Abstract:Phase matching is crucial for effective nonlinear frequency conversion. Recent advances in photonic miniaturization greatly promote implementations of efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in integrated photonic devices. Here, we investigate second-harmonic generation in coupled nonlinear waveguides. We develop a nonlinear optical coupled-mode theory and implement the concept of supermode to analyze the phase-matching condition, which greatly facilitates deep understanding of physics therein and optimization of device design. We have successfully identified six phase-matching conditions for the first time. The dynamic nonlinear optical processes are analytically modeled, which explicitly demonstrates that the phase-matching condition can be realized by extra momentum compensating due to the interwaveguide coupling. The influences of input pump amplitude and relative phase difference are successively investigated. The theoretical model presented here should be readily generalized to other nonlinear optical processes (e.g., difference frequency generations) and will remain valid in asymmetric coupled waveguide structures or even beyond a weakly coupling regime. Our results will be useful for constructing highly efficient integrated nonlinear optical conversion devices with extended functionality.

Abstract:We treat the nonlinear phase shift response in the weak perturbation limit as a linear digital filter that can be synthesized into the values of its poles and zeros and mapped onto an optical architecture. This procedure results in a significant enhancement in the nonlinear sensitivity with a response that is robust to frequency changes within the filter passband. A precompensation technique can be used to reduce distortions under strongly driven nonlinear operation to achieve a larger phase shift. We also show that nonlinear sensitivity improves with increasing filter group delay and can be increased within constant linear bandwidth by use of higher-order filters. Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:We study cascaded microring resonator (CMRR) configurations as general nonlinear phase-shifting elements that exhibit enhanced nonlinear sensitivity and flattened transmission characteristics. We show that even when the material itself has large two-photon absorption, CMRR devices with five rings facilitate a factor-of-10 enhancement of the optical nonlinearity when compared with a channel waveguide having the same group delay. In addition, high throughput in intensity can be maintained up to a 3pi phase shift. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:The artificial resonance of optical ring resonators can be used to enhance the nonlinear phase shift resulting from a third-order material response. This enhancement results from the interaction of two effects: the internal intensity build up within the resonator which introduces a single pass nonlinear phase shift, and the resulting detuning of the resonance which causes a change in phase at the outputs. Devices consisting of multiple resonators in series can provide additional improvements in terms of allowing a large phase shift of the output. As compared to same material in bulk, devices consisting of single and multiple ring resonators constructed from an absorbing material can provide a much greater nonlinear phase shift, in some case by many orders of magnitude. In addition, these phase shifts exceed the maximum value allowed by absorption in bulk materials.

Abstract:We propose the use of triply resonant silicon photonic structures, based on a set of three coupled silicon nanobeam cavities, to engineer third-order nonlinearities. We show that a judicious selection of the opto-geometrical parameters allows a nearly independent tuning of the linear and nonlinear properties of the system. We demonstrate that longitudinally shifting the central cavity weakly affects the system nonlinear properties while strongly changing its resonance wavelengths. In contrast, longitudinally shifting one of the side cavities leads to a significant variation of the self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and four-wave mixing nonlinear overlaps, while the linear properties of the three-cavity photonic molecule are then only moderately tuned. This geometrical control of the nonlinear properties of photonic molecules opens new degrees of freedom for the realization of small footprint and efficient optical switching and frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:The ease of integration coupled with large second-order nonlinear coefficient of atomically thin layered 2D materials presents a unique opportunity to realize second-order nonlinearity in silicon compatible integrated photonic system. However, the phase matching requirement for second-order nonlinear optical processes makes the nanophotonic design difficult. We show that by nano-patterning the 2D material, quasi-phase matching can be achieved. Such patterning based phase-matching could potentially compensate for inevitable fabrication errors and significantly simplify the design process of the nonlinear nano-photonic devices.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) in an on-chip lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. We overcome the difficulty of double resonance for the phase matched pump and second harmonic waves by selectively exciting high order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Our technique opens opportunities for integrated classical and quantum photonic applications.

Abstract:Multiply resonant silicon photonic devices based on three coupled nanobeam cavities are proposed engineer third order nonlinearities at wavelengths around lambda = 1.55 mu m. We show that varying the geometrical parameters allows a flexible tuning of linear properties of the system, especially the deviations between the cavity resonance wavelengths. Based on the linear regime results, the nonlinear properties of the system are studied using coupled mode expressions of the super-modes given by the Tight-Binding method for the calculation of the nonlinear integrals controlling the intensity of the third-order nonlinear effects of the photonic molecules. We geometrically control the self-phase modulation (SPM), the cross-phase modulation (XPM), and the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) nonlinear coefficients of the three coupled nanobeam cavities and identify general trends for nonlinear applications such as optical switching and frequency conversion devices.
Naturally Phase Matched Lithium Niobate Nanocircuits for Integrated Nonlinear Photonics

Abstract:High complexity, dense integrated nanophotonic circuits possessing strong nonlinearities are desirable for a breadth of applications in classical and quantum optics. In this work, we study natural phase matching via modal engineering in lithium niobate (LN) waveguides and microring resonators on chip for second harmonic generation (SHG). By carefully engineering the geometry dispersion, we observe a $26\%~W^{-1}cm^{-2}$ normalized efficiency for SHG in a waveguide with submicron transverse mode confinement. With similar cross-sectional dimensions, we demonstrate phase matched SHG in a microring resonator with 10 times enhancement on the out-coupled second-harmonic power. Our platform is capable of harnessing the strongest optical nonlinear and electro-optic effects in LN on chip with unrestricted planar circuit layouts. It offers opportunities for dense and scalable integration of efficient photonic devices with low loss and high nonlinearity.

Abstract:Simultaneous manipulation of multiple degrees of freedom of light lies at the heart of photonics. Nonlinear wavefront shaping offers an exceptional way to achieve this goal by converting incident light into beams of new frequencies with spatially varied phase, amplitude, and angular momenta. Nevertheless, the reconfigurable control over structured light fields for advanced multimode nonlinear photonics remains a grand challenge. Here, we propose the concept of nonlinear geometric phase in an emerging ferroelectric nematic fluid, of which the second-order nonlinear susceptibility carries spin-dependent nonlinearity phase. A case study with photopatterned q-plates demonstrates the generation of second-harmonic optical vortices with spin-locked topological charges by using cascaded linear and nonlinear optical spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore, we present the dynamic tunability of second-harmonic structured light through temperature, electric field, and twisted elastic force. The proposed strategy opens new avenues for reconfigurable nonlinear photonics, with potential applications in optical communications, quantum computing, high-resolution imaging, etc.

Abstract:Cascaded nonlinear phase shifts via second-harmonic generation are theoretically studied for quasi-phase-matched (QPM) structures. Both the effective phase mismatch and the structure itself contribute to the resultant nonlinear phase shift. Depending on the sign of the effective phase mismatch, structural contribution may enhance or depress the nonlinear phase shift. The fundamental wave will experience a nonlinear phase shift even if the effective phase matching is satisfied. By properly designing the effective phase mismatch, QPM structures with large material-based phase mismatch may provide large nonlinear phase shifts before saturation.

Abstract:The capability of locally engineering the nonlinear optical properties of media is crucial in nonlinear optics. Although poling is the most widely employed technique for achieving locally controlled nonlinearity, it leads only to a binary nonlinear state, which is equivalent to a discrete phase change of π in the nonlinear polarizability. Here, inspired by the concept of spin-rotation coupling, we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear metasurfaces with homogeneous linear optical properties but spatially varying effective nonlinear polarizability with continuously controllable phase. The continuous phase control over the local nonlinearity is demonstrated for second and third harmonic generation by using nonlinear metasurfaces consisting of nanoantennas of C3 and C4 rotational symmetries, respectively. The continuous phase engineering of the effective nonlinear polarizability enables complete control over the propagation of harmonic generation signals. Therefore, this method seamlessly combines the generation and manipulation of harmonic waves, paving the way for highly compact nonlinear nanophotonic devices.
Engineering the Nonlinear Phase Shift with Multistage Autoregressive Moving-Average Optical Filters

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate the application of concepts from digital filter design in order to optimize artificial optical resonant structures to produce a nearly ideal nonlinear phase shift response. Multistage autoregressive moving average (ARMA) optical filters (ring-resonator-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer lattices) are designed and studied. The filter group delay is used as a measure instead of finesse or quality factor to study the nonlinear sensitivity for multiple resonances. The nonlinearity of a four-stage ARMA filter is 17 times higher than that of the intrinsic material of the same group delay. We demonstrate that the nonlinear sensitivity can be increased within constant bandwidth by allocating more in-band phase or by using higher-order filter structures and that the nonlinear sensitivity enhancement improves with increasing group delay. We also investigate methods to precompensate the nonlinear response to reduce the occurrence of optical bistabilities. The effect of optical loss, including linear absorption and two-photon absorption, is discussed in postanalysis. In addition, we discuss how the improvement in nonlinear response scales with respect to various filter parameters.
Ultrafast and octave-spanning optical nonlinearities from strongly phase-mismatched cascaded interactions

Abstract:Cascaded nonlinearities have attracted much interest, but ultrafast applications have been seriously hampered by the simultaneous requirements of being near phase-matching and having ultrafast femtosecond response times. Here we show that in strongly phase-mismatched nonlinear frequency conversion crystals the pump pulse can experience a large and extremely broadband self-defocusing cascaded Kerr-like nonlinearity. The large cascaded nonlinearity is ensured through interaction with the largest quadratic tensor element in the crystal, and the strong phase-mismatch ensures an ultrafast nonlinear response with an octave-spanning bandwidth. We verify this experimentally by showing few-cycle soliton compression with noncritical cascaded second-harmonic generation: Energetic 47 fs infrared pulses are compressed in a just 1-mm long bulk lithium niobate crystal to 17 fs (under 4 optical cycles) with 80% efficiency, and upon further propagation an octave-spanning supercontinuum is observed. Such ultrafast cascading is expected to occur for a broad range of pump wavelengths spanning the near- and mid-IR using standard nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:The new mechanism for obtaining a nonlinear phase shift has been proposed and the schemes are described for its implementation. As it is shown, the interference of two waves with intensity-dependent amplitude ratio coming from the second harmonic generation should produce the nonlinear phase shift. The sign and amount of nonlinear distortion of a beam wavefront is dependent of the relative phase of the waves that is introduced by the phase element. Calculated value of $n_2^{eff}$ exceeds that connected with cascaded quadratic nonlinearity, at the same conditions.

Abstract:We proposed a new scheme of controlling second-harmonic generation by enhanced Kerr electro-optic nonlinearity. We designed a structure that can implement the cascaded Pockels effect and second-harmonic generation simultaneously. The energy coupling between the fundamental lights of different polarizations led to a large nonlinear phase shift and, thus, an effective electro-optic nonlinear refractive index. The effective nonlinearity can be either positive or negative, causing the second-harmonic spectra to move toward the coupling center, which, in turn, offered us a way to measure the effective electro-optic nonlinear refractive index. The corresponding enhanced Kerr electro-optic nonlinearity is more than three orders of magnitude higher than the intrinsic value.These results open a door to manipulate the nonlinear phase by applying an external electric field instead of light intensity in noncentrosymmetric crystals.
