Abstract:Newton's deduction of the inverse square law from Kepler's ellipse and area laws together with his "superb theorem" on the gravitation attraction of spherically symmetric bodies, are the major steps leading to the discovery of the law of universal gravitation (Principia, 1687). The goal of this article is to revisit some "well-known" events in the history of science, and moreover, to provide elementary and clean-cut proofs, still in the spirit of Newton, of these major advances. Being accessible to first year university students, the educational aspect of such a coherent presentation should not be overlooked.

Abstract:This document gathers the notes of a 30-hour review course on gravitation, which I delivered in January 2018 and January 2019 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences of Cameroon (AIMS-Cameroon). Its main goal is to propose a big picture of gravitation, where Einstein's relativity arises as a natural increment to Newton's theory. It is designed for bachelor/master students who do not necessarily have prior knowledge about relativity. The students are nevertheless expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of Newton's mechanics and gravitation, for the first chapter to be a mere reformulation of known concepts. The second chapter then introduces special and general relativity at the same time, while the third chapter explores concrete manifestations of relativistic gravitation, notably gravitational waves and black holes. Each section corresponds, on average, to slightly more than a 2-hour black-board lecture. The numerous exercises must be considered part of the course itself; they are intended to stimulate active reading.

Abstract:These lecture notes in geometric mechanics are meant to convey insight through clear definitions and workable examples. The lecture format adopted here is intended to convey the immediacy of the taught course and to be useful as a basis for other courses. The lecture notes comprise: AP = Applications of Pure maths, e.g., Noether's theorem: Lie group symmetry of Hamilton's variational principle implies conservation laws for its equations of motion.\smallskip PA = Purifications of Applied maths, e.g., Euler fluid dynamics describes geodesic flow on the manifold of smooth invertible maps acting on the domain of flow. \smallskip Both AP and PA appear here, though the difference is not mentioned. It is left to the reader to decide whether it was AP or PA in each of the lectures containing well over sixty solved exercises. An aspect of modern applications emphasised here is the use of the composition of evolutionary maps for multi-physics, multi-timescale interactions including waves interacting with flows in the Euler--Poincaré framework in geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) for ocean and atmosphere dynamics, and in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for applications in plasma physics such as magnetic confinement fusion (MFC) and astrophysical processes such as Alfvén waves and gravity waves propagating on the Solar tachocline. The topics covered in each lecture can also be gleaned from its table of contents listed at the onset of each lecture.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold: First, we give a formal introduction to the basics of the mathematical framework of classical mechanics. Along the way, we prove a Hamiltonian and a Lagrangian version of Noether's Theorem, an important result concerning continuous symmetries of physical systems. At the end, we prove a new statement about orbit cylinders on homotopies of stable regular energy hypersurfaces. The main question we answer is what is the dynamical meaning of stability? The second aim is to provide a didactical framework for introducing advanced mathematics, which can also be of used in other topics. A broad range of established methods belonging to the realm of cognitive activation as well as formative assessment techniques are used.

Abstract:Despite the huge number of research into the three-body problem in physics and mathematics, the study of this problem still remains relevant both from the point of view of its broad application and taking into account its fundamental significance for the theory of dynamical systems. In addition, to solve the problem of quantum-to-classical transition, it is important to answer the question: is irreversibility fundamental to the description of the classical world? To answer this question, we considered a reference classical dynamical system, the general three-body problem, formulating it in conformal Euclidean space and rigorously proving its equivalence to the Newtonian three-body problem. It is shown that a curved configuration space with a local coordinate system reveals new hidden symmetries of the internal motion of a dynamical system, which makes it possible to reduce the problem to a 6th order system instead of the known 8th order. The most important consequence of this consideration is that the chronologizing parameter of the motion of a system of particles, which we call internal time, is in the general case irreversible, which is characteristic of the general three-body problem. An equation is derived that describes the evolution of the flow of geodesic trajectories, with the help of which the entropy of the system is constructed. New criteria for assessing the complexity of a low-dimensional dynamic system and the dimension of stochastic fractal structures arising in three-dimensional space are obtained. An effective mathematical algorithm has been developed for the numerical simulation of the general three-body problem, which is traditionally a difficult-to-solve system of stiff ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:In this article, we review the main results of Volume I of Newton's Principia which relates Kepler's law of planets and universal gravitation. In order to clarify the reasoning of Newton, elementary and simple proofs are given to inspire earnest young students. All proofs are based on either the symmetry of spheres or taking great advantage of Kepler's law of area which also reflects the symmetry of centripedal forces.

Abstract:(revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.

Abstract:In this course, I talk about the source of mathematical constructivism and its role in the future development of theoretical physics. I describe what physical constructivism is and why it is necessary for the penetration of exact methods of theoretical physics to the area of complex systems, which formally belong to the others natural disciplines. I describe the concrete heuristic for the creating of models of constructive quantum theory the method of collective behavior. I represent the constructive viewpoint on the quantum computer, which treats it as the model object of many particle quantum physics, and the practical recommendation concerning its building. Due to the known inertia of the educational system constructive methods in mathematics remains mostly unknown to the wide physical community, and I hope that this course will stimulate the interest to the new possibilities, which these methods open. These possibilities represent interest to natural scientists and for programmers as well.

Abstract:I tell about different mathematical tool that is important in general relativity. The text of the book includes definition of geometrical object, concept of reference frame, geometry of metric-affinne manifold. Using this concept I learn few physical applications: dynamics and Lorentz transformation in gravitational fields, Doppler shift. A reference frame in event space is a smooth field of orthonormal bases. Every reference frame is equipped by anholonomic coordinates. Using anholonomic coordinates allows to find out relative speed of two observers and appropriate Lorentz transformation. Synchronization of a reference frame is an anholonomic time coordinate. Simple calculations show how synchronization influences time measurement in the vicinity of the Earth. Measurement of Doppler shift from the star orbiting the black hole helps to determine mass of the black hole. We call a manifold with torsion and nonmetricity the metric\hyph affine manifold. The nonmetricity leads to a difference between the auto parallel line and the extreme line, and to a change in the expression of the Frenet transport and moving basis. The torsion leads to a change in the Killing equation. We also need to add a similar equation for the connection. The analysis of the Frenet transport leads to the concept of the Cartan transport and an introduction of the connection compatible with the metric tensor. The dynamics of a particle follows to the Cartan transport. We need additional physical constraints to make a nonmetricity observable. Learning how torsion influences on tidal force reveals similarity between tidal equation for geodesic and the Killing equation of second type.

I explain how they are connected to some of the central issues in philosophy, such as ontology, possibility, explanation, induction, counterfactuals, time, determinism, and fundamentality. I suggest that laws are fundamental facts that govern the world by constraining its physical possibilities. I examine three hallmarks of laws--simplicity, exactness, and objectivity--and discuss whether and how they may be associated with laws of physics.

Abstract:FOR the student beginning theoretical mechanics a treatment based entirely on Newton's laws of motion seems to be not only desirable but also absolutely necessary if a sound basis on which further development may rest is to be assured. At the outset the reduction to mathematical form of the problems of mechanics has to be faced, and this proves as a rule to be the greatest stumbling-block; the subsequent mathematical treatment appears in the main to offer much less difficulty than the original formulation. The reason for this difficulty in formulation is generally traceable to two causes (1) an insufficient appreciation of the simplifying assumptions in the external conditions which must be made in order to render the problem manageable; (2) an inadequate grasp of the mechanical principles contained in Newton's laws. To overcome (1) there must be a careful specification of the conditions under which the solution is sought and a minimum use of conventional language. The remedy for (2) is a proper explanation and exemplification of principles. This, it is Prof. Plummer's object to supply.

Abstract:In teaching the physical sciences, a significant challenge lies in the student's tendency to consider the scientific world and the "real" world as separate. For example, Newton's 1st Law of Motion states that an object in motion remains in motion in a straight line unless acted on by an external force. However, our experience tells us that most objects keep moving only as long as someone or something pushes on them. One key to understanding physics is the ability to abstract the "law" from a reality which also includes friction and other effects. In this article we describe a college course for non-science majors, The Physics of Dance. The central theme of this course is the personalization of the physics of motion by making each student the object. With this approach we give students not only scientific tools to measure and understand but personal involvement to experience forces and motion. This combination provides a bridge that connects the science to reality.

Abstract:The central problem of the article is the paradox in the history of Newton’s mechanics: prominent researchers of the genesis of the Principia did not believe Newton’s words about the origin of the idea of universal gravity. They did not believe that he could have come up with this idea as early as 1666, considering circular orbits, and believed that Newton invented the story of the falling apple. The article proposes a “subjunctive” scenario leading to the law of universal gravity and feasible at the level of Galileo’s knowledge and skills in 1611. The basis for such a scenario is the description of a thought experiment in Newton’s manuscript “The System of the World”, preceding the creation of Principia. The proposed reconstruction helps to consider and clarify the concept of “modern physics”, the birth of which was the main event of the Scientific Revolution of the XVI–XVII centuries. The traditional understanding reduces the essence of modern physics to a reliance on experience and on the language of mathematics. Such a definition, however, is not sufficient. The geometry of Euclid and the physics of Archimedes were mathematically perfect, and their axioms were based on objective experience. Despite the importance of the tools of mathematics and experiment, the key innovation of modern physics has become the belief in the hidden fundamental laws of the Universe and in the right of the researcher to invent invisible, “illogical”, “absurd” concepts and postulates, experimentally verifiable only together with the theory based on them. This postulate of fundamental cognitive optimism combines bold ingenuity with a humble need for empirical verification.
