Abstract:Control over the intensity, shape, direction and phase of coherent light is essential in numerous fields, from gravitational wave astronomy, quantum metrology and ultrafast sciences to semiconductor fabrication. Modern photonics, however, can involve parameter regimes where the wavelength or high optical powers involved restrict control due to absorption, light-induced damage or optical nonlinearity in solid media. Here we propose to circumvent these constraints using gaseous media tailored by high-intensity ultrasound waves. We demonstrate an implementation of this approach by efficiently deflecting ultrashort laser pulses using ultrasound waves in ambient air, without the use of transmissive solid media. At optical peak powers of 20 GW, exceeding previous limits of solid-based acousto-optic modulation by about three orders of magnitude, we reach a deflection efficiency greater than 50% while preserving excellent beam quality. Our approach is not limited to laser pulse deflection; gas-phase photonic schemes controlled by sonic waves could potentially be useful for realizing a new class of optical elements such as lenses or waveguides, which are effectively invulnerable against damage and can operate in new spectral regions.

Abstract:Control over intensity, shape, direction, and phase of coherent light is essential in numerous fields, reaching from gravitational wave astronomy over quantum metrology and ultrafast sciences to semi-conductor fabrication. Modern laser optics, however, frequently demands parameter regimes where either the wavelength or the optical power restricts control due to linear absorption, light-induced damage or optical nonlinearity. The properties of solid media, upon which most photonic control schemes rely, impose these limitations. We propose to circumvent these constraints using gaseous media tailored by high-intensity ultrasound waves. We demonstrate a first implementation of this approach by deflecting ultrashort laser pulses using ultrasound waves in ambient air, entirely omitting transmissive solid media. Abstract:This report describes the generation of acoustic signals via laser-interference-based heating. Sound signals of varying intensities were generated by modulating two continuous-wave (CW) laser beams interfering in air. In this study, we discovered that the acoustic signals generated by two spatial-frequency-modulated CW lasers scanning in air are significantly stronger than those of a single CW laser. The intensity of photoacoustic signals is proportional to the diameter of the laser beam. Furthermore, our investigation showed that modulating the spatial frequency of the two laser beams can change the intensity of the acoustic signal. In addition, we found that the two beams stack better against a single beam when scanned vertically in three dimensions.

Abstract:Controlled deposition of high laser-power density at remote distances still remains a challenge. Previous experimental works using terawatt peak-power laser systems to initiate filamentation at distances of hundreds or even thousands of meters in the atmosphere have documented limited control on laser energy deposition due to the effects of diffraction and turbulence. In this work, we demonstrate a promising scenario for the projection of high power densities at kilometric distances in air, which requires multiple-gigawatt laser pulses reshaped into ring-Airy beams. We show that a power distribution over a relatively large primary ring accompanied by the inward power flux characterizing a ring-Airy beam limits the occurrence of nonlinear effects to the vicinity of the focal point. Close to focus, self-focusing sets in, which accelerates the convergence process of the beam. We quantify the influence of self-focusing on the focal shift and propose an empirical law that fits our numerical simulation results for the position of the nonlinear focus as a function of the input power and the apodization factor of the ring-Airy beam. We show that once the intensity of the beam exceeds the ionization threshold of air, a short filament is generated whose power content rather accurately corresponds to the critical power for self-focusing, independent of the input parameters.

Abstract:Filamentation of ultra-short TW-class lasers recently opened new perspectives in atmospheric research. Laser filaments are self-sustained light structures of 0.1-1 mm in diameter, spanning over hundreds of meters in length, and producing a low density plasma (1015-1017 cm-3) along their path. They stem from the dynamic balance between Kerr self-focusing and defocusing by the self-generated plasma and/or non-linear polarization saturation. While non-linearly propagating in air, these filamentary structures produce a coherent supercontinuum (from 230 nm to 4 µm, for a 800 nm laser wavelength) by self-phase modulation (SPM), which can be used for remote 3D-monitoring of atmospheric components by Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging). However, due to their high intensity (1013-1014 W cm-2), they also modify the chemical composition of the air via photo-ionization and photo-dissociation of the molecules and aerosols present in the laser path. These unique properties were recently exploited for investigating the capability of modulating some key atmospheric processes, like lightning from thunderclouds, water vapor condensation, fog formation and dissipation, and light scattering (albedo) from high altitude clouds for radiative forcing management. Here we review recent spectacular advances in this context, achieved both in the laboratory and in the field, reveal their underlying mechanisms, and discuss the applicability of using these new non-linear photonic catalysts for real scale weather control.

Abstract:Laser-plasma sound sources are increasingly utilized in technological and scientific applications as attractive alternatives to conventional electromechanical or piezoelectric transducers. This work presents a systematic experimental study of laser-plasma sound sources generated in atmospheric air by strong, short and ultrashort laser pulses. Emphasis is given on the dependence of their acoustic emission on the characteristics of the optical radiation. In the experiments, nanosecond and femtosecond laser pulses with different energies and optical wavelengths are focused in atmospheric air using lenses of different focusing power. The produced acoustic pulses are captured via a system with high dynamic range and broad frequency response in the far field of the plasma source. The acoustic signals are analysed both in the time and frequency domains to extract their primary characteristics, particularly the total acoustic energy, peak pressure, spectral magnitude and spectral peak frequency. The results are systematically examined and compared with respect to the characteristics of the exciting laser pulses. The experimental observations are supported by theoretical calculations of the generated plasma density via rate equations that account for the main ionization and electron loss mechanisms. The presented analysis provides a frame for controlling the acoustic characteristics of laser-plasma sound sources, which is particularly important for applications in the fields of acoustic measurements, sound reproduction and biomedicine.

Abstract:A new laser scanning system is presented based on two wide-band acousto-optic deflectors. The interaction medium is tellurium dioxide. Anisotropic interactions take place under two different tangential phase matching configurations in such a way that the acousto-optic bandwidths add up. We demonstrate the feasibility of such a cascade deflection system for the wavelength of λ=514nm. The total frequency bandwidth is Δf=100MHz, equally distributed between the two acousto-optic deflectors. The total angular scan at the output is Δθ=4.4° leading to 125 resolvable spots for a 1mm truncated Gaussian beam.

Abstract:We propose a broadband acoustic metalaser that can effectively concentrate incident acoustic energy on the central axis for a long distance. The acoustic metalaser is axisymmetric and consists of a series of concentric-ring-like structures. By adjustment of the geometric parameters of the structure, the transmitted phase can be effectively controlled, and an energy-concentrated beam with a central pressure maximum along the beam axis can be generated. Because of the similar phase tendency of the metastructure at different frequencies, the same structure could achieve broadband acoustic energy convergence without the need for changes. We examine the broadband performance of the proposed metalaser using continuous sine waves of different frequencies from 2.5 to 18 kHz numerically and experimentally. In addition, the propagation of pulse waves with relative bandwidths of 53% and 117% through the metalaser is also investigated in the transient domain, where the effect of the acoustic metalaser on a broadband signal containing multiple frequencies is examined simultaneously. The results prove the ability of the metalaser for broadband acoustic energy convergence while the signal envelope is kept almost unchanged. Abstract:The generation of hydrodynamic radiation in interactions of pulsed proton and laser beams with matter is explored. The beams were directed into a water target and the resulting acoustic signals were recorded with pressure sensitive sensors. Measurements were performed with varying pulse energies, sensor positions, beam diameters and temperatures. The obtained data are matched by simulation results based on the thermo-acoustic model with uncertainties at a level of 10%. The results imply that the primary mechanism for sound generation by the energy deposition of particles propagating in water is the local heating of the medium. The heating results in a fast expansion or contraction and a pressure pulse of bipolar shape is emitted into the surrounding medium. An interesting, widely discussed application of this effect could be the detection of ultra-high energetic cosmic neutrinos in future large-scale acoustic neutrino detectors. For this application a validation of the sound generation mechanism to high accuracy, as achieved with the experiments discussed in this article, is of high importance.

Abstract:Abstract Relativistic electrons moving over a periodic metal grating can lead to an intriguing emission of light, known as Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR), the precursor of the free-electron laser. During the radiation process, the speed of light plays a critical role in determining the emitted angle and frequency spectrum. Inspired by the photonic SPR, here we experimentally demonstrate a photoacoustic version of the Smith-Purcell effect using laser-induced surface shock waves generation. We observe similar acoustic radiation pattern and their associated frequency spectrum in the far-field, perfectly predicted by a universal theory working for both the photonic and acoustic SPR. Moreover, our numerical studies reveal non-constant frequency components due to the supersonic traveling of the shock waves in the near field, greatly contrasting its photonic counterpart. This scheme extends the SPR into the acoustic domain by levitating the wave’s speed limit, paves the way towards coherent acoustic wave generation and microstructure metrology.

Abstract:The technique of intensity dependent photoacoustic probe beam deflection has been applied to the determination of surface damage thresholds. We take advantage of an unambiguous correlation between the degree of laser damage and the energy in the generated acoustic pulse. The high sensitivity of this method, cross checked by measuring scatter losses in reflection, is independent of any surface optical properties. As an example for optical materials, damage thresholds for MgF2 and CaF2 have been determined to be about 1.4 GW/cm2 , and for LiF to be about 0.2 GW/cm2 .

Abstract:The acoustic signal has demonstrated its capabilities in assisting laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements. In this study, the acoustic characteristics of laser-induced plasmas (LIPs) under different levels of energy deposition were analyzed, and their correlation with LIP forming dynamics was investigated. In the deposited energy space, two zones in the acoustic pressure and duration were observed, featuring a clear transition point in 100 mJ. The analysis based on self-emission spectra and images suggested that this transition is a result of the change in plasma forming dynamics. Above 100mJ, the plasma temperature and electron density were saturated; thus, any further increase in deposited energy only contributes to the plasma size. In this regime, the acoustic wave from the significantly elongated plasma no longer satisfied the ideal spherical assumption. The observation was also strengthened by the analysis in the frequency domain. Moreover, the correlation between acoustic and radiation signals was also changed significantly with plasma forming dynamics. This study offers a systematic analysis of LIP acoustic signals on the deposited energy space. The potential of using acoustic measurement to interpret the plasma forming dynamics was demonstrated, which could be beneficial for the successful implementations of acoustic-aided LIBS.

A Superconducting Single-Atom Phonon Laser

Abstract:The development of quantum acoustics has enabled the cooling of mechanical objects to their quantum ground state, generation of mechanical Fock-states, and Schrodinger cat states. Such demonstrations have made mechanical resonators attractive candidates for quantum information processing, metrology, and macroscopic tests of quantum mechanics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a direct quantum-acoustic equivalent of a single-atom laser. A single superconducting qubit coupled to a high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator is used to drive the onset of phonon lasing. We observe the absence of a sharp lower lasing threshold and characteristic upper lasing threshold, unique predictions of single-atom lasing. Lasing of an object with a 25 ug mass represents a new regime of laser physics. It provides a possible tool for generating large amplitude coherent states in circuit quantum acoustodynamics, which is important for fundamental and quantum information applications.

Abstract:Optical modulators can be made nowadays with high modulation speed, broad bandwidth, while being compact, owing to the recent advance in material science and microfabrication technology. However, these optical modulators usually work for low intensity light beams. Here, we present an ultrafast, plasma-based optical modulator, which can directly modulate high power lasers with intensity up to 10^16 W/cm^2 level to produce an extremely broad spectrum with a fractional bandwidth over 100%, extending to the mid-infrared regime in the low-frequency side. This concept relies on two co-propagating laser beams in a sub-mm-scale underdense plasma, where a drive laser pulse first excites an electron plasma wave in its wake while a following carrier laser beam is modulated by the plasma wave. The laser and plasma parameters suitable for the modulator to work are presented. Such optical modulators may enable new applications in the high field physics.

Focusing Surface Acoustic Waves with a Plasmonic Hypersonic Lens

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoantennas have proven to be efficient transducers of electromagnetic to mechanical energy and vice versa. The sudden thermal expansion of these structures after an ultrafast optical pulsed excitation leads to the emission of hypersonic acoustic waves to the supporting substrate, which can be detected by another antenna that acts as a high-sensitive mechanical probe due to the strong modulation of its optical response. Sophisticated fabrication techniques, together with the implementation of numerical simulations, have allowed the engineering of nanostructures for the controlled directional generation and detection of high-frequency acoustic phonons at the nanoscale, with many potential applications in telecommunications, sensing, mechanical switching, and energy transport. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a nanoscale acoustic lens comprised of 11 gold nanodisks whose collective oscillation gives rise to an interference pattern that results in a diffraction-limited surface acoustic beam of about 340 nm width, with an amplitude contrast of 60%. Via spatially decoupled pump-probe experiments, we were able to map the radiated acoustic energy in the proximity of the focal area, obtaining a very good agreement with the continuum elastic theory.

Abstract:Acoustic manipulation has been a topic of significant research in recent years. However, the trapping scale in the radiative acoustic field domain is severely limited by the diffraction limit of the classic wave. Here, we report on a simple strategy to create multiple acoustic diffraction-limit-broken spots at different spatial positions in the far-field region for a wide frequency range. The subwavelength acoustic field comes from the interference of the plentiful diffractive beams specific to a quasiperiodic structure plate. We analyze the acoustic radiation force of the gradient field at multiheight plane above the plate for different frequencies and further demonstrate acoustic pushing and ring-shaped trapping of polystyrene particles within this subwavelength region. This work could be envisaged to pave a way for high-resolution manipulation of tiny particles in biomedical and cell research fields.

Abstract:Recent investigations carried out at the Laboratory of Optical Physics, Institute of Physics, CAS, on the propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air is presented. A long-distance plasma channel is formed with a length of several hundreds meters. Four methods are developed to diagnose the plasma channel. Strong third harmonic emission is observed with a maximum conversion efficiency of 0.3%. The filaments distribution is optimized for applications using a pinhole with different diameters. The lifetime of the plasma channel is prolonged up to the order of microsecond. The filamentation process and the surpercontinuum emission are closely related with the initial chirp of the laser pulse. Triggering and guiding of large gap discharges in air by plasma channels opens promising perspectives for lightning control.

Abstract:Acousto-optics consists of launching acoustic waves in a medium (usually a crystal) in order to modulate its refractive index and create a tunable optical grating. In this article, we present the theoretical basis of a new scheme to generate acousto-optics in a gas, where the acoustic waves are initiated by the localized absorption (and thus gas heating) of spatially-modulated UV light, as was demonstrated in Y. Michine and H. Yoneda, Commun. Phys. 3, 24 (2020). We identify the chemical reactions initiated by the absorption of UV light via the photodissociation of ozone molecules present in the gas, and calculate the resulting temperature increase in the gas as a function of space and time. Solving the Euler fluid equations shows that the modulated, isochoric heating initiates a mixed acoustic/entropy wave in the gas, whose high-amplitude density (and thus refractive index) modulation can be used to manipulate a high-power laser. We calculate that diffraction efficiencies near 100% can be obtained using only a few millimeters of gas containing a few percent ozone fraction at room temperature, with UV fluences of less than 100 mJ/cm2, consistent with the experimental measurements. Our analysis suggests possible ways to optimize the diffraction efficiency by changing the buffer gas composition. Gases have optics damage thresholds two to three orders of magnitude beyond those of solids; these optical elements should therefore be able to manipulate kJ-class lasers.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 10.8 kW, 2.6 times diffraction limited laser based on a continuous wave (CW) Nd:YAG oscillator using an unstable resonator and an extra-cavity adaptive optics system was presented. Two Nd:YAG slabs and a disk-laser configuration were used to make the laser compact and power scalable. The output was a rectangular annulus, which was further expanded to a square annulus and was adaptively corrected by an extra-cavity deformable mirror (DM). The DM was designed to be capable of correcting the square annular wavefront aberrations. In the experiment, the vertical beam quality was improved from 51.7 to 2.6 times diffraction limited after correction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest power and brightness based on a CW Nd:YAG oscillator.
