Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to survey some topics on mathematical foundations of quantum information developed mainly by the present author and co-workers for the last three decades. The topics include an axiomatic construction of quantum measurement theory based on completely positive map-valued measures, a universally valid new formulation of the uncertainty principle for error and disturbance in quantum measurements, the Wigner-Araki-Yanase limit of quantum measurements, the accuracy limit of quantum computing based on conservation laws, and a quantum interpretation based on quantum set theory.

Abstract:We present criteria for comparing measurements on a given system from the point of view of the information they provide. These criteria lead to a concept ofinformational completeness of a set of observables, which generalizes the conventional concept of completeness. The entropy of a state with respect to an arbitrary sample space of potential measurement outcomes is defined, and then studied in the context of configuration space and fuzzy stochastic phase space.

Abstract:We take the view that physical quantities are values generated by processes in measurement, not pre-existent objective quantities, and that a measurement result is strictly a product of the apparatus and the subject of the measurement. We habitually make an inaccurate statements when we speak of the measurement of a quantity by an apparatus. These statements can be formalised as a many valued logic with the structure of a vector space with a hermitian form in such a way as to generate probabilities in the results of measurement. The difference between this and classical probability theory is that we are not finding probabilities generated by unknown variables, but probabilities generated by unknown structure. We thus interpret quantum logic as the application of complex truth values to statements in an inaccurate language, and find that the properties of vector space hold for approximate measurement as well as for measurement of optimal accuracy, suggesting that Planck's constant governs the scale of the fundamental structures of matter.

Abstract:A framework for a quantum information theory is introduced that is based on the measure of quantum information associated with probability distribution predicted by quantum measuring of state. The entanglement between states of measured system and "pointer" states of measuring apparatus, which is generated by dynamical process of quantum measurement, plays a dominant role in expressing quantum characteristics of information theory. The quantum mutual information of transmission and reception of quantum states along a noisy quantum channel is given by the change of quantum measured information. In our approach, it is not necessary to purify the transmitted state by means of the reference system. It is also clarified that there exist relations between the approach given in this letter and those given by other authors.

Abstract:We introduce a class of informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures which are, in analogy with a tight frame, "as close as possible" to orthonormal bases for the space of quantum states. These measures are distinguished by an exceptionally simple state-reconstruction formula which allows "painless" quantum state tomography. Complete sets of mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measures are both members of this class, the latter being the unique minimal rank-one members. Recast as ensembles of pure quantum states, the rank-one members are in fact equivalent to weighted 2-designs in complex projective space. These measures are shown to be optimal for quantum cloning and linear quantum state tomography.

Abstract:Starting from a simple estimation problem, here we propose a general approach for decoding quantum measurements from the perspective of information extraction. By virtue of the estimation fidelity only, we provide surprisingly simple characterizations of rank-1 projective measurements, mutually unbiased measurements, and symmetric informationally complete measurements. Notably, our conclusions do not rely on any assumption on the rank, purity, or the number of measurement outcomes, and we do not need bases to start with. Our work demonstrates that all these elementary quantum measurements are uniquely determined by their information-extraction capabilities, which are not even anticipated before. In addition, we offer a new perspective for understanding noncommutativity and incompatibility from tomographic performances, which also leads to a universal criterion for detecting quantum incompatibility. Furthermore, we show that the estimation fidelity can be used to distinguish inequivalent mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete measurements. In the course of study, we introduce the concept of (weighted complex projective) 1/2-designs and show that all 1/2-designs are tied to symmetric informationally complete measurements, and vice versa.

Abstract:We provide an introduction to the theory of quantum measurements that is centered on the pivotal role played by John von Neumann's model. This introduction is accessible to students and researchers from outside the field of foundations of quantum mechanics and presented within a historical context. We first explain the origins and the meaning of the measurement problem in quantum theory, and why it is not present in classical physics. We perform a chronological review of the quantization of action and explain how this led to successive restrictions on what could be measured in atomic phenomena, until the consolidation of the orthodox interpretation of quantum mechanics. The clear separation between quantum system and classical apparatus that causes these restrictions is subverted in von Neumann's paradigmatic model of quantum measurements, a subject whose concepts we explain, while also providing the mathematical tools necessary to apply it to new problems. We show how this model was important in discussing the interpretations of quantum mechanics and how it is still relevant in modern applications. In particular, we explain in detail how it can be used to describe weak measurements and the surprising results they entail. We also discuss the limitations of von Neumann's model of measurements, and explain how they can be overcome with POVMs and Kraus operators. We provide the mathematical tools necessary to work with these generalized measurements and to derive master equations from them. Finally, we demonstrate how these can be applied in research problems by calculating the Quantum Zeno Effect.

Abstract:A new approach to the problem of measurement in quantum mechanics is proposed. In this approach, the process of measurement is described in the Heisenberg picture and divided into two stages. The first stage is to transduce the measured observable to the probe observable. The second stage is to amplify the probe observable to the macroscopic meter observable. Quantum state reduction is derived, based on the quantum Bayes principle, from the object-apparatus interaction in the first stage. The dynamical process of the second stage is described as a quantum amplification with infinite gain based on nonstandard analysis.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics is a cornerstone of our current understanding of nature and extremely successful in describing physics covering a huge range of scales. However, its interpretation remains controversial since the early days of quantum mechanics. What does a quantum state really mean? Is there any way out of the so-called quantum measurement problem? Here we present an information-complete quantum theory (ICQT) and the trinary property of nature to beat the above problems. We assume that a quantum system's state provides an information-complete description of the system in the trinary picture. We give a consistent formalism of quantum theory that makes the information-completeness explicitly and argue that conventional quantum mechanics is an approximation of the ICQT. We then show how our ICQT provides a coherent picture and fresh angle of some existing problems in physics. The computational content of our theory is uncovered by defining an information-complete quantum computer.

Abstract:Information-Theoretical restrictions on the systems self-descriptions are applied to Quantum Measurements Theory. For the quantum object S measurement by information system O such restrictions are described by the restricted states formalism by Breuer. The analogous restrictions obtained in Algebraic QM from the analysis of Segal algebra U of O observables; O restricted states set is defined as U dual space. From Segal theorem for the associative subalgebra it's shown that such states describe the random pointer outcomes observed by O in the individual events.

Abstract:We present a general theory of quantum information processing devices, that can be applied to human decision makers, to atomic multimode registers, or to molecular high-spin registers. Our quantum decision theory is a generalization of the quantum theory of measurement, endowed with an action ring, a prospect lattice and a probability operator measure. The algebra of probability operators plays the role of the algebra of local observables. Because of the composite nature of prospects and of the entangling properties of the probability operators, quantum interference terms appear, which make actions noncommutative and the prospect probabilities non-additive. The theory provides the basis for explaining a variety of paradoxes typical of the application of classical utility theory to real human decision making. The principal advantage of our approach is that it is formulated as a self-consistent mathematical theory, which allows us to explain not just one effect but actually all known paradoxes in human decision making. Being general, the approach can serve as a tool for characterizing quantum information processing by means of atomic, molecular, and condensed-matter systems.

Abstract:Quantum theory famously entails the existence of incompatible measurements, pairs of system observables which cannot be simultaneously measured to arbitrary precision. Incompatibility is widely regarded to be a uniquely quantum phenomenon, linked to failure to commute of quantum operators. Even in the face of deep parallels between quantum commutators and classical Poisson brackets, no connection has been established between the Poisson algebra and any intrinsic limitations to classical measurement. Here I examine measurement in classical Hamiltonian physics as a process involving the joint evolution of an object-system and a finite-temperature measuring apparatus. Instead of the ideal measurement capable of extracting information without disturbing the system, I find a Heisenberg-like precision-disturbance relation: Measuring an observable leaves all Poisson-commuting observables undisturbed but inevitably disturbs all non-Poisson-commuting observables. In this classical uncertainty relation the role of h-bar is played by an apparatus-specific quantity, q-bar. While this is not a universal constant, the analysis suggests that q-bar takes a finite positive value for any apparatus that can be built. (Specifically: q-bar vanishes in the model only in the unreachable limit of zero absolute temperature.) I show that a classical version of Ozawa's model of quantum measurement [Ozawa, Phys. Rev. Lett. 60 , 385 (1988)], originally proposed as a means to violate Heisenberg's relation, does not violate the classical relation. If this result were to generalize to all models of measurement, then incompatibility would prove to be a feature not only of quantum, but of classical physics too. Put differently: The approach presented here points the way to studying the (Bayesian) epistemology of classical physics, which was until now assumed to be trivial. It now seems possible that it is nontrivial and bears a resemblance to the quantum formalism. The present findings may be of interest to researchers working on foundations of quantum mechanics, particularly for ψ -epistemic interpretations. Abstract:Basic quantum information measures involved in the information analysis of quantum systems are considered. It is shown that the main quantum information measurement methods depend on whether the corresponding quantum events are compatible or incompatible. For purely quantum channels, the coherent and compatible information measures, which are qualitatively different, can be distinguished. A general information scheme is proposed for a quantum-physical experiment. In this scheme, informational optimization of an experimental setup is formulated as a mathematical problem.

Abstract:Measure theory is used in physics, not just to capture classical probability, but also to quantify the number of states. In previous works, we found that state quantification plays a foundational role in classical mechanics, and therefore, we set ourselves to construct the quantum equivalent of the Liouville measure. Unlike the classical counterpart, this quantized measure is non-additive and has a unitary lower bound (i.e. no set of states can have less than one state). Conversely, requiring that state quantification is finite for finite continuous regions and that each state counts as one already implies non-additivity, which in turn implies the failure of classical theory. In this article we show these preliminary results and outline a new line of inquiry that may provide a different insight into the foundations of quantum theory. Additionally, this new approach may prove to be useful to those interested in a quantized theory of space-time, as we believe this requires a quantized measure for the quantification of the independent degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics predicts the joint probability distributions of the outcomes of simultaneous measurements of commuting observables, but the current formulation lacks the operational definition of simultaneous measurements. In order to provide foundations of joint statistics of local general measurements on entangled systems in a general theoretical framework, the question is answered as to under what condition the outputs of two measuring apparatuses satisfy the joint probability formula for simultaneous measurements of their observables. For this purpose, all the possible state changes caused by measurements of an observable are characterized, and the notion of disturbance in measurement is formalized in terms of operations derived by the measuring interaction.

Abstract:Modal quantum theory (MQT) is a "toy model" of quantum theory in which amplitudes are elements of a general field. The theory predicts, not the probabilities of a measurement result, but only whether or not a result is possible. In this paper we review MQT and extend it to include mixed states, generalized measurements and open system dynamics. Even though MQT does not have density operators, superoperators or any concept of "positivity", we can nevertheless establish a precise analogue to the usual representation theorem for CP maps. We also embed MQT in a larger class of modal theories. We show that the possibility assignments for separate measurements on a bipartite system in MQT are always weakly consistent with some probability assignment that respects the no-signalling principle.

Abstract:To quantify single mode nonclassicality, we start from an operational approach. A positive semi-definite observable is introduced to describe a measurement setup. The quantification is based on the negativity of the normally ordered version of this observable. Perfect operational quantumness corresponds to the quantum-noise-free measurement of the chosen observable. Surprisingly, even moderately squeezed states may exhibit perfect quantumness for a properly designed measurement. The quantification is also considered from an axiomatic viewpoint, based on the algebraic structure of the quantum states and the quantum superposition principle. Basic conclusions from both approaches are consistent with this fundamental principle of the quantum world.

Abstract:We explore quantum measurement in the context of Everettian unitary quantum mechanics and construct an explicit unitary measurement procedure. We propose the existence of prior correlated states that enable this procedure to work and therefore argue that correlation is a resource that is consumed when measurements take place. It is also argued that a network of such measurements establishes a stable objective classical reality.

Abstract:The topic of measurement in relativistic quantum field theory is addressed in this article. Some of the long standing problems of this subject are highlighted, including the incompatibility of an instantaneous ``collapse of the wavefunction'' with relativity of simultaneity, and the difficulty of maintaining causality in the rules for measurement highlighted by ``impossible measurement'' scenarios. Thereafter, the issue is considered from the perspective of mathematical physics. To this end, quantum field theory is described in a model-independent, operator algebraic setting, on generic Lorentzian spacetime manifolds. The process of measurement is modelled by a localized dynamical coupling between a quantum field called the ``system'', and another quantum field, called the ``probe''. The result of the dynamical coupling is a scattering map, whereby measurements carried out on the probe can be interpreted as measurements of induced observables on the system. The localization of the dynamical coupling allows it to derive causal relations for the induced observables. It will be discussed how this approach leads to the concept of selective or non-selective system state updates conditioned on the result of probe measurements, which in turn allows it to obtain conditional probabilities for consecutive probe measurements consistent with relativistic causality and general covariance, without the need for a physical collapse of the wavefunction. In particular, the problem of impossible measurements is resolved. Finally, there is a brief discussion of accelerated detectors and other related work.
