Abstract:Transition metal carbides have been studied extensively as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but they suffer from sluggish lithium reaction kinetics and large volume expansion. Herein, a hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite has been synthesized through a rational pyrolysis strategy, and evaluated as an anode material with enhanced lithium storage properties for LIBs. In the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite, large numbers of Mo2C nanosheets with a thickness of 40-100 nm are uniformly anchored onto/into carbon nanosheet matrices. This unique hierarchical architecture can provide favorable ion and electron transport pathways and alleviate the volume change of Mo2C during cycling. As a consequence, the hierarchical Mo2C/C nanosheet composite exhibits high-performance lithium storage with a reversible capacity of up to 868.6 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1), as well as a high rate capacity of 541.8 mA h g(-1) even at 5.0 A g(-1). More importantly, this hierarchical composite demonstrates impressive cyclability with a capacity retention efficiency of 122.1% over 5000 successive cycles at 5.0 A g(-1), which surpasses the cycling properties of most other Mo2C-based materials reported to date.

Abstract:Layered stacking and highly porous N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets are prepared from a stable Mo-enhanced hydrogel. The hydrogel is formed through the ultrafast cross-linking of phosphomolybdic acid and chitosan. During the reduction of the composite hydrogel framework under inert gas protection, highly porous N and P co-doped carbon nanosheets are produced with the in situ formation of ultrafine Mo2 C nanoparticles highly distributed throughout the nanosheets which are entangled via a hierarchical lamellar infrastructure. This unique architecture of the N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets tremendously promote the electrochemical activity and operate stability with high specific capacity and extremely stable cycling. In particular, this versatile synthetic strategy can also be extended to other polyoxometalate (such as phosphotungstic acid) to provide greater opportunities for the controlled fabrication of novel hierarchical nanostructures for next-generation high performance energy storage applications.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:A uniformly coated MoS2/Carbon-nanocomposite with three-dimensional hierarchical architecture based on carbonized bacterial cellulose (CBC) nanofibers is synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing at 700 {\deg}C in Ar atmosphere. Strong hydrogen bonds between the Mo precursor and the BC nanofibers are found to be crucial for the in-situ growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the nanofibers during hydrothermal process. The unique structure was maintained and the connection between MoS2 and nanofibers were strengthened in the sintering process, leading to an improved stability of the resulting nanocomposite upon electrochemical cycling. The low-cost and environmentally friendly 3D web-like structure enables binder-free and carbon-free electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit high specific discharge capacities up to 1140 mAh/g at the C-rate of 1 C without significant capacity fading for over 50 cycles. The porous conductive hierarchical structure of the composite endows excellent rate performance by avoiding the aggregation of the MoS2 nanosheets and by accommodating mechanical stress which appears upon electrochemical cycling.

Abstract:MoS2 nanosheet arrays supported on hierarchical nitrogen-doped porous carbon (MoS2@C) have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal approach combined with high-temperature calcination. The hierarchical nitrogen-doped porous carbon can serve as three-dimensional conductive frameworks to improve the electronic transport of semiconducting MoS2. When evaluated as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the MoS2@C exhibit enhanced electrochemical performances compared with pure MoS2 nanosheets, including high capacity (1305.5 mA h g(-1) at 100 mAg(-1)), excellent rate capability (438.4 mA hg(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1)). The reasons for the improved electrochemical performances are explored in terms of the high electronic conductivity and the facilitation of lithium ion transport arising from the hierarchical structures of MoS2@C. Enhanced lithium storage performances of hierarchical hollow MoS₂ nanoparticles assembled from nanosheets.

Abstract:MoS(2), because of its layered structure and high theoretical capacity, has been regarded as a potential candidate for electrode materials in lithium secondary batteries. But it suffers from the poor cycling stability and low rate capability. Here, hierarchical hollow nanoparticles of MoS(2) nanosheets with an increased interlayer distance are synthesized by a simple solvothermal reaction at a low temperature. The formation of hierarchical hollow nanoparticles is based on the intermediate, K(2)NaMoO(3)F(3), as a self-sacrificed template. These hollow nanoparticles exhibit a reversible capacity of 902 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 80 cycles, much higher than the solid counterpart. At a current density of 1000 mA g(-1), the reversible capacity of the hierarchical hollow nanoparticles could be still maintained at 780 mAh g(-1). The enhanced lithium storage performances of the hierarchical hollow nanoparticles in reversible capacities, cycling stability and rate performances can be attributed to their hierarchical surface, hollow structure feature and increased layer distance of S-Mo-S. Hierarchical hollow nanoparticles as an ensemble of these features, could be applied to other electrode materials for the superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) shows high capacity but suffers from poor rate capability and rapid capacity decay, which greatly limit its practical applications in lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we successfully prepared MoS2 nanosheet hollow spheres encapsulated into carbon and titanium dioxide@graphite, denoted as TiO2@G@MoS2@C, via hydrothermal and polymerization approaches. In this hierarchical architecture, the MoS2 hollow sphere was sandwiched by graphite and an amorphous carbon shell; thus, TiO2@G@MoS2@C exhibited effectively enhanced electrical conductivity and withstood the volume changes; moreover, the aggregation and diffusion of the MoS2 nanosheets were restricted; this advanced TiO2@G@MoS2@C fully combined the advantages of a three-dimensional architecture, hollow structure, carbon coating, and a mechanically robust TiO2@graphite support, achieving improved specific capacity and long-term cycling stability. In addition, it exhibited the high reversible specific capacity of 823 mA h g(-1) at the current density of 0.1 A g(-1) after 100 cycles, retaining almost 88% of the initial reversible capacity with the high coulombic efficiency of 99%.

Abstract:Constructing 3D hierarchical architecture consisting of 2D hybrid nanosheets is very critical to achieve uppermost and stable electrochemical performance for both lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a simple synthesis of uniform 3D microspheres assembled from carbon nanosheets with the incorporated MoO 2 nanoclusters is demonstrated. The MoO 2 nanoclusters can be readily converted into the molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) nanocrystals by using high temperature treatment. Such assembling architecture is highly particular for preventing Mo‐based ultrasmall nanoparticles from coalescing or oxidizing and endowing them with rapid electron transfer. Consequently, the MoO 2 /C hybrids as LIB anode materials deliver a specific capacity of 625 mA h g −1 at 1600 mA g −1 even after 1000 cycles, which is among the best reported values for MoO 2 ‐based electrode materials. Moreover, the Mo 2 C/C hybrids also exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with small overpotential and robust durability in both acid and alkaline media. The present work highlights the importance of designing 3D structure and controlling ultrasmall Mo‐based nanoparticles for enhancing electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.
Rational Design of Strong Chemical Coupling Carbon Coated N-doped C@MoS2@C Nanotubes for High-Performance Lithium Storage

Abstract:1T-MoS2 is currently under intensive research, because it is a thermodynamically metastable metallic phase with a super electronic conductivity. However, the instability and finite specific capability of 1T-MoS2 hinder its application in batteries. Herein, 1T-MoS2 grown on hollow carbon fiber backbones and coated by a layer of carbon through N-S bond is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. N-S bond on the carbon expands the interplanar spacing of 1T-MoS2, which can accommodate more Li+ and improve electronic conductivity. Besides, the carbon coating of 1T-MoS2 grown on hollow carbon fiber backbones is a strong chemical coupling between 1T-MoS2 and the outer carbon matrix by N-S bond, providing a good stable structure on cycling. As a anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the obtained C@MoS2@C nanotubes showed a super capacity (737 mAh g(-1)) at high current density (2 A g(-1)) with long-life cycling (1200 cycles). Abstract:Hierarchical hybridized nanocomposites with rationally constructed compositions and structures have been considered key for achieving superior Li-ion battery performance owing to their enhanced properties, such as fast lithium ion diffusion, good collection and transport of electrons, and a buffer zone for relieving the large volume variations during cycling processes. Hierarchical MoS2 @carbon microspheres (HMCM) have been synthesized in a facile hydrothermal treatment. The structure analyses reveal that ultrathin MoS2 nanoflakes (ca. 2-5 nm) are vertically supported on the surface of carbon nanospheres. The reversible capacity of the HMCM nanocomposite is maintained at 650 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at 1 A g(-1) . Furthermore, the capacity can reach 477 mA h g(-1) even at a high current density of 4 A g(-1) . The outstanding electrochemical performance of HMCM is attributed to the synergetic effect between the carbon spheres and the ultrathin MoS2 nanoflakes. Additionally, the carbon matrix can supply conductive networks and prevent the aggregation of layered MoS2 during the charge/discharge process; and ultrathin MoS2 nanoflakes with enlarged surface areas, which can guarantee the flow of the electrolyte, provide more active sites and reduce the diffusion energy barrier of Li(+) ions.

Abstract:Ion crystal ammonium tetrathiomolybdateas (NH4)2MoS4 with the octahedral structure and high hardness could efficiently transfer and magnify the impacting and shearing force generated from ball-milling process to the surface of expandable graphite (EG) to accelerate its exfoliation and fragmentation. The obtained massive precursor comprised of nano-(NH4)2MoS4 and carbon nanosheets with few layers could transfer into MoS2/C sandwiched nanocomposites after subsequent calcination, which owns satisfied Li-storage performance even at relatively high current density.

Abstract:A top-down method was developed to synthesize hierarchical composites consisting of NiCo2O4 nanocubes and graphene nanosheets through the electrostatic interaction of negatively charged graphene oxide nanosheets and positively charged NiCo2O4 spheres. Employed as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the hierarchical composites exhibit remarkably high electrochemical performance, including large reversible capacity, superior rate capability, and excellent cycling performance. Large reversible capacities of 1024 and 648 mA h g-1 are maintained at a current density of 500 and 3000 mA g-1, respectively, for over 200 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the composite is attributed to the synergistic effect of the hierarchical structure, the well dispersed NiCo2O4 nanocubes and the uniform graphene coating. This work provides an effective and promising strategy for the rational structural design of the metal oxide electrode material.
Few-layer MoS2 Nanosheets Incorporated into Hierarchical Porous Carbon for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In order to overcome the serious stacking and poor conductivity of graphene-like MoS2 nanosheets, we have developed the synthesis of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets incorporated into biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon frameworks (labeled as MoS2/C hybrids) utilizing the strong water-absorbing power of auricularia from its inherent rich porous structure. The as-obtained MoS2/C hybrids, when applied as lithium-ion batteries anode materials, show an improved specific capacity of 707.4mAhg−1 compared with the commercial MoS2 nanosheets (580.2mAhg−1) and the corresponding hierarchical porous carbon (215.5mAhg−1). More meaningfully, they possess an impressive cycle life, almost without capacity fading even after 500 cycles at 1600mAg−1. The intriguing performance is mainly attributed to the well-dispersion of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets into hierarchical porous carbon. We believe this work will provide a new insight on the design and synthesis of novel carbon-based electrode materials for potential applications in lithium-ion batteries and other clean energy devices.
One-pot synthesis of hierarchical Co1–S/NC@MoS2/C hollow nanofibers based on one-dimensional metal coordination polymers for enhanced lithium and sodium-ion storage

Abstract:Multicomponent metal sulfides have been recognized as promising anode materials for lithium/sodium-ion storage given their enticing theoretical capacities. However, the simplification of synthetic processes and the construction of heterogeneous interfaces of multimetal sulfides remain great challenges. Herein, a hierarchical 1T-MoS2/carbon nanosheet decorated Co1-xS/N-doped carbon (Co1-xS/NC@MoS2/C) hollow nanofiber was designed and constructed via a one-pot hydrothermal method using a cobalt-based coordination polymer nanofiber. This nanofiber can transform in-situ into conductive N-doped carbon hollow fibers embedded with active Co1-xS nanoparticles, enabling the epitaxial growth of MoS2 nanosheets. Consequently, the Co1-xS/NC@MoS2/C composites achieve exceptional lithium/sodium-ion storage performance. Compared to MoS2/C microspheres and Co1-xS/NC hollow nanofibers alone, the Co1-xS/NC@MoS2/C hollow nanofibers deliver higher discharge capacities (1085.9 mAh g-1 for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and 748.5 mAh g-1 for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) at 100 mA g-1), better capacity retention (910 mAh g-1 for LIBs and 636.5 mAh g-1 for SIBs after 150 cycles at 100 mA g-1), and increased cycling stability (407.2 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles for SIBs at 1000 mA g-1). Furthermore, the kinetic analysis shows that the lithium/sodium-ion storage processes of the Co1-xS/NC@MoS2/C electrode are mainly controlled by pseudocapacitance behavior. The excellent electrochemical properties can thus be ascribed to the synergy of the MoS2/C nanosheets with the enlarged interlayer spacing, good conductivity of the carbon layers, and the Co1-xS nanoparticles embedded in the hollow nanofibers with extensive reaction sites.

Abstract:In this work, a core-shell composite composed of MoS2 nanosheets grown on hollow carbon microspheres is synthesized by a hydrothermal and a subsequent annealing route. The result shows that well-graphitized hollow-carbon@highlycrystallineMoS2(HC@MoS2) was obtained after the four-step reaction. And it is found that the synthesized MoS2 is consist of 2H and 1T phases. The lithium storage property of the composite is investigated as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Benefited from the special morphology and structure, a stable capacity of 970mAhg−1 for over 100 cycles at a current density of 0.25Ag−1 is realized on the material. Even at a high current density of 4Ag−1, a reversible capacity as high as 560mAhg−1 is delivered. Moreover, the reasons for the excellent electrochemical performance of the material are explored and discussed in detail.

Abstract:Constructing hybrid heterostructures of transition-metal dichalcogenides is an effective strategy to enhance their electrochemical performance and stability as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a facile in situ strategy was developed to engineer lattice-mismatched MoS2–ZnS together with C into hierarchical nanostructures. The three-dimensional architecture was constructed using few-layer MoS2 nanosheets as the building block, and ZnS and C coexisted among the MoS2 nanosheets with a mesoporous structure. By the synergy effect of integrated interfaces and hierarchical configuration, as-formed heterostructures exhibit increased conductivity, enhanced e–/Li+ transfer efficiency, and retarded volume expansion during the electrochemical process. All of these contribute to the greatly increased lithium storage capability and well-preserved stability. Impressively, as-obtained materials exhibit a high lithium storage capacity of 961.9 mA g–1 at 100 mA g–1 after 100 cycles (about 3.1 times higher than pristine MoS2 after 35 cycles), good rate retention, and superior cycling stability with 9.5% decay. Template-Free Synthesis of Hierarchical Composite Nanotubes with Superior Lithium and Sodium Storage Performance

Abstract:2D transition metal disulfides are one of the most preferred materials for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, complex processes and structural instability during cycling are challenges faced. Herein, the hierarchical composite nanotubes CeO2@C@MoS2 (MS/CNTs) are prepared by electrostatic spinning, followed by a simple carbon coating method. The as-prepared composite nanotubes with self-assembled layer structures are characterized by a more stable structure compared with traditional nanofibers due to the existence of a dense skeleton. As a result of the stable framework structure, MS/CNTs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in LIBs (1002 mA hg(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and 690 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 500 cycles) and super-long cyclic stability and electrochemical performance (550 mA hg(-1) at 2 A g(-1) after 2400 cycles). MS/CNTs also show excellent storage performance in sodium batteries (440 mA hg(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 400 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1)). The stability of MoS2 nanotubes is effectively improved by chemical and physical methods, mainly due to the support of the CeO2@C, metal-organic framework (MOF) tube skeleton, which avoids the shedding of nanotubes after cycling, maintaining a unique structural topography even after 500 cycles.
Structural engineering of CoMoO3 nanosheets on cage-like carbon nanoflakes toward enhanced lithium storage performance

Abstract:Bimetal oxides possess high electronic conductivity and multiple electrochemically active sites owing to their stepwise electrochemical reactions compared with the single metal oxides. However, bimetal oxides still suffer from the severe volume changes upon lithium insertion/delithiation processes, thus leading to poor cycle stability. Herein, we demonstrate the growth of novel CoMoO3 nanosheets on the cage-like carbon nanoflakes (c-CNFs) through a facile in-situ thermal decomposition strategy. The phase and morphology structures of CoMoO3 can be readily controlled by adjusting the sintering temperature under the argon atmosphere, changing from 0D CoMoO4 nanoparticles@c-CNFs (350 °C, denoted as CoMoO4 @C) to 0D CoMoO4 nanoparticles and 2D CoMoO3 nanosheets co-existed nanohybrids@c-CNFs (450 °C, denoted as CoMoOx @C) and 2D CoMoO3 nanosheets@c-CNFs (550 °C, denoted as CoMoO3 @C). When examined as anode materials for LIBs, the CoMoO3 @C electrode exhibited excellent lithium storage performance. The superior performance of the CoMoO3 @C electrode could be attributed to the novel CoMoO3 nanosheet structure combined with the reduced volume change from well-fitted CoMoO3 @c-CNFs, which delivered a reversible capacity of ~706 mA h/g for 360 cycles at 500 mA/g, higher than that of the CoMoO4 @C and CoMoOx @C electrodes.
