similar to typical SEI films). New experimental evidence confirms that the inner layer in the ∼20 nm thick model SEI is primarily crystalline Li(2)CO(3). Using density functional theory, we first determined that the dominant diffusion carrier in Li(2)CO(3) below the voltage range of SEI formation is excess interstitial Li(+). This diffuses via a knock-off mechanism to maintain higher O-coordination, rather than direct-hopping through empty spaces in the Li(2)CO(3) lattice. Mesoscale diffusion equations were then formulated upon a new two-layer/two-mechanism model: pore diffusion in the outer layer and knock-off diffusion in the inner layer. This diffusion model predicted the unusual isotope ratio (6)Li(+)/(7)Li(+) profile measured by TOF-SIMS, which increases from the SEI/electrolyte surface and peaks at a depth of 5 nm, and then gradually decreases within the dense layer. With no fitting parameters, our approach is applicable to model general transport properties, such as ionic conductivity, for SEI films on the surface of other electrodes, from the atomic scale to the mesoscale, as well as aging phenomenon.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interface (SEI) forms as a result of side reactions between the electrolyte and electrode surfaces in Li-ion batteries and can adversely impact performance by impeding Li-ion transport and diminishing the storage capacity of the battery. To gain a detailed understanding of the impact of the SEI on electrolyte structure, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of the electrode/electrolyte interface were performed in the presence and absence of the SEI under applied voltages. The composition of the SEI was guided by a wealth of data from experiments and allowed to vary across the simulations. A novel computational approach was implemented that showed significant computational speedup compared to fully polarizable electrode simulations, yet, retained the correct qualitative physics for the electrolyte. A force-matching algorithm was used to construct a new force field for the pure electrolyte, LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate, which was developed from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The electrode/electrolyte interface was included using a simple, physically motivated model, which includes the polarization of the conducting graphitic electrode by the electrolyte and the application of an external voltage. Changes in the structure of the electrolyte at the interface as a function of applied voltage, the thickness of the SEI layer, and composition of the SEI provide molecular level insight into the species present at these interfaces and potential clues to the effect of the SEI on transport. It is noted that, with increasing SEI thickness and LiF content, lithium ions are drawn closer to the SEI surface, which implies that these interfaces favor desolvation and promote more rapid lithium transport.

Abstract:The formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and ion intercalation are two key processes in rechargeable batteries, which need to be explored under dynamic operating conditions. In this work, both planar and sandwich model lithium batteries consisting of Li metal | ionic liquid electrolyte | graphite electrode have been constructed and investigated by a series of in situ surface analysis platforms including atomic force microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that the choice of electrolyte, including the concentration and contents, has a profound effect on the SEI formation and evolution, and the subsequent ion intercalation. A smooth and compact SEI is preferably produced in high-concentration electrolytes, with FSI− salt superior to TFSI− salt, facilitating the lithiation/delithiation to achieve high capacity and excellent cycle stability, while suppressing the co-intercalation of electrolyte solvent ions. The innovative research scenario of well-defined model batteries in combination with multiple genuinely in situ surface analysis methods presented herein leads to insightful results, which provide valuable strategies for the rational design and optimization of practical batteries, and energy storage devices in general.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries are one of the promising technologies for future energy storage. One open challenge is the generation of a stable and well performing Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) between lithium metal and electrolyte. Understanding the complex interaction of reactions at the lithium surface and the resulting SEI is crucial for knowledge-driven improvement of the SEI. This study reveals the internal species distribution and geometrical aspects of the native SEI during formation by model-based analysis. To achieve this, a combination of molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and stand-alone 3D-kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is used. The kinetic Monte Carlo model determines the SEI growth features over a long time and length scale so that the SEI can be analyzed quantitatively. The simulation confirms the frequently postulated layered SEI structure arising from the decomposition of an ethylene carbonate/lithium hexafluorophosphate (2 M) electrolyte with lithium metal. These layers are not clearly separated, which is contrary to what is often reported. The gradient distribution of the species within the SEI therefore corresponds to a partly mosaic structured SEI at the borders of the layers. At the lithium surface, an inorganic layer of lithium fluoride and then lithium carbonate is observed, followed by an organic, more porous SEI layer consisting of lithium ethylene dicarbonate. Simulations further reveal the strong prevalence of corrosion processes of the metal, which provide more than 99% of the lithium for the SEI reaction processes. The salt contributes less than 1% to the SEI formation. Additionally, SEI formation below and above the initial interface was observable. The here presented novel modeling approach allows an unprecedented in-depth analysis of processes during native SEI formation that can be used to improve design for high battery performance and durability.

Abstract:The nature of the electrode–electrolyte interface has an impact on the performance and durability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The initial electrolyte's thermodynamic instability at the anode–electrolyte interface in LIBs results in the formation of a passivation layer, called solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The initial dense and intact layer allows Li+ transport and restricts electron tunneling, thus preventing electrolyte decomposition and ensuring the electrochemical stability of a battery. However, the growth of this layer can reduce the availability of active lithium and electrolyte, and ultimately lead to an irreversible battery capacity fade. Investigating the transport phenomena of lithium ions within SEI is crucial for understanding its formation and growth. Nonetheless, accurately describing all relevant mechanisms is challenging due to its complex and multiscale nature. An overview of current computational efforts to study Li+ transport within SEI is given in this article, ranging from electronic/atomistic scale simulations to macroscopic models. The drawbacks and advantages of the proposed numerical approaches are summarized along with the obstacles that need to be overcome to obtain accurate experimental data, identified on the basis of the most recent literature evidence. We highlight collaboration gaps between modeling and experimental approaches, as well as the urgent need for new multiscale models, to gain a better understanding of such a crucial transport phenomenon.

Abstract:Abstract Constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal electrodes is a promising approach to address the rampant growth of dangerous lithium morphologies (dendritic and dead Li 0 ) and low Coulombic efficiency that plague development of lithium metal batteries, but how Li + transport behavior in the SEI is coupled with mechanical properties remains unknown. We demonstrate here a facile and scalable solution-processed approach to form a Li 3 N-rich SEI with a phase-pure crystalline structure that minimizes the diffusion energy barrier of Li + across the SEI. Compared with a polycrystalline Li 3 N SEI obtained from conventional practice, the phase-pure/single crystalline Li 3 N-rich SEI constitutes an interphase of high mechanical strength and low Li + diffusion barrier. We elucidate the correlation among Li + transference number, diffusion behavior, concentration gradient, and the stability of the lithium metal electrode by integrating phase field simulations with experiments. We demonstrate improved reversibility and charge/discharge cycling behaviors for both symmetric cells and full lithium-metal batteries constructed with this Li 3 N-rich SEI. These studies may cast new insight into the design and engineering of an ideal artificial SEI for stable and high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The solid-solid contact interface is crucial for the reliability of solid-state energy storage systems. The contact condition becomes more complicated when lithium (Li) metal is used as the anode. The contact between solid electrolyte (SE) and Li metal is inferior compared to the liquid/solid interface in conventional Li-ion batteries. Experimental evidence has shown that improper operating conditions of solid-state batteries can lead to electro-chemo-mechanical failures at the Li/SE interface, including the formation of voids and the penetration of Li. In this study, a unified phase-field model is developed to investigate these two mechanisms. The model considers the coupled electro-chemo-mechanical processes including void diffusion, lattice annihilation, stripping and plating reactions, and plastic deformation of Li metal. The study begins with a revisit of the deformation-mechanism map for Li metal under a wide range of temperatures, stress, and deformation rates. This map serves as the basis for the mechanical characterization in the phase-field model. The large inelastic deformation of Li is considered by introducing an advection term into the Allen-Cahn equation, which is used to describe the dynamic evolution of the Li and void phases. The effects of current density and stack pressure on void evolution and Li penetration are studied based on the model predictions. By combining the simulation results with the experimental data from publications, we obtain the stable operation zone of stack pressure and applied current density. In this zone, the Li/SE interface can enable stable stripping and plating of Li metal. The same phase-field modeling framework is transferred to investigate the Li-Mg alloy/SE interface considering Li-Mg alloy is also used as the anode. The fundamental difference between Li/SE and Li-Mg/SE is analyzed accordingly. This study provides a useful tool for the design, manufacturing, and management of next-generation batteries by providing important scientific insights into the electro-chemo-mechanical processes of different anode materials under various operational conditions.
Molecular-Scale Interfacial Model for Predicting Electrode Performance in Rechargeable Batteries

Abstract:It is commonly believed that the formation of a solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) is the main reason for improved electrode performance in rechargeable batteries. However, herein we present a new interfacial model that may change the thinking about the role of SEI, which has prevailed over the past 2 decades. We show that the varied desolvation behavior of mobile ions, which depends on the solvation structure determined by multiple factors (e.g., cations, solvent, anions, and additives) is a critical factor for electrode stability besides the SEI. This interfacial model can predict the intercalating species in graphite electrodes (i.e., Li<sup>+</sup> (de)intercalation or Li<sup>+</sup>–solvent co-insertion) in different types of electrolytes (e.g., carbonate-, ether-based electrolyte). The generality of our model is further demonstrated by its ability to interpret the variable lithium plating/stripping in different electrolytes. Our model can predict electrode performance through the proposed cation–solvent interactions and desolvation behaviors and then help develop new types of electrolytes for mobile (ion) batteries.

Abstract:Li metal batteries (LMBs) have long been considered a solution to address the energy density limitations of Li-ion batteries. However, the widespread adoption of LMBs has faced challenges due to operational issues, notably safety concerns arising from the formation of Li dendrites and uncontrolled reactivity at the interfaces, leading to continuous consumption of the electrolyte. To enhance the reversibility of the Li-metal anode (LMA), a promising approach has emerged involving the development of a novel liquid electrolyte comprising an ether solvent and LiFSI salt. Notably, this electrolyte formulation has achieved impressive Coulombic efficiency (CE) values surpassing 99.5%. Despite this progress, the underlying causes of Coulombic inefficiency (CI) and its connection with the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the Li metal surface remain inadequately understood. Gaining fundamental insights into these essential processes occurring during continuous cycling of the LMA can provide valuable guidance for optimizing CE more effectively. This presentation focuses on recent advancements that systematically unravel the underlying chemistry and formation of SEI derived from FSI anions at the interface of the Li metal anode in contact with various liquid electrolytes. By employing a non-washing protocol and a Cu current collector, we successfully captured and identified crucial reaction intermediates from SEI chemistry, enabling precise determination of the decomposition pathway for FSI anions. Our discoveries unveil a dynamic scenario at the electrode/electrolyte interface, where these reaction byproducts can significantly dissolve into the liquid layer, and their relative solubility dictates their role in passivating the electrode surface. Furthermore, we demonstrate a strong correlation between faster interfacial passivation in higher-performing electrolytes and the reduced solubility of diverse inorganic species within the liquid electrolyte. These fresh insights into SEI chemistry and formation open new avenues for enhancing LMA performance by mitigating undesired side reactions at the interface.

Abstract:The composition, structure, and the formation mechanism of the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium-based (e.g., Li-ion and Li metal) batteries have been widely explored in the literature. However, very little is known about the ion transport through the SEI. Understanding the underlying ion diffusion processes across the SEI could lead to a significant progress, enabling the performance increase and improving safety aspects of batteries. Herein, we report the results of first-principles density functional theory calculations on the dominant diffusion pathways, energetics, and the corresponding diffusion coefficients associated with Li diffusion through the polycrystalline SEI. This paper is particularly concerned with the Li diffusion through the grain boundary (GB) formed between the three major inorganic components of the SEI, such as Li2O, LiF, and Li2CO3. Abstract:Interfacial processes of lithium (Li) deposition and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation are key determinants of the safety and performance in high-energy Li metal batteries. With the vigorous growth of effective strategies for stabilizing the interfaces, high-resolution and in situ characterization techniques are contemporaneously needed for probing and regulating the underlying mechanisms of these two processes and their interrelation. Therefore, we introduce in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) that enables direct observation of the nanoscale morphology and dynamic evolution of the Li/electrolyte interfaces in working environments. Inhomogeneous SEI with nanoparticles (NPs) forms in traditional electrolyte, which extends with chain-like wrinkles as dendrite nucleates. By precisely controlling the concentration of lithium nitrate additive, we construct a compact bilayer SEI with a thin amorphous film covering a NP-packed layer structurally, promoting the uniform Li dissolution/deposition. This in situ AFM visualization in Li metal batteries highlights direct insights into distinct nanostructures and growth dynamics of nitrate-mediated SEI film at Li anode, and provides a universal and convenient technique for interfacial analysis and mechanistic understanding of Li metal anodes.

Abstract:Using lithium metal as the anode is a promising way to raise the energy density of batteries, but inevitable lithium dendrite growth hinders the development of this kind of batteries. Albeit great efforts were devoted to uncovering the mystery of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which determines the stability of the plating and stripping of lithium metal, our understanding of SEI at the atomic scale is limited due to its complex structure and composition. This work proposes a computational framework, based on the reactive force field molecular dynamics, for simulating the SEI formation. Our results suggest the SEI in the standard EC/DEC electrolyte resembles a heterogeneous mosaic structure with an organic-rich outer layer and an inorganic-rich inner layer as the consequence of the bottom-up growth sequence. When lithium nitrate is present in the electrolyte, the preferential reduction of lithium nitrate effectively regulates the electrolyte decomposition for rendering a bilayer structure with the lithium nitrate reduction products, Li 3 N and LiN x O y , on top of the amorphous polymer matrix. Although these N-containing compounds are good lithium-ion conducting materials for retaining a uniform, fast lithium-ion transport through the SEI, we observe a significant decrease in the mechanical performance due to the high-porosity structure.

Abstract:Lithium metal is the ideal candidate to replace conventional carbonaceous anodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh/g and low negative thermodynamic potential of -3.040 V vs. SHE [1]. Fine tuning the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical for the practical implementation of liquid lithium metal batteries [2]. The presence of particular SEI species are hypothesized to improve the coulombic efficiency and mitigate dendrite formation for enhanced lifetime and safety, respectively [2]. Recently, Zhang et al. developed a novel in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy method to reveal electrolyte oxidation via carbonate dehydrogenation on Ni-based oxides in Li-ion batteries [3]. We leverage this technique and apply it to the Cu side in a Li || Cu battery to probe SEI growth and evolution. In this study, we systematically change the salt, solvent and additive components of the electrolyte and monitor the organic and inorganic SEI species that form under different electrochemical conditions. Furthermore, we directly correlate the chemical composition of the SEI to cell-level coulombic efficiency [4]. Complimentary characterization techniques will be used to further resolve the chemical structure of the SEI. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal battery is regarded as a high-energy-density battery system beyond Li-ion battery. However, the cycle life of Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is severely hindered by the high reactivity and non-uniform plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes. The plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes are mainly dictated by the transport mechanism of Li ions in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a nanoscale passivation film between the anode and electrolytes. SEI is composed of various inorganic and organic components and has a diversiform structure, which complicates the transport behaviors of Li ions in it and differentiates the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI from that in common liquid and solid electrolytes. Therefore, understanding the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI is imperative for rationally regulating SEI components and structure and enabling uniform Li plating/stripping behaviors. In this review, the recent progress in understanding the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI in Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is summarized, including the detailed transport mechanisms of Li ions in SEI, and the methods to investigate and regulate the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI. In particular, an insightful outlook is provided to guide future research on investigating the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI.
