Abstract:Encoding is an indispensable procedure in general phase measurement, and it is usually performed with a deterministic unitary transformation between the initial probe state and the final state. In order to improve the measurement precision, many studies focus on the optimization of the initial probe state. In this paper, we propose a scheme of subtracting one photon from the output state of an SU(1,1) interferometer. In addition to improving the output state, we find that this scheme can be used to optimize the encoding procedure. The performance of this type of optimization is only strong when the phase-sensitive negativity is induced in the Wigner function of the equivalent probe state. If a nearly perfect single-photon detector is used for the singlephoton subtraction operation, the phase sensitivity within a narrow phase range can surpass 1/(./nu N), where N is the mean number of photons inside the SU(1,1) interferometer, and nu is the number of copies of the Gaussian probe state.

Abstract:The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on the Sagnac effect is a high-accuracy rotation sensor. The intermodulation error due to the laser noise at even harmonics of the modulation frequency deteriorates the performance of the RFOG. Aiming at the suppression of high-frequency laser noise, a phase-modulated feedback loop is developed and analyzed. The parameters of the servo loop is optimized to enhance the performance of the gyroscope.

Abstract:In the realm of acoustic signal detection, the identification of weak signals, particularly in the presence of negative signal-to-noise ratios, poses a significant challenge. This challenge is further heightened when signals are acquired through fiber-optic hydrophones, as these signals often lack physical significance and resist clear systematic modeling. Conventional processing methods, e.g., low-pass filter (LPF), require a thorough understanding of the effective signal bandwidth for noise reduction, and may introduce undesirable time lags. This paper introduces an innovative feedback control method with dual Kalman filters for the demodulation of phase signals with noises in fiber-optic hydrophones. A mathematical model of the closed-loop system is established to guide the design of the feedback control, aiming to achieve a balance with the input phase signal. The dual Kalman filters are instrumental in mitigating the effects of signal noise, observation noise, and control execution noise, thereby enabling precise estimation for the input phase signals. The effectiveness of this feedback control method is demonstrated through examples, showcasing the restoration of low-noise signals, negative signal-to-noise ratio signals, and multi-frequency signals. This research contributes to the technical advancement of high-performance devices, including fiber-optic hydrophones and phase-locked amplifiers.

Abstract:We demonstrate the enhancement of nonlinear response and bistable switching in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer with side coupled nonlinear defects. Such system is known to exhibit high-Q nonlinear Fano resonances. Based on the introduced figure of merit the enhancement up to two orders of magnitude can be achieved compared to standard geometries. We applied these results for photonic crystal platform which allow for enhanced optical bistable operation.

Abstract:A nonlinear phase shift is introduced to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), and we present a scheme for enhancing the phase sensitivity. In our scheme, one input port of a standard MZI is injected with a coherent state and the other input port is injected with one mode of a two-mode squeezed-vacuum state. The final interference output of the MZI is detected with the method of active correlation output readout. Based on the optimal splitting ratio of beam splitters, the phase sensitivity can beat the standard quantum limit and approach the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. The effects of photon loss on phase sensitivity are discussed. Our scheme can also provide some estimates for units of chi((3)), due to the relation between the nonlinear phase shift and the susceptibility chi((3)) of the Kerr medium.
The Effect of Optical Phase Conjugation on Inter- and Intra-Channel Nonlinearities in Ultrahigh-Speed Transmission Systems

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.
Enhancement of Nonlinear Phase Shift for Format Conversion in Silicon Waveguides

Abstract:Different modulation formats may be required in different optical communication networks. Format conversion from intensity format to phase format is necessary to ensure the functions between long-haul transmission networks and metropolitan area networks. Cross-phase modulation (XPM) in silicon waveguides provides a promising way to realize all-optical integrated format conversion since a nonlinear phase shift is induced to the probe by the incident signal power. An on-off keying (OOK) signal can be converted to differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal if nonlinear phase shift of π is achieved. We numerically investigate the nonlinear phase shift caused by XPM in silicon waveguides by considering the influences of the walk-off effect, group-velocity dispersion, and nonlinear losses including two-photon absorption (TPA) and free-carrier absorption (FCA). The nonlinear phase shift is tried to be enhanced through waveguide design and wavelength management. The walk-off effect can be minimized by carefully choosing the zero dispersion wavelength of the used silicon waveguide and setting the signal and probe wavelengths symmetrically. Low and flat dispersion is beneficial to acquiring a large nonlinear phase shift. TPA and FCA will greatly reduce the nonlinear phase shift obtained from XPM and they should be effectively suppressed in order to realize high-quality format conversion.

Abstract:We treat the nonlinear phase shift response in the weak perturbation limit as a linear digital filter that can be synthesized into the values of its poles and zeros and mapped onto an optical architecture. This procedure results in a significant enhancement in the nonlinear sensitivity with a response that is robust to frequency changes within the filter passband. A precompensation technique can be used to reduce distortions under strongly driven nonlinear operation to achieve a larger phase shift. We also show that nonlinear sensitivity improves with increasing filter group delay and can be increased within constant linear bandwidth by use of higher-order filters. Abstract:In the control of classical mechanical systems, the feedback has beensuccessfully applied to the production of the desired nonlinear dynamics.However, how much this can be done is still an open problem in quantummechanical systems. This paper proposes a scheme of generating strong nonlinearquantum effects via the recently developed coherent feedback techniques, whichcan be shown to outperform the measurement-based quantum feedback scheme thatcan only generate pseudo-nonlinear quantum effects. Such advancement isdemonstrated by two application examples in quantum optics on chip. In thefirst example, we show that the nonlinear Kerr effect can be generated andamplified to be comparable with the linear effect in a transmission lineresonator (TLR). In the second example, we show that by tuning the gains of thequantum amplifiers in a TLR coherent feedback network, non-Gaussian "light"(microwave field) can be generated and manipulated via the nonlinear effectswhich exhibits fully quantum sub-Poisson photoncount statistics and photonantibunching phenomenon. The scheme opens promising applications indemonstrating strong nonlinear quantum optics on chip, which is extremely weakand inflexible in traditional quantum optical devices.

Abstract:We analyse a nonlinear interferometer, also known as an SU(1,1) interferometer, in the presence of internal losses and inefficient detectors. To overcome these limitations, we consider the effect of seeding one of the interferometer input modes with either a number state or a coherent state. We derive analytical expressions for the interference visibility, contrast, phase sensitivity, and signal-to-noise ratio, and show a significant enhancement in all these quantities as a function of the seeding photon number. For example, we predict that, even in the presence of substantial losses and highly inefficient detectors, we can achieve the same quantum-limited phase sensitivity of an unseeded nonlinear interferometer by seeding with a few tens of photons. Furthermore, we observe no difference between a number or a coherent seeding state when the interferometer operates in the low-gain regime, which enables seeding with an attenuated laser. Our results expand the nonlinear interferometry capabilities in the field of quantum imaging, metrology, and spectroscopy under realistic experimental conditions.

Abstract:Quantum estimation of electrical charge is investigated by using nonlinear optomechanical interaction. Due to the light-matter decoupling at one mechanical period, we need to consider only the cavity state, meaning that no direct access to the oscillator state is required. It is shown that the charge sensitivity can be greatly improved by enhancing optomechanical coupling. Further, we find that our theoretical result can surpass the sensitivity obtained from electrical measurements.

Abstract:To enhance the phase sensitivity of Mach–Zehnder interferometers, we use a tunable phase shift before the light beams are injected into the interferometer. The analytical result of the optimal phase shift is obtained, which only depends on the initial input states. For a non-zero optimal phase shift, the phase sensitivity of the interferometers in the output ports is always enhanced. We can achieve this enhancement for most states, including entangled and mixed states. The optimal phase shift is exhibited in three examples. Compared to previous methods, this scheme provides a general way to improve phase sensitivity and could find wide applications in optical phase estimations.

Abstract:The enhancement of the intracavity entanglement of a nonlinear coupler via homodyne-mediated quantum feedback is investigated. It is found that the feedback can effectively enhance the squeezing, entanglement and purity of a two-mode field in the nonlinear coupler by appropriately choosing the quadrature angle at which the quantum feedback is introduced.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the interaction of loop and nonlinear Fano resonances results in a formation of hybrid resonant states in Mach-Zehnder type interferometers, providing with opportunities for an advanced phase manipulation. The nonlinear response of such structures can be greatly enhanced, leading to a low threshold 100% switching operation. We further propose one of the possible realizations based on nonlinear photonic crystal circuits, suitable for optimal all-optical switching.

Abstract:Quantum coherent feedback has been proven to be an efficient way to tune the dynamics of quantum optical systems and, recently, those of solid-state quantum circuits. Here, inspired by the recent progress of quantum feedback experiments, especially those in mesoscopic circuits, we prove that superconducting circuit QED systems, shunted with a coherent feedback loop, can change the dynamics of a superconducting transmission line resonator, i.e., a linear quantum cavity, and lead to strong on-chip nonlinear optical phenomena. We find that bistability can occur under the semiclassical approximation and photon antibunching can be shown in the quantum regime. Our study presents alternate perspectives for engineering nonlinear quantum dynamics on a chip.

Abstract:The nonlinearity is an important feature in the field of optomechanics. Employing atomic coherence, we put forward a scheme to enhance the nonlinearity of the cavity optomechanical system. The effective Hamiltonian is derived, which shows that the nonlinear strength can be enhanced by increasing the number of atoms at a certain range of parameters. We also numerically study the nonlinearity enhancement beyond the effective Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we investigate the potential usage of the nonlinearity in performing a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of the bosonic modes. Our results show that the present system exhibits synchronization, and the nonlinear effects provide us an effective method in performing QND.

Abstract:Interferometers are widely used as sensors in precision measurement. Compared with a conventional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the sensitivity of a correlation-enhanced nonlinear interferometer can break the standard quantum limit. Phase sensitivity plays a significant role in the enhanced performance. In this paper, we review improvement in phase estimation technologies in correlation-enhanced nonlinear interferometers, including SU(1,1) interferometer and SU(1,1)-SU(2) hybrid interferometer, and so on, and the applications in quantum metrology and quantum sensing networks.

Abstract:We investigate the enhancement of the intracavity entanglement of a self-phase-locked type-II nondegenerate optical parameter oscillator (SPL NOPO) via homodyne-mediated quantum feedback. It is found that the feedback can effectively enhance the squeezing, entanglement, and purity of the two-mode field in the SPL NOPO. Especially for an ordinary NOPO, our feedback scheme can simulate a standard two-mode squeezed vacuum environment and a pure steady two-mode squeezed vacuum cavity field can be generated, different from the scheme proposed by Mancini [Phys.
