Abstract:Tailoring pulses with intertwined spatial and temporal degrees of freedom is a promising research area that offers applications in nonlinear optics, precision machining, and imaging to mention a few. The key requirement for harnessing such spatiotemporal light structures in their entirety is to accurately discern their physical properties. Here, we demonstrate that ptychography can be applied to reveal the modal, frequency, and temporal attributes of such ultrafast spatiotemporal optical pulses. To demonstrate the potential of our scheme, we examine optical fields with intricate spatial and spectrotemporal correlations. Further, since the exact structure of the pulses is determined utilizing purely linear interactions, our approach can serve to probe and correct a great variety of spatiotemporal designs.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to characterize the temporal structure of arbitrary optical laser pulses with low pulse energies. This approach is based on strong field photoelectron holography with the glory rescattering effect as the underlying mechanism in the near-forward direction. Utilizing the subfemtosecond glory rescattering process as a fast temporal gate to sample the unknown light pulse, the time-dependent vectorial electric field can be retrieved from the streaking photoelectron momentum spectra. Our method avoids the challenging task of generation or manipulation of attosecond pulses and signifies important progress in arbitrary optical waveform characterization.

Abstract:The measurement of optical ultrafast laser pulses is done indirectly because the required bandwidth to measure these pulses exceeds the bandwidth of current electronics. As a result, this measurement problem is often posed as a 1-D phase retrieval problem, which is fraught with ambiguities. The phase retrieval method known as ptychography solves this problem by making it possible to measure ultrafast pulses in either the time domain or the frequency domain. One well known algorithm is the principal components generalized projections algorithm (PCGPA) for extracting pulses from Frequency-Resolved Optical Gating (FROG) measurements. Here, we discuss the development of the PCPGA and introduce new developments including an operator formalism that allows for the convenient addition of external constraints and the development of more robust algorithms. A close cousin, the ptychographic iterative engine will also be covered and compared to the PCGPA. Additional developments using other algorithmic strategies will also be discussed along with new developments combining optics and high-speed electronics to achieve megahertz measurement rates.

Abstract:Comprehending the unique characteristics of structured ultrafast optical pulses is essential to the physics, applications and instrumentations of ultrafast lasers. However, full-vectrorial characterizations of the pulses remain challenging because of their multiple degrees of freedom. In this work, we implement and demonstrate the vectorial interferometric polarimeter for electric-field reconstruction (VIPER) which, for the first time, is able to precisely determine the specific three-dimensional E-field at every spatial-temporal coordinate throughout the entire detection region. This metrology provides a powerful tool for advanced ultrafast optics and paves the way for design optimization of ultrafast optics by providing the full information of the pulses, facilitating its applications in optical physics research, pump-probe spectroscopy and laser-based manufacturing.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags ( x, y, z : space; t : time of arrival; and ψ : angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium.

Extending the capabilities of vectorial ptychography to circular-polarizing materials such as cholesteric liquid crystals

Abstract:The problem of imaging materials with circular polarization properties is discussed within the framework of vectorial ptychography. We demonstrate, both theoretically and numerically, that using linear polarizations to investigate such materials compromises the unicity of the solution provided by this computational method. To overcome this limitation, an improved measurement approach is proposed, which involves specific combinations of elliptical polarizations. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated by numerical simulations and experimental measurements on cholesteric liquid crystals films, which possess unique polarization properties. With the help of Pauli matrices algebra, our results highlight the technique's ability to discern between different types of circular polarizers, uniform vs. non-uniform, and determine their handedness.

TIGER: TIme-Gated Electric field Reconstruction

Abstract:We present a novel self-referenced method for the complete temporal characterization (phase and amplitude) of ultrashort optical laser pulses. The technique, called TIme-Gated Electric field Reconstruction (TIGER), measures a second-order nonlinear signal (namely, second harmonic generation or two-photon absorption) produced by four time-delayed replicas of the input pulse. The delays are spatially encoded in the beam profile using a four-faced pyramid-like optical element. The presented technique enables single shot measurement and does not require any spectral measurements, in contrast with well-known self-referenced characterization methods. Depending on the chosen geometry, the recorded TIGER signal can be either interferometric (i.e., carrier frequency resolved) or intensimetric. This paper describes the principle operation of the device together with a detailed theoretical analysis. TIGER measurements of various laser pulse shapes with their reconstructions are then presented demonstrating the relevance of this original approach.

Abstract:Polarization is a property of vector beam that is widely used in many areas of science and technology. And vector beam is also called polarization vortex beam. Radially polarized beam and azimuthally polarized beam are the paradigm of vector beam. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) vector beam could be applied in many fields such as diffractive imaging, Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL), or ultrafast control of magnetic properties. In our experiments, a home-made EUV spectrometer was used to generate a tunable ultrafast EUV coherent light source based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) by intense femtosecond laser. The apparatus features by using the plane grating in conical diffraction. The radially polarized vector beam and Gaussian beam with 800 nm, 35 fs laser pulses were applied to interact with Argon atoms, respectively. The high harmonic spectrums with a polarization singularity and a Gaussian distribution were observed. The experimental results demonstrate that the EUV vector beam could be transfered from near-infrared driven laser during the highly nonlinear interaction. The short-wavelength radiation with a polarization singularity can reach a photon flux of 108 per second. And the harmonic orders produced by Gaussian beam are significantly higher than that of vector field. The mechanism of macroscopic phase matching was discussed. It indicates that the phase matching for vector harmonic yields is similar with that driven by a Gaussian beam. In this case, EUV vector beam through HHG has been obtained, which provides one important method for attosecond vector pulses and opens new possibilities for exploring and manipulating the time-dependent evolution of quantum states in atom and molecule.

Abstract:Vector modes are fully polarized modes of light with spatially varying polarization distributions, and they have found widespread use in numerous applications such as microscopy, metrology, optical trapping, nanophotonics, and communications. The entanglement of such modes has attracted significant interest, and it has been shown to have tremendous potential in expanding existing applications and enabling new ones. However, due to the complex spatially varying polarization structure of entangled vector modes (EVMs), a complete entanglement characterization of these modes remains challenging and time consuming. Here, we have used a time-tagging event camera to demonstrate the ability to completely characterize the entanglement of EVMs. Leveraging the camera's capacity to provide independent measurements for each pixel, we simultaneously characterize the entanglement of approximately 2.6×106 modes between a bipartite EVM through measuring only 16 observables in polarization. We reveal that EVMs can naturally generate various polarization-entangled Bell states. This achievement is an important milestone in high-dimensional entanglement characterization of structured light, and it could significantly impact the implementation of related quantum technologies. The potential applications of this technique are extensive, and it could pave the way for advancements in quantum communication, quantum imaging, and other areas where structured entangled photons play a crucial role. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.063802 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Time-of-flight (ToF) non-line-of-sight (NLoS) imaging reconstructs images of scenes with light that have undergone diffuse reflections. While, in the past, ToF light propagation and reconstruction methods have been described using their own inverse methods, it has recently been shown that ToF light transport can be described as the propagation of a wave, allowing it to be modeled by the same methods that are applied for direct imaging with electromagnetic or sound waves. This wave of fluctuating optical irradiance is called the phasor field (P-field) wave. Here, we perform a series of experiments to show the wave-like behavior of this P-field wave. We design a P-field source and detector and use them to demonstrate interference of P-field waves in a double slit experiment, as well as mutually-independent focusing and imaging of P-field waves and their optical carrier. Besides establishing the properties of P-field waves, our work demonstrates that imaging of ToF signals is possible without any computation enabling fast and energy-efficient NLoS imaging systems.

Fast Partial Fourier Transforms for Large-Scale Ptychography

Abstract:Ptychography is a popular imaging technique that combines diffractive imaging with scanning microscopy. The technique consists of a coherent beam that is scanned across an object in a series of overlapping positions, leading to reliable and improved reconstructions. Ptychographic microscopes allow for large fields to be imaged at high resolution at additional computational expense. In this work, we explore the use of the fast Partial Fourier Transforms (PFTs), which efficiently compute Fourier coefficients corresponding to low frequencies. The core idea is to use the PFT in a plug-and-play manner to warm-start existing ptychography algorithms such as the ptychographic iterative engine (PIE). This approach reduces the computational budget required to solve the ptychography problem. Our numerical results show that our scheme accelerates the convergence of traditional solvers without sacrificing quality of reconstruction.

Abstract:<p>A novel stress vector measurement method combining ptychography and polarization technologies is proposed. By placing the stress sample in the probe-forming path and combining two circular polariscopes with a beamsplitter, the complex amplitudes of two orthogonal probe components are reconstructed under a single ptychographic scan. Three parameters are extracted with a simple and effective approach, where the isopachics and isoclinics are directly obtained from the phase information and the solution of isochromatics is easily realized by the combination of amplitude and phase. The feasibility of stress vector measurement is successfully verified through a classic diametrically compressed disc and a ring under diametric compression. This method avoids multiple scans, and has short data acquisition and reconstruction time and good adaptability for large samples. It can be further combined with single-shot ptychographical method to realize the dynamic measurement, which has great significance for online engineering applications.</p>

Abstract:We propose a simple and effective method for generating a vector light field based on the faithful reconstruction (FR) effect of polarization holography, where the arbitrary linear polarization waves can be faithfully reconstructed by the polarization-sensitive recording media. The scheme incorporates the tunable and switchable dynamics exposure system to manufacture vector beams. By regulating the velocity and the initial polarization through the angle-aperture and the half-wave plate in the dynamics exposure system, the generated optical element can convert a linear polarization wave into a vector beam. We have analyzed the feasibility in theory and demonstrated the generation of the vector beams experimentally which shows good agreement with the theoretical simulations.

Abstract:Optical time stretch has been employed for ultrafast optical imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping. However, temporal overlap between two adjacent time-stretched pulses is a disadvantageous factor that limits the spatial resolution, or the frame rate has to be reduced by reducing the pulse repetition rate to avoid the temporal overlap. To increase the spatial resolution without reducing the frame rate, we propose a novel technique based on polarization-division multiplexing, using a polarization modulator to generate two polarization interleaved pulse trains. Since two adjacent optical pulses are orthogonally polarized, the spacing between two adjacent pulses for one polarization direction is doubled, and the spatial resolution is doubled by using a dispersive element with two times the dispersion. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. An imaging system with an increased spatial resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:The ability to measure polarisation, spectrum, temporal dynamics, and spatial amplitude and phase of optical beams is essential to study fundamental phenomena in laser dynamics, telecommunications and nonlinear optics. Current characterisation techniques only apply in limited contexts. Non-interferometric methods typically lack access to spatial phase, while phase-sensitive approaches necessitate either an auxiliary reference source or an adequate self-reference, neither of which is universally available. Regardless of the reference, deciphering complex wavefronts of multiple co-propagating incoherent fields remains particularly challenging. Here, we harness the principles of quantum state tomography to circumvent these limitations. A full description of an unknown beam is retrieved by measuring its temporally and spectrally resolved density matrices for both polarisations, using a spatial light modulator to display projective holograms and a single-mode fibre to guide the collected signal to a high-speed photodiode and a spectrometer. Despite no spatial resolution of the detector and the intensity-only character of the collected signal, the method resolves multiple arbitrary spatial fields within a single beam, including their phase and amplitude, as well as their spatial coherence. Leveraging the coherence information unlocks unambiguous determination of the spectral and temporal evolution of mutually incoherent fields, even when these spectrally overlap or have an identical time delay. We demonstrate these hallmark features by characterising the rich spatiotemporal and spectral output of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diode that has so far resisted full analysis using existing techniques.
