Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated a zoom optical system with variable magnification based on the tunable polymer lens. The designed system mainly consists of two polymer lenses, voice coil motors, a doublet lens and CMOS chip. The zoom magnification can be adjusted by altering the focal length of the two elastic polymer lenses synergistically through controlling the output displacement of the voice coil motor. A static doublet lens in combination with the polymer lenses stabilize the image plane at the CMOS chip. The optical structure of the zoom system is presented, as well as a detailed description including the lens materials and fabrication process. Images with each zoom magnification are captured, and the Spot diagram and MTF are simulated using Zemax software. A change in magnification from 0.13×to 8.44×is demonstrated within the tiny 0.4 mm variation of the displacement load, and produce a 16.1×full range of magnification experimentally. Simulation analyses show that all the radii of the spot diagram under different magnifications are less than 11.3 um, and the modulation transfer function reaches 107 line pairs per mm. The designed optical system shows the potential for developing stable, integrated, and low-cost zoom systems with large magnification range.

Abstract:We propose a triple-layer spherical electrowetting liquid lens with large-aperture and high zoom ratio. The chamber of the proposed lens is spherical, which can enlarge the apparent contact angle range. The triple-layer liquid consists of a conductive liquid, an insulating liquid and a conductive liquid in turn, which forms two independent liquid-liquid (L-L) interfaces. We simulated and analyzed the geometric location of the L-L interfaces to ensure that the two liquid-liquid interfaces do not fuse under the requirement of compact design. The two L-L interfaces are symmetrically distributed on the upper and lower hemispheres of the spherical chamber and can be changed the surface shapes at the same time. The experimental results show that the zoom ratio of our proposed lens is 4.12. And the focal length can be changed from −35.2 mm to 51.1 mm under 0–80 V applied voltage, and has two focal segments according to different working electrodes. 8 mm clear aperture and 6 mm total liquid thickness mean that the triple-layer spherical electrowetting liquid lens can be pretty compact and has a great application prospect in imaging systems, such as microscopic imaging system, etc.

Abstract:The large field projection lithography lens is a special optical lenses form,which put an high demands on the design and processing both for mechanical and optical.In this presentation,based on the lithography lenses which can be used to exposure an 8 inch wafer by one step, we analyzed the various factors which may cause the image quality deterioration of the optical system especially for this type of lenses,by ZEMAX simulation we set the tolerance both for optical parts and mechanical parts,also the procedures of the adjustment and assembly for the whole lenses are described.By testing the resolution and distortion of this lenses,we found that the completed projection lenses reach the design specification.
Design and testing of optical inspection lens with large-field and high resolution

Abstract:The optical lens with features of large-field, high resolution and small distortion were designed for industrial inspection purpose. The inspection objective and illumination system were combined together, and the process of aberration correction and optimization were performed on the entire system by ZEMAX optical design software. By transferring the dark or bright stop in the illumination system according to the application cases, practical resolution of the objective could be slightly adjusted. Including the features described above, optical lens with the specification of 2.35 magnifying power was designed. Tolerance analysis and external mechanical design were performed based on the optical design, and the lens was finally assembled. The modulation transfer function (MTF) testing system was set up and the image quality of the assembled lens was tested on it. The results show that the tested MTF value reaches 80% of the design value.

Abstract:Abstract The electrowetting lenses has attracted researchers in many fields, such as biology, beam shaping, and drug delivery. Previous research on electrowetting lens has focused on neither expanding the dynamic focal length range nor reducing the wavefront aberration. However, the properties with large numerical aperture and low aberration are also essential properties of lenses, and can promote their application. Therefore, we calculated the meniscus of the lens with different optical apertures, and subsequently, analyzed the relations among the focal length, wavefront aberration, and optical aperture. To expand the focal length range, we designed an electrowetting-based triple-liquid lens with a root-mean-square wavefront aberration error of less than 1/4 waves.

Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.

Abstract:A bionic optical imaging system with an aspheric solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens was designed and fabricated. The entire system mainly consisted of a doublet lens, a solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, a connecting part, and a CCD imaging device. To mimic the structure of the crystalline lens, the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens consisted of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lens, a polymethyl methacrylate lens, and the liquid of ethyl silicone oil. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity using a microinjector, the curvatures of the front and rear surfaces of the PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change of focal length. The overall structure of the system was presented, as well as a detailed description of the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, material, and fabrication process. Under different injection volumes, the deformation of the PDMS lens was measured and simulated, pictures were captured, and the optical performance was analyzed in simulations and experiments. The focal length of the system ranged from 25.05 to 14.61 mm, and the variation of the diopter was 28.5D, which was larger than that of the human eye. Abstract:A bio-inspired optical imaging system with a polymer membrane and integrated structure is proposed. Similar to the human eye, the presented system has a biomimetic multilayered optical structure and utilizes a solid-liquid mixed tunable lens as the variable-focus unit. The focal length of the imaging system can be adjusted flexibly through the deformation of the tunable lens when it is compressed. A detailed description of the design principle, materials and fabrication process of the system is presented. The deformation property, adjustable range and surface roughness of the tunable lens are measured. Images under different displacement loads are captured, and the relationships among the back focal length (BFL) and effective focal length (EFL) of the system and the change in radius of the tunable lens are analyzed. A 7.6 times variation of the BFL is achieved through a tiny alteration in radius of 1.2 mm. All the measured resolutions during the deformation stage are larger than 40 line pairs mm-1, and the imaging system shows good optical quality and stability. The proposed optical system is of interest for the development of compact and stable imaging systems with a large zooming range.
An Electrically Tunable Zoom System Using Liquid Lenses

Abstract:A four-group stabilized zoom system using two liquid lenses and two fixed lens groups is proposed. We describe the design principle, realization, and the testing of a 5.06:1 zoom system. The realized effective focal length (EFL) range is 6.93 mm to 35.06 mm, and the field of view (FOV) range is 8 degrees to 40 degrees. The system can zoom fast when liquid lens 1's (L-1's) optical power take the value from 0.0087 mm(-1) to 0.0192 mm(-1) and liquid lens 2's (L-2's) optical power take the value from 0.0185 mm(-1) to -0.01 mm(-1). Response time of the realized zoom system was less than 2.5 ms, and the settling time was less than 15 ms.The analysis of elements' parameters and the measurement of lens performance not only verify the design principle further, but also show the zooming process by the use of two liquid lenses. The system is useful for motion carriers e.g., robot, ground vehicle, and unmanned aerial vehicles considering that it is fast, reliable, and miniature.

Abstract:A novel self-centered variable focus liquid lens based on electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) is presented, which consists of a glass plate coated with two transparent layers of conductive ITO film and hydrophobic dielectric film, a conical tube partly covered with hydrophobic film positioned with a gap above the glass plate and a water droplet. By changing the voltage applied to the droplet and the ITO control electrode, both the position and curvature of the meniscus between the two immiscible fluids can be reversibly adjusted, thus realizing a lens of variable focal length. The experimental results show that the prototype of the liquid lens with 50 V power supply is able to focus on objects from 2 centimeters up to infinity away with good imaging quality.

Abstract:Multifunctional integration is the development direction of electrowetting liquid lenses. We propose an electrowetting liquid lens integrating adaptive liquid iris (ELL-LI) with adjustable radial aperture and axial position. The liquid iris and the liquid lens are both driven by electrowetting on dielectric and integrated in the same chamber together, and share the same conductive liquid part. The liquid iris does not need the flat support of a traditional liquid iris. The aperture can change from 1.16 to 5.11 mm. The iris can move up and down in the axial direction, according to different working electrodes on the side wall. Experiments show that our proposed ELL-LI has the functions of depth of field expansion and field adjustment, which has a great application prospect in imaging systems, such as camera imaging systems, etc.

Optical System Design of Continuous Zoom Objective Lens with Multi-Conjugate Distances

Abstract:This paper presents an optical system of continuous zoom objective lens with multi-conjugate distances which can clearly image at multiple working distances. We firstly design a continuous zoom objective lens with a standard working distance, then optimize it with multiple conjugate distances. When the working distance changes, adjust the position of the image sensor accordingly to achieve clear imaging. The final designed optical system has a working distance range from 65mm to 130mm which can realize a continuous magnification range from 0.18x to 2.65x. The objective lens system can match a 1/2-inch image sensor, and the image sensor can move 16mm relative to the lens. The design results show that the MTF curves for each magnification and working distance are close to the diffraction limit and the imaging performance is good for each configuration. Compared with the conventional continuous zoom objective lens with a fixed working distance, the working distance range of the continuous zoom objective lens with multi-conjugate distances is wider and the zoom ratio is further expanded, which can better meet the requirements of different application scenarios.

Abstract:An electromagnetic-driving variable liquid aperture is designed and fabricated. It consists of a driving cavity, an optical cavity and a storage chamber, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastic film, an annular magnet and a driving coil. The driving cavity is filled with dyeing liquid, while the colorless transparent liquid fills the optical cavity and the storage chamber. When applying current, the annular magnet moves downward driven by the magnetic field, leading to deformation of the PDMS film. Being squeezed by the moving magnet with the deforming film, the dyeing liquid flows from the driving cavity into the optical cavity, which contributes to the decrease of the clear aperture diameter in the optical cavity. Our proposed aperture performs continuous variable ability up to 2.775 mm in diameter of clear aperture, when the current increases from 0 to 0.33 A, and its relative transmittance ranges from 98.539% to 22.776%.

The variable-focus liquid microlens based on electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD), which has the outstanding advantages of simple structures, low power dissipation, easily tunable of focal length, etc. , is most attractive. A new type of microlens capable of adjusting its focal length and lateral position is demonstrated.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.
Dynamically Tunable Hemispherical Electronic Eye Camera System with Adjustable Zoom Capability

Abstract:Imaging systems that exploit arrays of photodetectors in curvilinear layouts are attractive due to their ability to match the strongly nonplanar image surfaces (i.e., Petzval surfaces) that form with simple lenses, thereby creating new design options. Recent work has yielded significant progress in the realization of such "eyeball" cameras, including examples of fully functional silicon devices capable of collecting realistic images. Although these systems provide advantages compared to those with conventional, planar designs, their fixed detector curvature renders them incompatible with changes in the Petzval surface that accompany variable zoom achieved with simple lenses. This paper describes a class of digital imaging device that overcomes this limitation, through the use of photodetector arrays on thin elastomeric membranes, capable of reversible deformation into hemispherical shapes with radii of curvature that can be adjusted dynamically, via hydraulics. Combining this type of detector with a similarly tunable, fluidic plano-convex lens yields a hemispherical camera with variable zoom and excellent imaging characteristics. Systematic experimental and theoretical studies of the mechanics and optics reveal all underlying principles of operation. This type of technology could be useful for night-vision surveillance, endoscopic imaging, and other areas that require compact cameras with simple zoom optics and wide-angle fields of view.

Abstract:A variable-focus liquid lens based on EWOD (electrowetting on dielectric) has been developed. It comprises a top glass plate, a ground-electrode-involved bottom glass plate and a counter-electrode-involved cylindrical glass housing which contains two immiscible fluids of air and water with different refractive indices. By changing the applied voltage across the electrodes, we can tune the meniscus between the two fluids and focus length of the lens. Abstract:A novel configuration of variable-focus liquid lens based on an electrowetting-on-dielectric technique is presented,which consists of a glass slide coated with a conductive Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) film,a hydrophobic dielectric film,a hollow conical metal ring suspended right above a gap between the slide and the ring,and the lens liquid (water). By changing the voltage applied to a grounded metal ring and a ITO control electrode,both the position and curvature of the liquid meniscus can be reversibly adjusted,and the focal length of the lens can be tuned. The shapes of the suspended ring in the present work are also designed to self-center the lens liquid,then influences of different shapes of the suspended rings on the variation of optical power of the meniscus are discussed. Experimental results show that the liquid lens at a good imaging quality is able to focus on objects away from 2.5 cm up to infinity at a 40 V power supply and also able to offer the variation range of the optical power up to 40 m-1. Because of the properties such as low consumption,small sizes and high reversibility and so on,the demonstrated configuration provides great advantages in the field of microlens.
