Abstract:Dipole gravitational disturbances from gravitationally unbound mass quadrupoles propagate to the radiation zone with signal strength at least of quadrupole order if the quadrupoles are nonrelativistic, and of dipole order if relativistic. Angular distributions of parallel-polarized and transverse-polarized dipole power in the radiation zone are calculated for simple unbound quadrupoles, like a linear-oscillator/stress-wave pair and a particle storage ring. Laboratory tests of general relativity through measurements of dipole gravity waves in the source region are proposed. A NASA G2 flywheel module with a modified rotor can produce a post-Newtonian dc bias signal at a gradiometer up to 1 mE. At peak luminosity, the repulsive dipole impulses of proton bunches at the LHC can produce an rms velocity of a high-Q detector surface up to 4 micron/s. Far outside the source region, Newtonian lunar dipole gravity waves can produce a 1-cm displacement signal at LISA. Dipole signal strengths of astrophysical events involving unbound quadrupoles, like near collisions and neutron star kicks in core-collapse supernovae, are estimated.

Abstract:We start with a summary of the theory of the gravitational polarization of the quantum vacuum, which makes it possible to consider the quantum vacuum as a source of gravity in the Universe. Next, because virtual gravitational dipoles are indispensable for this theory, we suggested different theoretical possibilities for their existence. After that, we consider the first indications that three potential phenomena which, if confirmed, will present a major challenge to the Standard Cosmology, can be explained within the framework of the gravitational polarization of the quantum vacuum; this adds to the already existing successes of the theory. These potential phenomena include: non-Newtonian gravity in internal dynamics of Wide Binary Stars; the existence of massive relic galaxies, as NGC 1277, which is dark matter deficient; a surprisingly fast formation of the first stars and galaxies. Finally, as an example of the complexity of gravitational polarization, we demonstrated the existence of regions with a negative effective gravitational charge; the insufficient understanding of complexity of polarization was reason for premature claims that observations within the Solar System dismiss the gravitational polarization of the quantum vacuum. All this suggests that recent antimatter gravity experiment at CERN (which proved that atoms and antiatoms have gravitational charge of the same sign and hence ruled out the existence of a particular kind of gravitational dipoles) cannot be considered as a disproof of the theory. The existence of virtual gravitational dipoles and gravitational polarization of the quantum vacuum remain open questions and exciting possibilities for a new model of the Universe.

Abstract:We revisit a question asked by Dyson: "Is a graviton detectable?" We demonstrate that in both Dyson's original sense and in a more modern measurement-theoretic sense, it is possible to construct a detector sensitive to single gravitons, and in fact a variety of existing and near-term gravitational wave detectors can achieve this. However, while such a signal would be consistent with the quantization of the gravitational field, we draw on results from quantum optics to show how the same signal could just as well be explained via classical gravitational waves. Gravitational Waves from the Cosmological Quark-Hadron Phase Transition Revisited

Abstract:The recent claim by the NANOGrav collaboration of a possible detection of an isotropic gravitational wave background stimulated a series of investigations searching for the origin of such a signal. The QCD phase transition appears as a natural candidate and in this paper the gravitational spectrum generated during the conversion of quarks into hadrons is calculated. Here, contrary to recent studies, equations of state for the quark-gluon plasma issued from the lattice approach were adopted. The duration of the transition, an important parameter affecting the amplitude of the gravitational wave spectrum, was estimated self-consistently with the dynamics of the universe controlled by the Einstein equations. The gravitational signal generated during the transition peaks around 0,28 \mu Hz, being unable to explain the claimed NANOGrav signal. However, the expected QCD gravitational wave background could be detected by the planned spatial interferometer Big Bang Observer in its advanced version for frequencies above 1.0 mHz. This possible detection assumes that algorithms recently proposed will be able to disentangle the cosmological signal from that expected for the astrophysical background generated by black hole binaries.

Abstract:More recently, the ALPHA-g experiment has shown that antiatoms fall in the Earth's gravitational field like ordinary atoms, with the non-negligible possibility that antiatoms fall with a slightly lower acceleration. A possible lower acceleration of antiatoms (which could be revealed with two orders of magnitude higher precision measurements) would be an epoch-making discovery and a window to a new physics, suggesting among other things that quarks and antiquarks have gravitational charges of opposite sign. If gravitational charges of opposite sign exist, it implies the existence of virtual gravitational dipoles in the quantum vacuum, and opens up the possibility of including the quantum vacuum as an important source of gravity in the Universe.

Abstract:The generation, as well as the detection, of gravitational radiation by means of charged superfluids is considered. One example of such a "charged superfluid" consists of a pair of Planck-mass-scale, ultracold "Millikan oil drops," each with a single electron on its surface, in which the oil of the drop is replaced by superfluid helium. When levitated in a magnetic trap, and subjected to microwave-frequency electromagnetic radiation, a pair of such "Millikan oil drops" separated by a microwave wavelength can become an efficient quantum transducer between quadrupolar electromagnetic and gravitational radiation. This leads to the possibility of a Hertz-like experiment, in which the source of microwave-frequency gravitational radiation consists of one pair of "Millikan oil drops" driven by microwaves, and the receiver of such radiation consists of another pair of "Millikan oil drops" in the far field driven by the gravitational radiation generated by the first pair. The second pair then back-converts the gravitional radiation into detectable microwaves. The enormous enhancement of the conversion efficiency for these quantum transducers over that for electrons arises from the fact that there exists macroscopic quantum phase coherence in these charged superfluid systems.

Abstract:The observation of gravitational waves opens up a new window to probe the universe and the nature of the gravitational field itself. As a result, they serve as a new and promising tool to not only test our current theories but to study different models that go beyond our current understanding. In this paper, inspired by recent successes in scalar and Maxwell electrodynamics, we analyze the role played by the (quantum) Unruh effect on the production of both classical and quantum gravitational waves by a uniformly accelerated mass. Abstract:de Broglie gravitational waves represent a classical realization of a form of dynamics that was proposed by de Broglie at the beginning of the last century. They are oscillations of spacetime with an effective mass, which is responsible for longitudinal effects that are absent in standard gravitational waves. In this article we study the influence of this gravitational field on a two-level atom in a semiclassical way. We will work out a gauge independent expression of the effective potential describing such interaction and we will use it to compute the transition amplitude between two quantum states. For a two-level hydrogen atom we will find an example of gravitational qubit, meaning that the quantum system exhibits periodic transitions between the states (Rabi oscillations) in analogy to the case of electromagnetic interaction. As an application, we will consider a gravity wave associated to a neutrino and we will estimate the transition frequency.

Abstract:Even if globally neutral, in various scenarios compact objects can have a nonvanishing dipole moment. Examples include neutron stars with magnetic dipoles, black-hole microstates in the string-theory fuzzball scenario, and classical black holes in modified theories of gravity with spin-induced scalarization or Lorentz-violating terms. A fundamental dipole moment would give rise to rich phenomenology, for example, to intrinsic precession and extra emission channels in binary systems. We show that extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) detectable by future gravitational-wave interferometers allow us to study a fundamental dipole on the secondary object in a model-agnostic fashion. By developing a general model for a fundamental scalar dipole, we compute the extra flux associated with it. This effect is suppressed by the square of the mass ratio relative to the case of fundamental charges, making its detection with EMRIs very challenging for the typical dipole moments predicted in various models. Radio Science Investigation on a Mercury Orbiter Mission

Abstract:We review the results from {\it Mariner 10} regarding Mercury's gravity field and the results from radar ranging regarding topography. We discuss the implications of improving these results, including a determination of the polar component, as well as the opportunity to perform relativistic gravity tests with a future {\it Mercury Orbiter}. With a spacecraft placed in orbit with periherm at 400 km altitude, apherm at 16,800 km, period 13.45 hr and latitude of periherm at +30 deg, one can expect a significant improvement in our knowledge of Mercury's gravity field and geophysical properties. The 2000 Plus mission that evolved during the European Space Agency (ESA) {\it Mercury Orbiter} assessment study can provide a global gravity field complete through the 25th degree and order in spherical harmonics. If after completion of the main mission, the periherm could be lowered to 200 km altitude, the gravity field could be extended to 50th degree and order. We discuss the possibility that a search for a Hermean ionosphere could be performed during the mission phases featuring Earth occultations. Because of its relatively large eccentricity and close proximity to the Sun, Mercury's orbital motion provides one of the best solar-system tests of general relativity. Consequently, we emphasize the number of feasible relativistic gravity tests that can be performed within the context of the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism - a useful framework for testing modern gravitational theories. We pointed out that current results on relativistic precession of Mercury's perihelion are uncertain by 0.5 %, and we discuss the expected improvement using {\it Mercury Orbiter}. Abstract:One of the conceptual tensions between quantum mechanics (QM) and general relativity (GR) arises from the clash between the spatial nonseparability of entangled states in QM, and the complete spatial separability of all physical systems in GR, i.e., between the nonlocality implied by the superposition principle, and the locality implied by the equivalence principle. Experimental consequences of this conceptual tension will be explored for macroscopically coherent quantum fluids, such as superconductors, superfluids, and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), subjected to tidal and Lense-Thirring fields arising from gravitational radiation. A Meissner-like effect is predicted, in which the Lense-Thirring field is expelled from the bulk of a quantum fluid. Superconductors are predicted to be macroscopic quantum gravitational antennas and transducers, which can directly convert upon reflection a beam of quadrupolar electromagnetic radiation into gravitational radiation, and vice versa, and thus serve as both sources and receivers of gravitational waves. An estimate of the transducer conversion efficiency on the order of unity comes out of the Ginzburg-Landau theory for an extreme type II, dissipationless superconductor with minimal coupling to weak gravitational and electromagnetic radiation fields, whose frequency is smaller than the BCS gap frequency, thus satisfying the quantum adiabatic theorem. The concept of ``the impedance of free space for gravitational plane waves'' is introduced, and leads to a natural impedance-matching process, in which the two kinds of radiation fields are impedance-matched to each other around a hundred coherence lengths beneath the surface of the superconductor. A simple, Hertz-like experiment has been performed to test these ideas, and preliminary results will be reported.

Abstract:Relying only on the standard model of elementary particles and gravity, we study the details of a new source of gravitational waves whose origin is in quantum physics. Namely, it is well known that massless fields in curved backgrounds suffer from the so-called "trace anomaly". This anomaly can be cast in terms of new scalar degrees of freedom which take account of macroscopic effects of quantum matter in gravitational fields. The linearized effective action for these fields describes scalar (as opposed to transverse) gravitational waves, which are absent in Einstein's theory. Since these new degrees of freedom couple directly to the gauge field scalars in QCD, the epoch of the QCD phase transition in early universe is a possible source of primordial cosmological gravitational radiation. While the anomaly is most likely fully unsuppressed at the QCD densities (temperature is much higher than the u and d quark masses), just to be careful we introduced the window function which cuts-off very low frequencies where the anomaly effect might be suppressed. We then calculated the characteristic strain of the properly adjusted gravitational waves signal today. The region of the parameter space with no window function gives a stronger signal, and both the strain and the frequencies fall within the sensitivity of the near future gravitational wave experiments (e.g. LISA and The Big Bang Observer). The possibility that one can study quantum physics with gravitational wave astronomy even in principle is exciting, and will be of value for future endeavors in this field.

Abstract:In this paper, the emission of gravitational waves in quadratic gravity theory is examined. The wave equations for massless and massive perturbations are derived, followed by the calculation of the energy and angular momentum radiated. In the quadrupole approximation, and taking into account only the transverse-traceless modes, it is shown that the theory avoids the issues generated by the Ostrogradsky instabilities and achieves positive energy and angular momentum emissions. As an example, a rotating ellipsoid with free precession is analyzed, and the effects of the massive perturbations on its rotation are highlighted.

Abstract:The aLIGO detection of the black-hole binary GW150914 opened a new era for probing extreme gravity. Many gravity theories predict the emission of dipole gravitational radiation by binaries. This is excluded to high accuracy in binary pulsars, but entire classes of theories predict this effect predominantly (or only) in binaries involving black holes. Joint observations of GW150914-like systems by aLIGO and eLISA will improve bounds on dipole emission from black-hole binaries by six orders of magnitude relative to current constraints, provided that eLISA is not dramatically descoped.

Graviton propagation within the context of the D-material universe

Abstract:Motivated by the recent breakthrough of the detection of Gravitational Waves (GW) from coalescent black holes by the aLIGO interferometers, we study the propagation of GW in the D-material universe, which we have recently shown to be compatible with large-scale structure and inflationary phenomenology. The medium of D-particles induces an effective mass for the graviton, as a consequence of the formation of recoil-velocity field condensates due to the underlying Born-Infeld dynamics. There is a competing effect, due to a super-luminal refractive index, as a result of the gravitational energy of D-particles acting as a dark-matter component, with which propagating gravitons interact. We examine conditions for the condensate under which the latter effect is sub-leading. We argue that if quantum fluctuations of the recoil velocity are relatively strong, which can happen in the current era of the universe, then the condensate, and hence the induced mass of the graviton, can be several orders of magnitude larger than the magnitude of the cosmological constant today. Hence, we constrain the graviton mass using aLIGO and pulsar-timing observations (which give the most stringent bounds at present). In such a sub-luminal graviton case, there is also a gravitational Cherenkov effect for ordinary high-energy cosmic matter, which is further constrained by means of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray observations. Assuming cosmic rays of extragalactic origin, the bounds on the quantum condensate strength, based on the gravitational Cherenkov effect, are of the same order as those from aLIGO measurements, in contrast to the case where a galactic origin of the cosmic rays is assumed, in which case the corresponding bounds are much weaker.

Abstract:The discovery of the first pulsar in a binary star system, the Hulse--Taylor pulsar, 50 years ago opened up an entirely new field of experimental gravity. For the first time it was possible to investigate strong-field and radiative aspects of the gravitational interaction. Continued observations of the Hulse--Taylor pulsar eventually led, among other confirmations of the predictions of general relativity (GR), to the first evidence for the reality of gravitational waves. In the meantime, many more radio pulsars have been discovered that are suitable for testing GR and its alternatives. One particularly remarkable binary system is the Double Pulsar, which has far surpassed the Hulse--Taylor pulsar in several respects. In addition, binary pulsar-white dwarf systems have been shown to be particularly suitable for testing alternative gravitational theories, as they often predict strong dipolar gravitational radiation for such asymmetric systems. A rather unique pulsar laboratory is the pulsar in a hierarchical stellar triple, that led to by far the most precise confirmation of the strong-field version of the universality of free fall. Using radio pulsars, it could be shown that additional aspects of the Strong Equivalence Principle apply to the dynamics of strongly self-gravitating bodies, like the local position and local Lorentz invariance of the gravitational interaction. So far, GR has passed all pulsar tests with flying colours, while at the same time many alternative gravity theories have either been strongly constrained or even falsified. New telescopes, instrumentation, timing and search algorithms promise a significant improvement of the existing tests and the discovery of (qualitatively) new, more relativistic binary systems.
