Abstract:According to the Transcendentalist beliefs proposed by great American thinker Ralph Waldo Emerson in the mid-19th century, this article carries out a detailed analysis of Melville's both Anti-Transcendentalist thoughts and Transcendentalist tendency in the perspectives of Oversoul, Individualism, and Man-and-Nature relationship revealed in Moby-Dick. It also lists the reasons for Melville's complex and sophisticated attitude towards Transcendentalism in the hope of directing the critical attention to this aspect that Moby-Dick is a twisted and ambiguous interpretation of Melville's attitude towards Transcendentalism.

Abstract:Moby Dick is well acknowledged as a world masterpiece by the American author Herman Melville. This paper attempts to analyze Melville’s Moby Dick by the theory of eco-criticism. In order to better approach the American society before the 1950s, the author aims to scrutinize the novel with eco-criticism from three such aspects as nature, society and spirit so that the present society can gain some insights in preventing and solving similar problems. Divided into several parts as follows, this paper introduces Melville and Moby Dick as well as eco-criticism first and then interprets the novel via eco-criticism in three aspects, and finally ends with its realistic significance as a conclusion.

Abstract: Moby Dick , the masterpiece of Herman Melville, is a novel with the theme of the ocean. It is known as the summit of the works in the field of the relationship between man and nature. The vivid and full characters and the symbol of the relationship between man and nature in this novel are praised by the world. The main characters in the novel, Ahab, Starbuck, and Ishmael, have different attitudes towards Moby Dick and nature. Ahab, as captain, wanted to kill Moby Dick for his own selfish desires, being a representative of extreme individualism; as a devout Christian, Starbuck’s believed that man should obey nature; Ishmael, the sailor, looked at nature with a rational and equal view. This thesis will apply individualism and other relevant theories to study Moby Dick to point out the causes and results of the battle between man and nature, so that readers can better understand the confrontation between man and nature and the adverse consequences of this confrontation under the background of the novel, stimulate people’s awareness of environmental protection, and inspire human beings to respect nature and protect nature.

Abstract:This paper explores the lived philosophy of Ishmael in Herman Melville’s epic, Moby-Dick, particularly as it contrasts with Captain Ahab. Furthermore, this paper examines how Ahab’s narcissism ushers him towards death, while Ishmael’s collectivism guides him towards life. While Ahab is obsessed with himself and his goal of killing Moby Dick, which leads to his own demise, Ishmael is focused on exploring people and their respective philosophies in order to express the infinite spiritual aspects of human life. Ishmael learns from his mistakes, listens to the perspectives of others, and searches for spirituality through various religious and secular means. The form of the novel mirrors its narrator’s wide and wandering curiosity, as Ishamel shares with the reader both the narrative story of the Pequod and worldly facts about the sperm whale. The novel’s form enhances Ishamel’s actions within the story, revealing a nuanced philosophy that values human connection and curiosity. While some scholars have made claims that Ishmael’s narrative style reflects his confusion or ambiguity, this paper argues that it is actually evidence of a life-sustaining philosophy, one which eventually saves Ishmael from being swallowed by the whirlpool caused by Ahab’s pride.

Abstract:In my study of the various interpretations attributed to Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick, I have become aware of the great confusion among critics of literary symbolism and the problems involved. The facts that so much has been written on Moby Dick and that so many varied interpretations have resulted seem to indicate that Moby Dick offers a challenge to the reader and that there is a deeper and more profound meaning behind this adventure story than meets the eye. It is safe to say that no American novel has stimulated so much thinking in the realm of literary criticism as Moby Dick. My intention in this thesis is certainly not to solve the unsolvable, but to cast light upon the problems as they have been discussed by literary critics. I intend to present the problems of interpretation and the various interpretations proposed and to offer an evaluation in the light of modern-day criticism. In the first chapter, I attempt to point out concisely why there is a problem of interpretation of Moby Dick. Herman Melville does not throw light upon the correct interpretation either in the text itself or in outside sources. It seems that Melville himself did not have a clear set pattern of symbols while writing the book, but he seemed to have developed various symbols as he was in the process of writing his novel. In the second chapter, I have outlined the most important interpretations proposed by Melvillean scholars, arranging them in three main categories; namely, allegorical, non-allegorical symbolical, and non-allegorical non-symbolical. After each interpretation I have given an evaluation in view of my own personal interpretation, the basis of which is directed by a closer study of the text of Moby Dick itself. In the third chapter, I have considered outside sources which possibly might have influenced Melville in his writing of the book. These evidences consist mostly of conclusions arrived at by scholars who delved into the sources of Moby Dick which are basically autobiographical and literary. I have used those items which would support the interpretation given in the final chapter. In the fourth chapter, I have presented a reading of Moby Dick, based on my personal reading of the book and the study done by the most important Melvillean scholars. The conclusion arrived in this thesis is that Moby Dick is a tragedy woven into an exciting sea adventure. The hero is Captain Ahab, whose downfall is his excessive pride which produces a senseless monomania about a \dumb brute.\ As for the symbolism in the book, the reader is free to interpret the various symbols as he is inspired by the actual reading of the story, except where Melville is explicit in the presentation of certain symbols in the actual text itself.

Abstract:Three of Herman Melville's works (Redburn, Moby-Dick, Pierre) are approached as related works of art--a triptych. The sustained application of images, symbols, concepts and themes links the works together. The development and intensification of themes introduced in the first panel is traced through the triptych. Colour symbolism is considered of importance, providing one of several strong connections between the independent works. The main theme, the quest for truth, which runs through the three panels and which is metaphorically presented in three separate voyages, is kept in the foreground; it is linked to an allegory of the biblical banishment of the son by the father, Melville's use of the Bible as a source of ideas, symbols and themes is given ample consideration. Influence on Melville's work from autobiographical, as well as from social, religious and/or political directions is regarded as an important agent in the shaping of Melville's mind and spirit. The thesis concludes that, despite the blackness of despair that flow through the triptych and Melville's personal nihilistic outlook, life, in the end, triumphs.

Abstract:Moby Dick, one of Herman Melville’s masterpieces, has received tremendous concern for its profound and multiple symbolic and metaphoric meanings. And the pervasive biblical terms and allusions deserve particular attention. This paper, based on Frye's archetypal theory, studies Moby Dick from the perspective of biblical archetypal criticism. The association between the characters and their biblical archetypes helps to reproduce the ancient matrix of The Bible, such as the crime of human beings, themes of sin, the fall, and redemption. The exploration of the biblical archetypal theme in Moby Dick provides us a new perspective to understand the profound significance of the novel. Melville reveals the opposition between good and evil in human beings and shows his contradictory religious outlook as well as his spiritual reflections of his time.

Abstract:“Captain Deleuze and the White Whale: Melville, Moby‐Dick, and the Cartographic Inclination”; Herman Melville is usually viewed as one of the United States's darker, more brooding authors, but Deleuze, in his many scattered comments on him, finds a strikingly different figure. Clearly Deleuze feels a strong kinship with this 19th‐century writer, and he seems to find in Melville a perspective that is at some distance from the Melville currently configured by the American academy. This essay reads parts of The Fold and A Thousand Plateaus through a lens provided by Melville, specifically the Melville of Moby‐Dick, arguing that a complex notion of the fold provides a central feature of both authors, concept of human agency.

Abstract:The nineteenth-century novels of Herman Melville, in their exploration of the theme of the conflict of man's godlike aspirations with his all-too-human limitations, anticipate the twentieth-century psychoanalytic understanding of narcissism, as developed by Sigmund Freud and Hans Kohut, specifically its psychodynamic model of the ego ideal in conflict with reality and the finiteness of human life. Captain Ahab in Moby-Dick is a vivid portrait of a narcissistic character, while Captain Vere in Billy Budd stands as a model of the "transformations of narcissism" in a mature individual. Melville's imaginative fiction is still capable of giving us valuable insights into the human condition.

Abstract:This project relies on two main bodies of work: the text and reception history of MobyDick. I argue that the novel’s prophetic insights unfold in its failure and resurrection. The reception history consists of early reviewers, biographers, and critics both hailing and discounting Moby-Dick’s literary value. The first section, “Proto-Modernist Melville: Specific Difficulty in Moby-Dick,” explores the peculiar difficulty inherent in the text of Moby-Dick, namely its divergent, evasive, and hieroglyphic properties. Chapter 2, “Reception: NineteenthCentury Failure and Modernist Success,” chronicles the novel’s reception history, focusing largely on the critics of twentieth-century modernism. In “Moby-Dick as Prophetic Anticipation and Fulfillment,” I examine the link between the inherent difficulty found within Moby-Dick and its reception history. I propose that Melville’s novel theorizes its prophetic anticipation of literary modernism as well as Melville’s own authorial failure and redemption narrative. Abstract:Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick addresses the eternal problem of life and death, the human personality and its place in the universe. It is an exceptional piece of work about the tragic tension of the worldview, the sharpness of the material presented in it, and the most important role in this is played by antonymous linguistic means. The authors of the article present a comparative analysis of the linguistic means of the original text of the parable novel and its Russian translation with respect to the use of antonyms. The material of the article makes it possible to realize the role of the translator I. Bernstein in transposition of verbalizers of art values of the American literature on Russian soil, reveals its creative individuality and professionalism. Understanding the functional and stylistic importance of the antonymous component of the novel, in his translation I. Bernstein retains the most important in terms of content and style of this work a pair of lexical antonyms of the contradicting type: “Light — Darkness”, “Black — White”, “Tall — Short”, “God — Devil”, “Life — Death”. Contextual antonyms, word-forming antonymous pairs, metaphors based on antonyms available in the original text also have equivalents in the Russian version. Comparative analysis of the original text and the Russian version clearly shows that I. Bernstein’s translation is equivalent and adequate. The stylistic peculiarities of G. Melville’s novel “Moby Dick”, connected with the use of antonymic possibilities and conditioned by contradictory philosophical problems solved in the work, are preserved in the Russian version of the novel.

Abstract:Abstract Questioning the well-known interpretation of the Pequod as a microcosm, this article focuses on passages in Melville’s Moby-Dick; Or, The Whale in which the ship serves as an arena for testing and questioning various definitions of the ‘world.’ Starting with Ishmael’s claim that he wants to “see the world” by travelling aboard the Pequod , this article isolates different meanings of ‘world’ as they are invoked by the text – pointing to a meaning beyond the cartography of the planet earth. As will be shown, Moby-Dick distinguishes between the extrinsic perspective on planet earth, as cartography applies it, and contrasts it with a level, intrinsic perspectives that one adopts standing on the deck of a ship, looking out on the ocean. The intrinsic perspective can furthermore be related to the object of Ahab’s hunt, the white whale, which carries another understanding of ‘world’ as a deep space that cannot be grasped by cartography. In a final step, the crew and its composition of international members will be analyzed by focusing on the metaphor of the “common continent of men,” which surprisingly raises serious doubts about the unity of the Pequod ’s crew.

Abstract:Phrenology has a fascinating, although controversial, place in the history of localizationism of brain and mental functions. The 2 main proponents of phrenology were 2 German-speaking doctors, Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and Johann Spurzheim (1776-1832). According to their theory, a careful examination of skull morphology could disclose personality characters. Phrenology was initially restricted to medical circles and then diffused outside scientific societies, reaching nonscientific audiences in Europe and North America. Phrenology deeply penetrated popular culture in the 19th century and its tenets can be observed in British and American literature. Here we analyze the presence of phrenologic concepts in Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, by Herman Melville (1819-1891), one of the most prominent American writers. In his masterpiece, he demonstrates that he was familiarized with Gall and Spurzheim's writings, but referred to their theory as "semi-science" and "a passing fable." Of note, Melville's fine irony against phrenology is present in his attempt to perform a phrenologic and physiognomic examination of The Whale. Thus, Moby-Dick illustrates the diffusion of phrenology in Western culture, but may also reflect Melville's skepticism and criticism toward its main precepts.
